Pacific Rim is one of the best movies I've seen in the past 10 years. Not because it deserves an award but because it was exactly what it said it was - it didn't try to be more it just delivered. And in the theater it was really really fun.

"We're cancelling the Apocalypse!"

Uttered by none other than Stringer Bell.

Pacific Rim - It promised robots fighting monsters and it delivered robots fighting monsters. ROBOTS FIGHTING MONSTERS GOD ######!!! AWESOME!!!! SERIOUSLY AWESOME!!! And Charlie Day is funny in anything he does. I sincerely hope there is a sequel.
I contend that people who didn't like Pacific Rim were in the wrong theater to begin with.
It sucked...but to be fair I saw it at home and not at the theatre
It promised giant robots fighting giant monsters and delivered that in spades. Nothing about that sucks.

By the way, welcome to page 666 of this thread.

Woe to you, Oh Earth and Sea, for the Devil sends the beast with wrath, because he knows the time is short. Let him who hath understanding reckon the number of the beast, for it is a human number, its number is Six hundred and sixty six.

I had really low expectations for Pacific Rim and it almost lived up to them.
What were you expecting when you sat down to watch a movie about GIANT ROBOTS FIGHTING GIANT MONSTERS!!!? Not only did we get GIANT ROBOTS FIGHTING GIANT MONSTERS!!! but we got great direction, fantastic cgi, a cool ### lead and a fun popcorn flick to watch with your kids. SO I ask again, What were you expecting when you sat down to watch a movie about GIANT ROBOTS FIGHTING GIANT MONSTERS!!!?

Also I gotta say I thought Vin did a better job on his telephone closing scene in BR than Leo did in his WoWS telephone closing scene. I find typing that sentence as shocking as actually believing it.
Vin is a good actor.
Find Me Guilty is a pretty awesome movie no one has heard of, and its an atypical role for Vin as well. To make you/everyone want to watch it even more, Peter Dinklage plays the lawyer.

Prisoners was pretty good, but, I don't like when movie detectives take so long to figure out clues that are obvious to the audience. I was a step ahead of Jake Gyllenhal for most of the second half of the film and it was frustrating to watch him take so long to make the next step. Kind of makes me feel he's not the great detective he should be in the story when obvious connections take so long to make.
How many clues were obvious who the killer/kidnapper was halfway thru the movie?

I don't agree that these are forgotten. I've seen most of them more than once. Still, a good list worth checking out:

10 Forgotten 90's Crime Movies
Couple of personal favorites in there.
I could watch King of New York 100 times.
Love it, and anytime I think of this movie, I picture Walken rocking out to some Schoolly D
I saw this one in the theaters in way uptown NYC. Went with my gb and his sister who was visiting from San Diego or some other lala place

Pretty quickly into the movie, I could tell the general tenor and response of the crowd was a little different than my few-years-removed from being suburban, white kid take on it. I was reacting to what I thought were obvious "good-guys" and "bad guys" scenarios, but the crowd was acting the exact opposite. I think we were the only people there without hoodies drawn tight over our faces and cheering for cops being shot. My gb rushed his sister out beore the closing credits started rolling. I joined a gang.

The robots weren't big enough? The fights weren't long enough? The monsters weren't monstery enough?

I just have difficulty understanding why someone with knowledge of the premise going to see a movie about giant robots fighting giant monsters would come away disappointed from this.

I also went into the movie Dungeons and Dragons with full knowledge of the premise. I left with blue lips.
I just fail to see how this is relevant. D&D didn't deliver what it promised to audiences (it also had incredibly crappy special effects) Pacific Rim did (and it had very tight special effects).

I appreciate that you didn't enjoy it I just don't understand why you didn't enjoy it.

Bought Pacific Rim on DVD the second I could and did movie night with my son. Girls in bed, lights off, TV volume at 50+. The mancave was a warzone of monsters and robots for 2 hours. Still an awesome movie.

Watched this weekend. Not sure how anyone could possibly be disappointed in this movie.

Thought the writing was pathetically bad- from the dialogue to the overall story. Thta pretty much diminished it for me. Pacing and tone also felt off and all over the place. Also felt like Del Toro was just in the mood to make robots, so came up with this vehicle for his monsters (which I'm tired of) and robots.

Thanks, I have no comment on the writing or dialogue because I didn't sit down to watch it for those reasons and I couldn't care less about them. To me your criticisms, particularly the bolded, supports jdogg's contention that you were probably in the wrong theater to begin with.

I thought the biggest flaw, being that it was a film about bad ### pilots controlling bad ### mechs, was there wasn't nearly the amount of homoeroticism I was expecting. Not one shirtless volleyball scene to be found. What's up with that?

I can't expect non-pathetic dialogue and decent pacing and tone in a Monsters vs Giant Robots movie? I need to really, REALLY lower my expectations I guess.

And I was hoping for... I mean expecting... the robots to do a three-way.

I don't know man I guess you can expect it but if the giant robot vs giant monster movie doesn't deliver it that should be neither a surprise nor a disappointment so long as the giant robots fighting giant monsters is ####### BAD###!!!!

Not that it matters much but it seems audiences and critics agreed (IMDB 7.1, RT 72% critics, & 78% audiences). FWIW D&D got 3.6, 10% & 19% respectively.

Elysium - I want to say that this wasn't completely terrible, and I like Blomkamp's directorial style & vision quite a bit even if this film misses on most levels. While had some solid action moments the story was just too simple and obviously told (pretty sure it was by design). All rich people = bad all the time, yeah we got it. And WTF with Jodie Foster's accent? Seriously what was that supposed to be? It was bad to the point of distraction.

While I don't want to nit-pick an average, at best, film to death...

Uhhhhh...where are the friggin' defenses for the giant space station where all the rich people are? They have to rely on a single unstable psychotic dude to be close to his GD van to grab his rocket launcher and shoot missiles TOWARDS THE PLACE WITH ALL THE RICH PEOPLE to blow up the ships full of illegal immigrants, and hopefully not miss? DOUBLE WTF?!?!?! They better hope no asteroids are headed their way.

Isn't Transformers just robots fighting robots?
Yup, and it's a fair point. And it sucked for many reasons, including the robots fighting robots, particularly in the first film, sucked.

Among the many failures of the TF films was they spent too much time trying to make people care about guys like Shia LaBouef or his ridiculous parents or the countless robots* as well as trying to be funny and sexy and everything that would appeal to all people all the time. Also in the first film the giant robots fighting giant robots was pretty much visually incomprehensible hot mess and the audience had no idea what was going on which is why Bay overcompensated in the second film by putting everything in super, super...super..........super........................................slo...........................................................................motion.

Each TF movie is 15-25 minutes longer than Pacific Rim, I contend that if you edit out 15-25 minutes of Shia brooding over whether or not Bumble Bee is still his best bud or being a total insecure, jealous DBag to his hot girlfriend or defining convoluted sinister evil plans revolving around countless McGuffins that no one cares about. And also perhaps eliminate the forced rejected Friends episode sexual puns from Shia's parents (just edit the parents out entirely) and get rid of the kinda seriously racist comic relief robots from TF2 and focused more on giant robots vs giant robots you would have much better films.

*I know it is a little unfair to complain about too many robots in a movie about giant robots fighting giant robots but there were a ton of them and at times it became seriously confusing who were the good guys and who were the bad guys or why we should care.

Watched Elysium - meh.......2 hours I will never get back. Below average flick about the future. 1.5 stars

Watched Looper finally last night.....it started promising and then came to a grinding halt. Not a bad movie by any means, but not something I will have any desire to ever watch again. 2 stars

Anyone seen Grudge Match with Deniro and Stallone? Rented it for tonight to see if there are any laughs. Thoughts?

Maybe so, maybe not, but I ####ing love Killing Zoe, King of New York, State of Grace, and Sexy Beast. A few others I also enjoy here and then.
Shallow Grave and Sexy Beast are two films I loved
Agreed. If the ones I have seen are a reflection of the quality of all the films then it's a good list of films overall.

I haven't seen State of Grace, Kiss of Death, Little Odessa, Deep Cover or Romeo Is Bleeding. But I love Killing Zoe, King of New York, Things to do in Denver, Shallow Grave and Sexy Beast so I imagine I will get to the ones I haven't seen in short order.

I think when the author calls them forgotten he is probably not referring to the people posting regularly in the Recently viewed movie thread.

Theyre all good, but Id rank them:

State of Grace

Romeo is Bleeding

Deep Cover

Kiss of Death

I always thought of KoD as more of a guilty pleasure, its the only one Im surprised to see on this top 10 list, but its decent. Deep Cover is good but its no King of New York for Fishburne. Havent seen Little Odessa (or Denver). State of Grace and Romeo is Bleeding are both must sees. Oldman owns each of them and both are in my top 5 performances from him.

I will weigh in a again. sure, I expected monsters and robots fighting. however, with del toros name attached to it, I did expect something more. the dialogue and plot were horrible, but yeah, that's not why we were watching. visually I was disappointed too. too many fights in the dark/rain/ocean and I thought it made it a mild mess to watch. also the scale seemed inconsistent too- sometimes everything was huge and impressive: girl and monster in the street, robot collapsing on the beach. sometimes I felt they looked no bigger than a couple story building.

I get why people had fun with it and I didn't love it, but I still thought it was a slightly better looking transformers movie without the racist stereotypes and body fluid humor.

The exchange between Hayden and Sellers where Hayden talks about denying his precious fluids and Sellers realizes he is dealing with an insane person is priceless.

NO FIGHTING IN THE WAR ROOM! :)
The fact that, when he became president, Reagan asked to see the War Room when there is no War Room speaks volumes about the awesomeness of Dr. Strangelove. One of the top films, ever. Seriously.
Definitely one of the greatest black comedies and nuttiest films on the machinations behind potential nuclear holocaust ever.Kubrick probably had a great sense of humor, but a lot must have come from screen writer Terry Southern and Sellers ad libs. He rarely laughed again, cinematically, in ruthlessly probing the dark corners of man's soul.

Hayden was also great in Kubrick's first mature work, The Killing. The underrated noir's fractured narrative likely influenced Tarantino movies such as Reservoir Dogs (another caper/heist movie), Pulp Fiction and Jackie Brown.

LOL at Dr. Strangelove pointing out the doomsday device had no deterrent value if it was a secret, and the Soviet ambassador saying they were saving it for an upcoming birthday party for the Soviet Premier because he liked surprises.

Financing was contingent on Sellers playing four roles. He was also scripted to play Slim Pickens part, but was reluctant due to concerns he would be spread too thin. That role was scrapped when he sprained his ankle and couldn't work in the cramped cockpit set.

Another one of the greatest black comedies was Kind Hearts and Coronets, which also involved an actor doing a tour de force multi-role performance. Dennis Price needs to bump off seven distant relatives to inherit a titled lineage. Alec Guiness played all seven relatives (including one female), receding deeper and deeper into each successive role.

The bolded is probably why you and I had different experiences while watching this movie. I came away in awe of the cgi with the complex cityscapes as the playgorund for the battles bertween giant robots and giant monsters with weather added for mood. And the final battle on the ocean floor was a remakable visual feast which reminded me of the undersea visuals from The Abyss.

I suspect there are a lot of people that haven't seen State of Grace and Deep Cover, IMO good for what they are.

Haven't seen KoD and Little Odessa, and not sure if I've even seen all of Romeo is Bleeding, it has been a while.

Now those are some criticisms that I can understand. Del Toro does increase expectations and for the most part I thought he delivered. I had a similar concern when it became apparent that the fights were always taking place at night but I had zero trouble following the action, which is where I thought del Toro did an excellent job. I didn't really note any discrepancies with monster size.

Again I don't fault the plot or dialogue, in fact I appreciated that the McGuffin was so simple. For no reason an inter-dimensional hole opens on the bottom of the Pacific and giant monsters start popping out. BAM! Accept it and move on.

The dialogue was weak and a lot of the characters were caricatures of stereotypes, whatever, that is what I expect from a film like that.

I probably could have done without the Charlie Day, Ron Perlman & Burn Gordon sequences but I am a huge fan of It's Always Sunny so perhaps that makes me more forgiving of Day's mostly superfluous role in the film.

And I want to be clear that I don't think this is great cinema but it is an awesome delivery of giant robots fighting giant monsters. It felt like a graphic novel brought to life and it scratched an itch.
