Have I mentioned that my wife and I walked down the aisle to the score from True Romance ("You're So Cool) played on a steel drum?

Tim's Vermeer

Cute little documentary. Maybe a little long in the beginning and not enough after the payoff. It's about a quirky, geeky inventor who is intrigued by the artist Vermeer and believes he's figured out the secret to how Vermeer was able to paint so well. So, with no formal training in art, or painting, at all, Tim goes off to Amsterdam, measures Vermeer's room from The Music Lesson and recreates the dimensions, walls, props, etc. in a warehouse in Texas so he can try to duplicate a Renaissance master with the first painting Tim's ever tried to paint.

Like I said, wanted more of the payoff so time to check the DVD extras.

All is Lost. Thought it was really well done. Couple scenes I was on the edge of my seat. Redford's Cal 39 was beautiful.

Finally got around to seeing Jack Reacher. Wasn't bad but there was at least one scene that should have been cut. When the detective asks the motel clerk if she has anyone who could kill someone with one punch she sends him to Tom Cruise's room? All 5'9" inches of him. Should have let that go. Otherwise alright if somewhat predictable action movie. Definitely worth free via Amazon prime.

"lego movie" through amazon the other day. a friend with kids recommended it to me but it's not for my little dude (4+ years old). it's not especially loud or violent but the storytelling is too much for him. it just breezes by him really. he kind of catches things like "Phineas & Ferb" but that's about as sophisticated as he gets. the "Lego Movie" is funny and entertaining as hell for adults but i can't recommend it for little kids.

you mean, "stupid" little kids. my guy laughed at everything. but he's an idiot.

Saw Jack Reacher. So I guess it's not a sci-fi movie like I was expecting :bag: . Pretty stupid overall in spite of the cliched story arc of - wait, who REALLY did this. Love the murderous cabal of evil entrepreneurs. Basically terrible... but somehow, I still kinda sorta enjoyed it.

Also saw Trance? Think it was Danny Boyle? A hot mess. Except there's some famous US actress going full monty, so I guess that was good.

Yeah, that was Rosairo Dawson in all her glory and I agree it was "meh". I was expecting better especially with the cast and Boyle directing.

Sound City

This is Dave Grohl's documentary about the famous Sound City recording studios where many great albums were recorded. The first 2/3 of the doc is absolutely fantastic. This is where Fleetwood Mac got together, and where Nevermind was recorded. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sound_City_Studios

Grohl truly appreciates the impact it had on his career and he actually bought the unique Neve console that was the centerpiece of the studio. It's a look back on the recording industry of the 70s-90s and analog vs. digital. If you have any interest in that history or sound recording it's definitely worth a watch.

The last part of the movie is Grohl recording some new songs through the console at his studio with some legendary artists. It's interesting but it drags a bit. You sit through proably 30mins of supergroup type jamming. I've got manlove for Grohl though. Great musician and a pretty good director as well.

4 / 5 stars for me

The part about Sound City is great. The part where Groehl jerks himself off while talking about what music is and jams with washed up musicians, sucks balls.

Finally picked up D'Jango Unchained on blue ray.

LOVED IT!!!!!!

This along with Inglorious Bastards, Reservoir Dogs, & Kill Bill Vol 1 is Tarantinos best stuff.

Dr. Drew on his podcast with Carolla was saying this one of the best docs he's seen. Definitely want to check out.

The Normal Heart.

HBO flick. Was well done but pales in comparison to And The Band Played On, which is also on HBOGO. Not even close.

6/10

X-Men: Days of Futures Past.

Seemed like filler. X2 and First Class are very enjoyable, this not so much. The robots were boring and not enough cool displays of X-Men powers. Nearly fell asleep. Everyone seems to like it though.

5/10.

I enjoyed it. But the Captain America sequel was a lot better.

A Million Ways to Die in the West

Made me laugh out loud several times, which to me is the only relevant factor in a comedy. Thumbs up.

I thought they were both very good and had such different themes that it makes them difficult to compare. "Gun to my head" I probably lean towards the X-Men.

I'm really glad to hear you say that. Looking forward to it but buncha people being hugely critical in the dedicated thread.

I think that good dramas outnumber good comedies by about 5 to 1. So it's not that West is a classic.

But so many comedies stink, I have to recommend it.

It looks god-awful to me. But I don't find McFarlane that funny (outside of roasts).
I'm not a fan of Family Guy.

Apologies if this was already posted, but it's a nice guide to what's available:

The 101 Best Movies Streaming on Netflix 2014
I've seen 70 movies from this list, and I must say this is an excellent collection.
i checked in around the mid-60's. i think i might have missed a number of the docs they listed. i just don't have the time to watch like i used to between my duties as dad and as boyfriend.
I've seen all but 19 or 20.

Lots of good stuff in there- and lots off the beaten path- along with some dogs (cough, cough, English Patient)

Open Water 7/10 Some good intense moments in it. Based on a true story, which is incredible.

Pretty good little indie flick. Blanchard Ryan is smokin' hot.

Edge of Tomorrow

You'll walk out thinking that was pretty badass. It doesn't have a lot of heart but it also doesn't drag. Tight action movie. They could have gone for more but great as is. Worth going to the movies for. Think E. Blunt is about perfect but in this flick she didn't have me drooling. Her "dip" scene was eventually almost comical not incredibly hot like Catherine Zeta-Jones in Entrapment. You'll understand when you watch.

7/10

1. Edge of Tomorrow

2. Captain America

3. X-Men

Hmmm... I've been looking at thsi one, knowing full well the ceiling for it is pretty low- but dammit, something about it seems to be fitting some kind of missing need in me right now. But with 2 young kids (putting going out at about $100 before we've actually GONE OUT, let alone payed for movies and whatevr else) and a wife who won't want to to see it, I'd have to grab it at lunch or something. STill really tempted.

Europa Report - Found footage space film. Pretty decent I guess.

But ultimately

We spend billions (trillions) and risk the lives of humans to go to Europa and find a bacteria and a killer octopus.
that's what it boils down to. In reality that doesn't seem worth the cost.

I really enjoyed it, gave it a 8.5/10. My big problem was with the ending

I wish they would have let both of them die. But the bigger problem is how can the Alpha be dead if Cage had reset the day for 2 days prior. Really set up a paradox

Your spoiler is spot on. I laughed so hard at that scene in the movie. Can't take it seriously at all now.

I can't remember one thing about that movie. Not a good sign.
