Some of the early Seagal movies aren't terrible...reminds me of my simple college years...a one minute beating using appliance in sight is hilarious...like Hard to Kill:

'Im gonna take you to the bank, Senator Trent...to the blood bank'...boom...boom...boom, boom, boom.

Imitation Game - Very good 8/10:

They gave no indication Turing was gay so that revelation was kinda out of the blue. But maybe the Russian spy had the intel on him.
Sorry for the spoiler!! :(

Chef - Fun movie 7.5/10: I think the editing could have been better, a few scenes (the Russell Peters part, for example, was too long) should have been trimmed down. But I enjoyed all the cameos and food porn.

Chef 3/5

Cute, did a nice job mixing good food with the story, and had a lot of stars in it. But I was a little underwhelmed. Plus whenever some whiny, depressed fat guy lands more than one incredibly hot women and remains depressed, as a viewer I am unimpressed.

Olive Kitteridge

(mini series on HBO)

I really enjoyed this series. It was as depressing as hell, but I liked it.

I almost gave up on it going into the last of four episodes but glad I didn't if for no other reason than the quote: "I'm waiting for the dog to die so I can shoot myself".

I don't know why, but her delivery of that line was so perfectly off the cuff and realistically stated.

Rewatched the entire John Adams HBO series. Simply phenominal in every way. If all television was at that level we'd be a happier country.

next in my queue after I catch up on GoT
You won't be disappointed. At all. Even the minor characters should have won awards.
Would love to see HBO installments on Jefferson, Lincoln and so many other presidents. I assume the cost/ratings for Adams didn't measure up or we would have already seen this. A shame.

Perhaps they needed a bit more star power then Giamatti for a perceived dry subject. He was terrific though.

Maze runner didn't do it for me.
It was good at the theater, big screen probably made a big difference.
Wife, 14 year old son, and I watched this last night on PPV. We all liked it, good movie. 7/10 sounds about right to me too. Then again, I tend to enjoy Sci FI ish movies regardless of faults.
I enjoyed it, but it gets negative points from me for the ending. I don't like when movies are obviously setting up a sequel and have no closing merits of its own.

The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby:

A pretty good drama. I would say that it reminded me a bit of movies on the lines of Blue Valentine or Rabbit Hole. It is interesting in that there are 3 'versions' of the movie out there. The director shot Him and Her to be watched independently (from what I gather online, that is the suggested order to watch them). I watched Them, which is an edited combination of the other two movies. I watched 1/2 of Him after that, and wish I would have gone that route. 6/10

Starred Up:

Fantastic prison/drama movie. Written by a guy that was involved in the system and working with inmates. One of the better movies that I saw last year. If I remember correctly, the main kid in it is the start of Unbroken too. Highly recommended. 8/10

Loved this as well but I had to turn on the subtitles because the British/Irish accents were so thick and they used a lot of slang that was hard to catch.

i had to do the same

Ummm sorry for the spoiler. I guess I felt The Imitation Game was more of a biopic drama than a suspense thriller. OOOPTH!

Whiplash 8/10: Very intense, albeit in it's own tiny confined corner of the music world. JK Simmons is awesome.

Equalizer.

Denzel Washington and Anton Fuqua reunited (Training Day). Good action movie, suspenseful. Washington doesn't say too much, but is a killing machine. Recommended.

St. Vincent 7.5/10: A good and funny film and I liked the kid very much. I kinda wish it doesn't get so serious in certain parts. I might have kinda sorta shed a tiny tear at the end.

That name does the same thing to me that the name Robert Rodriguez does - makes me want to run the other way from the movie.

Yes to all of that.

American Sniper

[Yeah, yeah. Not a rental. Don't care.]

Interesting movie to review. I really loved parts of American Sniper. But there is some really corny #### in here, as well. The parts that work well are the combat scenes, and I really liked that the movie sympathizes with the enormous struggle that the war creates for our soldiers. But man, some of this dialogue was awful. Cooper walks in on his girlfriend cheating on him, and she shouts, "I did this to get attention from you!" There are a lot of lines in this movie that aren't dialogue, they're more like notes from a college professor. "Add more metaphors here." "Character needs to show more emotion." The script should have been better.

I won't say much about the politics. People are complaining that the movie puts a stamp of approval on the war in Iraq. Well, I'm as commie Liberal as they come. But our soldiers don't get to pick the wars they fight in. I did not want America fighting in Iraq, but these men and women are taught to follow orders.

...and how about that plastic baby?

As I said in the other thread, I was entertained, but this movie is clunky. From the bad dialogue to drama just for drama's sake (on the phone with his wife, sniper vs. sniper battle) to the fake babies. No way does this belong along side the best movies of the year. Fitting that it is up for best picture - I had similar feelings toward The Hurt Locker.

Not even a jazz fan but loved this movie. Only movie I enjoyed more last year was Nightcrawler.
I have those as my #1/#2 as well, but reversed. Plan to watch Nightcrawler again tonight now that I have my hands on the bluray.
No problem with Whiplash at #1 since I walked out of it stunned by the end, but enjoyed Nightcrawler more as an overall movie.

I think Zero Dark Thirty does all this material 10 times better.

I am surprised at hearing people's backlash at the ending (probably just imdb trolls or something). My take on the movie and one of the reasons I love it so much is that I think it leaves it open ended as far as having you think about whether the actions of the people involved is worth it. A lot of people seem to take issue with the movie saying that it condones Fletcher's actions. I don't see that at all.

Boxtrolls 7/10: It was cute but a bit dark and had an ugly art style. The trolls reminded me of minions. I found it funny when I least expected it... in a good way. There's one boxtroll that steals all the scenes. I kinda like the message about family and I liked the ending.

Saw it twice with my daughter, good movie.

Part of what I loved about the ending was that it was ambiguous. Pretty common theme in sports (Bear Bryant for example) but it was interesting to have it set in a music school.

Anyone saying the movie condoned Fletchers' actions missed what the director was getting at.

The Interview - Liked it very much. Thought it was pretty mindless yet entertaining. Certainly not worth all the fervor over. I actually thought TEAM AMERICA was much more inflammatory. That being said, they probably should have fictionalized the Asian country....BUT......the Three Stooges didnt.

Mud - Wasn't what I was expecting. Thought it was well acted pretty much up and down the credits. Where I thought it lost its steam was about halfway thru, when Sam Shepard met with Mud and allowed the audience to see his actual situation. Thought it would have been much better if they omitted a couple of scenes that did that (that scene and the scene when the boys met Juniper and she filled them in) and instead went with the boys POV on those instances (show Shepard arguing from a distance/Juniper not telling them what was in the letter)......movie worked much better when you didn't know his intentions. Went from a bit of a thriller drama to basically a buddy flick. Thought both of the boys were good though.
