Still in the theaters, but...

Stardust- a very solid date movie, who's only real fault is that it tried to hard to be Princess Bride and fell very short. Still definitely worth a watch, with a fun story and some fun acting ... Michelle Pfeifer pretty much stole the show.

Wild Hogs

It was OK. Guess I was expecting more laughs, but it was somewhat entertaining.
I'm genuinely glad you at least kinda liked it, but I'm dumbfounded that anybody expected even a single laugh out of this thing. I cringed every time I saw a preview for it.
Yeah I guess I kind of figured from the previews that it would be difficult for them to do anything more with the movie, but a part of me was hoping there might be something there. Meh.

Have Lifes of Others and Sexy Beast waiting.People like Sexy Beast? I have heard good things...
I  Sexy Beast...Awesome performance by Kingsley..If you're a fan of British gangster films (Lock, Stock, Layer Cake, Snatch, etc), I think you'll like it...
I second the recommendation, though I didn't "love" it.I think it is near the top of the second tier for British gangster films, but I like the genre. That movie gets a solid 3.5 to 4 star/B+ rating in my book.

Just watched Knocked Up last night.

Overrated. Maybe it's because it was the extended UR version, but 2 hours and 15min is too damn long for movies like this. Ben and his stoner buddies were pretty damn funny, I'll give the movie that. However, after about the first 1/2 hour their scenes were few and far between, and the movie dragged for me. There were some good moments b/t Ben and the guy played by Paul Rudd, but other than that I didn't get into it - probably b/c I didn't like the other characters. The chick he knocked up was bland, and I wanted to punch her sister.

40YO Virgin suffered from the length too, but the difference was his buddies were along for the ride throughout the movie and kept more laughs coming. That's a far better movie.

Vacancy

It was OK. Entertaining and actually pretty scary; I jumped a couple times. You really need to suspend your disbelief on this one.

Next - i really wanted to like this one. it started out like it had some promise, but it quickly developed into a mess. seemed like they had to quickly get the storyline finished so they threw together a hurried finale

This week's movies:

Akeelah and the Bee: Not my usual kind of movie ("feel-good" movie about a kid overcoming obstacles to succeed), but this one charmed me. Great performance by the little girl, and there seemed to be more substance to this than most movies of this type. Definitely recommend this one--great for people with kids 8+ years old as well.

Saraband: Bergman's last film; sequel 30 years later to Scenes from a Marriage. Was a big fan of the original movie, but just couldn't get into this one. Took the harsh, ugly world of Scenes from a Marriage to a whole new level, and I couldn't buy it. A bit of a disappointment, and I can't recommend it.

Year of the Dog: What a weird movie. Great cast (Peter Sarsgaard, Laura Dern, John C. Reilly) headed by Molly Shannon as a woman whose dog suddenly dies, and she struggles to find her way, becoming a vegan and extreme PETA-type activist. I liked the movie as it felt real, but it was just...very odd. No matter what the description might say, this is NOT a comedy, so if you don't have that expectation you might find it interesting.

Umberto D.: Wow. This Vittorio De Sica (The Bicycle Thief, Garden of the Finzi-Continis, etc.) film from 1952 is just one of the most stunning and beautiful movies I've seen in quite a while. The movie follows an elderly man, post-WWII, who is basically forgotten by a society trying to move on from the war. It's a movie that sneaks up on you...seems like not much is going on, but before you know it you're not only sucked into it but realizing that it will continue to affect you for a long time after seeing it. Beautiful and powerful.

Is that the one with Richard Gere and the cookoo wife?

I'm storing this one away for future viewing- hadn't even heard of it (even during my mini-De sica film spree of Bicycle Thief and Garden of Finzi)... Has anybody seen The Conformist? I remember it being stunning to look at- but I can't remember who made it... (yeah, I know- Google).

Watched two this weekend.....

Lady Vengeance to complete the trilogy. I liked it better than Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, but not as well as Oldboy. I could watch it again, I thought it was pretty good. Solid 6.5 out of 10 on this one.

Catch and Release was obviously one of my wife's choices. This one was all over the place. Have no idea why this movie was made, it was pretty bad and pointless. Will rate it a 1.0 out of 10.

So... the most recent wife-picked Netflick- Premonition- Holy hell, that was bad. Laughably edited and scored (wait, are we supposed to feel scared/shocked/sad/suspenseful now?) with massive holes continuity problems in a plot driven by a 3's Company contrivance (why talk about things when it's easier to not talk about them) and summed up by a sudden and irritating end. I spent the entire movie watching just so I could figure out why in the hell I was watching... not good.

Note to self: Check wife's netflix queue and delete Catch and Release (which is no doubt up near the top)... replace with  ... Marx Bros Duck Soup ...

Although not technically a movie......I watched the Battlestar Galactica miniseries this weekend.

Good stuff, my wife even liked it.

The Devil Wears Prada

Probably means I need to turn in my man card, but I really liked this movie, as did the wife (THAT combo rarely happens in my household). Meryl Streep's character must have been amazingly fun to play.
I should have hated this movie, but I didn't. I still think the fashion industry basically promotes bulemia and anorexia, but the movie worked for me.

Saw "Once", a movie I doubt will be in theatres very long but well worth searching for on DVD when it comes out. It's one of the best movies I've seen this year, and filled me with more raw emotion than any other movie I've seen during that time span. The songs are great, and become a character unto themselves. Everything was just perfect. It's about a friendship that grows out of love of music, between two people that have deep scars and fresh wounds from past relationships. Two people that can only really be themselves when expressing themselves musically. Great small film that is 10x the date movie those Ryan/Hanks romo-comedies are.

FWIW, the film got a 97% on the tomatometer.

 Probably my favorite film of the year so far...

That will be a DVD purchase for me...

 Wife and I both love this show. Got a little too Iraq-allegorical this last season, but still solid.
Yeah, I have lived without cable for about 4 years so haven't seen the show.Season one, disk one should be here on Wednesday.
I misread your OP- sorry about that. I thought the mini-series was jaw-droppingly good (for tv)- the other seasons are also really, really good.

very  One major flaw I thought about in this movie...

To your spoiler..mytagid = Math.floor( Math.random() * 100 );document.write("

EXACTLY! And- why was her mom questioning her about it "later" on? To the point that she had her committed?! She went to the freaking ER with the girls and hubby, there was a broken sliding door to prove it- and the younger daughter watched it happen too, IIRC.... but lock her up.

And... if you had a dream that vivid that your SO was going to die in such a specific way... you wouldn't bring it up? What's wrong, wife? Whoa... I had the strangest dream about you di... never mind. Not worth mentioning".

AND... she knows what's happening when- but instead of having the hubby get out of the car and run the hell away at the mile-marker, she has him turn the car around in the middle of a busy road?!

I could keep going with this one... :hot: ... terrible.*** SPOILER ALERT! Click this link to display the potential spoiler text in this box. ***");document.close();

eta: I have no idea why my own spoiler isn't working...

Went with Lives of others this weekend. Loved it.The director's interview on the extra section was as good as the movie. Hearing him discuss his motivation and attention to detail and the time/effort he put into it was $$.

Incredibly  I didn't want to stop watching the guy- couldn't believe how much thought he put into EVERY aspect of that movie. Stunning and awe-inspiring stuff.

Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck is the coolest name ever

Opinions on Idiocracy?
Hated it. It aspired to be satire, but it ended up being stupid mockery.
I've checked out some of the "best of" clips of that movie out on YouTube, and after watching them I wasn't all that excited to see the "not so best of" parts of it.Great concept, but horrible script.
Also, I'm really not a Luke Wison fan at all...I thought it was OK...Decent diversion, nothing more...

Certainly not in the same league as Office Space
But it had elctrolytes!!!

I can't believe you found somewhere where this actually is still in theatres? Anyway, saw it back in April and asked jdoggydogg (I think it was he) to start a "movies in theatres" thread just for this--see if you can do a search and you'll see how many of us loved it!!! Not just my favorite film this year, but one of my favorites ever. :bag: Completely agree with everything you've said. :hophead: Ah heck, here is the thread link.El Floppo, don't know what the Richard Gere movie is that you referred to, but it was not Akeelah and the Bee. Akeelah is a movie about an inner-city 11-year-old girl who goes to the National Spelling Bee, Richard Gere nowhere to be found (thank goodness).

Has grossed about 9 milion...

Very solid...

Wow, I just checked and it's still playing at the same theatre where I saw it in late April! I had no idea...just can't think of many instances where a small movie is out so long. Perhaps I'll go see it again, too! :)

:bs: :goodposting: :goodposting: No diggity. The director was very thoughtful. If every director put that much work into their art, we'd have a lot better films to watch.

I hated it. Not scary in the LEAST, imo, and Luke Wilson is just annoying. I didnt care at all about his character. I was hoping he would get offed and Kate would survive (for some reason I sympathized with her character. Probably because she was acting opposite Luke Wilson). Rusty from Vegas Vacation isnt capable of being scary...and the guy playing the hotel manager? Riiiight.

Two enthusiastic thumbs down.

I think Once is still playing at the theater about a block away from us- but if the movie is "touching" or "in the vein of Billy-Elliot/Full-Monty" cutesy English Humor/Melodrama (is it even English?) the wife sadly won't go anywhere near it. Krista... Richard Gere was in a movie involving- I thought a spelling bee and a crazy wife, maybe taking place in the SF Bay Area which wasn't bad. Obviuosly a different movie- my mistake. :bag: Does anybody know what I'm talking about?

Bee Season is the Gere movie...Once is Irish (set in Dublin), and isn't cutesy or precious in any way...

It's a really basic love story with amazing music and performances...

It is still playing at the Landmark Sunshine, which is the theater you are talking about....

Grab a knish at Yonah Shimmel's and go see it...

Better yet, bring the knish in to the theater with you...

Much better than

I really think you'll love it...

Watched Man of the Year the other night. What a steaming pile of crap that was.
I am glad you posted this. I almost TiVo'd this on HBO and you saved me the trouble.
Awful awful awful...Watched about 30 minutes of it and couldn't take it anymore...What's the last good comedy Robin Williams has been in?Insomnia and One Hour Photo were solid dramatic roles about 5 years ago, but comedies?I think you have to go back to The Birdcage, 11 years ago...Unreal...

Yeah. I think he's much better in dramatic roles. That shtick is tired.

The Fast and The Furious: Tokyo Drift

No, I did not rent this pile of garbage. Since I bought a plasma HDTV, I have been taping tons of HD programming just for the fun of checking it out. I made it about 15 minutes through this "movie" and shut it off.

I don't think it was Judge's intention but I felt like one of those futuristic Americans watching garbage by the end of the movie.Thumbs up to Maya Rudolph's body in that movie. Surprisingly hot. Face not so much.

Should have stayed for glimpses of super hot Asians. Between the hot Asians and drifting scenes I actually liked this movie.

FWIW, the film got a 97% on the tomatometer.
thanks for adding this movie to this thread. I probably wouldn't have seen it without your review and the posts that followed. Great movie. I need to buy the soundtrack, and the DVD when it's released."Away From Her" written and directed by Sarah Polley. Based on the story " The Bear Came Over the Mountain". It deals with Alzheimers. Very good movie.

I have a hard time watching Sarah Polley movies because I HATED "My Life Without Me" so much.
