The Constant Gardener - good story, acting and directing, but the movie was very slow and predictable.
Saw this last night. Thought it was terrible. You could watch the first 15 mins and know everything that was going to happen in the movie.

Red Eye with Rachel McAdams (Wedding Crashers)

Rent this movie.  Quite exciting.  Moreso than it has any right to be.  And McAdams is fantastic in it.
Watched this tonight. I probably would never have rented it but remembered a good review on FBG.Very meh. wait for HBO.

spoilers

It seemed unrealistic to go through so much trouble for the hit. Couldn't they blow up any room? And what was going on during the takeoff? I've never been in a plane with turbulance during a takeoff.

The whole premise was stupid.
Response to spoiler question in white.

No, they couldn't blow up any room. The Gub'ment guy stayed in the same room every time he went to that hotel, and from what I can gather, was not easy to target from the oceanside.

That's why they needed her, as the reservation manager in charge of the Gub'ment guy's agenda to change the room.

What difference does it make whether the plane hit turbulence during takeoff.

40 Year Old Virgin was very funny. Worth the rental.
That's been in "Very Long Wait" status in my Netflix queue for about a month now. Just watched "Dog Day Afternoon" for the first time this weekend. Pretty decent flick, and a good performance from when Pacino played characters other than "Cocky, boisterous, old arsehole". Fredo was good, too. Too bad Cazale died so young. He had a bright future as an actor.

"Broken Flowers" was a bit slow moving, but interesting. Bill Murray has become an amazing actor.

Also saw "The Killing Fields" for the first time. Pretty interesting. I'd never seen Sam Waterston in anything but Law & Order.

You are crazy. It wasn't the best movie I've seen, but it wasn't awful. I'd give it 8/10.

SPOILER:You knew her partner (the african man)was gay from watching the first 15 minutes?

We liked this a lot, but the ending was just a bit disappointing.

You never saw the man in the moon?

Why was it good? What did it do to earn an 8?I don't know how to color code my response, so can't respond to spoiler.

For starters, I thought the cinematography and dialogue were both well above average. Another spoiler:

I also liked the fact that it turned out the two of them were actually in love when originally I thought they were using each other for their own agenda.

Just change the text color to white.

caught these this weekend:The Big Bounce: not bad...just not GREATMillion Dollar Baby: I liked it..search for FBG threads on this oneMr. and Mrs. Smith: pretty good flick...Angelina looked good as usual..decent action movie

I thought it was a realistic ending, and I'm glad they didn't go the traditional Hollywood route with it.
You never saw the man in the moon?
Nope
So do you think that was his son or not?
Not sure. Could be, and he freaked out when he met his dad. Or not. I think the point was more about Don finding something to give a crap about in his rather shallow life.

I did like the scenes of Africa. I will admit that. The script, however, was predictable and, well, silly. Dialogue? This is an actual quote from the movie:

"Big pharmaceuticals are right up there with the arms dealers."

I mean, that's a little too much for me.

As for the Spoiler:

I didn't know he was gay, but I was pretty darn sure they weren't together. They were set up as too heroic - no character flaws whatsoever. The movie was clear - Rachel Weisz good (she is hot, I'll give them that) - the dude from Love Actually, bad. Very sophomoric.

I thought it was a very well made movie, but it was very predictable and I kept waiting for some surprise or for something else to happen. I'd give it a 5/10. A friend of mine wanted to rent it, but I told her not to bother  Spoiler:

The black guy being gay did surprise me, but it didn't really effect the movie for me. I never had any doubt that the two of them loved each other and I never once thought that she was cheating on him. It was pretty obvious the whole time what she was doing. After she died, the rest of the movie was just him retracing her steps.

I guess it all depends on your perspective. Don't you think that quote could hold some weight for innocent civilians being killed/harmed by the pharmas in Africa?

I'll respond to your spoiler for everyone to see because it involves a general comment on the movie - there was zero character depth. It was so silly. Character A - all good. Character B - all bad. No in between. No analysis of any difficult issues. No thought provoking issues. Nothing.

If that were even remotely true, than maybe it'd be interesting. But the movie doesn't even address whether it is true, or possibly not true or whether there's more involved than the one equation - pharma = bad.In some sense, this movie reminded me of Crash. No deep thought whatsoever.

Then see the previously mentioned "Serial Mom".Quite possibly the worst thing he's ever been associated with.

Rented Me and You and Everyone We Know.

If you liked American Beauty, you'll like this.  If you didn't, you probably won't.
This will be my next rental. Was a top 10 for Roeper and Ebert.
Watched two very good movies recently. The first was the afore mentioned "Me and You and Everyone we Know". It was very quirky and sometimes seemed to drift off into unnecessary lanes, but all in all it was a very enjoyable movie and one worth renting IF YOU LIKE human storylines and can pay attention to dialog. Like Keith R said, this isn't a movie for everyone. However, there was one scene in particular that had me laughing harder than I've ever laughed at any movie in well over a decade. Keith, without even saying anything, I bet 5 bucks you know EXACTLY which scene I'm talking about. Hilarious. Absolutely hilarious.

Next, I watched the documentary on Enron called "The Smartest Guys in the Room". Holy crap, was this amazing. I lived the Enron drama when it unfolded, working closely with my boss who was shorting their stock when their frauds were being unearthed. It was quite a ride and one that has never been seen before, nor will ever be duplicated. Enron was the 7th biggest corporation in the WORLD prior to it's unraveling. I had forgotten how bold their execs were and how unapologetically GREEDY they were as well. It's a bit long, but I could have watched it twice, back to back. The details of the California blackouts are startling, as is the close ties the Bush family had (and still has) with key cogs in the Enron heiracrchy. My god, our President was in bed with absolute criminals and nobody says "Boo" about it today. Unreal.

Anyhow, two excellent movies worth your time and 3 dollars.

Lord of War- :thumbup:40yo Virgin- 4 Brothers- (I liked it, but someone thought it was horrible. Far from bad, very entertaining. I guess it can be dissapointing if you expected it to be best picture))

A few movies I recently rented from the Netflix queue:Ali: Fear Eats the Soul - a film made in the 1970's, I found the film incredibly touching. It's about an older German lady falling in love with a younger Arab man and the consequences of their actions. Something the Lord Made - HBO film with Mos Def and Alan Rickman about a surgeon and his assistant. I normally try to avoid films with rappers as actors, but I was pretty shocked at how good Mos Def was. Great movie also. Youngblood - hockey movie with Swayze and Lowe...80's cheese. I didn't expect much, but I thought it still sucked. Overnight - rented this after reading someone on this board recommended it. Funny documentary, pretty sad how he crushes his life, but he deserves it for being such an ###. If you guys liked this, you might want to check out the movie "Tell Them Who You Are". It's another documentary about an aspiring filmmaker making a documentary on his dad, a famous and highly esteemed cinematographer.

Saw on Showtime the other night:Twisted - It had Ashely Judd  , Andy Garcia and Sam Jackson, so I thought it'd be decent. It wasn't. It was bad. Real bad. Unbelievably predictable, it used every cop movie cliche ever invented. Don't bother.

I have on the shelf at home:

Hotel Rwanda

The Notebook

Crash

Reviews will be forthcoming.
Hotel Rwanda - :thumbup:The Notebook - Didn't realize that you were a woman

Crash - Meh. Seriously overrated. I don't see why it's so well regarded. It has one point, and bludgeons the viewer with it.

I'm married. That just means I'm emasculated. Not completely female.

I'm lucky. My wife watches most of her chick flicks with her mom, so I don't have to be subjected to dreck like "Win a Date with Tad Hamilton".

my wife's chick flick buddy moved across the country. it was a sad day indeed.

Hotel Rwanda. Very good.

Remind me again what purpose the UN serves. Other than to make bureaucrats money, that is.
I saw this is the theaters when it was released, very good movie. Also there is a book out about the UN commander during that time (I forgot the title) and it is on my reading list. The one question I came away with was "why didn't we do more sooner"?

Because there was no money in it.As a side note, how does Nick Nolte continue to get roles? He was worse here than in Thin Red Line - where he was terrible.

I've got Flightplan shipping to me today from Netflix.  Has anyone seen this?
Not very good, and very predictible.
I saw it last night. Decent flick. Better than I thought it would be, but my expectations were low. I thought Jodie Foster did a good job. Also saw Red Eye (it was an airplane movie night). It was okay. I liked Flight Plan better.

Also saw The Perfect Man. It's a chick flick but I like chick flicks. It wasn't very good.

I saw Say Anything last weekend. Lady Myaths had been bugging me to Netflix that one for a while...Have to say, was very pleasantly surprised. That goes into my top 20. Fantastic movie.
