Meet the Robinsons was entertaining. I always find myself wrestling with the paradoxes any time I watch a time travel movie, even Bill and Ted, but I managed to push my way past that.
I saw some of this in the theater with my son. We had to leave because he was scared. Who would have thought that the bad guy in that movie would be too scary :moneybag:

I haven't seen it on DVD. It was by far the best sketch comedy show in the last 15 years.

Oh yes it is. Awesome show. That grunge version of The Monkees is one of the funniest things I've ever seen. "Kill Doug Schatkey! Peace."

Rented Stranger than fiction last night. While I enjoyed it, and it surpassed my expectations as to quality it was different from what I expected. It wasn't nearly as funny as I expected, and I can't decide whether I like or dislike the identity conflict the movie has with itself throughout the movie as to whether it's a comedy or tragedy. I'm inclined to like the indecivness because it parallels Harold's life, but at the same time it is still a bit annoying to not know what type of movie it is until it ends, because it won't make up it's mind.

I'm putting a vote out for Mr Show as the best sketch comedy show of the last 15 years. Nothing against the Ben Stiller show... just prefer Bob and Dave

:P I think I liked it for exactly that reason- I prefer making my own mind up about things, not being force-fed by usual Hollywood machine-made movies. Give me subtlety over decisiveness any day.

I hadn't heard of the show (I've never had HBO) so I looked it up on Wikipedia, interestingly.....
The Ben Stiller Show (1992 - 1993) - Bob Odenkirk, David Cross, Dino Stamatopoulos, and Brent Forrester all wrote for the series, and went on to write for Mr. Show. Odenkirk was also a cast member on the show, and Cross had bit roles in two episodes. Director Troy Miller directed parts of both series. Many of the stars of the show appeared in episodes of Mr. Show, including Ben Stiller in "If You're Going to Write a Comedy Scene, You're Going to Have Some Rat Feces in There" and Janeane Garofalo ("What to Think"). Cast member Andy **** filmed a role as Eleanor Roosevelt in the episode "If You're Going to Write a Comedy Scene, You're Going to Have Some Rat Feces in There", but it was cut for being too over-the-top.

I love Mr. Show. Certainly more cutting-edge than Stiller's show. I think Mr. Show is the logical continuation of Kids in the Hall. Much like Monty Python, I am amazed at the risks that Mr. Show took. Not that every skit was funny, but that show was genius.

I just watched "Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon" which I wholly recommend. Best horror movie I've seen recently.

From IMDB:

The next great psycho horror slasher has given a documentary crew exclusive access to his life as he plans his reign of terror over the sleepy town of Glen Echo, all the while deconstructing the conventions and archetypes of the horror genre for them.
Lots of great little touches here, like the killer describing all the cardio work he has to put in to keep up with a bunch of running teens while he has to look like he's walking. This movie is along the same lines as "Scream", but not as goofy. You can tell the writers really love the horror genre and I thought they really nailed the psychology of why Jason, Mike Meyers, Freddy, etc. all do what they do.

If you're looking for a fresh horror movie to watch this halloween, pop in this little gem.

(edit to add full title of the movie)

Anyone seen Hostel 2 yet? The first one was horrible - is the second one better?
I went to the theatres to see it. It's basically the same as the first one, except women getting killed in this one. About the only thing different in part 2 is that they were trying to show a little bit more from the perspective of the people paying to do the killing. I liked the first one, but didn't like this one as much. I don't think many around here liked the first one at all, so obviously stay away...

Wild Hogs

It was OK. Guess I was expecting more laughs, but it was somewhat entertaining.
I'm genuinely glad you at least kinda liked it, but I'm dumbfounded that anybody expected even a single laugh out of this thing. I cringed every time I saw a preview for it.
Ugh. I remember seeing the preview for this in the movie and thinking to myself "Oh my, who on earth would want to see that steamy pile?" Then the wife says, "OOhhh that looks like a good movie" :lmao: I was browsing our Netflix, and saw Wild Hogs sitting there, and I tried to delete it, and she caught me and yelled, so now it is queued to be next in line, amongst Rumor Has It, Idiocracy, Smokin Aces, License to Wed, and You Me and Dupree....... :lmao:
Jesus Christ, man. Remind me never to get married.
Mrs. Dogg and I have an agreement: we never have to watch each others' crappy movies.

I watch A LOT of movies. One to two a night usually. Because of this, I typically only post in this thread if I see something either really really good, or really really bad. I caught one last night, that I wouldn't really characterize as awesome, or anything, but it was MUCH better than expected. Probably because I was completely off-base in what I thought it was to begin with.

I've had this movie called Hard Candy in my queue for a long time. I thought it was a typical horror movie. I like scary movies, but only good ones, and they are so few and far between. I haven't seen an American horror movie that I liked since The Ring came out, but I digress. Anywho, I keep trying to watch a horror film from time to time, only to be disappointed.

So, this was on HBO or one of those movie channels last night, and since it was already in my queue (way on down there), I figured I would give it a shot. COMPLETELY had it pegged wrong. Was actually more suspense than horror, but involved a suspected pedophile and a 14 year old girl. Now, I realize that description probably doesn't make anyone want to see this movie, and I don't want to give anything away, but let's just say if you like Audition, maybe you'll like this movie. It was pretty good.
I wish you'd go ahead and put some reviews up of the ones you watch. You're one of the people with the best taste in movies around here (best taste = likes the same things I like :P ), and I for one would be glad to know even if you thought something was "meh".
:lmao: Last night I watched Day Watch, the sequel to the Russian movie Night Watch. I thoroughly enjoyed the first one, and liked the second part of the trilogy. Night Watch was the most expensive, most special effected (is that a term?) movie to come out of Post-Cold War Russia. Sci-Fi/Suspense/Horror kinda. Difficult to describe, but a good overview can be found here:

Night Watch

Day Watch

Worth a check out, and just came out Tuesday, so snag it off Netflix before it hits Very Long Wait.

Oh, and krista, I regularly scan your movie queue on there. :)

Tramp. ;) ... but that's hot.

fwiw- I saw Night Watch a while back- think I liked it.

Just watched Sunshine on Joox(not sure if this counts as a rental)Pretty good si-fi movie
Danny Boyle straight to DVD/Cable flick right? Probably going to check that one out, saw the preview before 28 weeks later...along with another movie I never heard of....and I can't remember right now :blackdot:

definately much better than expected. Ferrell shows some chops.Kinda like Jim Carey did in The Majestic...another underrated film.
Hmmm... don't even remember the Majestic... oh- wait a sec, yeah I do. I think I may have even watched it... IIRC- me no likey. But I don't remember Carey's performance.I totally agree about Ferrell- nicely understated performance by a guy who doesn't normally go hand-in-hand with understatment. But I think Truman Show is my favorite of Carey's performances (I like the Cable Guy, but he's kinda in "comedian" mode there)... or Eternal Sunshine.

I watched The Wendell Baker Story the other night. This is pretty much the dictionary definition of Meh. I like Luke Wilson. I like Owen Wilson. I really like Harry Dean Stanton. I like Will Ferrell. Even the cast could not really get me into this movie. I didn't hate it. It just ended, and I was thinking, "Well THAT was a waste of time."Had to be at work early the next morning, but I couldn't really go to sleep on top of that colossal disappointment. So, I popped in Talk to Me, with the plan of watching it until I fell asleep. This movie was GREAT. Don Cheadle is wonderful, as always. Of course, I watched the whole thing, and was a zombie all the next day, but I'm glad I watched it. Soundtrack is amazing also. Two thumbs up.

Let's see here:

Crank Wanted to like this one, as I really do enjoy Jason Statham....however this one didn't work for me. The frenetic pace and camera shots were okay, but got a little annoying after awhile. Hey, it was something different, I'll give them that. Story line was kinda weak too, but I expected that. I probably will not watch it again, and certainly doesn't warrant a recommendation from me......I'll give it a 3.5 out of 10

The Wicker Man 2006 movie with Nick Cage.....caught this yesterday afternoon and this was awesome. Okay, just kidding. Movie sucked, hard. 1/10

:lmao: It's OK--I was just checking his out earlier this evening as well. We have a little "you show me yours; I'll show you mine" thing going. :)
Kinky...
And his was not the ONLY queue I looked at tonight, either. :o
Tramp. ... but that's hot.

fwiw- I saw Night Watch a while back- think I liked it.
How do I get in on this action?

Crank is easily among the worst 10 movies I've seen in the last five years.Nice Blu-Ray disc though.

I watch A LOT of movies. One to two a night usually. :nerd: Because of this, I typically only post in this thread if I see something either really really good, or really really bad.

Very excited about Talk to Me--didn't realize it was out already and am moving it up from slot 431 in the queue. :football: I've continued to work feverishly to get rid of my primary queue overflow list (I will still have a secondary one  ), until yesterday when I seem to have hit a wall of over-movie-edness. :( I'm down to under 10 on the primary queue overflow list, though. I have so many to report that it's not worth subjecting everyone to individual reviews.

Movies I barely watched as I really couldn't get into them: Romper Stomper, Doctor Zhivago, Stander, Thumbsucker, Sunset Boulevard

Very good "small" movies that you might have missed: Lonesome Jim, Loggerheads. I'll also put The Squid and the Whale in this category, though it is a bit better known--loved the performances and the feel of that movie. Also will throw in Everything is Illuminated, which wins my award for Best Movie That Can Barely Be Considered an Adaptation of a Book. I was very charmed and moved by the film, even though it completely guts a book that I enjoyed.

Also good but very odd: The Science of Sleep. Of course, for me, anything with Gael Garcia Bernal is a slice of heaven, anyway. If you're the type to partake in hallucinogenic substances, this movie would be a good one to watch at that time. Also good but odd--Crazy Love, the documentary I've referenced in another thread, about a woman who marries the man who threw acid in her face and blinded her. Not the most compelling documentary in the world, but the story is so interesting it's worthwhile to watch.

Probably good but so disturbing I had to turn it off: Mysterious Skin. Just couldn't watch the child sexual abuse.

My favorite classic from the past couple of weeks: The Umbrellas of Cherbourg. My god, what a beautiful movie. Captivating and bittersweet--you can see why this one is a classic. And Catherine Deneuve is stunning.

 Last night I watched Day Watch, the sequel to the Russian movie Night Watch.

The Black Dahlia

Awful. Didn't bother to finish it. Hard to believe Brian DePalma was responsible for this mess.

And let's face up to it: Scarlett Johansson is awful. This is not an actor that can play a wide variety of roles. I think Johansson was fine in one film I can remember (Ghost World). But that's it. She's like Keanu Reeves in Parenthood. Fine if she limits herself. But nowhere near good enough to play in a period film.

:football: I decided this when trying to watch The Girl with the Pearl Earring. The only time I thought she was good was in Lost in Translation.

She's at her best when she is playing disaffected modern American teenagers/early 20 year olds...Other than that, she has no range, and is a horribly flat actress (Ironic)...

The fact that she continues to get roles (especially period pieces = ) amazes me...

I really liked "A Love Song for Bobby Long." She was good in that.

Her buttcrack looked pretty good. But mostly she just broods in that movie.

Beautiful actors get roles all the time regardless of talent. Sad, but true.

A friend of mine is urging me to check out "The Ben Stiller Show" on DVD. Even brought me in a copy today at work.

Worth checking out, or should I get new friends?
I haven't seen it on DVD. It was by far the best sketch comedy show in the last 15 years.
Oh yes it is. Awesome show. That grunge version of The Monkees is one of the funniest things I've ever seen. "Kill Doug Schatkey! Peace."
I'm putting a vote out for Mr Show as the best sketch comedy show of the last 15 years. Nothing against the Ben Stiller show... just prefer Bob and Dave
another :wall:
And another.Mr. Show was brilliant. I think all of the seasons are out on DVD now, if anyone hasn't watched it I strongly recommend it.

Well, you're bigger than jdoggydogg but smaller than smoovysmoov. And smaller than me. :lmao:Seriously, though, we have added each other as "friends" on netflix, and I'd be happy to have you on there, too, if you're interested. Pop over a PM if you want to. We need to get El Floppo and some of the others here in there, too, though with him it's mostly so I can make fun of his queue. :P

Ok, sent a PM invite to everyone on the above list.

Legend of the 7 Golden Vampires: Hammer vampire movie merged with Shaw Brothers kung fu. I was more impressed with the idea than the execution. I'm a big kung fu movie (wuxia to get technical) fan, and I was kinda disappointed with the action in this one.

Manhunter: The original prequel to Silence of the Lambs, which was redone as Red Dragon a few years ago. Pretty much the same film, except for the cheesy synth background music. The ending is different from Red Dragon as well.

I didn't see Red Dragon, but I loved Manhunter when I originally saw it. That was many years ago, though, so maybe it hasn't held up well over time?

A lot of it was really good. I loved the skit about the time traveller that was a bad history student. She goes back in time and meets up with George Washington, who is hopeful that she knows about all the battles, outcomes, and strategies of the British...only to get: "I know you're supposed to go across the Delaware....and shoes, bring lots of shoes!"

I'd say it's held up quite well actually.

i saw "blade runner: the final cut" over the weekend here in chicago. while some people are Star Wars or Star Trek geeks, i'm all about "blade runner". this is the iconic sci-fi film of my youth. there are only a couple of films that i will always watch until their conclusion when i find them on tv.

this complete, final version is really no different than the 1992 release. it's cleaned up a little here and there. little flourishes here and there but it's essentially the same. for the most part, the casual fan won't notice any differences. the joy for the hard core fans of the film comes with seeing it on the big screen in all its glory. it's such a fantastic film. i saw it with a friend who had never seen it before, so it was neat to see it with fresh eyes.

the previews for the upcoming joe strummer documentary - "the future is unwritten" - have me really stoked to see this. the best line from it comes from a tv interview he gave...

Reporter: "Joe, we're going to have your name up on screen. Would you like anything under your name?"

Joe: "I'd like you to write 'Punk Rock Warlord. With 'Warlord' being one word."

That had me in stitches for the rest of the night. I'm so looking forward to this...
