i saw "blade runner: the final cut" over the weekend here in chicago. while some people are Star Wars or Star Trek geeks, i'm all about "blade runner". this is the iconic sci-fi film of my youth. there are only a couple of films that i will always watch until their conclusion when i find them on tv.this complete, final version is really no different than the 1992 release. it's cleaned up a little here and there. little flourishes here and there but it's essentially the same. for the most part, the casual fan won't notice any differences. the joy for the hard core fans of the film comes with seeing it on the big screen in all its glory. it's such a fantastic film. i saw it with a friend who had never seen it before, so it was neat to see it with fresh eyes. the previews for the upcoming joe strummer documentary - "the future is unwritten" - have me really stoked to see this. the best line from it comes from a tv interview he gave...Reporter: "Joe, we're going to have your name up on screen. Would you like anything under your name?"Joe: "I'd like you to write 'Punk Rock Warlord. With 'Warlord' being one word."That had me in stitches for the rest of the night. I'm so looking forward to this...
 to Blade Runner (saw the final cut a couple of weeks ago, mentioned it some pages ago)  to The Future is UnwrittenSaw it Saturday night, it is fantastic...I am biased, as I am a Clash nut, but it was just really, really well done...Julien Temple didn't just make your standard "life of" documentary...It is like a performance piece in its own right...Lots of great footage (including the earliest footage of the CLash, taken by Temple himself, a huge highlight for me), and lots of great commentary about how Strummer and the Clash effected people's lives (Bono, Flea, a bunch of others)...

Oh, and krista, I regularly scan your movie queue on there. :)

:lmao: It's OK--I was just checking his out earlier this evening as well. We have a little "you show me yours; I'll show you mine" thing going. :)
Kinky...
And his was not the ONLY queue I looked at tonight, either. :o
Tramp. ... but that's hot.fwiw- I saw Night Watch a while back- think I liked it.
How do I get in on this action?
All depends on how big it is. Your queue, that is.
Let me measure it......Is 347 movies big?
Well, you're bigger than jdoggydogg but smaller than smoovysmoov. And smaller than me. :unsure:Seriously, though, we have added each other as "friends" on netflix, and I'd be happy to have you on there, too, if you're interested. Pop over a PM if you want to. We need to get El Floppo and some of the others here in there, too, though with him it's mostly so I can make fun of his queue. :P
It's not the size of the queue, it's the quality that counts ;)

Legend of the 7 Golden Vampires: Hammer vampire movie merged with Shaw Brothers kung fu. I was more impressed with the idea than the execution. I'm a big kung fu movie (wuxia to get technical) fan, and I was kinda disappointed with the action in this one.Manhunter: The original prequel to Silence of the Lambs, which was redone as Red Dragon a few years ago. Pretty much the same film, except for the cheesy synth background music. The ending is different from Red Dragon as well.
I didn't see Red Dragon, but I loved Manhunter when I originally saw it. That was many years ago, though, so maybe it hasn't held up well over time?
 Manhunter rocks.

Good list, as I've never seen most of those movies before. The one I did see was "Hustle and Flow" and I thought it was quite good. I saw Gallipoli years ago, but can't remember anything about it.

Sherrybaby = Maggie Gyllenhaal's boobies.

Gallipoli - fine Peter Weir film; not your typical approach to a war film

The Great Waldo Pepper - i like this one still but it is a bit of a period piece

Sherrybaby - maggie g is always good

Who Killed the Electric Car?

Hustle and Flow

The Bad News Bears (B.B. Thornton remake)

Rent

Go - pretty good but not great.

Akeelah and the Bee

:D Manhunter rocks.
yes it does. I didn't like Red Dragon at all. They stole scenes and lines word for word from Manhunter, and these were lines that weren't in the book. that's weak.

DeathProof... I really wanted to like this movie. I really did. Sadly,..... I didn't. The film was more about stroking the ego and fanboy nature of QT than being a quality B-movie. I liked Kurt... I liked the Butterfly girl... I didn't like anyone else. There was too much dialogue, too much setup, to much Zoe Bell infatuation and too little action, characterization and excitement.

And I am sorry to be a stalker, but

I didn't hate Red Dragon, but Manhunter did not need to be remade. Aside from the cheesy music, Manhunter is a brilliant movie. I like Fiennes, but no one can match the creepy bad guy from the original.

Just Rented Chuck & Larry. The GF is making me wait until she gets home to watch it. 3 hours and counting.

<_< Have you not been reading my posts about trying to get rid of my primary, but not my secondary, queue overflow list?!?! I didn't even have Sherrybaby in my queue until your recommendation, and then I had gradually eased it up to where it was #14. Just moved it to #10. That's as high as it can go right now, but five of the top 10 are not out quite yet, so it's higher than it appears.Palookaville resides on the primary queue overflow list, but I have only 7-8 other movies on there right now, so it will get a shot soon to make it to the queue. :lmao:

Eh. I laughed a couple times, but overall it really wasn't that good. And I've also come to the conclusion that Jessica Beil is overrated.

Home of the Brave

a few Iraq war veterans come home to find the war is still with them --- Terrible acting, terrible script.

Jessica Biel can't save every movie.

I'll answer both questions: it isn't worth the wait and it sucks. Luckily, I didn't even have to see it to come to that conclusion - thus - saving us both the agony of watching that "movie."

 Another vote of confidence for Manhunter, which was my go-to recommendation for people renting a movie. Maybe it's been a while, or maybe I'm just a big fan of 80s music- but I remember really liking the soundtrack. Don't remember the score... but the soundtrack had some great Shriekback on it amongst others. Pretty sure I owned that thing on cassette.

Brick... the LA highschool noirish thing, right? Pretty sure I liked that.

I think Brick was bad. I don't know how many film noir you guys have seen, but Brick doesn't compare. Great idea: take young people and put them in a noir setting. But that is some of the worst acting I've seen in a critically-acclaimed movie.

Certainly. Better examples of modern noir would be Blood Simple or The Last Seduction

1408 - Pretty entertaining horror movie. I liked the emphasis on the psychlogical chills as opposed to the typical gore fest that passes for horror all too often. I loved Samuel Jackson as the hotel manager and enjoyed Cusak as the lead, though I thought his performance was a tad uneven. I enjoyed the fact that there were a few questions left unanswered that gives you something to mull over and talk about with others. I get tired of having every nuance of the plot spoon-fed to me. Overall, I give the movie a 6/10, but would give it a solid 8/10 for the horror genre.

Hmmm- I enjoyed Brick for what it was. Yeah, the acting wasn't great- but I liked the overall feel of it, and liked they "went for it" instead of just making another dumb teen flick, which it very easily could've been.Blood Simple... c'mon now- one's a flat-out classic, and the other is a lightly-viewed, small movie worth a rental, IMO, but not worth getting worked up over. Not exactly the same ball-park.eta: I just remembered the affectation in Brick, in language and action... you definitely have to buy into that to not be put off by the movie (my wife did a lot of  about it before falling asleep midway through). I thought where it was at it's best was where it bumped up against and made light of that (IIRC, a scene with drug-dealing kid's mom)

"Red Rock West" get any love?
Seriously contemplated mentioning that movie in the post above. Loved that one, too.
Both are John Dahl, so it's not a real surprise. Dahl's also done "Rounders" and the recent Ben Kingsley flick "You Kill Me". Both are solid. I liked "RRW" more than "TLS" because it didn't try so hard. Plus, Dwight Yoakam's scene is pretty damn great.

Blood Simple is vastly superior to TLS. They're both good but Blood Simple has the Coen Bros fingerprints all over it.
And  ... although my margin between BS and TLS might not be as large as saintfool's. I liked both, but think BS is a masterpiece, while TLS is just a good movie worth renting.
