Finally saw There Will Be Blood.

Why did I wait so long? Because while Hard Eight and Boogie Nights were very good, Magnolia is one of my least favorite films ever.

Positives:

Very good first half - good scenery, good story, very interesting subject matter, good acting.

Negatives:

One of the worst soundtracks ever. The music was so bad, it was a negative distraction whenever it was used.

The second half was horrible and endless.

PT Anderson has a unique style but just can't seem to stop a film from getting boring.

I like the movie. I don't like the soundtrack. The soundtrack feels like a composed piece of music that was not made for the film. I don't mind that it's atonal and screechy. I don't like the way the soundtrack was edited into some of the scenes.

We probably had this conversation already. But...The mood of the compositions was perfect. The movie is disarming and tense. But there are scenes with normal conversation where the screechy violins simply detract from the dialogue. I like the compositions, but they are placed in scenes in an almost deliberately weird context. My beef is more with the choices of placement than the compositions themselves.

I agree with this. Sometimes the music conveyed the mood but too many times it was irritating and made me notice it more than the film.A soundtrack shouldn't draw attention to itself and distract from a film.

Reminds me of in Magnolia when they played One Is The The Loneliest Number about 5 minutes too long.

Ironically in Boogie Nights I thought the soundtrack worked really well.

I agree with the Boogie Nights comment. I actually liked the use of soundtrack in Magnolia - particularly the unexpected scene where the cast songs the Aime Mann song.

Was VERY disappointed watching this. Pretty bad acting, the plot was obvious and full of holes, etc. Don't mind Eastwood's directing, but he really should stay behind the camera. Seemed like the same character from Million Dollar Baby placed into a crappy update of Boyz N the Hood to me. Really couldn't find anything I liked about the movie and had to fight the urge to turn it off after about 45min.

Didn't really care about the soundtrack, but otherwise felt exactly the same Mojo. 1st: very good movie. 2nd half: why bother?

Watched Quantum of Solace last night. I really liked Casino Royale and the new, gritty/dark/psychotic Bond, but surprisingly I didn't care much for this one. It had its moments, but the plot struck me as being extraordinarily muddled. Basically, Bond just went around killing a bunch of guys. It's as if this film existed only for the purpose of setting up the next few installments.

On the other hand, this was the first movie I got to watch in 1080p BR. It was awesome eye candy.

Lone Star -- Watched this again. Just a terrific movie. If you've not seen it, I highly recommend getting it.

Blindness One of the worst movies I've ever seen. The blatantness and tone of the movie made it unbearable. The story had so much potential but the execution was a joke. It was less believable than The Day The Earth Stood Still. What is worse is that what made it unbelievable had little to do with the "blindness" but everything to do with the character interaction. .5/5 stars

The Spirit...last night was a bad movie night. Just when I thought it couldn't get worse than Blindness I was confronted with "The Spirit." What a piece of ####. The only saving grace, and therefore the only reason I'm giving it more than .5 stars in my book, was Samuel L. Jackson dressed as a ninja and then a nazi. That was actually funny. Otherwise nothing made sense in this movie, the dad from the wonder years was honry as all get out. This movie should be banned in world wide. .75/5 stars

I checked out Gran Torino tonight. I liked this movie a lot. Great juxtaposition of an old racist learning to love his hmong neighbors as family and a help a boy become a man. Had several fun (albeit quite racist) moments and Clint will remind you of your onry grandpa. Plus, an ending no Eastwood fan would ever expect. I was suprised... and i give it 4 stove-door bullet proof vests out of 5 stove-door bullet proof vests.

Edited to add: I'm buzzing and just took a sleeping pill. Hence, the errors.

Watched a few this weekend......

Mummy: Tomb of the Emperor Dragon

I think the success of the first two was predicated on the fun loving, free spirited Brendan Fraser and his relationship with Rachel Weisz. Add in a brother-in-law sidekick and some special effects, and viola. So, what do they do in this one? Well, first change the wife, then add a grown up son. The relationship between Fraser and Bello was non-existent, forced, downright awkward at some points. The son's addition was dreadful. The special effects bordered on ridiculous. Needless to say, this one was not very highly enjoyed by this movie goer (or rather dvd renter). I like Jet Li and Michelle Yeoh (who is evidently the only english speaking asian middle aged martial artist), so I can't quite score it a zero, but not much better than that. Score it a 0.5/5.0

Death Race

Big Jason Statham fan, kind of a guilty pleasure I suppose, and of course I enjoyed the campy original (just rewatched it after seeing this one) so I figured I'd give this one a try. I knew I was not in store for any type of moving experience, just a far fetched, adventure. Well, they changed the entire premise of the original, not really sure why, and added two serious actors in Ian McShane and Joan Allen, I guess to give it some sort of cinematic validity? They must have been really hard up for a paycheck as neither fit in at all. One saving grace, was the hotness of Statham's navigator, big fan here. But I can't say I would ever recommend this one to anyone, even as a tongue in cheek action/adventure. Pretty awful stuff here, another 0.5/5.0

caught "away we go" over the weekend. maya rudolph, in particular, and john krascinski do a really nice job with this gentle comedy. my wife said that the way the scenes were done that you can tell sam mendes' background in directing theatre. she loved this film.

Marathon on a rainy day...

Good ****: Odd indie film about a guy working in a porn shop who tries to pick a woman that comes in everyday. They both have some serious issues, her moreso than him. It is pretty much the opposite of every romantic comedy out there which I thought was great. 3.5/5

Fanboys: 4 Star Wars fanatics set out to steal a copy of Episode 1 from Lucas' house before it is released because one of them has terminal cancer and won't be alive for the release. One of the better comdies I've seen lately... if you know your Star Wars and Star Trek. Lots of hilarious references and some great cameos by people like Shatner, Seth Rogan, Carrie Fisher, Jay and Silent Bob, Will Forte and Billy Dee Williams. Oh and Kristen Bell dressed up as Leia . 4/5

My Bloody Valentine: It brought as much to the table as your typical slasher flick. Some nice and gruesome kill scenes but they got boring in a hurry. One of the worst endings ever. 1/5

She's Just Not All That Into You: Meh... Good cast but really nothing exciting or new. Not very funny, and waaaay too long. 1.5/5

Storytelling -- Todd Solondz certainly makes interesting movies. I haven't quite figured out if I liked this or not. I think I did. It's pretty humorous and a pretty good commentary on -- well, lots of things.

I watched this last night and thought it was superb. Classic Solondz, I thought. It has that dark humor that we've come to expect from him. It also has that scathing, unsparing critique of our culture. The thing I appreciate the most about Solondz is that he recognizes his role in it all and the commentary become a kind of self-criticism. It kind of packs a punch as the film sinks in.

I only wish I knew about it a year ago, when it was hitting the web, so I could have sent in my own Evil League of Evil demo tape. If you watch that part of the DVD, there's a couple of really good ones................and a couple of really sucky ones.

I read a couple of solid positive reviews about this one so I had queued it up on the netflix. However, after ready about it a bit more, I wasn't sure how badly I wanted to see it so I killed it. Well, I saw it was on last night and said wth, and gave it a whirl. Not quite sure what to say about this one, as it was a kind of choppy in and out all over the place semi-documentary. It kept my interest pretty much, as the time/place/musical scene had me mildly interested, I guess I thought it was going to be more of a story of Joy Division (which would probably interest me more) instead of a story about Tony Wilson - even though he says in the movie the piece is not about him, well, it is mostly about him. It was okay I suppose, but I guess I couldn't get if it was meant to be a comedy (it wasn't particularly funny at all), a documentary (bits and pieces of truth with bits and pieces of fiction), or what. All in all it was not overwhelming, but I don't feel worse for wear after viewing. Let's rank it a 1.5/5.0.

Re-watching movies is critical in determining a movie's quality, I think. Conversely, while I liked Bull Durham and Dances with Wolves when they were first released, they have aged very poorly.

loved this movie- but I loved Factory Records (and especially Joy Division), so that might have influenced things for me. really liked how they broke down the 4th wall (asides to the audience including spot-lighting cameos).- I just saw god

i really liked it but, then, i am a steve coogan fan. also, as a fan of music, it had a particular appeal for me.watched "kung fu panda" with the wife tonight on hbo. it's really a lot of fun. great animation ad a loving tribute to the genre.

Always thought it was kind of creepy that the director directed his daughter in a sex scene (and an aggressive scene, as well).

it doesn't age well. i saw it as a kid in the theater with my brother and absolutely loved it. in the intervening years, i have caught it on cable every now and then. i will still watch it but i'm not exactly proud of it. it's more "zardoz" than anything else on boorman's resume. i still think "hope and glory" is maybe his best work.

it doesn't age well. i saw it as a kid in the theater with my brother and absolutely loved it. in the intervening years, i have caught it on cable every now and then. i will still watch it but i'm not exactly proud of it. it's more "zardoz" than anything else on boorman's resume. i still think "hope and glory" is maybe his best work.

Yeah, I am really puzzled by Boorman's direction. He does not get good performances out of his actors here. And furthermore, the film is edited and filmed very erratically.
