I had very low expectations. Since you liked this, you may enjoy the short HBO miniseries called Summer Heights High. Very similar.

Rush

1991 drug/crime movie with Jennifer Jason Leigh and Jason Patric as undercover narcs, who start to like the drugs they are supposed to be buying as evidence a little too much. Very well done, but hard to watch in some places. 2nd only to Requiem for A Dream when it comes to drug danger deterrent movies. Reminded me a lot of Freidkin's To Live in Die in LA with how it pulled no punches, was unpredictable, and gruesome. Awesome ending.

Good movie. Patric was in a noir thriller around that time named After Dark, My Sweet. Highly recommended.

Cool. Never heard of it. Bumping it to the top of my queue. Worthwhile noir is few and far between these days, and by these days I mean the last 30 years.

Bruce Dern is in that one, as well. I haven't seen it in like 15 years. But I remember liking it very much.

"the limey" isn't an especially original film - revenge films like "get carter", "payback" and "point blank" all do pretty much the same thing - but stamp makes it interesting somehow. soderbergh does what we have come to expect from him now as far as devices go - editing, for example - but this is such an early film for him. it's kind of fresh in that context.

I agree. Especially about Red Rock West. I need to see The Limey again.

A bunch of interesting films mentioned in the last few pages that I haven't even heard of.... the sci-fi one? This kid has kept me out of movies too much, the little *******. Also great to see Primer get a bump... that one was a lot of fun, and much kudos for havng been made so cheaply but still pulling off decent acting, great story and editing.

I caught "Running the Sahara" on Showtime recently. Three guys decide to run from Sierra Leon to Egypt... insane accomplishment, but not as intereting a film. A gb I used to do triathlons with stayed in the endurance game and did a race in the Sahara- something like 150 miles over 3 days... made me think of him.

Also rewatched The Lives of Others... it's been said over and over in here- by me as well- best movie of the century.

Also- does Clint Eastwood have something terminal? Seems like he's busting movies out more than one a year, like he's racing to get as many done as possible before... dunno.

Jdoggy- this isn't the first time you watched In Bruges is it? Totally agree about Ferrill who was great- but thought the writing totally put this one into semi-classic realm. Oh... but I flat out hated Cassandra's Dream. Hey Woody- try out some new themes for a change. Damn.

those are two films that i am fond of. "24 hour" was my introduction to him actually. "Tristram" was a lot of fun if you are into those kinds of films. it's a bit like truffaut's "day for night", i think, in that it goes beyond the behind the scenes narrative. it's a kind of meta-film-film-adaptation, y'know?

Yeah, first time for In Bruges. I wasn't really avoiding it. I just never got around to seeing it. Very glad I watched it. Cassandra's Dream was a very conventional drama, but I thought Ferrill made it worth watching.

I was also surprised at how much I enjoyed the flick.Coogan overplayed it in a few scenes, but he was quite good for the duration.

I liked the Elisabeth Shue cameo but her character seemed underwritten. She kept saying how angry she was about the business, and how horrible everyone was, but she never gave specifics.

It would have been funny if she had said something about Pat Morita pinching her ###.

Watched this last night late, after much wine and endless hours with in-laws. It was hilarious. I fell asleep before it was over, but not because I was not enjoying it immensely. I laughed out loud repeatedly. Way over the top and an inordinate amount of male genitalia, but very, very funny. I thought is was significantly funnier than his first movie.

Saw Paranormal Activity a couple of weeks ago.

Big fan of the genre and the style...watched it alone in a dark apartment...great mood and setting for a scary flick.

What a friggin' letdown. Man, this movie really stunk. A couple of tense scenes, but the overall experience consisted of me wanting to deliver alternating beatings to the two characters.

Changeling was not what I expected. I hadn't planned on renting it until I realized that Clint Eastwood directed it. He really is a great director, his movies have so much feel to them. Angelina is amazing, probably her best film. Much different movie than previews and ads lead me to believe. I loved it. 4/5

Woody Harrelson was a pleasant surprise and the action scenes in LA were so over the top they were funny, but it was very preachy and the science behind the end of the world was

Watched "Southland Tales" yesterday. I enjoyed it, but I found it to be extremely challenging to keep up with. With all of the well known names in it and with the director being the same guy who did Donnie Darko, I was was amazed to find out it was 2-3 years old and I'd never heard of it. Sometimes I'm baffled by some of the movies that fall through the cracks while stuff like Transformers 2 gets a good year worth of advertising. I'd give it a 5/5, with the caveat the I immediately felt I needed to watch it again.

Also got around to seeing Zombieland and Jennifer's Body.

Zombieland: I was surprised at how good this was, with the seemingly endless run of zombie movies lately, I had pretty low expectations which were quickly surpassed. I thought the rules list was a nice touch. Kind of fell apart down the stretch for me, but still a solid 4/5.

Jennifer's Body: Well, it was certainly an interesting follow-up to Juno. I wasn't sure what kind of expectations to have for a movie that shared its name with a Hole song. That said, I actually enjoyed it. Very solid B-movie. 4/5

It seems like you can always tell when an actor is into sports in real life and when he is indifferent.James Caan rang utterly false as a big-time college football coach. So, it wasn't a surprise when years later I heard him say that he wasn't really a sports fan.

That's why I never got into the tv show "Coach". Craig T. Nelson just never seemed authentic, and he made similar comments as Caan that he wasn't into sports.

Walter Matthau, Denzel Washington, and Gene Hackman are huge sports fans, and that's a big reason why their respective sports movies stand out so well.

Fantastic Mr. Fox

Took my nephew to see it. Definetly not a movie for kids. I thought it was terrific though. Some great lines. Felt like most Wes Anderson movies so you can imagine young kids not liking it. The diehards will love this movie and it plays to those who enjoyed BR, Rushmore and RT's way more then The Life Aquatic and Darjeling Limited. The latter two were just too mellow for me.

Loved the animation. Movie had a fresh look to it and plenty of laughs. It's not a long movie but it would have benefited from cutting out 5-10 minutes.

I don't think I saw more than ten minutes of "Coach," total. (When it comes to TV, with a few rare exceptions, I'm a drama fan.) You're right about him not being a football technician in ATRM, in that there wasn't a truckload of hardcore, "shark" content, but - - and I'm being serious here, no tool factor - - were there episodes of "Coach" devoted to his operational coaching tactics? I still think maybe you just didn't accept him as a comedic actor - - I for one can't really visualize him being sitcom-funny.

I think I have seen every episode of "Coach".In the non-football scenes he was quite funny.In the early years of the show Minnesota State was a doormat, and his character in his haplessness was authentic.But when the writers decided to make Minnesota State a powerhouse who won the National Championship, all of Craig T. Nelson's speeches just came off as incredibly weak, and unrealistic.

watched "venus" with peter o'toole last night. it's kind of a sad movie that touches on aging and the frailty that accompanies growing old. o'toole looks like he's on death's door but he still gives a nice performance here. it's a role perfectly tailored for him in this stage of his life and career.

watched the original "the thin man" yesterday with the wife. i find myself enjoying TCM a lot of late. william powell and myrna loy are superb as the tippling sleuths nick and nora charles. the script is tight and the two of them are very funny.

Few actors ever reached the coolness factor of William Powell. And surprisingly, most of the Thin Man sequels are as good as the first. VERY highly recommended. Now I need a martini. Come on, Asta.

Seven Pounds- One of the best movies I've seen in a long time. My wife hated it. I now hate my wife.

Duplicity

Clive Owen and Julia Roberts were both pretty painful to watch. Tom Wilkinson and Paul Giamatti both stole the show but received far too little screen time between the two. Could see the ending coming from a mile way.

Balls Out: Gary the Tennis Coach

I laughed. I get a kick out of Sean William Scott in general and this was no exception. Rude, crude, and some really bad acting at times. Reminded me of an "R" rated Happy Gilmore, only not quite as redeeming.
