I love King of New York. I liked Bad Lieutenant for the same reason I like David Lynch movies: Ferrara takes a lot of artistic risks.

Previews for this actually looked kind of cool, don't be fooled. Keitel mails it in, Gooding tries scowling the whole movie. Miguel Ferrer is Miguel Ferrer, which isn't much without a supporting cast. Plot is absurd, action is stupid, dialogue like it came from a 14 year old who drank a case of mountain dew and just watched Pulp Fiction for the first time.

Loved the new Star Trek! I was a big fan of the original series, watched a lot of Next Generation and very little of the other series. I don't think I've seen all the movies, but this was nearly perfect. Great storyline, awesome FX, great casting, lots of action and they hit on pretty much all the lines, catchphrases, and actions from the original series. Even my wife, who is no fan at all, liked it.

I liked Angels and Demons more than DaVinci Code but I also had the same opinion of the two books. I don't really like having read the book before seeing the movie though.

Sundance or IFC was playing Cassavetes movies pretty steadily for a bit there... caught A Woman Under the Influence which I remember being blown away by when I first caught it. Still pretty devasting- particularly the acting (Faulk and Rowlands are unbelievably good) but it was Cassavetes' matter of fact, part of the action, long-take, almost DOGMA style (naturalistic lighting and sound) direction that had me really impressed this time around. Seeing it again made me happy to have taken Rowland's performance in the GWD- watching her unravel... wow.

Agree 100% - pretty bad movie.Also last week I watched Sin Nombre. REALLY enjoyed this movie. Would recommend it to the foreign movie fans poking around in here. Looks like tomorrow I get Public Enemy, Harry Potter 6, and The Cove in the mail. I'll report back...

I appreciated that movie, but didn't like it - if that makes sense. The acting is so natural, it's almost like a documentary. But it didn't hold my attention.El Floppo said:

Makes sense.I think Cassavetes almost fetishized the long take in this one- made for a very fly-on-the-wall feel for the film, particulalry with the amazing acting performances and writing and frequent use of smaller spaces for location. But too often, scenes tended to linger past their usefulness while the camera takes everything in. Dramatically too, it gets exhausting being so up close and personal with the madness and poor decision-making of the characters. I still loved it.

The plot is a bit of a stretch and things are too easy with holes. The family and I have started walking up to the Family Video lately, to get exercise and my son can get anything he wants in their free kids' section. I have decided that I am going to stay away from their new releases around the outside of the wall and start picking stuff out in the middle of the store, older but stuff I have missed, which are either $1 for 5 nights or 2 for $1 for 5 nights.

Shoot Em Up - Five minutes into this, my first thought was "Does Paul Giamatti need a check this bad?" But by the time it was 20 minutes in, I was having a blast with this movie. It is completely a popcorn movie with almost no need for a plot, and no way half of the things they are doing could you really do. But it didn't matter, it was just fun to thick about it. It was a live action cartoon. Monica Bellucci is super hot as always. Great sex scene with her. The shooting tricks were clever, and the ones that were stupid (bullets between fingers going off in fireplace) at least made me laugh.

Rambo - While I could enjoy the mindless violence of Shoot Em Up, I couldn't here. Always been a fan of the franchise but once you start throwing babies into the fire I'm out. Lost interest at that point, turned it off when wife and kids got home, and never had the urge to put it back in. Sent it back when due without finishing it. Doubt I will ever get around to finishing it again.

Justice League: The New Frontier - The DC Universe of Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman and The Flash set in the 1950s. Was really fun, a bit over the top for my son, and worthy of its PG-13 rating. I am probably a bad dad for letting my son watch along.

Wow. One of the best movies I've seen this year. Incredible documentary, but please do not let that prevent you form watching. It had some very intense, suspenseful sequences that big-budget Hollywood wishes it could manufacture. Its definitely politically charged from the same type folk in Greenpeace and other activist, environmental orgs, but please do not let that prevent you form watching. The film takes the time to let you get to know the main characters and their motivations and to allow you to build an understanding of the subject (dolphins). Even with those two obstacles that will prevent it from ever gaining a wide audience, I defy anyone to watch it and remain unmoved. A great, moving film.

Public Enemies:
Can't put my finger on it, but I didn't love it like I thought I was going to. For lack of a better term, I just thought the movie lacked some 'pop'. Just seemed to coast it's way through the subject matter and I found myself growing bored about 90mins in. Part of the disappointment is that I am starting to rethink my assessment of C.Bale. About 5 years ago I thought he was one of the better actors in the business, but either I was wrong or he doesn't seem to take roles that show it any more. A lot of flat characters lately - Batman, Terminator, Public Enemies, etc.. Anyway, good but not great movie.
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince:
I am a nerd about the books, so keep that I mind. IMO the movies took a step backwards with this installment. The biggest problem? They don't seem to think kids will be able to handle 'adult' situations in the movies. The books got increasingly dark and grew with the kids - ie the situations became heavier and heavier as they grew up. The movies never seem to reflect this, and the makers seem to take no chances so they can keep their PG rating (to my knowledge, The Order of the Phoenix was the only PG-13 movie). Because of this the two main events in the book were glanced over: 1. The whole 'climax' of the movie 2. The love interests of the characters. To me these were the book and IMO were not relayed in the movie at all (my guess is because of the rating). Just don't know why they avoid the things in the movies that obviously the kids and fans can handle while reading the books. Still recommend the movie as it was good up until the last part. I still think the core 3 are my favorite movies of the bunch and would order them: Prisoner of Azkaban, Order of the Phoenix, Goblet of Fire.
The one thing I thought they've nailed was Luna Lovegood's character - one of my favorites in the books and movies.

Big Arnold fan but put this one off for quite some time, for good reason. There may have been a decent movie here once, but it was a movie about terrorist bombings released shortly after 9/11 so you have to wonder how much was cut and altered. The "Arnold gets washed down a river and waterfall" scene may have been the worst CGI scene ever filmed. The 3rd act really caught me by surprise and things get crazy. Worth watching, but not much worth remembering.

Assassination of Richard Nixon
Always assumed this was a political movie, it's not. Intense character study about a regular guy raging against the machine. Reminded me of Falling Down, but this was based on true events. I really enjoyed it. Naomi Watts does a stand up job as well, Don Cheadle isn't given a whole lot to do.

Normally a Jim Jarmusch fan, but this may have been one of the most boring films I've ever watched. Gerry was more exciting. Story is about a guy that goes around ordering dos expressos in separate cups and then is met by a stranger. The stranger asks if he speaks Spanish, he answers no, and then they exchange matchbooks and the stranger usually tells him a story in Spanish. Rinse, wash, repeat. Oh yeah, there's a naked chick too. Couple of well put together scenes, but Jarmusch is a master at that, final product is trash.

Beautiful Girls
Loved this movie. Michael Rapaport turns in an awesome supporting performance. Lot of truth to this movie about going home for and getting drunk for a couple weeks. Only bad part was having to see Rosie O'Donnell's face.

watched "the last king of scotland" the other night. forest whittaker does a very nice job as idi amin. maybe not oscar worthy but he's giving it a go. james macevoy is not terribly effective as the doctor. the script was pretty weak but it's still an interesting film.
last night i watched the short documentary on the mumbai attacks from last year called "terror in mumbai". the doc has really amazing access to the information connected with the event. they interview survivors. they interview the police and security teams. they even have phone recordings between attackers and their controller in pakistan! they even have footage of the surviving terrorist being interrogated from his hospital bed. it's kind of riveting. it is an HBO doc and *NOT* a CNN recap.

I was probably more angered than depressed. And I also felt hopeful that there are people willing to make such a commitment to expose what's going on. I know a lot of these type orgs have more than their share of loonies and sometimes cross boundaries we perceive as spectators. Agree 100%. Just watched this movie the other night as well. One of the more powerful documentaries that I've watched.To me the surfer guy's parts stood out to me. I think it's just because everybody else in the movie was sneaking in, putting up cameras, trying to free the dolphins, etc.. I liked his story about the dolphins and the shark, or how they surf along with them. Just came off as silly that they paddled out and held hands in the cove when everybody else in the doc was running around and risking jail time.I was probably more angered than depressed. Liked it. I can see where some wouldn't as the characters speak like they're in a noir movie when they're in high school.
But I like the snappy dialog. It reminded me of a mix between Miller's Crossing and Cruel Intentions (which was a modern remake of Dangerous Liasons).

Watched two action flicks this weekend:
Ninja Assassins
Fun martial arts film directed by the same guy that directed V For Vendetta. Very bloody, but entertaining. Kind of exactly what you'd hope for if you're in the mood for a movie like this. Good stuff.
The Incredible Hulk
The Edward Norton version. Wow, this was so much better than the Ang Lee version. Hulk fights giant rabbits? Oh no!!! Anyway, I liked it. The inside jokes were appreciated.
