The Tudors

We are about to finish season 2. Clearly, this is not up to par with the great HBO dramas (Sopranos, The Wire, Six Feet Under, and Deadwood). But we are enjoying this show for the most part.

Tudors definitely worth watching, especially the 1st season. Rhys-meyer's Henry VIII performance is unique for the pantheon, but the supporting characters make it.

Watched The Taking of Pelham 123 I'm a big fan of the original and this was ok. I don't think Travolta was right for the part. Maybe Viggo or Statham. I don't know. And something I always hate, if they're going to do a movie set in NYC get the scenes right. When they're racing the money through the city they clearly pass Grand Central Station and it takes them another 20 minutes to get there. Did they get lost? And when the train was supposed to be going to Coney Island it clearly was the 7 train going past Shea Stadium. Then at the end, maybe a spoiler.........................................................................

.Denzel keeps yelling "Hey!" to the cops running towards them on the bridge. Yes...they see you! Keep your eyes and the gun on Travolta.

Alright, it wasn't horrible but not anything I'd recommend. 2.5/5

went to the movies today and caught "sherlock holmes". it's really a lot of fun. it avoids the obligatory 1st movie syndrome where it's all backstory and exposition setting the groundwork for the sequel and beyond. ritchie does a smart thing and already assumes you know holmes. he's able to hit the ground running which makes for an entertaining movie. law and RDJr seem to enjoy themselves and exhibit some credible chemistry. mcadams? pretty thing and capable actress ("slings & arrows" made me a fan) but doesn't have a lot to do really. she seems miscast for the role.

Excellent review. I agree with most of that. Sidebar: movies are always better when the female actors can equal the male actors. A better actress would have improved that role. Someone like a young Cate Blanchett. Perhaps Mélanie Laurent (Inglorious Basterds) or Charlize Theron?

Revolutionary Road

Good movie with Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio. Not great, but definitely worth seeing. Difficult movie to watch, so don't rent this if you are looking for something light.
I just saw this over the weekend. The acting performances were great, as can be expected.

I think if I had seen the movie before watching "Mad Men" I would have appreciated the setting a bit more. "Mad Men" feels so authentic, and so correct, that "Revolutionary Road" seemed almost cartoonish in comparison.

Also, the metaphor of the "crazy person" being the only one who is living a "true", "meaningful existence" was way heavy handed.

Perfect Getaway

Good recommendation to turn the brain off for a couple hours and enjoy. Good at creating suspense, but the resolution was rather obvious right away. Especially given the way they talk about screenwriting tricks throughout the movie in conversation. Intensity turns up for the third act, but I feel that it could have went a little further. I watched the unrated DVD version, not sure how much was added or changed from the theatrical cut.

Quite possibly the best animation I've witnessed yet. That said the story was totally bizarro and seemed to pass right over me rather than draw me in. Visuals were outstanding but I had no emotional attachment at all to the characters. Lots of voice talents wasted here, I was too busy looking at it to even recognize all the famous voices behind the characters.

2.5/5 (But I hope to see more of this type of animation and less of the anime style going forward)

We watched this last night and I pretty much agree. It was great to look at but there should have been more put into the characters. And it had a Final Fantasy: Spirits Within feel to it with the weird storyline.

But overall, I give it a 7.5/10 for the excellent animation and some exciting action sequences.

I watched The Vistor last night. Richard Jenkins did a great job and you can see why he got an Oscar nominaton for the role. Really, really good film. :boxing:

The Time Traveler's Wife -- 7.5/10. I liked it. It kinda had a Benjamin Button feel to it, but I think it was a better movie.

I mostly agree, though I am still glad I saw the movie.

Saw Up last night. One of the best movies I've seen in a long time. The graphics and animation were the best I've ever seen. Came the closest I have to  since I was a little boy in a couple of spots. Sad I waited this long to see it.

Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist... thought this one was going to be more adult themed. Other than being set for the most part in my neighborhood, there was next to nothing going in this thing for me.

The writing wasn't as clever as intended. The characters were unlikable- and despite the story-line hammering at the audience that the title two should be together, there was nothing in the movie showing that they should. The characters were supposed to be HS seniors (I think), but come off as written by 30 somethings for 20 somethings characters.

Michael Cera (?), the cat from Juno, ... replayed the cat from Juno. Likeable and all, but is there more to this kid than that? Maybe there doesn't have to be. The Norah actress had nice cans and was yet another hottish girl that we're somehow supposed to think is an unattractive loser.
Me and the fiancee watched this the other night too. She said "Am I just getting old, but where are these kids parents? They just run around New York all night?" We did laugh at two parts, though:mytagid = Math.floor( Math.random() * 100 );document.write("

1) When the gay Asian kid driving the van almost exited to New Jersey and freaked out.

2) When the gay kid with the ridiculous name headbutted the girl's boyfriend and then bust out crying.*** SPOILER ALERT! Click this link to display the potential spoiler text in this box. ***");document.close();

Other than that, meh.

Public Enemies - pretty disappointing. not terrible, Depp was good enough, but there was nothing exceptional about it at all. everything seemed forced, especially the drama. it takes more than dark lighting and ominous music to create drama. zero chemistry between any of the roles. how about just one scene telling us something about the guys that Purvis brought him for his squad? too bad really. this was a cool story that could have been done a lot better.

Dammit. I was looking forward to that movie. Not sure if I've read a single positive review, though.

watched woody allen's "crimes & misdemeanors" on hbo the other day. it's the last of his great run of films in the 80's. he's got a great cast assembled here - again - with martin landau, anjelica huston, alan alda, jerry orbach, and mia farrow. it's got a thoughtful, interesting plot that i appreciated. this is woody allen at the top of his game. i think he was hit or miss for much of the 90's with outstanding films like "bullets over broadway" mingling with clunkers like "Celebrity". i know i am in the minority here in the FFA but Allen's body of work is *really* impressive...

Seen a few things over the holidays. Initially, got rewatch all the Bourne movies for the umteenth time on each. The first was excellent, the second may have been even better to me. The third was very entertaining though it did feel like it was put together way too fast and while I appreciated the connection to 2 in it it just felt a little forced. Having said that this is one of the more entertaining action trilogies I an think of and I really enjoy the character so hopefully they make another one or two. And yes, I know the books are different.

Eagle Eye - I expected this to suck. It didn't. But I wouldn't go out of my way to watch it again. I'm rather tired of the whole - the technology we make to protect us is going to take over and kill a lot of people - story line. Terminator pretty much got that done already. And while this was, in a way, a little more realistic in setting - the "bad guy" was briefly entertaining but then it was just comical.

Jumper - I didn't hate it. I think I'm starting to enjoy more mindless entertainment in the movie settings because if it's too close to reality then whats the point? It was an interesting idea for a movie but the acting could have been a ton better, SLJ was cool as usual, but overall, meh. Good mindless fun if nothing else is on I guess.

Revolutionary Road - it seems I will get hit for this, but I really did not like this movie. It reminded me a lot of Ameircan Beauty. Great acting, for sure. Writing well, of course. But in the end it just doesn't do it for me. I found myself rather happy at the ending, didn't much care for how they set up the affairs, and in the end there really wasn't one likeable character. Again, though. I think I'm just tired of having to think with movies. I want to be left alone for two hours eat some popcorn and just relax and have fun.

Babylon A.D. - I have no idea what happened in this movie. Didn't get any of the characters. Didn't even really understand the setting (I guess Russia got nuked somehow?) But, in keeping with my theme - didn't really care in the end. Vin kicked butt, the nun was cool for her brief time in action sequence and things blew up. Wouldn't pay to see it but I'd catch it again if there was nothing else on.

Slumdog Millionaire - My favorite part was when he screwed the game show host. Other than that I wanted to like it since it got such love but between the scenes that were not entertaining at all and the fact that I just really didn't care for the story, the setting or the characters, again I think it just wanted me to think too much and I'm just not there anymore in movies.

I've become the person I always hated when it came to opinions on movies, but such is life.

Much like American Gangster, its watchable, but should have been a lot better than it was.

It's not terrible and probably still better than a lot of options out there. I think a lot of people had high hopes for this one and it didn't live up to them. To me it just felt like Mann repeated the first 45mins three more times and called it good.

I figured. I'll definitely catch it on DVD some day.

Hmmmm. You'd think that the guy that directed Heat could have made a better heist movie.

500 Days of Summer

Arguably one of the best films released in 2009, but boy did I want to smash her head in. Great film and very funny at times but it will bring up bad memories of failed relationships. Kind of like a Say Anything for a new generation.

4.5/5

After Dark My Sweet

Recommended by Jdoggydogg. Solid noir. Love the idea of a main character with a history of mental illness. Not a lot of action, but a very engaging thriller.

Seemed like his goal here was to play around with digital video rather than making a great heist movie. Kind of like Rodriguez when he made Once Upon a Time in Mexico.

I'm glad you liked it. I need to see it again. If you like the genre and haven't see it, The Last Seduction is cool.

Added. Pretty sure I saw it a long time ago, but I don't remember a thing about it. Thanks!

That's disappointing. The Insider is Mann's last great movie, and that was 10 years ago. Ali and Collateral were ok. Miami Vice was awful. I love Manhunter, Heat, and The Insider. But Mann is really slipping as a director.

Ok just saw:

Star Trek on BD - Loved it....outstanding and the best BD I have seen yet. My wife who only likes Wrath of Khan...loved this movie....can;t say enough about it and look forward to the sequels.

Terminator Salvation on BD - meh.....I gotta say a lot of holes in the story, and WTF. I thought the resistance was going tobe a lot more rag tag and low on the tech.....they were friggin loaded with arsenal and air support. The movie was good justnot what I expected and I thought the story was a little weak. Christian Bale was pretty stiff too.

The Happening - Saw this on Showtime.....I actually thought it was a pretty good apocalyptic movie and found Mark Wahlberg acting amusing in a twisted kind of way. He was playing a geek basically..a real science nerd and he is traditionaly a bad ### type....Most of M. Knights stuff has been crap since his debut with The Sixth Sense but this was a decent movie.

Agree with all of this, I need to watch Insider again. I think we've been over this before but Manhunter is criminally under appreciated in its genre.

Seriously, that's the first time I've ever seen anyone say that it was anything better than awful."Comically bad" might have been the best review I'd seen until Todem's.

The Insider is so good. If you compare Crowe in Gladiator and Crowe in The Insider, I think it's reasonable to argue that he's a great actor. Those roles are so very different. Manhunter is awesome. Yes, it has that cheesy 80s disco that will only worsen as the years pass. But the movie is still excellent.

Based on a book by the great Jim Thompson, arguably the best noir writer everAlso wrote The Grifters and The Getaway, but his best is a book called The Killer Insider Me

Up In The Air

The reviews of this drive me crazy. I thought it was awful. I wanted to like it too. Thank You for Smoking was good and Juno was great. I'm on board.

The reviews of this strike me as elitists. Kind of like a movie for first class world travelers. Just bits about rental cars, hotels and luggage. Lots of filler in this movie. All the potential potential great scenes fizzled. Clooney's backpack speech, his talk with Kenny Powers. Nothing materialized. Very dissappointing. Vera's butt was nice though.

Dream Lover

Silly thriller with James Spader and Mädchen Amick. There are only two reasons to watch this movie:

1. Mädchen Amick is incredibly beautiful, and she is nude in this movie.

2. James Spader is a fun actor. He doesn't have a lot of range. But ever since Sex, Lies, and Videotape, Spader is an actor that I always enjoy seeing in movies.

of the three major "Twin Peaks" sirens, Amick was the one for me.ETA - i would likely take peggy lipton over any of them.

Love the Insider, Love Manhunter...I remember seeing that in the theatre. Of course nothing needs to be said about Gladiator...maybe one of the 5 best movies I have ever seen.
