Silly thriller with James Spader and Mädchen Amick. There are only two reasons to watch this movie:

1. Mädchen Amick is incredibly beautiful, and she is nude in this movie.

2. James Spader is a fun actor. He doesn't have a lot of range. But ever since Sex, Lies, and Videotape, Spader is an actor that I always enjoy seeing in movies.
of the three major "Twin Peaks" sirens, Amick was the one for me.ETA - i would likely take peggy lipton over any of them.
Lipton is lovely. But I want to have Amick's baby.

Shelly Johnson is bucky naked, you say?:addstoqueue:

I only need it for about 5 minutes.

Love the Insider, Love Manhunter...I remember seeing that in the theatre. Of course nothing needs to be said about Gladiator...maybe one of the 5 best movies I have ever seen.
Some people hate Gladiator. I love it.
:lmao:
Definitely don't hate it. Definitely don't understand why it was a Best Picture winner. Awesome action movie, but it made about as much sense as Denzel Washington for Best Supporting Actor in Training DAy.

I don't have a list here, but I am certain there are much worse examples than Denzel in Training Day.

After Hours(1985) - lol. gem, 5/5.
the scorsese one, right? if so then it is one of my favorite films. it's so out of character for scorsese almost but it is funny. it's this great slice of new york life.
One of my favorites. I still have a VHS copy as well as a DVD
one of my favorite lines is this little exchange towards the end...
Pepe: Art sure is ugly.

Neil: Shows how much you know about art. The uglier the art, the more it's worth.

Pepe: This must be worth a fortune, man.
it's one of the films that i find myself identifying with to a sometimes uncomfortable degree.

Angels and Demons - why do they feel the need to try and cram an entire 800 page book into 2 hours and 20 minutes? Good grief. Better than The Da Vinci Code, but that's not saying much. Tom Hanks is still miscast in that role, and the dialogue stunk. Some cool night shots of Rome kept it at least watchable. 4/10

Oldboy - 8.5/10

Like Ebert says, they can't make movies like this in Hollywood - which is too bad. I shied away from this movie because I'd heard how violent it was. But that's the difference between American and Foreign films; the violence in Foreign films serves the story where in American films it's just pornographic.

This is an excellent story of revenge and the blackness of the human heart.

superb. And that ending is another thing a typical American audience isn't going for.

Great movie draft is making me watch a bunch of movies I haven't seen in awhile. Tonight I watched one I mentioned as not getting drafted (but considering the low score my horror pick got, maybe I should have).

Ringu - 7.5/10

The film responsible for the recent wave of Japanese / Asian horror remakes (this was remade as "The Ring"). The film is exceptionally creepy, with a great ending. I also like the hopelessness it conveys: you are cursed by the (very evil and twisted) spirit, you can't win, go ahead - find the body and give it a proper burial... it won't matter. I'd rate it higher, but it's starting to seem a bit dated because of the technology that's important to the film (a videotape). Plus, there have been a slew of "long-haired female ghost" stories since.

I think this came out when I moved to NYC- as an indy college snob, they made you watch it to gain admission to the city. I love it. In a weird way, I might even prefer The King of Comedy, Scorcese's other NYC comedy. Rupert Pupkin ... :goodposting: And Jerry Lewis is freaking brilliant in it.

I'm not into these kinds of movies anymore. But it's very well done.

Irreversible

Yuck. What depravity. When this movie isn't showing violence, homophobia, and misogyny, it's just boring. Ebert & Roeper gave this two thumbs up, and I am at a loss when I try to understand why. We have a high concept (reversed story), a director with an eye for fancy camera work, and decent acting. But all that's meaningless with a story that is nothing short of disgusting. I hate this movie.

Oh, and did I mention the 10 minute rape scene? How about a guy's face being crushed several times with a fire extinguisher?

I need to watch 10 Pixar movies in a row just to cleanse my palate.

I was only aware of the 10 minute rape scene, but this is one I have always refused to watch as a human being.

Good choice. The world would be a better place if every copy of this movie was destroyed.

I tried to search through this thread so I am not sure if somebody has mentioned Peter Jackson's "Braindead or in America called Dead Alive"

This is the splatter movie to end all splatter movies. I liked it better than "Army of Darkness".

The blood and gore are so over the top, it is hilarious. Jackson is very creative how he kills the humans or how the zombies get it.

"I kicked #### for the lord!"

Good stuff. Gotta love any movie with a killer monkey.

Very Bad Things is a really messed up movie. i can't decide if i like it or not.
:lmao: I put it in the Disturbing and Dark category. It makes me cringe, but I've watched it again when it was on. I like that song that plays when the stripper initially comes in.

I am not going to hijack the great movie draft thread with more about this one, so I'll continue here. Actually watched a movie with my wife (probably been over a year since we've done this). I was flipping through crap during the football game last night and she saw that Into the Wild was on soon and said that somebody at work suggested it, so I watched it again with her.

Now that it's fresh in my mind I really don't see how people think that the kid was spoiled. There is a bit in the movie that focused on his parents and the hurt that they caused - fighting, abusive father (if not towards them, he at least was towards his mother). On top of that he finds out at the end of HS that he and his sister were basically ******* kids since his father was married at the time he met their mother etc. I think he incorporated their lies and misery to being completely focused on possessions, image, their company and had little love to give to their children. Granted, he took it to the extreme but I can't fault the kid for wanting to break away from that life when the opportunity presented itself.

The other point that people kept bringing up was they thought the movie glorified him and what he did. My wife and I took the opposite from it. At the the end you see him realize what he did was wrong and even writes "happiness is best shared". I don't think this applied to his parents, but more to the other people that he came in contact with and touched - mainly the hippie couple and the old man he meets at the end. But it did show him in a sequence with his parents at the end and he was seemingly softening his stance on them throughout the movie so I think that was also a part of it. The movie shows him dying sad and alone. I think the movie came off as presenting his pursuit of finding himself and hitting the road a noble one, but didn't shy away from showing his loneliness or the wake of sadness he left behind.

I know people have a problem with him not researching how to survive more. He did some preparation, but should've done more. That's 100% true and it led to his death. I can't remember exactly how long he planned to go out there, but I think he did enough to get him through several weeks and besides having a couple roadblocks, he managed to get through relatively fine up until his exit. He was ready to leave and wanted to, but made a critical error with the river. Not an explorer myself, so not sure where he would get info about when the river would flood, how deep and fast it got, etc...

Still one of my favorite movies of the 00s.

Great post KP - my sentiments exactly. If I remember correctly, at the end, he tried to leave, but the river was too high to cross. That's when he got screwed survival wise.

Sigh. He was an idiot. He didn't get "screwed survival wise", he put himself in a position to die. ON PURPOSE. And then he did. With ranger cabins stocked with supplies within a few miles. IDIOT. Might as well have jumped off a cliff or put a gun in his mouth. It clouded my view of the movie, which was beautifully shot. I kind of despise the author of the book too, Krakauer. If you really read Into Thin Air, you get an impression of what a #### he is. He played this story for more than it was worth.

Awesome movie that doesn't get as much love as it should. Wished I had room for it in the Great Movie Draft. Better than a good deal of the comedies picked.

Recently watched....

Julie and Julia - It was entertaining for 2 hours and that's all i really expected. My wife, who loves to cook, loved it.

Harry Potter and the half Blood Prince - Not as good as the first two three films but much better then the last two. The finale should be fun.

The Hangover - loved it. Not as funny to me as some other recent comedies and I may have been expecting a little much since lots of people around me said it was the best comedy in ages, but it was still very entertaining.

I have Extract out on rental but haven't watched it and probably won't get the chance. Is it good?

I am just fascinated by reactions like this. He was young. I am sure that a lot of us have put ourselves into a position to die on purpose. Young people do ill-advised things all the time and for a less noble cause than trying to find themselves. I don't remember the book as well, but I thought that he took off to find something else but went in the wrong direction and while the shacks might've had some supplies it wouldn't have helped him that much. Yes, the river was the downfall. Again, not sure where/how he would've gotten that info. Up to that point he had done what he set out to do and was heading home - he survived (can't remember how long he was there - maybe a month?). He was prepared and smart enough to last longer than 80% of us could have. What he tried to do was dangerous, but he wasn't trying to commit suicide. To say that he might as well have jumped off a cliff is just silly. To me this is no different than somebody jumping out of a plane, rock climbing, etc... you are willingly putting yourself in a position to die and sometimes things don't go in your favor.

This is an excellent review. People that rip this kid for being stupid and spoiled are missing the point. We need to remember what it was like being 20. You just aren't that mature yet. And the spoiled comment makes absolutely no sense. A spoiled kid would have gone to the ivy league college and treated people like ####. He wasn't spoiled. He had a sort of Buddhist revelation that material goods were worthless.

I don't think Judge will ever make another comedy as funny as Office Space. But Extract is worth watching. There aren't a lot of laugh out loud moments. But the movie is entertaining.

I'm thinking that almost everyone in the world (especially young men) has put themselves in a position of danger when they were young. So if you are one of those countless millions that did something stupid when you were young, then why are you judging this kid for the same behavior?

watched "he's just not that into you" last night with the wife. pretty ho-hum kind of film that would be pretty forgettable but for the fact that it has a slew of hollywood folks in it. anniston, connolly, johanson, barrymore and one of the wives from "big love". on the ther side of the gender divide you have bradley cooper, ben affleck, the young dude from the Mac commercials, and one of the toady guys from "entourage".

it's not really funny or insightful as relationship films go. it does make a city like baltimore look fun and pretty. oh, scarlett is silly hot in this. jennifer connolly is also pretty damn hot. she totally kills me.
Watched that as well a few nights ago on HBO.....my wife and I actually enjoyed it and I thought Scarlett was super hot too. The girl chasing the Apple guy was hot in a very cute girl next door kind of way. But overall it was a decent chick flick.
I thought this movie was much better then what most are giving it credit for...i think it takes on a really important subject... that when a guy mistreats... or does something... or says something mean to a woman... they usually think the guy likes her... and this whole myth was started when kids were in gradeschool. i think women often hold on to sucky relationships even when the guy treats them like an ####### just because they have this belief that guys treat them bad because they like them... women need to know this is not true and need to stop holding on to that notion. i think that belief is very common...

I thought this movie tackled that subject well... and kind of pointed out how women falsly read into a lot of things guys do in relationships. yes... it was essentially a 'chick flick' and the apple dude did get together with the chick at the end... but if i recall... johansen didn't get together with the guy that liked her in the end... so it wasn't all lovey dovey...

if your girlfriend wants to watch a 'chick flick' pick this one... unless you're the dude that treats her like crap and keeps her holding on. i don't know... i guess i just see this as a chick flick... with a very important message for chicks... that when a guy treats you like crap... its actually because he doesn't like you that much... not because he loves you... sounds obvious... but it is not obvious at all to most women...

i watched Funny People a few weeks ago and thought it was one of the best films i had seen all year... the message i took from it was kind of a... life is short... enjoy it while you can... things don't usually work out the way you want... but that doesn't mean you can't enjoy life... let go of regrets... blah blah blah...

i know all those messages i wrote sound very cliche... but the movie was done well... and i thought it was good that it wasn't one of those where "everything worked out in the end". Things didn't all work out in the end... but even though they didn't... the film ended with what i interpreted as a positive outlook... instead of a doom and gloom feel...

it had a lot of funny moments as well... and it kind of turned the mirror on hollywood people... showing them to be very shallow...

hated it.One of the worst endings I've ever seen. Muddled doesn't even begin to describe it.

Stayed up really late last night and watched "Marathon Man" last night on HBO. HOLY CRAP, am I glad I did. What a freaking movie! I cannot believe I missed this prior. Watching this made me realize that I need to start looking backwards, not forwards for great movies. There's so much I must have missed if I missed this.

Seriously, Marathon Man was a treat to watch. 4.5/5
