I didn't think this was a bad movie but I also didn't think there was that much to it. I might need to watch it again.
SLC Punk and Glory Daze turned me from wrangler wearing farm boy to a green haired semi-pro skate punk in my early teens.Of course now I've regressed to a tie wearing, clean cut, insurance man. But it is fun to reminisce.

Glory Daze featured a putrid Ben Affleck, a great Sam Rockwell, and the best post-hardcore, pre-emo, punk soundtrack to date.

Sad days watching all my skater friends go the way of the hippy our Junior and Senior years of high school. I didn't quit rocking my NOFX T-shirts and Zero jeans until I hit college.
Whoa...take it easy, Sid.

Probably isn't much to it if you didn't experience it in your coming of age time period of life. I don't revisit it often.Didn't have much of an ending.Glad to see Jason Segal get a recent resurgence after his portrayal of straight edge Mike. Always good to see Mark (Til Schweiger) pop up in a film every now and again. He was one of the Basterds in IB if I remember right.

I don't know exactly why I love SLC Punk, but I just do. I think it's hilarious, and I really like the characters, dialogue, etc. I've watched it probably a dozen times or so, but don't even own it.

:sarcasm: Lame I know, but I just never got into the hardcore stuff. I was pretty good at two things, skating and making a fool of myself in front of security guards/mall cops.

Actually was featured in a few clips from some 99/00 Black Label skate videos. I wasn't a very good competition skater, but street skating was just gaining steam at that time.

I have about 40 boards in my basement and boxes of other assorted junk I collected at the time. Haven't been on a skateboard in at least 6 years.

ETA: If I would have hung out with the idiots and d-bags instead of the guys I thought were cool, probably a good chance I'd be a millionaire right now. :bag:

Another problem with listing everything is that it would take a day or two to make up the list and I just do not have the time. Maybe I could do a row at a time. Or HDDVD only, or the 100 DVDs I'd save in case of a fire...
Where's your dedication, man?! :sarcasm:

Making my list last night reminded me that some ####### out there has my Snatch, Memento, Rounders, SLC Punk, and Red Dragon dvds!
Ironically I realized earlier today that I did not see my Memento DVD when I look thru yesterday either :lmao:  Im sure theres a few more that are POW's

Big fan of this movie. Havent seen this movie in a long time, but as soon as I saw him in Inglourious Basterds and knew it was the crazy russian from SLC Punk

So I was at this test taking workshop thing for a class this morning-afternoon, and it was hilarious. Totally reminded me of the Brian Cox screenwriting seminar from Adaptation. .

Im talking to a friend afterwards who I learn never saw it, and I tell him its a must see and might be in my Top 10 for the 2000's. And then I say the fact that it includes a naked Merryl Streep snorting basically the equivalent of heroin pretty much seals the deal that its great.

His response: Isnt she old? :headbang:

...now is it just me, or do other people think it was totally hilarious this movie has Streep letting her T's out and snorting drugs? Penelope Cruz does roles like this, Streep does Mamma Mia and Julie & Julia

Always fun when an established actor is willing to step out of their comfort zone.First one that comes to mind is obviously Travolta in Pulp Fiction.Betty White in Lake Placid swearing like a sailor.George Clooney in From Dusk Till Dawn.that's all I can think of off the top of my head, I'm sure a few more will come to mind.

Notorious-Directed by Alfred Hitchcock. Ingrid Bergman plays the daughter of a a convicted Nazi spy and goes undercover, recruited by agent played by Cary Grant. More of a love story than a nazi caper, but still entertained.

I'd list my DVD collection, but it would be an embarassment. I probably have 1500 or more, but I usually do not buy a DVD with the intention of watching it multiple times. At least half of my collection was purchased for $4 or less - for the purpose of having fresh, new (to me) films to watch at my leisure. And since I pay roughly the equivalent as I would for a rental. And there is also the HD-DVD section. When they lost out to BluRay, I loaded up with about the entire catalog at around $3-4 each.Lots of classics and lots of clunkers. For example, I just saw "The Amateurs" last night on HD-DVD. Horrible. But I had never seen it and buying the HD was as cheap as renting the regular. Both I would consider a waste of time.I really recommend gohastings.com as a resource for used DVD. You can find all kinds of great ones and tons of ones you have never seen, but may be curious about. And I usually end up paying around $3 each including shipping.Another thing I like about getting them so cheap, is that I freely give them away after viewing to a friend who I think may enjoy it.Another problem with listing everything is that it would take a day or two to make up the list and I just do not have the time. Maybe I could do a row at a time. Or HDDVD only, or the 100 DVDs I'd save in case of a fire...
i haven't counted lately, it is probably more than a 100 (few?)... but enough i'm not enthused about exhaustively catloging all of them... i'll try & do some more specific sub lists (criterion), or genre lists... i was thinking about doing a favorites list along those lines anways, so this could be a good vehicle for that purpose...criterionkurosawa - seven samurai, rashomon, yojimbo/sanjuro, hidden fortress, ran, kagemusha (blu-ray)powell & pressburger - black narcissus, red shoes, thief of bagdad, tales of hoffman, colonel blimp, i know where i'm going, peeping tom tati - mr. hulot's holiday, mon oncle, trafic, play time (blu-ray) wenders - wings of desire & paris, texas (both blu-ray) bergman - wild strawberries, seventh seal (blu-ray)fellini - amarcord, 8 1/2 (blu-ray)welles - mr arkadin, F for fakecronenberg - videodrome, naked lunchlang - Mreed - third manhitchcock - notoriousbunuel - discrete charm of the bourgeoisietarkovsky - solarisgilliam - time banditsroeg - man who fell to earth some favorite genres (sci-fi & noir), to be cont.

Agree on almost all your underrated picks, especially these three. Dead Calm is just about a perfect thriller. And damn, that ending. I saw Calm in the theater, and the audience erupted at that finale in a way I've never heard since. I liked October Sky a lot. Hard to find a good family film. I can't say enough good things about Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.

I'll admit I have a HUGE soft spot for one man revenge thrillers. Man on Fire, Taken, and A Man Apart are the best examples of recent ones, but I could never get enough of them. This one wasn't on the same level as those three, but pretty damn cool. Only thing holding it back is just how over the top ridiculous it gets by the end. Film didn't seem committed to making Butler out to be the bad guy, I had a hard time not rooting for him the whole film despite just how misguided his agenda became. Foxx turns in a pretty forgettable performance. All in all, still a pretty sweet movie.

Spy Game --> UnderratedBefore the Devil Knows You're Dead
I think Before the Devils Knows Your Dead if 1 of the most underrated movies of last decade, but that's just me. I was recommending it to my one friend who is almost as into movies as me constantly, and he finally watched it this week. He also thought it was great and agreed maybe PSH's best role.Spy Game I couldnt stand, but I agree with your other underrateds, or at least the ones Ive seenQuite the collection!

nice read, although it made me kind of angry reading it. Shutter Island could miss, but Im still excited to see it and think it will at least be good (although I have this hunch the trailer gives too much away, but I trust in Scorsese not to do that).I dont know how he was left off those lists they mention. The Departed was in all likelihood my favorite film from last decade, and Gangs of New York I thought was great as well. Tarantino ripping on him is almost laughable, but I guess he thinks since he made his first very good movie in 12 years he feels a little better about himself.

i don't think very highly of his work from the mid-90's and beyond. his 80s work through early 90s - "raging bull" through "age of innocence" really - was his best, most interesting period, imo.

I couldn't stand Spy Game either, but I haven't seen it since theaters. Last Castle is the only movie I enjoyed Robert Redford in since 1980. And yes, that includes The Natural.
The Clearing and Lions for Lambs was decent. Outside of those and Last Castle, Id agree

I sure do want to see this.
peter lorre's best work as an actor. he owns that role.
I do a pretty good Peter Lorre impression. I used to work with an engineer named Rick, and I'd always quote Lorre from The Maltese Falcon: "You hate me, don't you Rick?" He was not amused.
his role in M is quite removed from everything he did in hollywood.
I'm sure it is. The film looks great and I've been meaning to see it for years.

Excellent movie. Pretty much fits into the film noir genre - and I love those kinds of movies.

The article is well-written - though mostly pointless. Every artist has a critical period of creativity where their work will never be better. Scorsese probably won't make another Goodfellas. Tarantino won't make another Pulp Fiction. But to point this out is pretty much meaningless.

Last Castle is just a fun movie all around. And let's face it, without Redford and Gandolfini, that could have been a mediocre movie. But I liked it a lot with these two starring.

I should watch it again. When I saw it for the first time it was painful watching Gandolfini trying not to be Tony Soprano.

It was as if he took everyone of Tony's characteristics and flipped them upside down.

Watching Gandolfini in Get Shorty and The Mexican, it seems like he's a very capable actor with decent range. But yeah, I'm sure it'd be hard to play another character after that much exposure.

Shutter Island

(Might as well post my reivew in this thread, as well)

Yikes. Trying to think of something eloquent to say about this movie, but I'm having a hard time. This movie is ####ed up. Shutter Island is a hybrid. On one hand, it's a tribute to 1940s film noir. On the other hand, it's a horrifying thriller.

I believe that many people will figure out this movie almost instantly. There are several clues - some not very subtle. So the question is: is Scorese even trying to hide anything from the viewer? Or is he taking you on a ride?

I read an article this week stating that Scorsese has lost his relevance - that he's not the brilliant artist we all know from Goodfellas and Raging Bull. Well, I'm not saying that this movie instantly elevates Scorsese back to his former glory. But I do have to give him credit. I have seen enough horror films and thrillers to be jaded at this point. Gore has replaced real scares. But Scorsese really managed to creep me out with Shutter Island.

I watched whatever netflix sent me. If it wasn't the director's cut, a few more minutes of gore and this film wouldn't be far from the Saw series.

Rashomon

The film is extremely well made in addition to being a powerful and provocative experience. Kurosawa's direction is great as usual. He was one of the few masters of cinema who could fashion a truly entertaining film. Unlike many other regarded masterpieces of world cinema, his films are never dull and can be enjoyed even by the casual viewer in addition to the film buff. The acting is very good (espescially by Toshiro Mifune who displays the charisma that would come to fruition in Kurosawa's later samurai epics), but the film is more about the plot and direction than the performances. "Rashomon" is an amazing film that simply gets better and better with each viewing.

I can't remember the last movie that has gotten this much promotion on TV.
The Hangover got more promotion than any movie, ever. I saw so many ads for it, it took me a month or so to actually want to go to the theater to see it

Law Abiding Citizen

3.5/5
Did you watch the Director's cut by director F. Gary Grey? Just wondering. That commercial is so stupid. Who the hell's ever heard of F. Gary Grey?
 He was a big time music video director until he did movies which include:Friday (1995)

Set It Off (1996)

The Negotiator (1998)

The Italian Job (2003)

A Man Apart (2003)

Be Cool (2005)

Law Abiding Citizen (2009)

The Brazilian Job (TBA)
Like I said, who the hell is F. Gary Grey? :lmao:
Theres some pretty good movies and that group
I've only seen The Italian Job and Friday, and I think those movies are awful.
