Friday was gut-busting, laugh out loud, beer thru the nose, laugh-til-it-hurts funny. And that's a fact!

"I know you don't smoke weed, I know this; but I'm gonna get you high today, 'cause it's Friday; you ain't got no job... and you ain't got #### to do. !" :bag: :homer:

RashomonThe film is extremely well made in addition to being a powerful and provocative experience. Kurosawa's direction is great as usual. He was one of the few masters of cinema who could fashion a truly entertaining film. Unlike many other regarded masterpieces of world cinema, his films are never dull and can be enjoyed even by the casual viewer in addition to the film buff. The acting is very good (espescially by Toshiro Mifune who displays the charisma that would come to fruition in Kurosawa's later samurai epics), but the film is more about the plot and direction than the performances. "Rashomon" is an amazing film that simply gets better and better with each viewing.
rashomon is imo without a doubt, one of the greatest movies ever made. structurally pioneering. completely agree it holds up and if anything appreciation is enhanced with multiple viewings... definitely in my top 10, maybe top 5... (also seven samurai)...

Edge of Darkness - good, never approached great, but definitely a film that was worth watching. Not as good as Taken or Man on Fire, but up there as far as the "revenge" factor goes. 3/5 for the genre.

"Call me Ishmael,"

What an opening. It pulls you in and then, when it's over, you look back and realize what a time you had thanks to the invite.

Friday is a great comedy finely rendered and if you can't see it, welp, too bad for you.

I don't think Smokey wanted to go in there, but peer pressure's a mother####er.

Shutter Island

(Might as well post my reivew in this thread, as well)

Yikes. Trying to think of something eloquent to say about this movie, but I'm having a hard time. This movie is ####ed up. Shutter Island is a hybrid. On one hand, it's a tribute to 1940s film noir. On the other hand, it's a horrifying thriller.

I believe that many people will figure out this movie almost instantly. There are several clues - some not very subtle. So the question is: is Scorese even trying to hide anything from the viewer? Or is he taking you on a ride?
Yeah, this was one of those movies where my wife and l looked at each other very early in the film and gave each other a knowing nod.Biggest shock of that movie came beforehand with the preview of "The Runaways" with Dakota Fanning as Cherie Currie.

Another vote in the Jdog is utterly, completely and wholly wrong about Friday.

"Hey everybody, Smokey's taking a ####. Okay I ain't gonna tell no one else."

Dude. Just stop. You're 100% wrong. You've done good work in this thread, but this is making people think less of your opinion. Maybe you don't care, but deep down inside I think you do a little bit.
No, I'm not wrong, and neither are you. These are matters of opinion.I don't care what you think about my opinion. I'm not looking for you to validate my thoughts. I'll guess that all of us disagree of many movies. That's natural.

Law Abiding Citizen

I'll admit I have a HUGE soft spot for one man revenge thrillers. Man on Fire, Taken, and A Man Apart are the best examples of recent ones, but I could never get enough of them. This one wasn't on the same level as those three, but pretty damn cool. Only thing holding it back is just how over the top ridiculous it gets by the end. Film didn't seem committed to making Butler out to be the bad guy, I had a hard time not rooting for him the whole film despite just how misguided his agenda became. Foxx turns in a pretty forgettable performance. All in all, still a pretty sweet movie.

3.5/5
i really enjoyed this movie

another vote from me too... Friday was awesome...

My wife rented Paranormal Activity. For some reason, I thought it was a movie about some psychologist interviewing people who had paranormal experiences. I guess the movie I was thinking of has a Four in the title.

Anyway, so needless to say, I had no idea what to expect from Paranormal Activity other than the obivious (i.e. ghosts). I don't usually get sucked into a movie, but that movie had me going pretty good. I would recommend it.

Still gonna beat Avatar to a pulp when it comes to awards. :IBTL:
Really? Doesn't seem like best picture material. Although it looks like Bigelow will win for best director.
More so than the last couple of years, it really seems like it was a weak year for movies. I can't think of any movies that are There Will be Blood/No Country for Old Men quality. Seems like the academy extended the Best Picture to 10 just for a movie like Avatar. They need that to win to get people to watch the damn thing every year (esp after all the #####ing that Dark Knight wasn't nominated last year)

Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay

Much funnier then expected going into watching this.I really had low expectations for this one. Funnier then White Castle? Not at all but defiantly worth checking out if you have HBO.

3/5

Ninja Assassin

Didn't have high expectations for this one, but I thought it might be a fun popcorn movie. Turned it off after a half hour.

Pandorum

Meh. Lasted through this one, but I couldn't recommend it to anyone.

Tale of Despereaux Decent...I liked how they compared the different "worlds", more name actors in it than I expected, Dustin Hoffman's character was pretty good. About on the level of teh worst Pixar movies......6.3/10

Sukiyaki Western Django I almost turned this off after the first scene, which was some terrible crap with Tarantino making a cameo that was absolutely unecessary. Got better after that, but never got me all that interested. Reminded me of that Bruce Willis/Chris Walken movie Last Man Standing, except not near as good. There was another Tarantino cameo later, once again unecessary and disrupted any flow the movie had. Couldve been at least a little better.......4.8/10

A critic from Salon.com had a good point about this: the Academy has been nominating and voting for movies like No Country for Old Men recently. And it's getting charged with being out of touch with the common moviegoer. So she argued that giving the best picture nod to Avatar would be a return to the time when the Academy voted for more popular and less arty films.

Watched Frost Nixon over the weekend on HBO.

Very good movie. Can't explain it. I felt like I should have been bored, etc. But could not turn it off.

Next thing I knew, it's over and I kept saying to myself how good it was.

Interview With the Vampire - Loved it. Not a huge fan of vampire movies but this was just an all around interesting movie. What strikes me the most is that you'll never see movies with interesting stories such as this ever again, imo.

Good Hair- Chris Rock documentary on the black hair industry. Incredibly interesting and funny at the same time. CR is a pretty darn good interviewer.

I didn't see White Castle, and I thought this movie would be terrible. But I was entertained.

Definitely. The movie could have been really dull, but the acting is top notch and the movie had just the right pacing.

I also thoroughly enjoyed this movie. All in all, Nixon was one of the most fascinating President's..EVER.

Yes. Nixon had his share of problems, but when you look at his achievements, he was far more progressive than people give him credit for.

Rushmore - This is supposed to be a corky cult classic, right? I'm not sure I got it. It was ok, but the main character was forgettable to me. 6/10

This is a weird movie. People like this a lot, but I prefer Anderson's Bottle Rocket.
just when I think you can't be more wrong on a movie like Friday, you get this one completely right.some people swear Rushmore is better. I think they're insane.

I've only seen Rushmore once, but I actually enjoyed Anderson's The Darjeeling Limited a bit more. And just to clarify what I said about Friday, I've seen it twice. I laughed a few times. I just don't think it's the hilarious masterpiece it's being made out to be.
