My Blue Heaven

Steve Martin thread reminded me that I actually haven't seen a lot of his movies. He is the only thing that stands out. The scenes without him between Rick Moranis and Joan Cusack are unbearable. Seemed more like an overlong SNL skit, but I enjoyed it for the most part because of Martin.

2.5/5
Aside from the obvious classics like "Planes, Trains, and Automobiles" and "The Jerk," two must-see Martin comedies I mentioned in another thread are "All of Me" and "The Man With Two Brains." Brilliant.

Haven't seen either of them. Man with Two Brains is queued up to be mailed tomorrow. Hopefully will be able to get to All of Me in the next couple weeks.

Role Models

I can't remember if I reviewed this or not. A perfunctory comedy, but still enjoyable.
1 of the best comedies of 2008...not quite Step Brothers status though
I'd put it squarely in line with Rudd's I Love You, Man.
We agreed on I Love You Man, but I think Role Models was much better than it.Key for me on Role Models: when Stiffler leaves the kid at the party and the movie has that 5-10 minute reconciliation it slows down. BUT, after that the ending is fantastic with the live-LOTR combined with KISS. Most comedies flame out towards the end (ie Wedding Crashers), this one goes out strong
The end was surprisingly sweet, and that did make the movie very satisfying.
:goodposting: I couldn't believe how touching the ending was.It also had many more laugh out loud moments for me than probably any comedy the past two or three years. I thought the black kid was hilarious in the trailer, but the fact that Stiffler was one of the main characters tempered my enthusiasm. He hung in there though. I'm still laughing at "Apparently we're not supposed to butt-f these kids." :lmao:

Sweet. I wish I could be you and watch those for the first time again.

Yeah. So many movies try extra hard to be sweet. So when a movie like Role Models does an ending this genuine and heartfelt, it's refreshing.

Martial arts night in the Hooter man cave....

A Dangerous Man

Actually not bad for a recent Segal flick. Lots of possibly unintentional humor for Segal fans. If the man threatens to #### you up ugly, don't have something smart to say. Plot is a disaster and way too complicated. Chinese shooting Russians, Cops shooting Russians, Russians shooting Chinese, Cops shooting cops. There is at least 40 minutes of almost nonstop gunfire in the middle of the movie. Segal sex scenes with him in a full jacket and the chick naked are hilarious.

2/5

Ninja Assassin

CGI blood sucks, doesn't matter if there are gallons and gallons of it on screen throughout the movie. More arm removals and decapitations than any other film in existence. Some cool set pieces and a very charismatic main character that I wish they would have featured more. Decent flick if you don't mind gore and would like to shut the brain off for a while.

3/5

Mirrors........IIRC, this seemed to marketed as a Amityville-esque type deal where the mirrors in the family's house were going against them. It didnt have much to do with that at all. Story was actually much better than I expected and went into some unexpected depth/investigating. Overall decent and certainly good enough watch, but the ending sucked IMO and it loses 0.5 because of that. A couple pretty gory scenes, but I like that kind of stuff......5.8/10

Very enjoyable movie. I think it's made better by the fact that this is the same guy who directed V For Vendetta.

Man With Two Brains

Very funny movie. One of those that I wish this was my 10th time watching instead of my first. Probably will keep it over the weekend and get a couple more viewings in. Some of the best literal comedy I've ever seen, (Loaded Weapon 1 is way up there as well). The running gags were great too. Got a little old by the third act which often happens with comedies, but the first 2/3 are gold. The "When do you get your hands removed from your face?" and the "I want to enjoy this moment forever" gags had me rolling.

3.5/5

Due totally to this thread I rented Very Bad Things. I'm not sure why I thought it was a new release but as soon as I saw John Favrau I new it was a bit older. 1998. No idea how this one got past me but I loved it. I'm not a big Christian Slater fan but he was really good in this. Definately takes a darker turn than The Hangover.

I'm surprised I never heard of it before. Definately an underrated comedy.

Watching Mega Piranha on SyFy right now

  Very Cheesy special effects, really bad acting, Tiffany and her bouncing tracts of lands plus Greg Brady

Doesn't get much better then this

That was one of the more disturbing movies I've seen. There were dark humor moments, but I wouldn't really call it a comedy or compare it to the Hangover.

:hophead:
So you think it's like the Hangover?Or not disturbing?

I don't want to party with you.
Conceptually, the guys that made the Hangover had to have at least seen and appreciate Very Bad Things.I was  that you wouldn't call it a comedy. It's so incredibly over the top that it would have to be the most mean spirited thing ever produced if it wasn't intended for laughs. Uncomfortable laughs for sure, but laughs all the same. The part with Keith David is incredibly hard to watch though, I can't help but feel bad for what they did to that guy.

I actually seen this in theaters as a teen, there were about a dozen people in the theater when it started and every single one except me and my buddy got up and left at some point.

You probably wouldn't want to party with me though, I could totally see that series of unfortunate events happening to me and my friends in the absolute worst case scenario of our lives.

I own it, I love it. If dark, dark comedies like this are your thing, make sure you've seen Shallow Grave, Blood Simple, Election, Ice Harvest, In Bruges, and Grosse Point Blank. But yeah, Very Bad Things probably takes the cake.

ETA: Heathers, 2nd on my list.

Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans

This movie is a good example of why I could never be a cop, I'd try pulling off the exact same stuff this guy does. Good for some comedic value at least, but he is a little too obvious about his usage. Always sniffing and wiping his nose. If Cage can do one thing, it's play a guy completely strung out and desperate. He cans the tough guy act for the most part, and probably his best performance since Bringing Out the Dead. Still, there is little substance here and I hated the ending. I haven't seen the original in so long that I probably need to watch it again before I dare make any comparisons. If you liked Training Day, you will probably enjoy this, but it isn't as good. Exhibit is surprisingly good. Kilmer doesn't get anything to do, which disappointed me.

3/5

Moonraker

Everything you could want from a Bond movie, and probably in my top 5 for the series. Jaws was a great villian. Dr. Goodhead was a top notch bond girl. The skydiving fight, boat mortar chase, and space laser fight were all fantastic set pieces.

4/5

Caught The Informant last night....well worth it. Matt Damon at his level best.

As far as movies, it's right up there with the "paint your own reality" classics:

1) Catch Me If You Can, and

2) What The Bleep, Down The Rabbit Hole.

really twisted. my thoughts of this movie change every time i see it, from love to hate, depending on my mood.

A Serious Man- I found it be almost painful to watch. Slow, and plodding. A real disappointment. I was expecting so much more.
:goodposting: I have to agree with you. As I watched this I was continually wondering if this was an ethnic thing I wasn't grasping or what.
I like the movie. I was raised Jewish. But I find Judaism to be about as boring as anything in the world. So I can't say that background helped me at all.

Better than Adaptation.?Your thoughts on it are about the most negative Ive read for BL, pretty excited to see this as someone who is a Cage fan when he decides to do a role/movie where he doesnt completely phone it in

Totally brainfarted on Adaptation, which I think was a better performance than even Leaving Las Vegas.Don't get me wrong, I liked it, but it would be very hard to recommend to someone that isn't in to the same kind of stuff. I'm sure you'll enjoy it, I just wish there was a bit more substance.

Just got done watching The Fourth Kind.

Entertaining and I enjoyed it...I'm a sucker for alien stuff though for some reason.

Kind of freaky shiz. Much of the real videos blurred out, but parts seen (bodies hovering, bodies distorting) and things heard (weird voices, ancient dialect) that can't be denied.

Is there any explanation or something I'm not getting here that this is all just a hoax of some kind?

I'll take his performance in Matchstick Men over any of those, but they are all great performances. He is irritating and phones it in sometimes, but the man can certainly bring it on a regular basis.

An underrated Cage movie that almost no one saw was The Weatherman.

Two movies:

The Indian in the Cupboard

I read this to my son and we liked it, so I rented the Frank Oz-directed film version. While the acting was mediocre, the movie did a fine job of translating the book. Nice moral tale here. Highly recommended for parents of young children.

Live Free or Die Hard

I read a lot of criticism of this movie, but I really don't get it. This is my second viewing, and I think this movie is a lot of fun. While this'll never be thought of in the same light as the original Die Hard, Live Free is better than most current crappy action movies.

I thought that Maggie Q was hot enough to make the movie worth seeing.I saw The Informant and was pretty disappointed. The acting was good but it started off confusing and eventually at the end, I was just glad it was over.

The Unborn....I actually finished the whole thing, but if I tried to write this review more than a couple days after I saw it, Id probably forget I watched it. Gary Oldman and Idris Elba were brought along way too late to even make it decent. When it comes to horror/sci-fi movies like this, sometimes bad is still good, but this was just bad. Megan Fox lookalike - Odette Yussman - was pretty good as the lead actually, and if anything was nice to look at without annoying you like Megan Fox seems to after awhile.....3/10

The Rocker...Rainn Wilson is usually either hilarious or not funny at all to me. Despite plenty of cheese, Wilson does his best Jack Black imitation and succeeds with a surprisingly high amount of laughs. I expected this movie to suck and that I wouldnt even finish it, but the laughs are consistent and the film moves at a nice pace. I liked it, but I think movie would be at its best for 9-13 year olds interested in music......5.6/10

The Pianist...I remember starting to watch this not long after it came out but turned it off after 30 minutes (dont recall why exactly). It is pretty slow at initially, and since you know whats going to happen, the first 45 minutes makes you want the film to start going somewhere despite solid acting from no-names + Brody. Although the first half almost makes you feel like one of the Jews youre watching because of the strain it kind of puts on you, the last hour and 15 minutes more than makes up for it and is riveting. I have yet to see a movie where a didnt like Brody's performance, and this one is no different. As the film progresses, so do his struggles and sanity, which he exhibits to a tee. Not sure if this was actually filmed in Warsaw or not, but the backdrops, buildings, and their interiors were great. One of those movies like Frost/Nixon which I saw recently: pretty much what I expected going in, respect what I saw, but I didnt love it. Doubt I'll ever watch it again, but Id recommend at least seeing it once.....8.2/10

A little help...

Trying to remember a movie title. I believe it's a one word title about a boy that's a music prodigy, he earns some money as a street performer and at the end of the movie he conducts a symphony. In the middle there's a whole subplot about a guy that has an army of young pickpockets and he wants the musical kid to be part of his crew, and he claims the kid is his son.

Just can't remember the title.

Kind of freaky shiz. Much of the real videos blurred out, but parts seen (bodies hovering, bodies distorting) and things heard (weird voices, ancient dialect) that can't be denied.

Is there any explanation or something I'm not getting here that this is all just a hoax of some kind?
