finally saw The Hangover last night, good god was that great, in the end pics that old lady actually gave him a bj?
I'm sure it was prosthetic or it wouldn't have gotten by the sensors. Probably the same technology they used in that HBO or Showtime simulated sex show last year.I watched this last week. Thought it was really funny - not the funniest movie every as some tote but very good with what I'm sure will be very good re-watchability.
Watched it again last night. Rewatchability was better than I thought it would be initially, although its been almost a year since I saw it the first time. One thing is for sure though, Zach Galifianakis makes that movie

Took my daughter to see Robin Hood last night. enjoyable and "intense" at times. One of those movies where you find yourself concentrating on what is being said so you can follow the story. Couldn't believe it had been 2 hours and 20 minutes when it finished, time flew with this movie. Now the wait for the sequel :goodposting:
This is getting a lot of mediocre reviews. I think that's mostly due to the fact that Scott and Crowe made the similar Gladiator. But as was the case with Goodfellas and Casino, I am betting that the second movie is good enough to stand on it's own. I'm looking forward to seeing Robin Hood.
I think it comes down to what are you expecting when you go in.Definitely a build up to a sequel but we enjoyed the story line on how he becomes an "outlaw".

I watched it for the first time since seeing it in the theater. it was still funny but maybe not the laugh riot it was the first time around.

That's what I figured but Zach G's facial expressions, especially the far away shot almost seemed like he was "shocked" she was doing it

The Hangover had some very weak moments. But that last photo sequence is about the funniest thing I've ever seen in a movie.

Harlan County, USA - very interesting documentary about a strike in Kentucky coal country in the early 70s. Definitely not an area of the country, group of people, or issue that gets much play in the history books or in entertainment. I really liked that the director allowed the people there to tell the story rather than insert herself into it. Also enjoyed the live performances of blues/bluegrass. I'd definitely recommend it to documentary lovers, it's offered for instant streaming by Netflix.
Arguably one of the best Docs evah. :P

Great documentary, I highly recommend it

I finally got around to cataloguing all my DVDs- now time to watch and review. Had a triple feature last night, one decade old blockbuster, one extremely small indy and one foreign (Spain)

DARK BLUE

Kurt Russell cop movie, a bit above the norm, but not as much as it should have been. Worth a watch and good performances by Russell and Brendan Gleeson. About as dark as you would expect from an Ellroy novel. I just felt like it should have ended up being better than it was.

HAPPY VALLEY

Independent film about small town Utah. THe director's daughter unwittingly gave her best friend a heroin overdose and did not notice until too late the next morning. First they drive the body to the woods and hide it, but end up confessing shortly thereafter. The director explores the incongruent drug abuse in Utah and talks to several LDS junkies and profiles a few other cases. He attempts to get the victim's mom to forgive his daughter, too. Some of the scenes with the dead girl's father were heartbreaking and made me weep. Overall an interesting, even compelling film. Low budget and amateurish, but its honesty and "real-ness" compensate for minor flaws. Highly recommended.

4.6/5 stars

THE METHOD / EL METHODO

Spanish film where seven high level management candidates are put in a room together as the final part of their interview process. One by one, they are eliminated from consideration, amid much trickery, deception and strategy. This film really works well and you get to know and care about most of the characters (or know and despise them). Kind of a corporate Glengary Glenross for the 21st century.

Saw Sherlock Holmes.

It was better than I expected. Good leads, decent story. The gritty London look was pretty cool.

As far as The Hangover, I think I've got to watch it again. It was entertaining but I just didn't laugh much. Sometimes you have to be in the right mood and maybe I wasn't when I first saw it.

I see a lot of people saying they liked Sherlock Holmes, and I found it somewhat entertaining, however:

The Messenger - Woody Harrelson plays an Army officer who is responsible for notifying next of kin that their family member has been killed in action.

Very sad & touching in several parts, very slow moving and boring in others.

Watched Idiocracy tonight. Awful movie, one of the worst I've ever seen. In line with Leonard Part VI.
Idiocracy could have been good. All they needed to do was look to Futurama as a template on how to make a futuristic satire.
Loved the concept of Idiocracy. Horrible script. Horrible directing. Didn't pay close enough attention to evaluate the acting.
I agree that Idiocracy missed the mark, and as a moviegoing experience, I was disappointed, too. But I was really surprised by how many times I found myself quoting it afterwards. The Fuddruckers thing in the beginning was funny, the documentary of the two family trees was the centerpiece of the movie, and there were some other funny spots, too. But Maya Rudolph sucks, and the whole thing had a SNL movie feel to it, instead of the Mike Judge movie I thought I was seeing.

Despite big flaws, there are some brilliant bits. Just the TV show OW MY BALLS makes it worth one watch.

That, and the aforementioned family tree at the beginning, where the kid on the stupid person side says "I'm gonna #### all you #####es!" after his football game. I quote that all the time.

Judge did an interview on NPR last year. Teri Gross asked him how he came up with the bit where a guy using big words made people call him a ### (not a straight man - the other kind). He said that he remembered being in junior high when a teacher asked the class a question. Judge raised his hand and answered correctly. The guy behind him said, "Pffft. ###."

Taking Chance is a movie that deals with that as well. Kevin Bacon transports a soldier home from Iraq. Very well done HBO flick.

Just wathced "Ninja Assassin". HOLY COW! THAT WAS AWESOME! HOW DID I MISS THIS EARLIER? If you like Ninjas at all, this movie is the best Ninja movie in a VERY long time. It's really bloody, so don't watch with the wife or kids. But I will defiitely be hoping for a sequel or more of this genre done this way. AWESOME AWESOME movie. Great fight scenes and decent enough plot to carry it.
Just watched this this weekend, and I'll agree with the above assessment. Maybe change "AWESOME AWESOME" to "Really fun/entertaining".
I was completely entertained by all the fight scenes and seeing the get away car all riddled with throwing stars. When I watch it again, it will be with the remote in hand to fast forward through some slower spots- but this movie is far better than I expected.I probably haven't been this entertained in a straight martial arts film since Iron Monkey.

I enjoyed Ninja Assassin. Iron Monkey is the bomb. While it's not a martial arts movie per se, Brotherhood of the Wolf has some great fight scenes.

Just finished watching 'Home for the Holidays' for the first time in a few years.

Some moments still have me rollin'... :goodposting:

I am a huge fan of the first 2/3 to 3/4 of Brotherhood of the wolf. The opening fight scene in the rain is stunning.

Watched the documentary Planet B-Boy last night.

Solid flick with a lot of good history of the beginnings of Hip Hop and Breakdancing which leads into documenting the dancers and leading up to a competition for best dance crew in the world.

Some of the moves these guys do is absolutely ridiculous. The strength and athleticism needed is amazing.

Yeah, the end is heavy-handed. Love the fight scenes, though.

Just got done watching this. Solid, entertaining ninja flick.Had to LOL when they let the female researcher (with absolutely zero training and fist time holding a gun) tag along to the CIA raid on the master ninja fortress. What could go wrong?

Me and my roommates picked up HBO to watch Taking Chance back when it came on the first time because 2 of my roommates knew the kid that died, after the movie I mentioned that I thought the movie was incredibly boring and I had 2 upset roommates for a week.I'm good at stories, you guys are welcome.

Just got done watching The Blind Side. Don't care that it's a decent story, and glad everything worked out for Mr. Oher. This movie was terrible. Completely cookie-cutter, Lifetime movie of the week bad. Sandra should give the oscar to Julia Roberts - I think she just copied her character from Erin Brockovich (which I found equally amusing when that role won best actress).

Every time I consider watching this someone posts a negative review confirming this movie's suckitude.

Gentleman Broncos

Continuing to test my theory that a good trailer makes a good movie despite bad reviews. So far I am 2-2 with this theory. This trailer was hilarious, but the movie is just too weird and too disgusting to watch. I did laugh out loud a few times. But for every laugh there's a moment that makes you nauseous. Sam Rockwell is hilarious, as usual. However, I almost turned it off when the giant snake took a dump on his owner.

Wow, I was actually going to watch this sometime too. Thanks for the heads up. Nothing worse then a bad poop joke.

It's not total garbage. There are some laughs, as I mentioned. But the gross out stuff is REALLY GROSS. Plus, I know this director is fascinated by ugly people - and that's fine. But he's not just content with casting ugly people: one major character here constantly makes really ridiculous faces. This director is a bit enamored with his own kink.

It just occurred to me that there's a bit of Peter Jackson's "Bad Taste" in this movie.

Diner - 1983 Barry Levinson film set in 1950s Baltimore. The ensemble cast includes Mickey Rourke and Kevin Bacon. I liked this a lot, it reminded me of Dazed and Confused in that it's basically a conflict-free portrait of a group of friends over the course of a short period of time (a couple days here vs. 1 day in D&C), set in a distinctive time and place. Recommended

Crazy Heart is one of the best movies I've seen in awhile. Jeff Bridges nails the part.

The Messenger had it's moments but overall I felt it was kind of slow and boring.

Precious was interesting and good, but seemed like it might have been a bit overrated during awards season.

Loved this movie, but I haven't seen it in 25 years. Would like to see it again.

The Road

Very faithful adaptation of the book that transferred well to the big screen. They did inject a little bit of optimism to several parts, but that doesn't change the fact that it's the most bleak, depressive, film made in years. The atmosphere and setting was great, just like I imagined it reading the book. The film could not possibly been cast better. Not only do Viggo and the child actor nail their roles and make it easy to focus on them for the entire film, but the supporting character roles are fantastic. Duvall, Pearce, Michael K. Williams, and Garret Dillahunt all fit their parts to the T. I also liked that they chose to cut out some of the stuff with the boat towards the end, that part always left me a little confused in the novel. I will always prefer the novel version just because of the nature of the story and would most definitely read that again before watching the film. But as far as adaptations go, this captured exactly what it tried to.

My brother had recommended the book a while back but I hadn't got around to reading it.If I watch this before reading it would it totally ruin the book experience?

I don't think so. The book is the only one I've ever read in one sitting. You can probably finish the book in about a half hour more than the film. Everything was almost exactly as I visualized in the book and it follows the same plot line. Almost nothing is left out, almost nothing is added. The writing style is unique, no quotations, no chapters, very little actual structure at all. Some people may get annoyed by this and would prefer the film maybe.

This would normally be right up my alley but in discussing the book here on the board, someone said that it was tough to read if you have a young son. Having a 16 month old son, that's made me shy away from the book and the movie. I had trouble with District 9 because of the father/son thing. I'm not sure I could handle this.

I read this book the week after my son was born and definitely made me teary eyed. The glue that holds the story together is the bond between the father and son. It may be a tough read, but I would recommend it to any father, in fact, it was powerful enough that I would even consider it a required read.

As long as we're talking about father/son moments, a lot of my favorites come from watching Finding Nemo with my son. The father/son bond is why it's my favorite Pixar film.

Marlin: Hey. Guess what? Nemo: What?

Marlin: Sea turtles? I met one, and he was a hundred and fifty years old.

Nemo: Hundred and fifty?

Marlin: Yup.

Nemo: Oh. 'Cause Sandy Plankton said that they only live to be a hundred.

Marlin: Sandy Plankton? You think I would travel the whole ocean and not know as much as Sandy Plankton? He was a hundred and fifty, not a hundred.

This movie looks awful.
really?got a ton of recognition during the major awards shows.
So did Forrest Gump and Titanic. Hey, I could be dead wrong. It's very possible that Precious isn't a heavy-handed, sophomoric melodrama. Just saying that the little I've seen doesn't do much to dissuade me from that characterization.
