Seriously, re-release Barfly. I've wanted to see this for years and just can't bring myself to purchase another dvd.
I dont think they've even released it on DVD though, right? So could you even buy it?I never saw it either except that channel thats like 22 on DirecTV (its like Fox's stepchild kind of) played it a few months back and I finally saw it. Pretty awesome. I love Rourke.
There is a rare dvd release going for like $20 on ebay. Jdoggy found it for me last time I was crying about it I think.
They have a new, sealed copy for $470

Hadn't seen it in years since it was released in theaters. I am a sucker for anything written by David Mamet, so of course I like this movie. There are some big flaws, for sure. And there are some scenes that just don't work. But the satire here is even more salient than it was when it first came out.

This reminded me of In the Loop (2009), which in many ways a far superior movie.
Totally agree....Still need to DVR In The Loop...Its been on SHO or something recently
In The Loop is really clever. If you like satire with lots of good dialogue, you'll dig it.

finally got around to watching "moon" with sam rockwell on netflix on-demand. i liked it quite a bit. it's a little glib and thin in the plotting but it kind of has to lest it become "solaris". still pretty good mainly because of sam rockwell carrying the film. i kind of appreciated it's comparatively low rent production values too.

It's getting to the point where I'm pretty sure the lower the budget the more I'm going to like it.Think of what happened to George Lucas - the more money he had to work with the worse his movies got.

:goodposting: Low budget's generally mean more heart from the creator, and big name leads that actually care about the project rather than the paychecks.

One of the main reasons I'm really looking forward to Monsters.

It's why I really enjoyed a movie like "Ink". The acting was poor and it was obviously low budget but it had heart and you could tell that the people involved really cared about the project.
Plus when 10's or 100's of millions of other people's dollars are involved, they don't want you taking too many risks that would make your project stand out, they want you to follow the Hollywood formula. No way Inceptions $160 million budget would have ever been greenlit if Dark Knight had made $80 million instead of $530 million.

An older guy came into work today raving about a movie, but I can't remember the title. He says Jamie Foxx was in it and played either an attorney general or an assistant attorney general. A family gets murdered, except the father somehow survives. There are a bunch of twists in it, and the movie sounds like something I'd love, but I can't remember the title. I'm pretty sure the title was a 3 or 4 word phrase. Can anyone help me out here?
Law Abiding Citizen.
Watched this on Netflix last night. 3/5.The character's motivations were much more interesting than how it all went down.

Just watched this. Fairly ok. Worth watching.

At no point was I rooting for Jamie Foxx and against Gerard Butler.

Just watched it too. Felt meh on it. Felt it easily could have been much better.

I finally got to see The Secret in Their Eyes last night - the Argentinian crime/mystery drama that won the oscar for best foreign film. Its a good movie for a date night - great Law/Order style crime mystery, great acting, and a decent twist at the end. The only criticisms might be that it is a bit heavy on the symbolism and foreshadowing, the story depends on a couple big leaps of faith and the love story is a bit hokey. Overall, highly recommended.
Just noticed this is now on Netflix - definitely worth a rental.

I saw the movie The Runaways a while ago. I thought it was a really cool movie. I liked it a lot. A few things tho... about before I watched it.

When I rented the movie On Demand all I thought was that it was about a bunch of young girls trying to make it in a rock band. As Im watching it... the girl says her name is Joan Jett. Then they say one of the girls in the band is Lita Ford. I guess you can get the picture. I was finding out about this whole story as it was being told... so in that respect it probably made it more enjoyable for me.

After the movie was over, I started doing some research about the band. Wasn't sure how accurate the movie was. All together, what I researched wasn't that far off from the movie. And I was pretty much shocked to see that these girls were actually 15 - 17 yo range when all this was going on. It was really strange to me that this actually happened in the 70's. They were actually a huge act in freakin' JAPAN! It was strange... but it was true.

I also found out that two of the girls in the movie were in the famous vampire show / movies. After I found out about that... it vaguely brought back a memory of seeing an article about the movie on footballguys... but not something I remembered well. Anyway... I was pretty shocked that these girls were in an international rock band... and most of them started before they could drive. I am sure it paved the way for a whole bunch of cheesy female acts that i absolutely loved in the 80'. Rock on Kim Wilde... We're the Kids in AMERICA!!!

watched "hot tub time machine" with my wife last night. very entertaining! plot holes big enough to drive a semi through but it didn't matter. we laughed and laughed a lot more. perfect saturday night popcorn flick!

Saw Kick-### largely due to what has been said in this thread. I thought the action sequences were really cool, and that the Hit Girl character was awesome (although I didn't think the gratuitous swearing was necessary), but besides that I didn't think it was very good or funny. I thought the dialogue was pretty bad, seemed very unnatural and I don't think it was the actors' fault. The main fault I had with the movie is how it's supposed to be about how a regular/normal person tries to become a superhero, but the main character displays a tonne of abnormal qualities which takes away from the whole reality aspect which is what I thought they were going for from the main character at least.

I think a lot of this was done on purpose, especially Cage playing homage to Adam West's batman. It's in the tradition of comic book stories.

Clash of the Titans

Had to see for myself, not as bad as I was expecting but that's not saying much. Major swinging misses at Zeus, Medusa, and the Krakken. Hades and his imps were pretty decent a couple decent action sequences. Enough already with Worthington as an action lead, he is Bale without the acting chops or charisma. Sword and stone movies just don't work as well with all the fancy cgi, I miss the 80's.

Clay Pigeons

Overlooked black comedy/murder story about a down hill sequence of events. Fun to see Joaquin Phoenix vs Vince Vaughn as a sociopath.

Westworld

I've read and watched a lot of Crichton, but for some reason had never seen this. Starts off great, but gets a little unfocused by the time it hits the climax, they could have done a little more with the material. Yul Brynner is absolutely fantastic as the gunslinger. James Brolin is great too. Crichton pretty much redid this concept with dinosaurs when he wrote Jurassic Park.

4/5

To add to the sentences I thought I'd never say, I just saw a pretty good Rob Schneider movie. It's called "The Chosen One", about a guy in the fits of depression and the South American tribe that thinks he's the savior of their village. You take that setup and add Rob Schneider to it, and you can probably guess the movie from A to Z....and you'd be wrong. I have no idea where it came from, but it works. Schneider gives a restrained, almost touching performance in what I think is also his directorial debut. Schneider leaves all the zanyness to co-star Marcus Giamatti and Steve Buscemi turns in a nice job as Rob's Monk brother.

Rob won't be getting any statues for this, but it was worth watching.

Am I wrong for thinking this was made for TV? I remember loving it as a kid, on tv. Feel like I caught it more recently and thought it was pretty slight. Of course, my memory sucks, so I could be thinking about an old Dynasty episode.

Not sure, for some reason I think you are right, but they did have a good looking widescreen print from 1973, because the dvd looks great. It is pretty toned down, but relentless. Here are a couple of interesting factoids I just found on imdb.-Director John Carpenter based the "indestructable" nature of his killer Michael Meyers in Halloween (1978) on Yul Brynner's character in this film.

-The first use of computer digitized images as part of a feature film (not merely monitor graphics) was the Gunslinger's point of view in Westworld. After the process was finally developed enough to produce satisfactory results, it took a mere eight hours to produce each ten seconds of Gunslinger's pixellated POV.

Kenneth Branagh's Hamlet - 6.5/10

I waited 14 years to see this. It took forever to come out on DVD and by that time I figured I might as well wait for the BluRay. Well, it wasn't worth the wait. For some reason giving a stage performance on film doesn't work so well. It's the first time the complete play has been put to film and I can see why. It's just far too long.

I even liked the Mel Gibson version better. Going to have to try the Olivier verson sometime.

White Heat

I've only seen a few dozen films made before 1950 and have been working to correct that. This is the first time I had ever seen a James Cagney movie. Great gangster flick. Cody Jarrett obviously had a big influence on the characters of Tony Montana and Tony Soprano. This was like watching what would have happened if Tommy DeVito became a made man. Highly recommended and I really need to take in some more Cagney as well. This will be included on any of my "Top 100" lists from now on.

eh, i would stay away from the olivier version. he's a hammy, self-serving actor really. not that branagh isn't one too but i still prefer his hamlet to sir larry's. there are problems with the production - he's far too old, for starters - but he does a good job showing how complex the play is. mel plays it like you would expect mel would and made prince hamlet into another version of his "lethal weapon" character.

Only got me 8 points in the Greatest Movies Draft, but it was in a tough group.

Well yeah, and I wonder how much he was "pretending" the crazy part of Hamlet. Still, it really is a great play, isn't it?

Shafted.I've queued up Angels with Dirty Faces and The Public Enemy.

I need to go back and review that draft again.

ETA: Man, that was a tough category, should have been a double digiter somehow, some way though.

You guys just talked me into watching the Mel Gibson version.

Ghost Writer

This movie had lots of potential. Excellent acting, beautiful photography, and a solid script. Plus, Ewan McGregor's protagonist is quite prickly, which was an interesting twist. But man did this movie blow it at the end. Mrs. Dogg and I looked at each other and said, "Is that all?"

I'm glad I saw the movie, but what a disappointing ending.

I think the ending had a lot to do with how I felt about it as well. I was like "OK, it's an OK movie and all, but, I don't feel like I like it as much as I should."

If you're into action packed thrillers, this movie will bore you. It's a subtle, smart movie that relies on characters more than action. Worth a rental despite the end.

A strong ending would have allowed me to recommended this movie heartily. But as it stands, it was a letdown.

I can't imagine giving money to Polanski.
I don't relish that, either. Although budgeting your entertainment expenses based on the morality of the artist is going to net you fairly boring results. Wagner was a stone cold racist, but he sure knew how to knock out a catchy show tune.

It's not against the law to be a racist. It is to rape children.
doesn't seem like the legal distinction is necessary. would you avoid seeing a movie b/c the director was a drug user? more of a moral issue I'd think.

It is possible to watch the movie without Polanski receiving any proceeds.
Not worth the effort.

Probably not the thread to debate this. I think using drugs is primarily self destructive. Not so with Polanski's crime.Yes. My guidelines probably are applied inconsistenly. But in such an egregious case, it's pretty easy.

Wrong thread, I agree. But I think Polanski should be in jail. No question.

it seems pretty easy to agree that Polanski is a scumbag, but it's not because he broke a law. if it was somehow legal to do what he did, he'd still be a scumbag. and I imagine there are plenty of other laws that people can break which wouldn't influence your opinion of their movies much at all.

I'm not sure what you're saying. I'm not so down on Polanski because he broke the law as I am because of the law he broke.

but you pointed out the "legality" of racism as a reason why that doesn't bother you as much. Just seemed an odd choice of reasoning to back up your claim that you didn't want to support Polanski. My only point was the legality of either action was kind of besides the point, as you've admitted with your stance on drug users, etc. I don't think we're disagreeing.
