Watching The Losers. It's pretty bad. Amazing how Hollywood has trouble making an entertaining B movie these days. Has some talented actors in this (Idrs Elba, Zoe Saldana, etc). This movie could and should be a lot of fun and stupid action.

Been pimping this doc for a bit now. Decided to watch it again while I wait for my next shipment of movies in the mail. Love this movie. It's about a guy in WI trying to make a couple of low-budget movies. Great cast of characters that makes this movie funny as hell. I am laughing every time his buddy (Mike, I think?) is on screen - he's a combo of Silent Bob and Spiccoli.
 Big fan.
Me too. And  that anyone could hate Clerks.
I love this movie. One of the most inspiring movies I've ever seen, and a beautiful study of true friendship.
Love this movie. But I didn't find it inspiring - their delusion is sad and depressing. These two guys don't have a chance ...at just about anything.

Finally watched Malick's Days of Heaven yesterday. This was probably my least favorite work of his. Don't really know what to say. I guess I might have had unreasonable expectations given how much I love The New World, The Thin Red Line and Badlands. I felt really meh about it. It still had breathtaking scenes but the story just didn't do it for me.

hmmm... I get not getting that into the story- but for me, this is the most beautifully shot film in the history of film (or at least the movies I've seen), and that makes it an all-timer. New World is probably my least favorite (the "civilized" vs "natural" dialogue was a little too forced, IMO, and I didn't like the coda trip to England)- and I still love it.

Well, I've long thought that the main difference between success and failure isn't usually talent - it's tenacity. And since we know that these guys sold more units than they'd ever imagined, their hard work paid off.

Saintfool will tell you you're wrong. Days of Heaven is Malick's greatest work, he says. I prefer The Lost World.

3.5/5

If you enjoy Indie comedys, be sure to check this out. Its not a great film because it has a lot of fluff. Lisa Kudrow's character didn't make a lot of sense to me. This movie has a very big heart and is very touching, but I don't know if I would classify it as a family movie because it has a few very crude references in it. I'm pretty hard to impress with an ending because a lot of recent movies fall apart in the third act (Doesn't anyone read screenwriting guides anymore?), but this didn't have the typical hollywood ending and I enjoyed it.
Just watched this - its pretty enjoyable. Definitely worth a rental for a quirky, humorous indie flick.

Seven Pounds

Wasnt expecting much from this movie because it seemed to get a meh from most people, alongside a predictable ending. I beg to differ. Yes, I basically had the ending pegged for the most part after like 20-30 minutes in, but I also didnt get the feeling like it was supposed to be a surprise/twist ending or some puzzle that you had to figure out. I actually thought it was the opposite, that they wanted the viewer to see what Will Smith was going thru and planning on doing, and youre along for the journey, so to speak. His plans werent totally clear, but plenty of clues are all over the place. Man, Will Smith just seems to become a better actor every (dramatic) movie. I think he outdid his job in Pursuit of Happiness here. Roasario Dawson was also very good. Although a somewhat melancholy movie throughout, its inspiring at the same time. I almost shed some man tears at the end. 8.3/10
Just watched this, one of the better newer movies I've seen over the past few years.

"Days..." does use voice-over narration. I'm really surprised that it isn't getting more love among some of the folks here. Yes, it's a beautiful looking film but it also connects that to the plot. It tells a story with a pretty sparse script and feels almost like a book it its storytelling. It's just lovely and in my top 5 films.

Have you watched it recently? The more classic films I watch the more I realize how dated they seem. Films from the 40s and 50s work for me because the speech patterns and cadences are so far removed from modern films, it's like a completely different genre. But I've been watching more and more films from the 70s lately, and they aren't holding up well.

I've watched it at least once a year for the last 15 years maybe. It's ####### awesome.

I dig. I'm not writing off all old movies. There are plenty of them I love. I think that I'd feel different about some of these movies had I seen them when they were first released.

There are only a few exceptions to my "pre-'75" rule: High Noon, Cool Hand Luke, and M
I don't know if you've seen a ton of movies from the 40s and 50s, but I bet I could name some more titles you'd end up liking.
Probably. For me it's so hit and miss that I usually don't want to spend the time to find a good one.For instance, the last one I watched was The Searchers. Didn't like it.

Nope. Terrible ending - primarily because it was so abrupt. Although Eva Marie Saint =
Third Man
In the watch instantly queue.I'm going to give The Professionals a try before it's out of the Watch Instantly in a couple days.
if you like the professionals then you should give "the wild bunch" a try. peckinpah has a number of interesting, if flawed, movies. his catalog is really hit or miss for me.

I was hungover Saturday and watched a bunch of movies:

Street Fight: Had wanted to see this for a long time as I'm a Cory Booker fan (though let's not call him "the next Obama" any more since I hope he'll be a lot better than that). I knew about the mayoral race that this documentary followed, but had no idea just how absolutely terrible it was. Most despicable politics I've ever seen, and I'm from Chicago. Anyway, really interesting documentary about a very inspiring (to me) politician. 4/5

Heavy Metal in Baghdad: I wasn't sure what I'd think about this documentary following the only heavy metal band in Iraq, since I'm not really a metal fan, but damn was this fascinating. I'm not sure I've ever seen a better depiction of what everyday people deal with in a war zone. Somehow this is presented without being the least bit politicized; just guys trying to put on metal concerts and dealing with mortar fire, power outages, coming across dead people every day, security not letting fans in because they have goatees, etc. If you like metal and/or documentaries and haven't seen this one yet, bump it to the top of your queue. 4.5/5

A Mighty Heart: I wanted an easy-to watch movie, though I suppose "easy to watch" does not translate to "movies about beheadings" for everyone. Since I already knew the story here, I figured it would be easy viewing, but the movie delved into a lot of interesting detail and kept me very involved despite knowing the ending. Great acting all around, too (Jolie was actually the worst of the bunch, but very good). 4/5

The Damned United: Very entertaining biopic of Brian Clough. Didn't know much about him before this movie, but he was a fascinating character. Excellent supporting performances, but I found the lead was doing the exact same performance as he did in Frost/Nixon. I'd like to see him in a role where the first descriptive word is not "smug". 3.5/5

Funny Games: The original Austrian film from 1998, not the American remake of a few years ago. First of all, if you have kids, do not watch this movie. Second, if you don't have kids, you probably shouldn't watch it either. Squarely in the category of "great movies I'd never want to see again", this is right up there with Irreversible on the disturbing scale. The difference here is that not one iota of violence was shown on-screen, though somehow the director still made this probably the most terrifying movie I've ever seen. I've had nightmares for two nights straight after watching it. If you love a psychological horror film, see it, but you have been warned that you might be sorry you did. BONUS: The lead actor (father) is the same guy who was the lead in The Lives of Others. 4/5

I've started on The Wild Bunch a couple of times. Not sure why I didn't finish as it did grab my attention (scorpion vs ants).

Not one of my faves- but ok.

how do you feel about movies that were made in 1975? have you seen "mitchell" with john don baker?
It has Merlin Olsen and Linda Evans in it. Might be worth a try. :goodposting: ;)Actually, based on the description, it sounds AWESOME!
Joe Don Baker is Mitchell- a hard-nosed, soft-bellied cop with an affinity for porn and Schlitz. His latest assignment has him engaging in no-speed car chases, yelling at children, shooting innocents and sloppily carousing Linda Evans.

I didn't really care for the Wild Bunch at all. Best older films I've seen recently for the first time have been White Heat and Yojimbo.Wild Bunch had a lot of "shock value" material and just doesn't strike the same chord that it probably did with the audience back then. Women and children getting shot in the streets and that sort of thing.

Loved this movie. I agree that Michael Sheen plays similar characters in most of his movies, but that didn't bother me.

So Im going through netflix last nite and want to watch a short film before bed, so I find Aftermath. Only 32 minutes long and I say that will work, so I decide to watch it.

:goodposting:

;)
I am bored, so I googled this. There's like 10 movies called Aftermath. I have no idea what you watched but am very curious now.

OK, OK, I'll give it a 4/5. :goodposting: It really was very good.

ummmm, nevermind. I think I found it. :shark:
This short film presents in graphic detail the dirty little secret of funeral services. All too often, bodies are mutilated and raped. Karen Greenlee was jailed and became nationally famous for her rampant necrophilia in the 80s. Here, Nacho Cerda presents this topic with a great attention to detail and no sensationalism. The mortician fondles, mutilates, and rapes a corpse after the viewer witnesses a very accurate autopsy. The mortician takes home some souvenirs, pictures for himself and a heart for his dog. That's it, no distractions from the reality of the subject matter. It's not filmed in such a way as to shock the viewer but to present unapologetically the very sickening reality that things like this happen more often than we'd like to believe. The realism is the most disturbing part.

Cory Booker is a very likable guy, but I think he gets a tad bit over dramatic at times. A very entertaining documentary. It's refreshing to see a politician visibly upset about some of the injustices they face.

it's no different than sergio leone and other spaghetti westerns in that regard. it is certainly violent but really only at the end. what sets it apart is the cast - robert ryan, william holden, warren oates, jack elam, and borgnine - and direction of plot.

Never saw Days of Heaven. Besides saintfool's opinion, is it worth watching?
:goodposting:
It seemed like he was the only 1 recommending it. If only 1 person likes it and 5 dont, probably not gonna watch it
I lerve it. Looooaf it. You don't have me on ignore, do you? I just wrote about it at the start of all this... most beautifully filmed movie of all time, IMHO. Well acted, unbelievably directed and art-directed... and as Fool says, good enough story (although I can understand not getting into it) to make this an all-timer... easy top 10 for me.
