Well, I survived and so did the audience. The morning show was only half full and families were all in the back half and didnt bother me. Whew.First of all, 3D is COOL. This was my first experience with it since the 60s and it's really quite remarkable what they can do. I mean, i even watched the preview of the new Transformers with interest because of it, and youve no idea how unme that is. Unfortunately, it is also evil, for reasons i will spell out below.Believe me, i wishwishwish i could contradict the rabid panning of Pirates4 that Rud posted earlier but i cant, at least not nearly as much as i want to. The 3D is the problem, because it caused this movie to be not so much written as storyboarded. Each scene served only itself - used nothing which preceded it, helped not what proceded it. "Fill the screen" was the entire dictate of the picture and i'm amazed that soooo many talented people could not stem the tide of the technology to tell us a story or charm us in any way. My cousin certainly did fill the screen (though i was hoping that telling a story out on the open sea would rescue him from the chiaroscura of his previous work - alas, this is as nightish as P2&3). It's wise to give a movie like this to a choreographer, because the scenes are essentially "numbers" and no one can crowd a number with magnificence like a choreographer. And it's still a ball imagining my fey little cousin at the helm of an immensity such as this. Unfortunately, by the time of Pirates' climactic scenes, I no longer cared who won - deadly thing to do to such a charming character as Captain Jack. Oh, well.

Wanted to like this one, but shouldn't have read much about it. Kept seeing fairly good reviews of it, and had mild expectations, but thought it fell flat. The only thing that kept me interested was the hope that PSH was going to be in the movie more. The opening of the movie was great, then is became an average action movie, then I thought the last 20 mins or so were terrible. I guess I should be thankful there weren't cheesy slo-mo shots with doves or anything like that. 4/10.

The movie moved along quite fast, and was quite short, which really is ideal for most comedies (especially nonsensical ones); but unfortunately it is something a lot of comedies these days don't do and for that reason they often seem to peter out at the end. Coming in at well under 90 minutes, Hot Rod avoided this problem and was pretty strong throughout. If you're a fan of nonsensical, non-high brow humor, this film is worth a watch imo.

Been hearing very good things about this one. Couple people say it's in the 40 Year old Virgin territory, and does a great job of balancing the gross out gags with the real people/relationships. Look forward to checking this one out.

Well put. Consistently funny from start to finish. I wish there were more nonsensical movies that weren't constructed with a redeeming resolution that isn't funny. Comedies shouldn't be required to be realistic or heart-warming or teach a lesson about life. But if they aren't they won't appeal to women so they bomb at the box office. What did Hot Rod make, a couple million? It's too bad.

I liked it and I generally don't even like Jolie movies. Sure it was preposterous, but so are most action movies.
Black Swan - 7.5/10
Not quite the masterpiece it's made out to be. And Portman's performance is a bit overrated. I think an even more accomplished actress could have made the audience feel the "transformation" much more emotionally powerfully than she did. But overall it worked for me. I'll probably watch it again.

I know this was already mentioned multiple times in this thread. Really good movie my only knock (yes I know it was PG) was it was a tad intense for my 5 year old. She probably was not ready for such a type of movie with the "violent" overtones, etc.
Still she enjoyed it and most of it didn't "click" with her completely. She was a tad shocked with what happened to the kid at the end though....
Still a great movie.
