I didn't think the first AvP was too bad.
Thandie Newton destroyed that movie for me. Nothing she did worked at all IMO.She reminds me a lot of Jar Jar Binks. There are some great movies to be made if she's systematically CGI'd out of them.
I don't think Thandie Newton was in AVP. do you mean Sanaa Lathan?
Son of a gun, you're right. My loathing of her in MI2 spilled over to anyone that looks like her.Good catch.
Granted she's no Zoe Saldana, but I like Thandie Newton. And MI:2 has way more problems than Newton.

Did you even SEE Chronicles of Riddick? Or Mission Impossible 2? Horrific scenery chewing at it's worst.
Chronicles of Riddick was a bad movie. Not sure it was her fault.I liked MI2 and her in it quite a bit. She's also hot as hell and not bad to look at.

My film GBs- what movie should we rent next? Something you think is good, but that my wife who isn't so interested in film "as art" would enjoy (her favorite movie- Last of the Mohicans).
If you haven't already you might want to explore some of the work of David Lean.Bridge on the River KwaiLawrence of ArabiaDoctor ZhivagoYou pretty much can't lose with any of those.

yeah- big fan. but no way the wife will want to watch those... she's in the "I want my movies to entertain me in a larger than life, escapist way" camp.

Interesting that's kind of why I suggested Lean.Perhaps instead she should explore the collection of Jim Varney instead.

I'm pretty sure that the reason those movies sucked had nothing to do with Thandie Newton. Maybe try watching better movies.HTH

I'm a movie junkie, and believe me, I've seen much worse.I just find Newton to be another Stacy Dash. Pretty to look at, but otherwise annoying and useless.

Gotcha. Although I'm pretty sure Stacey Dash deserved an Oscar nomination for Mo Money. :sarcasm:

:goodposting: My response didn't include that she's not a fan of older movies either.I think Easy A would probably be right up her street at this point.

I should probably start a thread on this, but y'all are my movie pals & i'd sooner trust your advise as anyone.I have become increasingly agoraphobic ever since i got sick. It's gotten so that i lump errands together so i go out as seldom as possible. I hate the general public and come real close to biffing one of them every time im in public.Thing is, my cousin's movie (Pirates4) comes out Friday and my dashing-off of a comforting & enthusiastic e-mail has become an important part of settling his opening-day jitters. I had no trouble with crowds going to the first-day matinee of his last two movies ("Nine" & "Memoirs of a Geisha") because they werent hits, and "Chicago" was such pure bliss for all connected to it (within 10 days he went from a final-edit obsessive fear-of-failure to the hottest director in town) that the full theater wasnt a problem for me.But this is a full-blown mega-franchise 3-D, meaning both kids & yahoos. Fortunately, school isnt out til a week later, so i'm thinking of the first matinee rather than the midnight sow (does anyone know what those are like?). Unfortunately, the gal who usually comes to keep me chill at big public things isnt available. I've actually been taken into police custody twice in my life over theater beefs. I am literally dreading this like a fear-of-flying person. Any tips on avoiding scrapes and keeping my cool while remaining aware enough to write a good capsule thing to my cuz?
Well, I survived and so did the audience. The morning show was only half full and families were all in the back half and didnt bother me. Whew.First of all, 3D is COOL. This was my first experience with it since the 60s and it's really quite remarkable what they can do. I mean, i even watched the preview of the new Transformers with interest because of it, and youve no idea how unme that is. Unfortunately, it is also evil, for reasons i will spell out below.Believe me, i wishwishwish i could contradict the rabid panning of Pirates4 that Rud posted earlier but i cant, at least not nearly as much as i want to. The 3D is the problem, because it caused this movie to be not so much written as storyboarded. Each scene served only itself - used nothing which preceded it, helped not what proceded it. "Fill the screen" was the entire dictate of the picture and i'm amazed that soooo many talented people could not stem the tide of the technology to tell us a story or charm us in any way. My cousin certainly did fill the screen (though i was hoping that telling a story out on the open sea would rescue him from the chiaroscura of his previous work - alas, this is as nightish as P2&3). It's wise to give a movie like this to a choreographer, because the scenes are essentially "numbers" and no one can crowd a number with magnificence like a choreographer. And it's still a ball imagining my fey little cousin at the helm of an immensity such as this. Unfortunately, by the time of Pirates' climactic scenes, I no longer cared who won - deadly thing to do to such a charming character as Captain Jack. Oh, well.

Mission Impossible 3:

Wanted to like this one, but shouldn't have read much about it. Kept seeing fairly good reviews of it, and had mild expectations, but thought it fell flat. The only thing that kept me interested was the hope that PSH was going to be in the movie more. The opening of the movie was great, then is became an average action movie, then I thought the last 20 mins or so were terrible. I guess I should be thankful there weren't cheesy slo-mo shots with doves or anything like that. 4/10.

Get Low - a small movie but not arty. Quiet, sweet story of love, loss & longing with several tremendous performance (Duvall, Billy Murray, Spacek, great supporting players).

Chronicles of Riddick is bad on a molecular level.

Does she do subtitles? I am working on ones that have a lighter/campier tone (not exclusively) and have more of an escapist feel (not all apply).Ip Man (subbed)

Let The Right One In (subbed)

The Three Musketeers (1973)

The Four Musketeers (1974) I know they are older but these two are really fun films

Agreed. It is a thoughtful movie, I am not sure it will be escapist enough for her.The more I think about this film the more upset I am that Hollywood is taking Duval for granted by not giving him at least a best actor nomination. He was tremendous in this film.

I gotta say that while The Longest Yard (original) and Horse Feathers are strong contenders I think North Dallas Forty might be the best football movie ever made.

FWIW, Sanaa Lathan is basically a thicker Thandie Newton.

Hot Rod

Funnier than I thought it would be. The movie moved along quite fast, and was quite short, which really is ideal for most comedies (especially nonsensical ones); but unfortunately it is something a lot of comedies these days don't do and for that reason they often seem to peter out at the end. Coming in at well under 90 minutes, Hot Rod avoided this problem and was pretty strong throughout. If you're a fan of nonsensical, non-high brow humor, this film is worth a watch imo.

I saw bridesmaids with a lady friend on Tuesday, it was surprisingly funny.
Been hearing very good things about this one. Couple people say it's in the 40 Year old Virgin territory, and does a great job of balancing the gross out gags with the real people/relationships. Look forward to checking this one out.

Very underrated movie.

Everything I've heard is very positive. The trailer looked stupid. But by all accounts, this is a solid comedy.

Charlie Wilson's War

I thought this was a cool movie. Hoffman stole all the scenes. It's strange to look back at the 80's and see how allegiances have changed.

Children of Men

I liked this movie a lot. I wonder if the world would fall into chaos if world wide infertility was real.

Well put. Consistently funny from start to finish. I wish there were more nonsensical movies that weren't constructed with a redeeming resolution that isn't funny. Comedies shouldn't be required to be realistic or heart-warming or teach a lesson about life. But if they aren't they won't appeal to women so they bomb at the box office. What did Hot Rod make, a couple million? It's too bad.

According to wiki, the gross revenue was $14mil and the cost of making the film was $25mil.

Salt - 7/10

I liked it and I generally don't even like Jolie movies. Sure it was preposterous, but so are most action movies.

Black Swan - 7.5/10

Not quite the masterpiece it's made out to be. And Portman's performance is a bit overrated. I think an even more accomplished actress could have made the audience feel the "transformation" much more emotionally powerfully than she did. But overall it worked for me. I'll probably watch it again.

How to train your Dragon -

I know this was already mentioned multiple times in this thread. Really good movie my only knock (yes I know it was PG) was it was a tad intense for my 5 year old. She probably was not ready for such a type of movie with the "violent" overtones, etc.

Still she enjoyed it and most of it didn't "click" with her completely. She was a tad shocked with what happened to the kid at the end though....

Still a great movie.
