The Fifth Element

Pretty terrible sci-fi/action/adventure flick. The dialogue was terrible, pretty well every actor who had a minor role in this film was beyond terrible (whoever did the casting of the minor characters needs to never work cast for a film ever again), the plot was stupid, most of the characters in the film were idiots, and the humor was very childish. The movie reminded me a lot of Idiocracy with the sets and a lot of the characters being imbeciles. The leading actors (Bruce Willis, Milla Jovovich, Chris Tucker, Gary Oldman) were all good though and combined with some interesting sets and cool gadgets kinda saved the movie from being a complete ####storm. I never really thought Jovovich was that hot before, but she was crazy hot in this film; she should think about having her hair bright red on a permanent basis.
I can't tell you how much I loathe this movie. Ruby Rod is worse than Jar Jar Binks.
Tzzzz zzzzzzMore of a guilty pleasure than a good movie, but I always kind of liked it.

I've seen some absolute ####e movies lately... The Fourth Kind & The Rite. Not much to say about them really... other than "bad". I can't wait for the wife to stop being pregnant so I can finally pick some movies.
Dude, get the "two at once" Netflix account and stop watching that ####.
most nights, the only time I get with the wife is chilling over a movie or show... not a lot of "me" time available. But I like your thinking.
I need to introduce you to sleep deprivation. It's awesome.

:lol:I'm an architect and a dad... I've been introduced.

Anybody else watching Game of Thrones on HBO? I'm liking it a lot as a sci-fi/fantasy fan. But I never read the books (there are books, right?) and I'm afeared to the dickens of going in that thread... I"m guessing way too much :nerd: for my uppity ###.
Which thread? The book thread or the show thread. Show thread has some talk of the books and people are careful about spoilers. Also if your'e a sci-fi/fantasy fan you're already :nerd: so get over yourself... ;)
:lol:dammit.

Fourth Kind was easily the worst movie of 2009 in my book.
Do you know how that movie was conceived? Remember that author that Oprah deified and then destroyed because he plagiarized his work? That same guy started a business that fosters young writers who write novels with the expectation that they'll be optioned for the screen.
I did not know that.Well at least somebody new got the cash from this turd and not someone who had already successfully written several other turds.

Mad Men:

Just started this last night (got through 2 episodes) and was quite surprised how much I enjoyed it. The ad business interested me, so I liked that. Also have to chuckle at all the smoking in the episodes - fit with the times, it's just funny to see a doctor lighting up before the pelvic exam. The only thing I didn't like was the women/men interactions in the office. Seemed a little too much, but it's a small beef and I'll definitely continue with the show. One of the more interesting shows I've tried to watch lately.
:hifive: Love this show.
Watched another episode last last and I am hooked. Great mix of drama and humor. Just takes me by surprise that for a drama, some of the lines by the guys are almost Anchorman level. Some funny stuff. And damn his wife is beautiful.

ETA: watched the 1st season of Dexter, and thought it was just OK. Probably will continue with it, but it's nothing that I need to rush out and get. I think Breaking Bad will be the next show, and we also have In Treatment at the store, and that show has piqued my interest.

I love Mad Men for many reasons (the humor, the writing, the acting, etc.). But primarily, I love it for the subtext. The show is assuming the audience has the ability to read between the lines - to understand what happening without every tedious scintilla having to be explained to death. Dexter is cool, but I think it's greatly elevated by Michael C. Hall. Awesome concept, for sure. But I wouldn't watch it without such a great lead actor.

Breaking Bad is phenomenal.

Gentleman Broncos

Continuing to test my theory that a good trailer makes a good movie despite bad reviews. So far I am 2-2 with this theory. This trailer was hilarious, but the movie is just too weird and too disgusting to watch. I did laugh out loud a few times. But for every laugh there's a moment that makes you nauseous. Sam Rockwell is hilarious, as usual. However, I almost turned it off when the giant snake took a dump on his owner.
Wow, I was actually going to watch this sometime too. Thanks for the heads up. Nothing worse then a bad poop joke.
It's not total garbage. There are some laughs, as I mentioned. But the gross out stuff is REALLY GROSS. Plus, I know this director is fascinated by ugly people - and that's fine. But he's not just content with casting ugly people: one major character here constantly makes really ridiculous faces. This director is a bit enamored with his own kink.
It just occurred to me that there's a bit of Peter Jackson's "Bad Taste" in this movie.
Caught this earlier in the week and I loved it. It was one of the more inventive and creative films I've seen in a while. I especially liked the horrible sci-fi movie scenes. This is going to be a cult/classic for and I am sure I will see it numerous more times.

Incindies

It takes a seemingly familiar plot device- Twin adult children receive letters at the reading of their dead mother's will. The tasks presented to them unfold in an intriguing complex, and fresh (and sometimes brutal) mystery tale. A French Canadian production set in Canada and (mostly) Lebannon (I think).

If it hasn't been mentioned already "Temple Grandin" was one of the best movies I've seen in a while.

Never been a fan of Claire Danes and was surprised she won an Emmy this past year. That was until I watched Temple Grandin. She was exceptional as was Julia Ormand who won an Emmy as well.

This movie would have been a big Oscar contender had it been released in theaters first. A must see if you have an autistic kid as well.
Temple Grandin is a great flick. I had to see if this one had been mentioned in this thread (obviously it has).A truly interesting movie. Danes was awesome and I agree could have easily won and Oscar had this been made for the big screen. 4.7/5

Another great HBO movie is Something the Lord Made which is also based on a true story (first open heart surgery) and has a surprisingly solid performance by rapper Mos Def. Highly recommend it - especially if you like medicine. 4.7/5
Wife and I just watched Temple Grandin for the first time last not. What a fantastic and fascinating movie. ETA: Claire Danes - wow. I had no clue that was her. It was one of those 'god where do I know her from' moments.

Yeah, Mila is smokin' hot. But this movie is a mess. I haven't seen 12 Monkeys in a long time, but it seems like these two would make for an apt double feature.
How so? Because theyre both Willis sci-fi's?Dont know where you were going with that, but IMO 12 Monkeys is 1 of the best sci-fi films, period.

Chalk me up with The Fifth Element guilty pleasure fans. I couldnt even remember Chris Tucker's character's name from that movie, hardly remember him having more than 5 minutes screen time (that vid that Dufresne linked is pretty much his big dialogue scene IIRC), so that instantly makes him less annoying than Jar Jar Binks for me. Sure that Tucker character is pretty annoying, but I always thought it just further addressed the cheesy side of sci-fi that T5E is all about and makes in enjoyable.

Chalk me up as a fan of TG. Well worth watching. She has a very unique view of the world and she's a snappy dresser too.

I'd go with:12 Monkeys/Butterfly Effect

or

5th Element/Serenity

If you're looking for a double feature.

It's been a long time since I've seen either movie. So I might feel a little different today. But my lasting impression of both movies is that they are creative - but extremely scattershot. I think chaos is sometimes confused with brilliance.

Well, 12 Monkeys involves time travel so of course its going to be scattered to a degree. Its predominantly (>98%) spent in the past though, whether Willis is there at the time or not. I understand what youre saying on chaos, but that never struck me as to why I thought it was great from the first watch. Pretty much everything about it stood out to me.

I really couldnt compare the 2 movies at all outside of both having Bruce Willis as the lead, which is why I asked.

12 Monkeys is Terry Gilliam's best piece of work by wide margin for me.

While cleary 12 Monkeys is sci-fi, 15 years later it feels just as fresh and even more realistic these days.Like I said before, 5th Element takes itself much less seriously than your standard sci-fi, to the point of fantasy almost, but it works (kind of like Brazil, to a degree).I dont disagree theyd be a decent double feature, but 12 Monkeys >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> 5th Element

12 Monkeys is a much better film. It's also really heavy, a nice light hearted action/sci-fi thing that doesn't take itself seriously is a good compliment to that.Besides Mila >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Madeline Stowe

I don't like the Gilliam thing where everybody wears large, bulky clothing. Could do without that little piece of Gilliamism although in general I enjoy his movies.

Once again, :hifive: I have no interest in Monty Python whatsoever, not a fan of Brit comedy so thats obviously a big factor. Really the only other movie besides those 4 that could crack the top 3 Gilliam for me would be The Fisher King.Ive only seen Brazil once. Im sure it seemed even more out there 25 years ago, and I enjoyed it for its oddball nature, but I'd never put it over 12 Monkeys.

Are we getting into another debate on who should be president of the titless freaks committee again?(i still  leeloo though)

Super 8

I was really looking forward to this, so I went out and caught the midnite showing last night. I was hoping that it was going to recreate the magic of the old Speilberg/Amblin movies I remember so fondly. The entire film felt like an homage to those films, attempting to catch the art direction, tone, and focus, and doing commendable job. It worked out ok as a movie and I pretty much liked it, but it did not have nearly the impact its predecessors had. Maybe that's because I have changed so much I can no longer appreciate it the way I once had, or maybe it was just not in the same league as the earlier ones.

My main beefs were: the father of the protagonist was just too non-stop of a ####/jerk. I see that a lot in movies now, a family member being portrayed absolutely black and then at the end of the film they are really just a super guy. A little grey in the second act would be helpful. Also, most of the scares were when the director cheated with sound at deafening levels. Its one thing to scare me because something pops out of the darkness, its another thing to jolt me out of my seat with sheer noise. Finally I did not like the casting of the boy director. A fat kid was fine, but couldn't he have a little bit of charisma?

Overall, pretty good, despite my long complaints, I just had such high hopes. Go in with lowered expectations and you should enjoy.

3/5 stars

Abrams was on Kimmel last nite & he sounded homage-conscious even talking about working with Spielberg. If HE can be overwhelmed.... I'm sure, as you say, one's wonder-quotient has a lot to do with appreciation of movies like this, but I usually end up applauding JJA's attempt to be fresh, even if the sum total is only a minor plus.

Saw Super 8 this afternoon as well.

It's Jurassic Park/E.T./Stand By Me rolled into one. A little too much of everything but the monster.

3/5

Hall Pass:

Watched this last night and had 0 expectations. Had a few laugh out loud moments for me where is seemed like the Farrelly Brothers still had something left, but overall it just ended up being OK. A lot of the jokes/laughs felt forced and fell short for me. Probably would have been funnier if they had more with their friends, and didn't feel the need to say 'hall pass' 200 times in the movie. 5/10

Edit to change the rating. After thinking about it, I don't know if I'd watch it again which puts it a 5 for me.

Saw a couple this week.

Tron Legacy 3/5 mainly based on great sound and good effects, average story

Buried 2.5/5 kept you interested, decent story, must have been a cheap movie to produce

The Trip

Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon travel through Northern England reviewing fine restaurants and working on their voice impressions. Hilarious. This hasn't been released in theaters yet, but my British pal bought it from Amazon.uk and had it shipped here. It's going to be packaged as a film in the states, I believe. But the form I saw it in was a six part series. Highly recommended for Coogan fans.

TRAILER
with the chatter about this "movie", i decided to throw myself into episdoes of "saxondale". watched the first one last night. it's not hysterical but still very funny. coogan does nice work and i can see the love he has for the character.
I just started that myself on Netflix on-line. Pretty funny. So far, I can say without hesitation that Coogan is comic gold.
i am loving the series. i finished season one already and think it's dynamite. lots of great characters and very much in the comedy of manners style. tommy is pretty awesome as characters go.

Saw it as well. A well done throwback but I don't know, a little lacking in soul I guess. Not much explanation for a lot of what was happening, and the ending was pretty rushed. Kids liked it though, and it was a fine two hours of entertainment either way.For a film taking place in '79 I thought they were a little early on the Rubik's Cube and the Walkman.. sure enough those things existed but not in this country yet.

Watched Bobby Fischer Against the World For a once upon a time chess team :nerd: like myself, I found it very interesting. Both Fischer himself and the all too brief discussion of how many chess geniuses lose their minds when faced with the real world. When you are a genius at analyzing every possible move and fates being determined dozens of moves in advance, many have trouble turning that off in the real world.

Sweet. I've only seen one episode. Need to crank it up again.

Considering the movie, if it kept you interested you dont think it deserves a higher rating??I liked it a lot, was basically non-stop suspense. I could see how some people would get bored since the movie takes place in 1 scene/area basically, but if its keeps your interest, I dont see how you wouldnt enjoy it.

Right?
I put Baron Von Munchausen ahead of all of those. I like 12 Monkeys a lot, but preferred la Jette. And yeah- Holy Grail... c'mon- how can you NOT be a Monty Python fan?

Battle: Los Angeles

This this is exactly the type of movie that I should hate, but I found myself thinking it was alright. Take the stupidity of Independence Day, add the camerawork of Cloverfield, and maybe throw in the street combat scenes of a movie like Blackhawk Down, and that is what this movie was. I think I enjoyed this is one in a "so bad it's good" way that Hooter liked Drive Angry. Don't get me wrong- the characters are cliche, the lines are bad, and the plot holes are huge.

HTF did the aliens get their huge 'command center' buried underground in the middle of LA without anybody noticing? Has is always been there?
As far as empty calorie popcorn movie, I had a decent time. After about the 15min mark and we meet all the people is was just one long battle scene for the rest of the movie. It was dumb and about 20 mins too long, but I had fun with it. 6/10

I put Baron Von Munchausen ahead of all of those. I like 12 Monkeys a lot, but preferred la Jette.

And yeah- Holy Grail... c'mon- how can you NOT be a Monty Python fan?
Muchausen is maybe my favorite of his. I do think "The Fisher King" is a better film largely due to the vastly superior performances showcased in it. i'm beginning to think "brazil" is criminally underrated and likely worth revisiting for re-evaluation. Gilliam's most personal - by his own admission - film "Tideland" is unwatchable. Just a total mess. if you are recommending "la jetee" then i need to check it out.

If any of you 12 Monkeys fans finds yourself in Philly, you should do a tour of Eastern State Penitentiary where the movie was filmed. They do an interesting thing with a computer generated show that creates a very noisy environment. I won't give away too much. It's a cool tour.

La Jetee (thanks for the spelling correction) is definitely worth checking out. But I'll be honest- I haven't seen either in almost 20 years and my memory might be colored by the self-important-snob-grad-school-goggles I used to view them... Jetee was all the rage during my MArch (people based projects on it, IIRC) and I seem to recall thinking the Gilliam version too pat and Americanized in comparison. I'm sure the original is on Youtube- it's not feature-length. yeah... here it is.

That's just how I described it - Black Hawk Down meets Independence Day.

tried watching "killer of sheep" last night. it's one of those films that film enthusiasts mention as a classic and largely unknown to most people. it was his MFA thesis at UCLA film school back in the 70's. i tried to watch it but the sound mix sucked. i was having to adjust the volume scene to scene really. i gave up after about 20 minutes.

after finishing season one of "saxondale", i started "party down". my wife lived in LA for years - giving acting a go - before moving to NYC where i met her. she says this show hits a little too close to home. it's very funny. lizzy caplan is just my type.

Buried 2.5/5 kept you interested, decent story, must have been a cheap movie to produce
:goodposting: I thought it was great.

Just Go With It: Not bad. Sandler's funny voice/childish jokes just didn't work in this movie though. Predictable story and not many laugh out loud moments but I found myself enjoying it. 3/5

The Adjustment Bureau: Oof. Not good at all. Big Matt Damon fan and he was solid as usual in this. I liked the concept of the movie but the execution was extremely lacking. Every time they tried to explain what was happening it seemed so forced. Anthony Mackie was just awful. It felt like it needed to be a bit longer to flesh everything out properly. 1.5/5

i saw this is in the theater and was really surprised by how bad it was. its failure was across the board for me.

The mechanism wasn't important. It was a MacGuffin to move the Romeo & Juliet story along. The mood was what was more important and I thought it pulled it off in spades.
