Hugo....Liked it a lot. Looking back in here, I understand the complaints about Hugo not being sure what it was supposed to be, but it really drew me in with its charm and enchanting setting, time period, etc to where those detractions didnt get in the way of my enjoyment. The 3D effects were excellent and in the same ballpark as Avatar. The first 30-40 minutes I found to be a little slow, both with the story and character development, but it kept me interested by focusing on the visuals during this time. Looking back, I think this was a wise decision because it really drew me into the film and allowed it to fully display how beautiful it was while also allowing that to somewhat take a backseat as the focus shifts more to the story over the last 80 minutes. Thought Kingsley was superb and how his story unfolded was the thing that most interested me with Hugo. I also see how people may have been turned off or sidetracked by Scorsese's "ode" to the history of film in the latter half, but I loved it and that was just another part that got to me with its charm. Thought the 3D, although less technical, was very well utilized in these sequences as well. Actually, my favorite part of the whole movie was likely Kingsley's flashback as we finally found out how his life truly played out and what happened to him. Thought Sacha Baron Cohen was surprisingly good even if his role was a charicature of itself, and Chloe Moretz also flashed some talent. Really my only complaints may be casting Emily Mortimer and Jude Law, yet only giving each a handful of lines, but thats about as minor as it comes. I cant say I have much interest to see it again, but I wouldnt have expected that going in anyway. Definitely was worth seeing in 3D and I feel youre missing out if you watch it otherwise, but between that and the cinematography/art direction, an interesting and charming story, and very good acting, its worth the 1 watch. Very deserving of its Oscar wins (art direction, cinematography, visual effects, sound editing, sound mixing) and noms (best film, director, costume design, adapted screenplay, original score)....4.2/5
