The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

Not sure if the Oscars has set a previous precedent of not nominating remakes for big awards, but this movie was fantastic and should have been nominated for Best Picture imo. Rooney Mara was phenomenal in the lead, and I thought Daniel Craig was great as well besides his poor attempt at a Swedish accent. Usually for movies over 2 and a half hours long I'm checking the clock every once in a while waiting for it to be over, but I didn't have that problem with this film. Fincher makes some excellent films. Probably my favourite film of 2011 that I've seen so far.
I will probably ask just about everybody who posts about the movie - did you see the original and/or read the books?

 the movie.Did not read the books yet.. but they are next after I finish the Dean Koontz book I am reading.

I have no interest in watching the "original" movie as I don't care for sub-titled movies.

I didn't read the books. I saw the original movie. The American version was far superior.

I'm not going to claim it's the best movie of the year, but I think it deserved at least a best picture nomination.

Never Let Me Go

Wow. What a cool movie. I feel like I found a jewel here. I've never heard anyone mention this film, and I don't recall many critics mentioning Never Let Me Go on their 2010 top 10 lists. This is a beautifully photographed movie with a thought provoking premise. I really don't want to give anything away. All I'll say is it's set in an alternate universe. If you must,

. It's very good, but the trailer gives away a lot of surprises.

i saw this in the theater about 2 weeks ago. i liked it but wasn't wild about it for whatever reason. both craig and mara were good. but the smaller roles played by robin wright, plummer, skarsgard and richardson were pretty flat. fincher did good work telling a sprawling story with a lot of moving parts though. he seems to have respected the work enough to resist the urge to over do it stylistically. i have not read any of the books but did see the original.

Think I wrote this up when I saw it somewhat recently... but I can't remember my take- I think it was an *almost*.

Didn't read the books and didn't see the original trilogy of films.

"Nyet! He beet me. Straight up. Pey hem. Pay the man his moneey."

Great movie. I'm still not sure why the bookie gets so upset at the end when Mike wins. Granted, he could have gotten paid more money from having Mike as a poker slave, but let's be a little real. He did no work at all, and got paid his money without having to exert any energy except one little bathroom scene with Worm, and Teddy KGB would have likely been the one to siphon off Mike's cash, not him. Just struck me as odd. Forced drama for no reason.

One of the better books I've read in years. Would seem to be a particularly hard book to capture on film due to all the inner-dialogue. But the movie turned out pretty good. Love Carey Mulligan. Think it got reviewed fairly well and seemed like a movie that just missed many top 10 lists.

I'm not saying the movie is outstanding, but it's certainly good enough to where I doubt there were 10 better movies in 2010.

According to wiki, it was on at least 13 critics Top Ten lists of 2010. Multiple critics had it as the #1 film of the year. Personally I thought it was fairly good, I wouldn't put it in my top 10 of 2010 though.

I would have a hard time putting it in my top 10: True Grit, Inception, Black Swan, 127 Hours, The King's Speech, The Fighter, The Social Network, Shutter Island, Blue Valentine and Winter's Bone. Probably in the next 5 though.

Those are outstanding films, so I see your point. Although I found Never Let Me Go to be an overall better experience than Black Swan.

In a current state of mind, this shows how much 2011 sucked and/or how great 2010 was.

I read the book and thought the movie gave away too many surprises too early. Part of the great build up with the book was figuring out what the kids' role was, and that was taken care of in after 20mins or so in the movie. To be fair, I didn't make it much more than 40 mins or so, and I plan to revisit it soon. Keep seeing it on a lot of top 10 lists from that year, so I feel I should give it another watch.

Really liked this year in movies. I didn't like True Grit and was only 'meh' on King's Speech. My list would be similar but would probably start with Rabbit Hole and Kick-### replacing those 2 on the list. I need to revisit my list from 2011, and I am still watching them as they trickle out, but the only ones that really are sticking out to me so far that I loved as much as the ones from 2010 are Drive, 50/50, and Martha Marcy May Marlene. I am going to try to get to The Descendants, Melancholia, Young Adult, and My Week With Marilyn this weekend. Next week it looks like Girl With the Dragon Tattoo and The Muppets come out.

My thinking why Grama got so upset was that he used to run with Mike and Worm back in the day and he was the toady of the group, always getting ragged on, etc. He was enjoying making Worm and Mike suffer for the way they used to make him feel inferior and was looking forward to it continuing when it appeared Mike was screwed going up against Teddy. Mike winning and paying everything off was him realizing Mike got the better of him again.

I can't make you like the movie, but I think it has plenty to say. The metaphors abound.

Hugo....Liked it a lot. Looking back in here, I understand the complaints about Hugo not being sure what it was supposed to be, but it really drew me in with its charm and enchanting setting, time period, etc to where those detractions didnt get in the way of my enjoyment. The 3D effects were excellent and in the same ballpark as Avatar. The first 30-40 minutes I found to be a little slow, both with the story and character development, but it kept me interested by focusing on the visuals during this time. Looking back, I think this was a wise decision because it really drew me into the film and allowed it to fully display how beautiful it was while also allowing that to somewhat take a backseat as the focus shifts more to the story over the last 80 minutes. Thought Kingsley was superb and how his story unfolded was the thing that most interested me with Hugo. I also see how people may have been turned off or sidetracked by Scorsese's "ode" to the history of film in the latter half, but I loved it and that was just another part that got to me with its charm. Thought the 3D, although less technical, was very well utilized in these sequences as well. Actually, my favorite part of the whole movie was likely Kingsley's flashback as we finally found out how his life truly played out and what happened to him. Thought Sacha Baron Cohen was surprisingly good even if his role was a charicature of itself, and Chloe Moretz also flashed some talent. Really my only complaints may be casting Emily Mortimer and Jude Law, yet only giving each a handful of lines, but thats about as minor as it comes. I cant say I have much interest to see it again, but I wouldnt have expected that going in anyway. Definitely was worth seeing in 3D and I feel youre missing out if you watch it otherwise, but between that and the cinematography/art direction, an interesting and charming story, and very good acting, its worth the 1 watch. Very deserving of its Oscar wins (art direction, cinematography, visual effects, sound editing, sound mixing) and noms (best film, director, costume design, adapted screenplay, original score)....4.2/5

This Must Be The Place

Interestingly odd little dramedy starring Sean Penn as a soft spoken Robert Smith type retired rocker. Not sure if it was because I was slightly inebriated, but I thought the plot kinda jumped all over the place in the middle/end portions. Still, had some very funny bits and some great lines throughout, and I thought Penn was excellent in his bizarre role. David Byrne also makes a cameo appearance/performance. It had some of the pieces to be great, but erratic plot in the 2nd half of the film held it back. Still, one of the more interesting films of 2011 that I liked overall.

I did swap out Kick-### for Winter's Bone at the last minute. I forgot about Rabbit Hole, that was good as well. There also aren't any animated (Tangled and How to Train Your Dragon) or foreign (Udaan, The Troll Hunter, and I Saw The Devil) movies in the list and I'd have those in my top 20.

The Horseman

Unsettled by his teenage daughter's untimely and suspicious death, a vengeful father sets out on a purposeful road trip across rural Queensland, Australia, to find out who killed his little girl -- and to make them pay.

This was pretty good if you have the stomach for it.

Ip Man: I know it this was reviewed in here previously, I can't find it with a search though. Regardless, Ip Man is a Chinese kung fu movie (loosely) based on the life of the famous Yip Man, a master of the Wing Chun style of martial arts who trained several famous martial artists, including Bruce Lee. Although very heavy-handed with the Chinese nationalism, this was an engrossing film, with a great story and some of the most spectacular fight scenes I've seen. I'd strongly recommend it to martial arts fans.

Watched Criminal on Netflix streaming. Really liked this movie and I wish I had watched it sooner. Reilly did a great job, but even more impressive was Diego Luna. I have to say, I did not see the ending coming at all.
Just saw this movie. Very good. I'm a sucker for any con movie but most of them are terrible.
Saw this over the weekend. Was an ok movie that had a GREAT ending, which I also did not see coming.

This was pretty crummy but it was an interesting performance which made it entertaining enough to sit through

Well, China - for example. People born into a life they will probably never transcend. A life of slavery where there are few choices.

Game Change has its own thread but it's already full of political bickering. I thought it was really good, and don't doubt that it is also 100% true. Woody Harrelson and Julianne Moore are excellent. Really kind of sets things straight as far as the decisions the McCain camp was making, which threw a lot of us for a loop at the time. Also paints Palin in a more positive light than she's been enjoying lately.

Hannah

Really enjoyed this movie. Not a lot of new ground broken, but the action sequences are very good. I like The Chemical Brothers, so naturally the soundtrack is excellent.

Yes. And Cate Blanchett's always good.
I actually didn't like her in this- thought the accent was distracting and ham-handed. But somehow, Eric Bana's accent didn't bother me.
