Finally saw The Ides of March. On board with average, and "meh"

I'm over Clooney . I think the last movie I saw him in that I didn't think was overrated was Burn After Reading

I think Gosling's a promising actor and he sure is dreamy, but has he done a good movie yet at all?
Besides Half Nelson, Lars and the Real Girl, The Believer, Blue Valentine, The United States of Leland, and Drive I can't think of any.
Not to mention Fracture, All Good Things, and Murder By Numbers were all pretty good. I havent seen The Notebook, but all his movies that Ive seen I think are good or better, and Im guessing The Gangster Squad will be awesome.
When I saw this movie ten years ago or whatever it was, I thought it might have been the worst movie I had ever sat through
For a high school murder mystery I thought it was decent

I think Gosling is one of the best going today but it is true that he doesn't seem to stretch himself too much in his roles. He played the characters from Lars, Blue Valentine, Drive, Ides of March, Notebook, Half Nelson, US of Leland etc is a very similar manner, which isn't a bad thing but I would like to see if he can bring something else to a role.
As much as I like him and as great as I think he is, Id have to agree. Although Fracture was different for him as a hotshot lawyer and in All Good Things he's a crossdresser.JGL has had a lot more entertaining roles/characters

Of all the ones I listed, I probably would start with a different one. Lars is the oddest/quirkiest of the bunch. (still loved the movie, though)

I liked Lars but I have to agree it was nothing like I was expecting. I would probably start with Half Nelson.

caught "the raid: redemption" tonight in the theater. really, really good if you are in the mood for that kind of thing. tense and thrilling pretty much throughout. terrific fight sequences done by a game cast and crew. all parties seemed to know what they wanted to show and do. plot held together too. it's pretty badass really.
Wow. This was much better than I expected and my expectations were pretty high.I've seen a few movies of this ilk in the past couple of years that were very good. This one beats the snot of them, gouges out their eyes and rams a rusty pipe through their larynx. Probably the best choreographed film I've ever seen.4.5/5 stars

I thought Half Nelson was a very good movie. He's no Jonah Hill, but he could be one of the best of his generation if he starts showing some more range. The roles he has had were very different, but he played them pretty much the same. He definitely has the longest face in Hollywood.
Half Nelson was very good. Lars and the Real Girl was good. Many people think Blue Valentine is a very good film (not sure about that myself). Personally I think Drive was one of the best films from 2011 but I know that inspires a lot of disagreement. He was also very good in Remember the Titans and that character was a departure from what we normally see from him.
Lars was pretty darn good, but not real good. I really liked Drive a lot when I saw it in the theater and at the time considered it a strong candidate as a top 10, but I watched the DVD with my wife and it left me much more lukewarm about it. I do not remember his role in RtT, I will need to re-watch that. I really like Gosling a lot, I just have not seen much versatility.

Mission Impossible: Exactly what you'd expect. Nothing more, nothing less. Could have been a half hour shorter. Would have probably been more entertaining with Jonah Hill instead of Cruise. 2.5/5

:goodposting: Something I seen one time five years ago, and the character still pops in my head every once in a while. One of those films that just sticks with you.

Into the Abyss:

Herzog's new documentary about a death row inmate, the crimes committed, and a look at the death penalty. Dunno, came away feeling underwhelmed by this one. Seems like the complaints that people have about Mr. Malick I am starting to have about Herzog's docs - seems like he meanders too much sometimes and I left the movie wondering what I was supposed to take from it. There were some scenes I liked - mostly the interviews with people who are with the inmates on the last day of their life, but overall this one wasn't as strong as I was expecting. Not sure if others of his are like this, but seems to me he was asking too many leading questions or seemingly answering things for the interview subjects as well. Still worth a look, just temper expectations.

Loved the character, and the movie finishes on a very genuine, emotionally satisfying note.

I'll have to give it another go. I saw it on DVD and maybe I was distracted or something and did not give it a fair watch.

The reason I liked the movie so much is how the town rallies around Gosling's character. It reminded me of true stories where small towns rally around mentally challenged teens at sporting events. It's cool to see goodness on such a large scale.

This is what stayed with me as well. I specifically remember recommending it to a couple people at the office when I had first seen it. I think all they got out of it was that it was about a creep doing a blow up doll. They haven't made much eye contact sense and I've also quit recommending movies to rubes.

they were right not to trust someone with such a poor historical perspective of retail and naivete concerning the incredible trendsucking, frontrunning & spoiled behavior involved in forum drafts.

Thanks for that wikkid, I'm still cracking up.

I guess I just can't comprehend the correlation between "history" and "pop culture".

They put a few thousand posts of effort into it, let them have their fun.

Agreed. Going in I was thinking it would be a zany comedy, I was pleased with the choices they made instead of going that route.

that's why i only judge anymore. i useta get too wrapped up in it myself, then realized the real fun was pissing folks off with wildly inconsistent rankings. i've just built more cred as a genuine lunatic than you.

I didn't see him as a creep at all. There are a lot of lonely, sad people in the world.

Exactly. The movie could have been very dumb as a screwball comedy.

Revanche - 2009 Best foreign film nominee. I really enjoyed this would be revenge flick. The director takes time to flesh out the main characters and their relationships before moving onto the turning point and from there it becomes a very tense slow burn as the audience is left wondering if or when. There is an economy of well placed dialogue and no soundtrack but it is a beautifully executed tense drama. I very highly recommend this one for the fans of foreign film.

Poltergeist - This 1983 spooky thriller holds up a lot better than I expected. The effects are for the most part quite good with a few exceptions and the characters do make the occasionally ridiculously stupid decision (GET OUT OF THE DAMN HOUSE YOU IDIOTS!). But otherwise this is still a fun, creepy movie with a few moments that would really mess with any parents mind.

Plus it has Hulk on a horse which is undeniably all kinds of awesome.

Footloose 2011 - Yes I did. Let me just say the I was very good friends with the son of the DoP of the original Footloose and I must have watched that 10 times back in the 80s. I really had no choice but to eventually check out the update. It's not very good. While they give many solid nods to the original they miss on pretty much everything else. I think someone in this thread pointed out that they really took out the fire and brimstone aspect of Lithgow's character out of this film and it just had a very sanitized feel to the whole thing. There was no real antagonist. Anyway I have already written more than this film deserves, except to add that Andie McDowell looks surprisingly good.

The Return - Excellent Russian film about two young brothers whose father returns home without explanation after being gone for over a decade. The father takes the children with him, again without explanation, on a camping trip. The film moves along the path of exploring the evolution of their relationship in a compressed time frame but at the same time it has a very sinister feel as the audience is wondering why was this stern, borderline abusive father gone for so long and what are his intentions now that he has returned.

The acting from the children is a little uneven but seems to become increasingly strong as the movie progresses and the father has a real sinister James Russo feel to him. This is not a difficult film to follow but it is very difficult to figure out exactly where it is going and when it finally arrives I must say I was absolutely shocked.

Another high recommendation for the foreign film fans.

Sweet find. This sounds very intriguing. I'm going to try to find time for this tonight.

Just watched "OldBoy" yesterday. Great movie, but seriously effed up.

And I am freaking out because a couple of ants just crawled over my hand

You should have followed that up with suggesting Cronenburg's Crash.

POM Wonderful Presents: The Greatest Movie Ever Sold-

This one had me laughing. Such a great concept - a doc about product placement and advertising funded solely on product placement and advertising. Just like Super Size Me, Spurlock tends to go more for the entertainment and less the education factor for his movies. Still fun watching him pitch the movie to execs, and watch some of the process and thinking behind companies getting their brands out there. Probably more for people who don't realize how much this is going on in shows and movies, but it's still a fun watch. I know I am going to start using Mane and Tail exclusively now.

Just watched Cropsey. Not much to see here. Documentary surounding missing kids on Staten Island back in the 70's and 80's. Not much to see here. 2/5
Saw this too. You're being generous. What a convoluted mess this thing was. Could have been much better but it meandered around like a drunk with a club foot in a fun house.

The Darkest Hour: I don't think I've ever had lower expectations for a movie... and yet it still didn't live up to them. Most.Plot-holes.Ever. 0/5
Really? I put this in my queue because every bluray I rented had this trailer and I thought it looked kinda cool.
Beyond horrible. I enjoy cheesy sci-fi flicks so I figured this might be bearable... hell no. I kind of want someone in here to watch to share in its awfulness.
Ok, so I started watching this last night thinking "it's couldn't be as bad as the FBG's say, right?" and man was I wrong. I only got 20 minutes into it before I was disgusted and turned it off. I have no idea where they spent the $30M budget.- the cinematography is beyond horrible and it looks like it was shot on video

- I've never seen worse writing, seriously it's like they tried to come up with the lamest lines they possibly could

- the acting is horrible - I couldn't believe that it was the same Emile Hirsch who did Into the Wild

Early Cabin in the Woods reviews:

"The premise, execution and laughs see it through. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and The Evil Dead are the most obvious touchstones, though the closest comparison is probably Evil Dead II, which so deftly manages to blend laughs and frights."

Awesome, completely awesome. Drag Me to Hell had it's moments but I've been missing a film like this since the original Scream. Evil Dead 2 is one of my all time favorites.

Margin Call

IMO, this was a brilliant film and well worth a viewing. I've never heard about it until recently. However, it has a top notch cast, and they deliver.

I thought it was on the cusp of Top 10 for '11, but T Kibitzer strongly disagreed..I am really looking forward to Cabin in the Hill or whatever opening Friday. THe advance word has me more anticipatory than I would usually be for a horror film.

 You didn't even make it to the bad parts.

I've rewatched the new Star Trek a few times since I first saw it a few pages back. The more I see it and let the characters grow on me the more I'm thinking that it is close to being one of the best Trek movies made. It isn't as good as Khan, as I still consider that to be the best sci-fi movie ever made and a top 10 all time overall movie, but it just might be second to it. It easily is better than any of the TNG attempts, especially the last two.

I find myself wanting the next movie now.

I still put it behind 2, 3, and 4.The only reason I don't rank it higher is because the villain is kind of wimpy and his motivation is flimsy at best.

I would agree that the bad guy was overall not that great. And there were too many plot holes - like the supernova supposidely destroying the galaxy but only getting Romulus (I mean, he could have went to the old Romulus and told them what was going to happen and destroying the Federation doesn't change the fact that the star is going to go supernova in the future) but I think the movie plays better as a character setup of the crew more than anything else and there needed to be a bad guy that (1) was beatable by young Kirk only with a cheating death scenario and (2) changed the timeline so they could venture out from the standard mythos of the old storyline.Basically, I'm ok with the bad guy because he isn't important to me. The casting was pretty close to perfect for all the roles, the little nuggets they stuck in that played homage to the original cast were well done and I have found myself not upset at all at having new people in the roles. So, it worked for me.

When it comes to 3 and 4 I find myself ignoring large sections of those movies. I still don't like that they brought Spock back from the dead. 2 was too perfect to basically revamp in 3 and 4 was a comedy for 90% of it.

They brought Spock back because Nimoy changed his mind. He thought he was done with the character but halfway through Khan he changed his mind.I like the comedy of Trek IV. "They like you very much. But they are not the hell your whales."

:goodposting: McCoy: My God, man. Do you want an acute case on your hands? This woman has immediate postprandial, upper-abdominal distention. Now, out of the way! Get out of the way!

[They enter the operating room]

Kirk: What did you say she has?

McCoy: Cramps.

I actually didn't know that. I still didn't like it. He must have really changed his mind because he's still doing it.

Agree here. I remembered the first movie as being "meh." But I recently re-watched it with my son, and enjoyed it a lot.
