The Cabin In The Woods...After reading the early reviews, mostly from here, I was convinced I had to see this now. It only needs 1 word, Awesome. Glad I saw it without seeing the trailer. While Im not sure how much that gave away, the few commercials I saw kept it very minimal all things considered. The slow reveal of reasoning behind the organization is timely, and the end result was still surprising and great. Richard Jenkins and Bradley Whitford were cast perfectly, and after seeing it, I dont think I can picture anyone else in those roles (Jenkins possibly deserves getting nominated for this over The Visitor ;) )...At first I wasnt sure if I bought into the stoner guy (seemed over the top at first), but he was a great character. Only complaint is that when #### gets chaotic in the end, I wish they extended it an extra 10 minutes somehow. Time will tell if this becomes the horror movie of this era or remembered as much, but it deserves to be. I highly doubt it will be huge on a Saw or Scream level, but it should be. An undoubtable cult classic that I hope gets more recognition now/early...As far as horror goes, an easy...5/5

What a fantastic show. I've only seen one episode, but this is excellent. My wife said to me, "This just shows how bad Mad Men is becoming," and I can't disagree.
:kicksrock: I got through the couple couple seasons and really dug it, but something was slowing me down during the first few episodes of Season 3. I was hoping that it was just a case of me plowing through them too quickly.
Don't ruin my buzz.
 Weren't we both talking about the downturn that Mad Men took?

I have this gut feeling I should go see this on my day off Tuesday before I hear too much about it or stumble across the trailer. Nothing like seeing a movie by yourself on a Tuesday afternoon.
Im more of a sunday night movie theater guy, but yeah, do it.

Ah yes. I misread your post. Throughout the Mad Men series, there have always been weak points. Don's trip to Cali went on far too long, for example. It wasn't until this new season where it seemed like the show has lost its way.

I have a long flight to italy coming up in may and was thinking of ripping some dvds to my ipad.

Ive seen all my dvds a 100 times im sure but i never watch the audio commentaries. This could be a good opportunity to do so. What are some of the better ones out there?

Burned through two seasons of Justified over the past few weeks. Thought season 2 was suppossed to be better. Waste of time. Show sucks and I'm an idiot for watching two seasons.

Mission Impossible 4:

It's a Mission Impossible movie. Thought the last 1/2 saved it a bit, but I was starting to check my watch and debate if I was going to continue with the movie during the first 45 mins or so. Really didn't like Simon Pegg in this one and felt the humor didn't fit in the movie. (or maybe I am just done with the goofy sidekick action movie guy). I would say that it is the 2nd best in the series, I guess I am just not sure how good that is. I really miss the tone and feel of the first one, but could take or leave the others. 6/10

Eastbound & Down:

Finally got around to watching the first 3 episodes of Season 1 last night. Just brilliantly offensive. Don't know what took me so long to get around to this one, but I am sure that I will get through the first couple seasons in short order.

Sherlock Holmes (the new one): Uh, not sure what it is but I just didn't like it (or the first one). Found myself trying to fall asleep halfway through (and I did). I'm a RDJ fan but his shtick just doesn't work in these IMO. 2/5.

Seriously? I love this show. The characters are fantastic and extremely well played. I came in late to watching episodes this season and watched most out of order, but I did not even care. Just spending an hour with these characters transcends the storyline.

I thought the introductions of the two "twists" Sherlock needed to save his life were particularly clumsy.

Love Downey and love Ritchie. But this series should have been better.

Not a commentary per-se, but the "Making of" disc of The Abyss is my favorite such title. It's amazing what the actors did to make that movie.

Usual Suspects has a good one, if I recall correctly. I don't think Tarantino does commentaries, does he?

The Kid With a Bike

Another very human film by the Belgian Dardenne brothers. Tone and theme similar to their other works (The Promise, the Infant. The Son, etc.). Star quality performances from relative unknowns and a simple plot exploring the human condition in the daily travails of life. Very good, but not as compelling to me as some of their other work, I like it a bit less than most reviews I read. Maybe they set my expectation too high or such a small film. I would still definitely recommend it, but really not much of a reason to see on the big screen.

3.6/5 stars

Yeah. It was kind of like a CSI episode with all the 'twists'. I really don't like his predicting the future thing either.

Coen Bros did one on The Man Who Wasnt There (plus a fake film expert "commenting" on Blood Simple from copy made up by CB) that's interesting & Spinal Tap's is almost better than the movie.

That Blood Simple commentary is bizarre.

Incendies

This movie got nominated for an Oscar but I'd never heard about. Recorded it off of Starz or Showtime weeks ago solely on fact it got such high reviews. Sat in my DVR for weeks because every time I read the description of what the movie was about it sounded dull. Basic description was middle eastern lady sends kids back to middle east to discover their roots. Not exactly my thing.

Finally starting watching. Started without a lot of bang and to be honest was not sure it was worth the 2 hour or so time investment. 20 minutes or so into the movie I realize it was a well put together movie, like one of those movies that's not overly interesting but so well done it's worth a watch. So I stayed with it and to be honest I felt that's how most of the movie was. A solid well done movie that was not overly entertaining. Good acting, scenery, intelligent, the whole thing just not entertaining or subject matter I found thrilling. That was until the last bit of the movie which than proceeded to drop bombs on me and leave me feeling stunned afterward and that's all I can say without spoiling the movie.

In the end very very glad I stayed with the movie but it leads me to an interesting thought. If a movie is merely well done but a little dull for the majority of the movie and than is outstanding at the end is it a good movie or just a move with a entertaining ending? At whatever rate I'll probably forget the end of this movie like never, it'll stay with me.

Maybe it's just me, but if a movie is brilliantly acted, has an intelligent and interesting script, and has beautiful scenery, then I am entertained; as I was pretty well throughout Incendies. I thought it was one of the best films of the past 5 years.

You just explained why it was a well done movie a lot better than I did and I'd agree with everything you said except for the part about the interesting script. In the end it was, it just took me a long time to realize it which may be more on me than the movie.

These guys make very good simple, emotional movies. I liked all three of the movies you mentioned but the key is not to expect too much and none them need to be seen at the theater IMO. I actually found this one more enjoyable to watch that the others, probably because of the kid in this.

Some would say that seasons two and three are only a slight step down.I'd say rent McBride's The Foot Fist Way instead of watching seasons two and three.

Hell yes. The scene with the gf on the bleachers is probably funnier than anything from seasons 2-3.

I can understand that, as the story begins very ambiguously and unravels relatively slowly; but as someone who watches and enjoys a good deal of Canadian cinema, I was expecting as such coming into the film.

The Lives of Others has a pretty great commentary/interview with the director that gave me even more repsect and admiration for the movie. I dunno if he's got running commentary through the film though...

For me the epitome of this is There Will Be Blood, although there are probably others. Thought it was excellent but no interest whatsoever to watch it again, despite the tour de force performance. Ive never seen Schindler's List and wouldn't be surprised if I feel the same way about that one.

So you're telling me that whenever you're unsure of what DVD you want to watch some night in the casa de Chaka, a common dilemma is deciding between Goodfellas, Fight Club, Donnie Darko, and Schindler's List???

Not sure if I go out of my way to turn on many films I have previously seen, even more so for films with a 3:15 run time. It is more of a situation of whether or not I will sit through them again if I come across them on cable. In that regard I will say that if Schindler's List is on I am likely not turning it off in favor of Goodfellas, Fight Club or Donnie Darko (which isn't even remotely in the same universe as the others). It is a powerful and enthralling film that has incredible rewatchability.

Yeah. It's heavy, but I'm glad I watched it. I thought Carey Mulligan was really great in this. There's a nude scene she does early on, and it seems gratuitous, but it really sets up a lot. Not to mention she's not in tip-top shape, which I think is a function of her character and less about wanting to look good naked. It's tough, but as far as addiction movies go, it's pretty damn good. The music is beautiful.

Interesting, Schindler's List doesnt strike me as that kind of film, although were kind of talking about different things here (if Im channel searching, 9 times out of 10 I'll put on something new that sounds intriguing or is  instead of something Ive seen). Since its been 15+ years and I still havent seen it, I guess it doesnt mean much but Im now wanting to see the List more than ever

I saw Schinder's list in the theater. With an intermission, because it was so long and depressing. I wouldn't see it again, I got the point.
Multiple opinions on Spielberg's List are appreciated :thumbup:I doubt I'll find it depressing, plenty of movie's topics are and don't really affect me like that, but Im still questioning rewatchability here.

Im stuck in a motel in Missoula, MT indefinitely. Wasnt really paying attention all that much to it, but just realized FX stretched out Death Race to a 3hr movie (and yes, it was the best thing on TV, or at least that was the case 3hrs ago).

Are you for serious?!?!!!!

I have a long flight to italy coming up in may and was thinking of ripping some dvds to my ipad. Ive seen all my dvds a 100 times im sure but i never watch the audio commentaries. This could be a good opportunity to do so. What are some of the better ones out there?
Boogie NightsThe GodfatherRaging BullDark CityFight Club
Godfathers and Fight Club are in my library, so that works. Any others people enjoyed? Usual Suspects, tarantino films, etc?
Usual Suspects has a good one, if I recall correctly. I don't think Tarantino does commentaries, does he?
The Lives of Others has a pretty great commentary/interview with the director that gave me even more repsect and admiration for the movie. I dunno if he's got running commentary through the film though...
Sweet. One film bonus I loved was the special features for Atom Agoyan's "The Sweet Hereafter." It's an incredible movie, and the author of the novel gives a talk about the film on the DVD. Fascinating.
