The Three Musketeers - 5.5/10

I thought maybe...just maybe...

But I was wrong. It's terrible. And boring.

Can anyone recommend a good iteration of this movie? I want to show one to my son, but I've long forgotten which version is the best.

The Richard Lester films are by far the best IMO.

Ah yes. I saw those as a kid and liked them a lot.

You'll probably enjoy them as an adult too. There is actually a lot of risque dialogue that flew over my head when I first saw them.

Really enjoyed Young Adult. Charlize Theron continues to be an impressive, underrated actress. She really elevated what could have been a boring movie. She's just so good in tough roles. Patton Oswalt was very good too. Very relatable movie, might be a little too dark and depressing for some.3.5/5

I think I liked this one a little less than others, but think it is still worth a peek for a lot of watchers here. I probably would give it 6/10. Today I also popped in:

River's Edge:

Was recommended this by a customer and had never seen it. Thought it could have been great, but it really had a low production, afterschool special vibe that I couldn't get into. That combined with Crispin Glover trying to outdo Keanu at being Keanu, and I just wasn't feeling it today. 4/10.

The Breakfast Club:

Still love this movie and don't think it will ever age for me. Today I watched with the Judd Nelson/A.M Hall commentary on and was entertained enough. Wasn't the best that I have listened to, but they did point out a couple things that sadly I had never picked up on in the countless times I have watched the movie. Main one was when Brian told Claire how ####ty she was for telling them they wouldn't be friends on Monday and how they would just laugh at them after they walked away. They pointed out that Brian had done exactly that to the janitor at the beginning of the movie and then came around at the end and was nice to him in the hallway for a nice subtle personality shift. Never really thought of that before today.

I Am Number 4 - I expected "meh" and it delivered. Don't go out of your way but if you're hungover on a Sunday afternoon and it's on Showtime and the batteries in the remote die, then you could do marginally worse.

Agree on all counts. I think I dvr'd it and fast forwarded through half of it. Strange film, it was like a sci-fi film targeted at teenage girls. Who don't like sci-fi.

Both chicks in the movie were too. I didn't like that they recycled the bad guys from Critters though.I put it into the same class as Jumper. Solid flick that likely won't have a sequel though.

Thankfully I never saw Critters but I actually thought the main bad guy was the best part of a mediocre film.An alcohol fused young guy like you, healthy and well fed.I bet you watch a lot of television, don't cha? Do ya? Do ya? Yeah! In this situation hereyou're probably thinking... I could save the day. I could be the hero and I say... Don't do that, ok?

That's a damn shame. First two are pretty awesome. Really, really, campy, but awesome.

My favorite episode when I was a kid.

Yeah- that was a memorable one for me too (or else I wouldn't have remembered it).I just had to google my actual favorite- turns out it's the first episode in the series: Where is Everybody.

God, that show was amazing.

Still always make sure to catch some episodes when they do the marathons. I don't think I could name a favorite now, too many options. Love the one with Shatner at the diner or on the plane, Burgess Meredith as the librarian, the camera that takes pics of the future, the old woman at the farmhouse with the aliens, the guy that relives his childhood in his old home town. So many great ones.One episode I keep trying to catch is called "Twenty-two" with the catch phrase "Room for one more, honey"

I used to love Twilight zone as a kid. I can barely remember any of the episodes now but the one that sticks with me is about the guy who had the stopwatch that would stop time, and then it broke with everyone else but him stuck in a moment in time.

Right there with you man. There are definitely google worthy situations for me like Copeman, but for whatever reason with animated films (home or theater) I let it ride until the credits to figure out who it is. I guess I just want to give myself as much time as possible because its pretty ####ing fulfilling when you do realize at some point before the credits roll.

Thought this one was a rare miss for Payne. Usually have really liked his movies, but felt this one was a little flat. For a film about that subject matter, it should have been filled with emotion, but I felt none for the couple hours watching it. Clooney was decent, but nothing Oscar-worthy. After that, I found everybody to range from bland (his older daughter) to downright terrible (Sid and Matthew Lillard). Thought it was OK, but nothing worthy of the Oscar buzz or my interest level. 5.5/10

Only 5 episodes in, but I feel myself getting hooked. Still having a little trouble keeping up with all the characters, but so far I am impressed by what I am seeing. Wished it lasted a few more seasons. It would have been interesting to see where it went since it seemed like the scale of the crime went higher up each season.

My Way

South Korean WW2 movie that follows a Japanese officer and Korean soldier through the myriad of wars in the 30s-40s. Some of the characters and motivations were flawed to mediocre at best, but most of the battle footage was top notch and more than worth sitting through the flaws. Another very interesting and compelling SK movie. These guys are really getting good.

4/5 stars for most guys

2.5/5 for those without testosterone

I arrived 30 min late to My Way, and this one was just starting and at 90 min., it would be over before the next My Way showing.

Interesting premises and excellent performance by the future girl. But incredibly slowly paced; I dozed off several times

Im pretty sure in 1 of my Wire related responses to you, I said dont let the endless amount of characters get in the way of your enjoyment. Its a process, struggled with a lot of the middle ground to near meaningless characters names for nearly the entire season. By the time the season is wrapping up, and 2 begins, you will have a pretty good feel on putting a face with the name.Glad youre enjoying it

Just finished first season of Damages. Very impressed. Not an all-timer but well done and very entertaining. Hesitated watching this one because it seemed like it never really got the buzz nor word of mouth. Definetly worth checking out if you're looking for a show.

Think what kept this show from being a smash is that Rose Byrne is a bit weak. Cute but doesn't light up the screen nor does she come off as a potential shark. A real miscast. Wonder if they were hesitant putting up a female lead that would outshine Close.

Just saw this film and it utterly blew me away; an experimental film that hits all the right notes from start to finish imo. Combines documentary, war film, and exquisitely beautiful animation flawlessly. After seeing it I expected to see a lot of talk about it in this thread, but was pretty shocked to find it barely talked about. I can't recommend it enough to those who have yet to see it.

Although I agree with this to a degree, how many cop shows have been on HBO or SHO? That is part of the problem, but at least for me I didnt have that kind of mindset going in so I had no premonissions.I dont think The Wire is a challenge for the viewer, its moreso being a realistic and diverse TV show fan. I havent seen a great TV show that totally had me sold from the start or first few episodes, and neither did The Wire.

I don't think Byrne is weak. I think Glenn Close is all-time great, and makes everyone seem a lesser light. Loved Danson that first season. He was like a smarter, meaner Sam Malone.Also, Tate Donovan was underrated--he was a great counterweight to Close.

Definitely an underrated series. I was disappointed in Season 4 (with John Goodman)but the rest have been solid. Looks like a new season starts in July.

I really enjoyed the 1st season- thought it was solid top-to-bottom: acting, directing (and other technical aspects), writing... it's not a new idea, but I enjoyed the opposing time-lines within the plot. I actually liked the lead, and thought the supporting cast was excellent. I started season 2 and quickly lost interest- felt like more of the same and IIRC got a little ridiculous.

Maybe for me it's just that I don't like the style. With the absence of any music or toning and the way things just kind of happen with no build-up I just don't get any emotion out of it. The characters themselves aren't enough to do it for me. I can tell sometimes when I'm supposed to feel sad or shocked but I don't feel sad or shocked like I do when shows with less "realistic" production values do the same thing.

For me, it falls into a similar category of Breaking Bad (though through 3 seasons of Breaking Bad I like it much better than the Wire so far). They're both good enough shows, but I don't see where all the "best ever" hype comes from.

By the way, are TV shows fair game in here? I've just caught up on a few but was keeping my reviews to movies.

Justified had me hooked from the beginning, watched the entire 1st season in 1 sitting. I think its very good, but it doesnt take itself seriously enough for me to consider it great. Im about halfway through season 1 of Boardwalk. While Im enjoying it, think its very well made, the production is off the charts, not sure Id say Im hooked yet. If that were the case I think Id have finished the season by now. I dont recall when exactly The Wire had me hooked, but it definitely took until later on in the 1st season to realize how great it was.

Breaking Bad has surpassed the Wire for me though and I believe Season 5 of BB will make that even more definitive.

I'll say this kindly: I don't think Justified is in the same universe as The Wire. That said, it's tense and entertaining. So in that respect, Justified is more accessible.

I just recently completed season 1 of The Wire.It didn't really draw me in that much. It's a decent enough show, and entertaining, but so far I don't get where all the "omg greatest show evah!!!" stuff comes from.

Maybe for me it's just that I don't like the style. With the absence of any music or toning and the way things just kind of happen with no build-up I just don't get any emotion out of it. The characters themselves aren't enough to do it for me. I can tell sometimes when I'm supposed to feel sad or shocked but I don't feel sad or shocked like I do when shows with less "realistic" production values do the same thing.

For me, it falls into a similar category of Breaking Bad (though through 3 seasons of Breaking Bad I like it much better than the Wire so far). They're both good enough shows, but I don't see where all the "best ever" hype comes from.

By the way, are TV shows fair game in here? I've just caught up on a few but was keeping my reviews to movies.

Natalie Zea is smoking but she's hardly the only reason to watch the show. For starters, Olyphant is great and makes the show worth watching almost just for him. I dont watch any of the shows on USA, or TNT, or even the big 3, but the vast majority of those shows dont have major continuing storylines, AFAIK.

Not saying you got to copy The Shield but a more powerful role would have been a better use of time/effort here. Goggins is an all-timer due to The Shield but his role in this is really forced. The setting is terrific and lots of talent involved. I just find it all uninspiring and a missed opportunity. Wish the show took itself more seriously. Obviously not their intent but probably why the show hasn't taken off.

Goggins, for his part, is just kind of there. he's a plot fixer that helps move things along and tidy up the loose ends in the writing. i'm not sure what show he's a fit on but his type of character acting is a tough fit for most serial work.

Some times I like steak and sometimes I like potato chips.I love them both, but in different ways for different reasons. No doubt steak is better, but I sure do enjoy me some potato chips.

The Dancer Upstairs - A pretty straight forward police procedural with political overtones. Malkovich still needs some work as a storyteller, I did not quite buy into the romance, but this one is all about Javier Bardem who was excellent as usual. It was a, mostly, different character type than I am used to seeing from him and of course he nailed it.

Decent film. I wouldn't go too far out of your way to watch it but if you are a Bardem fan it should definitely be in your queue.

The Tree of Life - Hard to describe this one. I found the style very interesting and was very moved by some of the scenes, especially the ending. It was just a bit too long though.
