Just watched this one the other day. Thought it was OK, but I am usually a sucker for the "found footage" movies. If you don't like that style, I would stay away. Thought the underlying premise of what would happen if troubled teenagers get super powers was interesting enough, but a lot of the F/X were lame - especially when they were flying around, etc... Still was above average and worth a view if you like or at least can tolerate that format. 5.5/10

I just checked out the screens from Battleship and it looks like one of the worst quality CAM's I've seen.

Sleepless Nights (Nuit Blanche)

French thriller about a cop stealing cocaine - dirtier cops stealing from him, Russians mobsters losing the cocaine kidnapping his son and all kind of double-crosses and fist fights and guys getting shot in the head. Its a thrill ride start to finish and the action is not only non-stop, its at redline speed the whole 95 minutes. Almost the entire movie is set in a huge French nightclub (Tarmac) that makes Gilley's look like a studio apartment. The French have really been turning out some good crime thrillers lately and this one is as good as any. It was quite a surprise- written and directed by Frederic Jardin whose career thus far has been undistinguished at best. He's now a name I will look for in the future. Quite a movie, I highly recommend it.

4.48/5 stars

Bernie

New Linklater film about Bernie Tiede, assistant funeral director, humanitarian, murderer and hero. Jack Black plays Bernie and turns in a joyous, tour de force. It was great to see the old jack back, strutting across the screen with the childish abandonment that made him a star. Shirley McClaine and Matthew McConaughey were top notch as co-stars, but the parade of Texan character actors probably generate more laugh at loud moments than the stars. Set in Carthage Texas and painfully true to is East Texas roots, Linklater acutely captures the region's very best and worst in a very funny and very humanistic portrayal. The storyline reminded me a lot of Byrne's True Stories. but decidedly funnier with better overall performances. Linklater's best since Slackers/Dazed and Confused.

4.51/5

The Big Year: With a cast of Steve Martin, Jack Black and Owen Wilson, it takes special writing and directing skills to not have single humorous moment. No laughs. No chuckles. Nothing. I watched blankly for the entire 100 minutes. What a terrible waste of time. How is something allowed to be billed as a comedy when there isn't even an attempt to make a single joke? Terrible. -1.5/5

The effects were average at best, but it didnt bother me here because of the overall concept and actually seemed fitting. I dont think the viewer is supposed to be visually in awe of them either, which also matters. Best part about it for me was how real it felt despite it being sci-fi, as well as the relationships between the 3 of them. I thought the found footage was so well done you didnt even notice it half the time once the story gets rolling.

I am, however, interested in checking out the the 1979 BBC mini series of TTSS.

It doesn't get much cooler than Obi-Wan Kenobie vs. Captain Picard.
Outstanding. Behind only Jewel in the Crown as the best mini-series from the first decade of the genre.
What genre are you referring to? Because it is pretty difficult to top I, Claudius as a BBC miniseries in my book.
Never connected with that. Found it hammy - reheated Shakespeare. And I liked the book, which i read only a decade ago, quite well. The original TTSS was almost the opposite of Claudius - very much like Mad Men that the drama was to be found in what wasnt being said.

Fair enough. For my part I loved the stylized, Shakespearean theater deliveries, which I think was intentional, and the performances are incredible across the board. The depths of the evil and depravity they explore are shocking in 2012 let alone for 1976. Great stuff IMO.I also think it is a great watch for fans of HBO's Rome, because it picks up towards the end of the reign of Augustus (Rome left off at the beginning of his reign).

The Blind Swordsman: Zatoichi - I have never seen any of the 27 Zatoichi films from the 60s-70s so this is my first exposure to the character. It's a fun premise, blind bad### samurai fights evil, and some of the execution is creative and even original. However the fight choreography is average at best and there is a bunch of CGI blood spatter which I personally find distracting.

If you are into the genre or just like semi-mindless action films it's worth a viewing but it's not worth going out of your way to see.

Heaven (2002) - I had never used a library for movies before, but there's one nearby my new home & i noticed it had a bunch of DVDs so i started borrowing them. I'm through all the good, easy films - now i'm onto the ones ive seen, the "yeah, maybes", and the foreign & important films. Saw one called "Heaven" that was directed by Tom Tykwer, produced by Pollack & Minghella and starred Cate Blanchett. Hmmm, why have i never heard of this? I forgot the reason why you never hear about movies you should.

This may be the worst movie i ever sat all the way thru. It was written by the Polish Red-White-Blue guy before he died, so i kept watching past bunches of poor-plottings & found circumstances & awkward, disconnected scenes in hopes of a payoff down the line. bupkes, nada, niente. To illustrate how little there was for me, i am going to make an equivalent Heaven for you in this post:

Producers Pollack & Minghella, find me a public transit terminal, make it look like Dubuque and put a stack of Venetian blinds, a narcotized wolverine and a zamboni in there. Director Tykwer, you can only shoot scenes either lying on the floor directly under the action or from the farthest point in the terminal from what's going on. Miss Blanchett, Mr Ribisi, shave your heads (ed: they actually do) and put on these white t-shirts because we are going to project ice-dancing highlights and birthing videos on them. Now Miss Blanchett, you do simple algebra with the wolverine while sitting on the blinds but dont let him see your work, Mr Ribisi....wait for it...ok, now pour that maple syrup in the path you imagine the zamboni taking while making motorboat sounds. Now go to the far corner - you're too close Mr Tykwer! - remove your clothing and stand 27 inches apart holding bonzai trees over your head. Send in the cleaning ladies asking directions in several languages and tip over the helicopter simulator! Cut, print. 1,844,700/5

never saw Dekalog, but a big fan (if that's the right word) of the Colors. Blue is in my alltime Top 10 foreign-language.

Straight to Video on Demand. The guy was printing money for Hollywood and it's amazing that now Mel can't even get a theater release in the U.S. anymore.

GtG is better than Payback and would have made $100M if Gibson wasn't a nut job who pissed off the people who run his industry.

Is Payback really any kind of benchmark?!After reading the synopsis, maybe youre just comparing them as revenge type movies

Coriolanus - modern adaption of the Shakespeare play. I didn't expect to be drawn into this as much as I was but it was amazing. The first hour is pretty slow going but it picks up in the middle and the last hour flew by. I recommend watching it with subtitles.

I really just looked at the $80M that Payback made and his character in GtG is similar to the one in Payback.

World's Greatest Dad - It's funny, disturbing, dark and strangely uplifting all at the same time. I really enjoyed this one.

I didn't like Shakes the Clown at all and I thought Windy City Heat was very mean spirited (although I admit to laughing occasionally) but WGD has me thinking that Bobcat Goldthwait is a director that I want to pay more attention to. I'm not going to rush out to rent Sleeping Dogs Lie (Good Lord Bobcat, WTF?) but God Bless America definitely has me intrigued.

:goodposting: Robin Williams usually bothers me but thought he was good here

ETA: Now that I think about it, I typically like RW in his more interesting, "not average joe" type roles like Death To Smoochy, One Hour Photo, Fisher King, Insomnia. The Big White, etc but many of his standard roles I dont enjoy/find funny at all.

Sleeping Dogs Lie is a phenomenal movie. Its premise of a wonderful person making one atrocious mistake and the effect on her entire future. Extremely thought-provoking and uproariously funny. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

I appreciate the insight but after Shakes and Windy City it took a lot of recommendations in here before I was willing to give WGD a shot. If I can get a few more positives about Sleeping Dogs I will give that one a shot too. But my goodness what a twisted premise. I mean, who thinks that #### up? (rhetorical question).

Its not a premise, its a plot device. What would you come up with as the most horrible thing that someone could do, but really not ever affect another living soul, except for their reaction to the knowledge of the hideous fact. Which brings up the second major storyline- how honest should you be in your relationships?

That's one hell of a MacGuffin. I am not sure that is an exploration I would ever consider for a film in the first place so I have not given it any thought. I am pretty sure that since I have thus far had enough good sense not to have sex with my goldfish that if I ever got really, really, really, really drunk and somehow did have sex with my goldfish that I would never, ever, ever, ever, ever tell another person that I had sex with my goldfish. I would probably kill the goldfish too just in case. Y'know loose fish sink ships and all that.I am not saying I will never watch it but I would like to hear a few more reviews in here before I do.

Safe House - 7/10

Denzel basically reprises his Training Day character but the plot is interesting enough for a rental for sure.

50/50 - 7/10

I think this film could have had much more emotional impact than the final 10 minutes. Gordon-Levitt is great as usual and OMG is Anna Kendrick cute.

But Seth Rogan and his d-bag, be as vulgar as possible shtick bugs the #### out of me and nearly ruined this movie.

Chronicle - Surprisingly well done. I understand why they went with the "found footage" angle as it allowed them to shorten the run time removing the unnecessary "discovering I have super powers" time eaters and getting straight to the meat of the story. I had a little trouble with the resolution of the final confrontation as being kinda convenient but overall this was a really easy to watch fun ride.

The Grey - I had a few problems with some of the decisions the protagonists made because they felt like obvious devices to move the story along (more on that in spoilers) but I really enjoyed this as an exploration of man when confronted with his own mortality as well as starkly demonstrating the immense effort that man must make to stave off and protect ourselves from the all consuming inevitability of nature.

Some in here have complained about the fact that it wasn't as action packed as they expected, but I thought there were plenty of wolf sequences, action and serious tension. Ultimately this is not an action film but the pacing, IMO, was excellent.

I see zero reason for them to leave the plane wreckage other than to move the plot along. GPS and black box technology are light years ahead of the days of the Uruguayan rugby team and even one or two search and rescue craft would have found the wreckage in a matter of days.

The whole tree jumping thing also made zero sense. The wolves were behind them and there was a ridiculously big chasm in front of them so they jump across to the trees and then...the wolves are in front of them? WTF??? Sure it could have been an exceptionally large wolf pack (they average 5-11 but have been recorded as large as 42) but it also implies that there was pretty easy access down the chasm if the wolves include that in their hunting range

We Need to Talk About Kevin - The story about a woman (Tilda Swinton) dealing with the guilt after her son goes on a killing spree at his high school. The film is filled with imagery that is, IMO, a metaphorical representation of Swinton washing the blood from her hands.

This was not very well received in this thread and I sometimes have difficulty watching Tilda Swinton because she kinda looks like the love child of Adrien Brody, David Bowie and John Hurt but I gotta say I thought this was a fascinating film. It's a slow burn early and there are lots of time jumps that are a little difficult to follow initially but the pacing really picks up in the second and third acts.

This is a deeply disturbing film no doubt, you won't find any joy or uplifting themes, but I thought this was a very well done film that keeps you thinking about it long after viewing.

For people who don't think that a child can simply be born as bad seeds you should read this article (there was a thread on it last week). I also think they did a good, albeit quick, job representing the foundation for the detachment between Swinton and Miller during the childbirth scene.

Looked to me like the plane they were in was quite a bit older than new - likely owned for many years by the oil company - and wouldn't have that modern technology. Further, Alaska is HUGE and I don't think they'd have been found very quickly.

I guess I could see that. And they did try to address it with the GPS watch they found but it still felt like a plot driver that they hoped the audience would not think about too much. I am not sure what kind of monitoring there is of all aircraft in flight but between logged flight paths, regular telemetry being sent by the planes (an assumption by my part) as well as the ability for satellites to search an area, it felt a little implausible. Lack of firewood seems like the best argument for heading to the trees, far more than lack of food or shelter (the latter of which the plane provided).

Swinton is a fantastic actor. Really, who cares about her looks? Look at Playboy if that's what you're into.

I don't remember any similarities between the two movies. Safe House doesn't do anything original, but it's entertaining.
I'm just saying that the characters were kind of similar. In other words, I felt Washington kind of mailed it in. But even at that level he's interesting.

As to the last point in your spoiler, that goes both ways. Where were they going?
To the most likely area of civilization given their best guess. In the end it was a choice of wait around to die or move and die. The point of the movie being that it's better to march toward death with a little hope than it is to wait for it in despair.

If you happen to stumble across "Higher Ground" on OnDemand or Showtime or whatever just ignore it. I saw that it starred and was directed by Vera Farmiga and was intrigued. It goes nowhere and takes a very long time to not get there.

Sure.

Any of you lot see Before the Rain?

I remember loving this one- IIRC, interesting swirling of chronology/perception around a few overlapping story lines based on violence and loss. I haven't seen it since the theaters and am wondering if anybody else saw it and or liked it. My recollection of Yi-Yi kind of inspired this... and I'm guessing it's going to be Krista again as the only person commenting.
