Pretty funny and kept me amused throughout, but really not much substance to any of it. Reminded me of a really long quality sitcom. Passes the time agreeably enough, but in the end, just a waste of time. But I did laugh aloud a few times and smiled a lot and I liked the actors/characters, so its amiable enough to almost get a few stars.

7 and Bernie were more crimedies than comedies. The line does blur, esp. with the recent spate of dramedies.

That's what I thought about Seven Psychopaths, but after seeing it, it was definitely a pure comedy; the crime plot is really just sets up the framework of all the quips and jokes. I'd say there was probably more quips/jokes in Seven Psychopaths then in the typical comedy film like Hall Pass that tries to get sentimental at the end. As for Bernie, I laughed out loud plenty of times for that film. It's a very light dark comedy if that makes any sense, and the mockumentary set up of the film definitely adds to the lightness.

Killer Joe...this was really good and I hope it sneaks up into people's best of the year lists. Matthew McConaghey has actually had a few good performances to date despite popular belief, but this was easily his best yet IMO. Acting was great all around, namely by Emile Hirsch and newcomer Juno Temple, who you see plenty of. Great cinematography, direction, and soundtrack. Gets gruesome at times, but otherwise absolutely loved this film...4.1/5

What a steaming pile of #### this film was. Boring, stupid, repugnant, and humorless are just a few adjectives I would use to describe the film, which shocks me as I thought the trailer looked great and the film has been well received by critics. The film also has quite possibly the worst movie scene I've ever witnessed, and this incredibly melodramatic, loathsome, and idiotic scene goes on for a good 15 minutes. I can't say enough bad things about this film, though maybe if you go in expecting a boring and humorless B-movie it'd be possible to not despise it's existence.

Yeah, something didn't seem right about that trailer, so I avoided it.Hard to believe William Friedkin directed this movie.

I loved it...guess it's not for everybody but if you like dark humor and twisted people/situations you'll enjoy it.

I thought it was great. I have a few complaints but overall thought it was quite enjoyable. Insanely dark comedy filled with a great combination of stupid, greedy, psychotic, naive, white trash characters. I disliked all the characters by the end but rooting against folks can be a lot of fun. Almost all of them were loathsome and there were few - if any - redeeming qualities about any of the family members. But it all fit for me as aside from Joe they all seemed one step (if that) above mental ######ation. Trailer trash has never been so entertaining. And McConahauy (sp?) made an excellent villain. Watching him change from a methodical killer into flashing his inner insanity was riveting. Wish they had played the change up a bit more and he received even more screen time. Felt like the movie could have thrown a bit more effort into that and done away with a few other scenes but not every flick is perfect. RT and popcorn score were similar with a high 70's. It's definitely not everyone's cup of tea.

As you can see, it's definitely not for everyone but hopefully yet another quality review will help push jdog into giving it a try. Glad you enjoyed it as well.

I stumbled across "Fireproof" on basic cable last night. It's a Kirk Cameron/Jesus movie where he has a failing marriage that he has to save. On its merits, it's 0 out of 4 stars. As camp, it's 3/4.Also, this movie apparently made $33mm in the theatres, in case you didn't already know that we are doomed.

This movie swept through my office when it came out. I was working at a university with a religious affiliation, so the whole office went on and on about it. They didn't recommend it to me, though. They had already gotten the point of my movie tastes when they were all going on and on about wanting to see Marley and Me. I said "Spoiler alert: At the end the dog jumps in a woodchipper." Silver Linings Playbook.

In a strong year I wouldn't call it an Oscar contender. But this year who know's. It's really good. Nice to see DeNiro put in a good performance. Soak it up while you can.

Lawrence is terrific. Plus a C. Tucker sighting.

Russell with an interesting resume now with Silver Linings, Flirting With Disaster, Three Kings and the Fighter.

Overall I'd give it a 8/10. Solid flick with some good laughs and you get to see De Niro give a ####. Will say the trailers to this one don't do it justice and went to see this only after the surprising sterling reviews.

Saw this today. Liked it. I agree with the sentiment about the misleading trailer. They made the movie seem a lot sillier than it was. Cooper plays this role with a razor sharp edge, with an anger that he can barely keep from flowing over. Also agree with De Niro's performance. He was really invested in the character. When you see him on this level, it painfully emphasizes just how much he sleep walks through those "####er" movies

Yeah, the division between opinions on it reminds me of a somewhat similar, violent, indie, dark dramedy - The Killer Inside Me.As for Killer Joe, it also should be mentioned Gina Gershon still looks freakin fantastic

Half star each for Julianne Hough and Catherine Zeta-Jones. One full star for Malin Ackerman.

The rest is a total trainwreck. Easily the worst performance of Tom Cruise's career and even though he spent four months learning how to sing it didn't help as he is terrible.

And the story is awful and overlong. Two hours?

Julie and Julia- Didn't care too much for the Julie story but Meryl Streep gives her usual great performance. I'm guessing Julia Child was always that animated but I only know her from the few times I saw her on TV. I remember her being very entertaining and thinking she seemed drunk. 2.5/5

Really it felt like they tried to cram 6 hours worth of material into a 2:45 film. Nothing glaring IIRC but it did feel disjointed at times. I also thought the fight coordination and photography was really a big step down from the previous film.

It's definitely worth watching, I will certainly watch it again when it hits cable but don't expect The Dark Knight.

The Broadway show was a lot of fun - why'd they have to screw it up like this? I forced myself to watch half of it before I realized it wasn't going to get any better and turned it off.

I saw this way after it came out but still in the IMAX, so I didnt really look at/follow reviews of it after I saw it since I was more than a month late to the party , but I agree with pretty much everything you said. I liked it, it was good, but it was missing something. I wont say that its because its not as good as Dark Knight because Im still not sure Begins isnt my favorite of the series, but very high expectations were probably part of my slight disappointment. It did feel disjointed and jumping around, although in retrospect I think part of that was Batman being stranded in the well-Alcatraz and other flashbacks, but still. I did really like how it felt totally different than the previous 2 films, almost post-apocalyptic once things got rolling. Ive also become a huge fan of Tom Hardy the last few years, and thought he did well as Bane, so hard to say what I didnt love about it besides what you mentioned. I actually ended up getting the DVD for Xmas so I might watch it tomorrow.

Wouldn't recommend this movie to most people, but I'm glad I saw it. This could have been good in the way that Half Nelson was good. But where that movie succeeded, this one packs far too much in the plot. Rather than focus on the two or three strongest stories, the movie packs in every single dramatic confrontation it can.

Still, if you like dark, intense dramas, give it a shot.

Safety Not Guaranteed: Great movie. Light humor mixed in with some good drama and mystery. Every role was so well done. 4/5

I watched these two over the last few days and agree with your assessment. Quite a few good laughs in The Campaign which make it worth the watch, but overall I think it was lucky it clocked in under 90mins (which is what comedies should be at).

I loved Safety Not Guaranteed, but I wish I could unsee the last 5mins or so of the film. It really felt out of place with the rest of it and it left me with a bad taste in my mouth.

I've heard that from some people and don't really get it.

I had a couple issues with the ending:

Mostly it had to do with the 'tone' of the ending and how out of left field it felt. Up until the last 5 mins it played like an indie mystery and I felt like we were supposed to be figuring out if this guy was nuts or for real. Now all of a sudden we have a time machine on a boat with a light show that looked like it was out of that Guy Pierce Time Machine? Felt really out of place.

Mostly it was the tone, but I did feel cheated by them telling us that he was capable of this. Yes, I think an ambiguous ending would have fit more with the rest of the movie. Maybe have them get into a more iffy looking machine, and have it open as to if they died or travelled in time? Or as somebody suggested, leave it open somehow by him deciding not to go because he met the girl, but maybe at the end somehow give us a hint that he just might have done it the other time like he suggested (maybe tie it in more to the Kristin Bell story thread?).

Still really liked the movie...

I can understand that but I really dislike ambiguous endings. I feel like they're a cope out by the director. Up until the big ball of light (or whatever it was), I thought it was very tense and could have gone a few different ways.

I like ambiguous if it matches with the rest of the movie. It would have worked better with this movie since the whole movie was going back and forth whether he was making it up or not. One of my other beefs:

At any point did we get a hint about him having any sort of technological capability? After seeing the time travelling boat, I was also annoyed because there didn't seem to be too much of a hint of him being able to to this at all. We seem them 'training', but that seemed laughable. Sure he stole some equipment, but I don't remember seeing anything laying around that might suggest he had any competency in building anything. Maybe I just missed something.

Was not a big fan of the ending either. I thought her getting on the boat was enough. She was willing to go with him. Not back in time but with him.

Perhaps she gets on the boat and the FBI comes crashing in and prevents him from getting to turn on the machine. We are left not knowing but who cares, he got the girl.

It's been mentioned before but saw TED. Some parts I thought were hilarious and some meh. I love Family Guy so I was excited going in, probably had too high of expectations but still thought it was very well done

just watched Lincoln. Dont think it was as great as the critics are making it out to be. Though DDL was simply awesome but for some reason I felt he was not given enough "power" speeches in the film.

Not sure how accurate they made Mrs. Lincoln to be, but she was borderline asylum material (as they indicated in the film)

Wouldn't recommend this movie to most people, but I'm glad I saw it. This could have been good in the way that Half Nelson was good. But where that movie succeeded, this one packs far too much in the plot. Rather than focus on the two or three strongest stories, the movie packs in every single dramatic confrontation it can.

Still, if you like dark, intense dramas, give it a shot.

I agree partially. I think it threw too much in, but it had some very memorable scenes.

Just keep the caveat in mind that you gotta like dark and depressing.

depressing is the operative word here, wow was that some depressing stuff.Just watched it, very good acting from Brody, not sure why he didnt even get a whisper of any awards stuff with this performance. He had some top notch scenes with great writing especially the opening scene with him in the class and the confrontation with that black troublemaker.

Just wish they gave the other teachers real roles other than "teaching ghetto kids is depressing" routines. Christina Hendrick added absolutely nothing to the film, she could have been given a little more to do.

All in all it was a great acting movie that had real heart.

One thing I really liked about the film was how they explored the subject of not judging others too quickly, as Hendrick's character was accusing Brody of touching that fat girl inappropriately, they through in a split second pic of the child hooker that completed that sentiment of how badly this could look to the outside world.

Also I didnt fully understand the papers in the air and the school being in some kind of windstorm in the end, where Brody was reading the passage from Poe.

• The garbage and paper in the school metaphor was related to the Fall of the House of Usher in that this school was decaying - at least figuratively.

Agreed. I was mildly entertained but they left a lot of potential on the table.

It wasn't any of that, it was a film about brotherhood, barely camouflaged behind the western/mobster template. Three leads were great and Shia nailed his role, even if it was just playing Shia. Tom Hardy's onscreen presence is unparalleled these days.Not the best made film, but some of scenes hit on all cylinders for me, especially the "Have you met brother Harold?"

Will probably go down as one of my all time favorite guilty pleasures. The DVD already has a place on my shelf fit snug between Over the Top and Tango & Cash.

As long as I'm here a couple more random thoughts:

-Agree with Jdogg that Moonrise Kingdom best of what I've seen from 2012. Wes Anderson performances are what they are just like a Mamet script is what it is. I personally find it hilarious on multiple levels.

-I don't get the Killer Joe love. Friedkin's style of over the top "realism" is exaggerated and is basically one big characterture. For the people saying McConaughey was something that they had never seen before, I found it to be very, very, similar to his character in Texas Chainsaw Massacre- The Next Generation, fortunately for everybody there is probably like a dozen people that have ever watched that. If you liked Gershon in this, make sure you have seen Bound.
