Gangs of Wasseypur

If you liked City of God, you'll love Gangs of Wasseypur! J/K, but it's an excellent gangster movie. There are actually two parts but I've only watched the first one (each is about 2.5 hours).

Cloud Atlas

This wasn't bad at all, I'd give it a 3 out of 4. Not particularly confusing or anything. Long though.

This Is 40

This is self-indulgent bull#### with no plot. My expectations were low and I was still somehow disappointed. I'm done with Apatow (directing).

Flight

Crap. Could have been better with a coherent, consistent plot. The premise was fine but god, the final product was absurd.

The Imposter

Not a perfect doc but I recommend it as one of those pretty incredible people stories. I think the less you know going in the more interesting you may find it. Suffice it to say, it's about a crazy French guy who assumes the identity of a missing American teenager.

Saw The Adjustment Bureau over the weekend. Pretty good flick. Didn't know a lot about it and can't remember why I put it in my Netflix queue (probably from a recommendation from here).

Total Recall (2012) - 7.5/10

Ridiculous premise aside (they'd have been better off with an outer space colony rather than burrowing through the earth) the visual effects, Biel and Beckinsale among them, are great. And it's wall to wall action.

Turn brain off and enjoy.
Agreed. I enjoyed this was more than I ever expected, even tho some of the things were unrealistic scientifically (like the core shuttle), but its from a PK **** story and he was not so much about the whether the scifi stuff was credible, but rather how things would change in the lives of the characters if you inserted this new stuff he dreamt up..

watched "football factory" last night. totally derivative. stylistically it's like "trainspotting" than "green street hooligans". don't waste your time.
Football Factory came out in 2004. GSH came out in 2005. Which one was derivative of which?I liked it, even though it was about Chel$ki fans. :X
not derivative of "GSH" at all and my comment should not be read that way.certainly, the storytelling (both writing and visuals) owe an obvious debt to "trainspotting" but it isn't even remotely as good. "GSH" is pretty weak - obvious and as tense as an ABC after-school special - but the acting is a step above "football factory".

FlightThe first 20 minutes of this movie was amazing and then it turned into a movie about alcoholism with some weird Jesus messages thrown in. I don't even know how to rate it but the beginning is worth watching even if you turn it off after that. Nice ending but the middle part really dragged.
This sounds like a pretty middling review, yet you ranked Flight in your Top 10 of the year in the Argo thread (in which you also said Argo isnt in the Top 10).

Chernobyl Diaries

Was thinking for some reason this was a ghost movie. It was not. Really lackluster overall and a pretty weak and formulaic plot. 1.5/5

Saw Cabin in the Woods. I hate horror films generally but i was told this was great, i understand the satire element in this film, but i found the film stupid and rather boring.
That was the problem right there. Cabin in the Woods is a horror geek/lover's horror movie.

yeah- me too.solid concept (that thankfully gets played through to the end) and smart play on most of the horror films I've seen in the last... long time. calling the movie "stupid" tells me the op didn't get the obvious here. this isn't an oscar contender, but was never meant to be.

I get the obvious- the satirization of the horror movie genre through the "controllers" of the game. Maybe stupid was too harsh a word to use here. I always hate horror movies so this was the wrong film for me to even critique since the genre is stupid to me.
One thing i didnt really understand though was if this whole ritual was to quell the beasts living underneath with the 5 sacrafices: the athlete, the skank, the uneducated etc.. why was there a ritual going on in China with children, i doubt there was a skank in that group and there were more than five people in the "ritual"?

Haywire was a really solid action flick. 8/10

The lead actress Carrano was kinda flat in her speaking roles, but she didnt have to talk too much and the asskicking and chase sequences were well done imo.

Lots of solid supporting actors in this one. If you are in the mood of watching a fun movie for 90 mins, this is a solid choice

Again, this is only me and one other person showing the love for this one. I loved the energy, the chubby lead and Soderberg's direction.Seems like it was roundly panned by about everyone else here. It could slip into the bottom of my top 10 for '12 ( a weak year imo)

panned? I am shocked anyone would actually hate on this movie too much. It was a popcorn flick with some solid action scenes. Was not nearly as bad as any Nic Cage movie.

I watched the Grey after reading a few people praise that movie here and I could not have written a worse movie than that one. The Grey could go down in my top 5 worst movies I have ever seen especially considering people were praising the movie. The movie was predictable, pointless and lacking any decent writing.

I think any sensible person knew how the movie would end, and if it ended with everyone surviving, people would complain how it wasnt realistic. I thought the dialogue was quite good in The Grey and really carried the movie.

Triple Lindig redundancy plan.

Fell asleep about 30 minutes into it and have zero interest in turning it back on. Not sure how it got such good reviews. Carano, although very hot, is a terrible actress.

Bought The Bourne Legacy with a gift card that I got for Christmas. Thought it was great. Tied in the 3rd one very well. Renner was solid taking over for this franchise.

 I hope she makes more films.

Pitch Perfect.

Mildly entertaining. I expected a lot of singing but this had a bit too much for me. Plus way too many old-tired songs. Would have liked more scenes with Anna Kendrick off-stage. Even when they do songs they kind of go out of their way not to show too much of her.

Maybe I'm being a bit hard on this one. I expected more due to the surprisingly good reviews. I was hoping for something along the lines of Bring It On but with Anna Kendrick who I seem to like in everything. This wasn't as good.

4/10.

Different cultures have different horror genres. In America, the typical horror movie involves the jock, the skank, etc. In Japan, the typical horror movie involves kids. They did these in various locations so at least one would complete the sacrifice.

Yeah, just watched this on a plane over the weekend and enjoyed it more than expected. There aren't many hotter chicks than Beckinsale but Biel is one of them, imo. I only saw the original when it came out so I can't really compare them but it was worth watching. 3/5A couple of others I watched on the plane:

The Amazing Spiderman - I'm not much on superheroes but always loved Spiderman. This one just fell flat and I couldn't even get through it. Maybe I'll give it another shot some day but the re-writing of the storyline was really annoying and the film just didn't have much heart to it. Just seemed to be going through the motions.

Margin Call - Started off well enough but just ended up being a typical evil corporate fatcat view into the financial crisis. The reactions by those on top were so comical that it ruined any sense of realism. Don't look to this film for any real insight into what happened. Great performances though if you look at it as a fictional story. 2.5/5

I enjoyed it for what it was .. a good action flick. as for the quote above.. "The lead actress Carrano was kinda flat in her speaking roles" there is a reason for it.. Gina Carano was a MMA with some acting roles in her past. She was brought in for her MMA skills and they limited her speaking parts for her role.

Hit & Run

Pretty funny, safe, car porn/action comedy with Dax Shepherd and Kristen Bell. Still hot. Worth watching because it's not terrible and Kristen Bell is hot. Of all people, Tom Arnold actually provides the most laughs.

The Debt - I was on board with this for the first 98% of the film then the ending happened and I was :wtf: I just don't see why Hollywood always feels the need to wrap everything in a tight little bow by pandering to the audience.

Hooray Helen Mirren killed the bad guy! Big deal she already committed to letting the truth get out we didn't need to see her kill the 90 year old man, in fact I think that really took away from the notion of her admitting the truth.

50/50 - I already reviewed this one but watched it again with my GF this weekend and it is a perfect example of Hollywood not pandering to the audience.

The studio wanted them to film Gordon-Levitt and Kendrick kissing at the end of the film but everyone on the production thought that would diminish the main theme of the movie which was his struggle against cancer. So what did they do? They didn't even film a take with a kiss because they knew if they did the studio would use it.
Really good film and an excellent ending.

Magic Mike. Sucked, didn't even bother finishing it. I've often fantasized about being a male stripper and all those women grabbing me and shoving money in my banana hammock. This movie was short on those scenes and had a lot of really stupid dialogue and pointless plot.

Dredd

I decided to watch it because of its surprisingly high IMDB rating of 7.3. As soon as it started though I thought I was going to be watching a disaster. However I found myself liking it more and more as it went along. Olivia Thirlby stole the movie and prevented it from being a run of the mill action movie.

6.5/10.

yeah i realized that, but it still doesnt change the fact that she is not a good actor

watching the BBC series "Foyle's War" on Netflix. Really good show. I'm three episodes in and really enjoying the myster series. Each epside is maybe 90 minutes and set in Britain during WWII. The writing is excellent, pacing is unhurried and the lead actor - Michael Kitchen - is terrific in the role.

I like popcorn flicks as much as anything else (including most Nic Cage movies) and I thought it sucked, even as a brainless action flick. Everything was pretty bad, but the worst was the Ocean's 11 music they used through the action scenes which did not fit at all.

Opening scene was one of the best I've seen, but I turned it off as soon as she got in the car with that guy. Probably should have given it more of a chance (or FF'ed) but she's an awful actress and I couldn't take it.

Watched the Raid: Redemption. Its an Indonesian Action/Kung Fu movie. Solid fighting movie, with a obvious but cool concept; The city allows one Crime Lord to have his own building which is like 15 stories and he is free to do whatever he wants to in that building with no repercussions. A police squad is trying to take him out and has to start from the bottom floor up.

7/10

On a lot of top 10's. I was bored after 30 minutes. Same stuff over and over.

A good action movie has interesting characters. I'm not big on lots of fighting so if I don't get pulled in by the characters I lose interest. On the other hand, good characters can make the fighting fun to watch.

Precisely. That ending was completely unnecessary.

Saw a few recently... Bourne, The Other Guys, and Hobbit. Liked all of 'em about equally... will try and come back in a bit with more.
