Just rewatched Fire in the Sky for the first time in like 10 years.Love that movie, can't wait for Dark Skies, hasn't been a good movie about aliens since Fire in the Sky
If there is one silly fear that I have, it would be alien abduction (mostly being awake during it/remember it). Fire in the Sky terrified me when I watched it. You are right if you are talking on those lines - typical grey aliens. Not sure I want to look to see what Dark Skies is. That said, I still thought Fourth Kind was quite bad. I figured that one would really get me.

An American CrimeI like Ellen Page as an actress but the torture scenes were cringe-worthy. Not sure I'd recommend this film if you're not into depressing films.3/5
The fact that this was based on a true story (IIRC) made this a little disturbing, but I thought it was good. And while I guess you would call what was done to her "torture", it was deprivation torture and not physical or violent torture (again IIRC). I thought Page and Catherine Keener were both real good in this. Had a bit of a made-for-TV movie feel to it but I thought it was worth the watch.
There were some beatings in it but I'd classify it more abuse than it was torture. Still an entertaining movie IMO.

Sound City (movie doc directed by Dave Grohl)I liked most of the documentary with the storytelling behind the soundboard. Got kinda sloppy/boring after Grohl's tirade on Protools. (analog versus digital recording debate)3.5/5 Worth the watch.

interested in this since seeing Grohl on Letterman with the Sound City AllStars. twas great to see Stevie Nicks sing a real song again.

The Girl Who Leapt Through TimeThe only anime I ever watch is stuff that gets great reviews. Even then I'm usually hesitant. This a good one though. Nice story, good plot twist. Give it a shot and you'll probably like it. 4/5

Awesome, didn't notice that had leakedDave's gotten to be a bit of a phony but pop music has gone to absolute #### since pro tools.

Cook, Thief, Wife and Lover - One of the worst movies I've ever seen.
if you aren't ready for it then it will totally suck. it is a very specific film. i remember it taking me able half the film to understand the accents. i'd probably go with it subtitled now as a precaution.
The scenes I've seen remind me of Moulin Rouge. That is not a compliment.
Worth a watch, IMO, especially if you don't know Greenaway's work. Worth it for his command of the visuals to tell his story- like moving/talking old-masters' painting come to life... Vermeers or some of the other Dutch masters who use color and light/darkness so well. I think you'll appreciate that aspect of it, JD.But the stories tend to be self-serving gross-outs rife with lots of sex=violence, nudity (often of people you dn't want to see nude), and bodily functions of all kinds.Funny- I didn't notice the accents... but maybe because Helen Mirren is nude for 90% of it (including a romp in offal- no joke).eta: but yeah- his films tend to be polarizing much like Solondz and Von Trier.
I see. I like Solondz. Don't like Von Trier. I have a feeling the 20 year old me would have loved Cook.
We're mirror images. I love Von Trier and Greenaway (and 20? years ago me loved Cook Thief Wife Lover) but can't stand post-Welcome-to-the-Dollhouse Solondz.

Cool song. I like
a Nirvana-minus-Cobain does with Paul McCartney on this album/soundtrack as well. Interested to hear the whole thing.

Wasteland: Documentary about artist Vik Muniz and his visit to the biggest landfill in the world in Brazil, Rio de Janeiro.

He helps the "pickers" of recyclable materials by creating art from the exact stuff they pick everyday and sells it to help their organization.

I really liked this as I love a good documentary.
Reviewed this a couple of years ago and still can't recommend it highly enough.
Switched to HBO from Showtime so have a bunch of movies to watch finally. Caught Margret last night (written and directed by Kenneth Lonnergan w/ Anna Pacquin, Matt Damon, Mark Ruffalo, Jean Reno). Fantastic cast and fantastic casting- some superfluous/self-involved direction, particularly with his use of slow-motion. I wanted to like this- a lot of it felt honest in terms of dialogue and interaction and the acting felt honest too, but I ####### hated every self-involved character in it. Maybe that's a success for the movie in eliciting fairly strong emotions from me... even if most of them revolved around being annoyed.
Nobody else saw this? It affected me- want to see how others felt about it.
:kicksrock: oh well. K4?
Sorry. :( I've seen very few movies lately.
Dead Man........I wanted to like it. I liked Ghost Dog. I love the soundtrack. I just didn't feel it. I wasn't in a right mood to watch it; so I'll watch it again. But the initial reivew is...meh.
Definitely try it again; you're right that you have to be in a certain mood for it, but if you are, it's outstanding.

John Dies At The End

I knew nothing about this going in so I didn't know what to expect. After watching it I don't that even if I knew what to expect that it would have been what I expected. Throw any adjective you want at it - weird, odd, bizarre, random - and I don't think it does it justice. I'm not even sure how to rate it except WTF/10 (in a good way). Found out later that it's based on a book by Cracked.com's David Woo. All I can say is if you like campy sci-fi/horror films and aren't easily disgusted you should watch it.
I would have expected John to die at the end of the film.
:lmao:

Sinister:

Not exactly sure what it's saying, but this is probably as good a horror movie as you are going to get in the last few years. More on the lines of stuff like Stir of Echoes. Ethan Hawke plays a writer researching a murder of a family and the girl who went missing that night. The creepiest stuff was the 'evidence' he finds in the attic. Thought they could have done a better job with the monster and I think they telegraphed the ending a little too much, but overall I think most fans of the genre would dig this one.

I recommend the Mark Maron interview of Solondz. Kind of funny that Solondz is genuinely surprised that none of his movies have been commercial hits.

The Bourne Legacy - Not sure why it got mixed reviews on Rotten Tomatoes; thought it was very good.Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows - Couldn't follow the plot for about the first half of the movie. I'm a fan of Guy Ritchie, but this was not his best work.To Rome with Love - Huge woody allen fan, but this was one of the 'lesser woody films'. TBS a 'lesser wa film' is still pretty good.

The Man With The Iron Fists: Not much of a story and some pretty terrible writing but a visual feast and great soundtrack. 3.5/5

Skyfall: Really liked. Every action movie wishes it could compare to Bond. Loved how they went back to the roots of Bond and how they transitioned into the new characters. 4.5/5

FYI.. If you didn't like Live Free or Die Hard .. do not and I repeat DO NOT see A Good Day to Die Hard.

As most know I am a Action Film junky.. LOVED "Live free".. This one..

Really seemed they came up with action scenes for it and then threw some lines in..

The Plot line seemed like it could have been good, but they tried way to hard to have a bad guy.. only to be revealed later he really isn't the bad guy .. THIS GUY IS!!.. Only to reveal, wait just a second, he might not be as bad as you think.. Oops yes he is. Although he is bad for a reason.. complete :loco:

My order as it stands now.. 1...4..2..3................5

With all the comments above I may have to re-watch 3..

Something about it just didn't sit right to me the first time through and I've never returned to re-watch it to see if it was my mood at the time I saw it, or if I truly didn't care for it.

Interesting. The first DH is the best, but the one with SL Jackson is second best IMO. 2nd and 4th are pretty "meh" to me.

Had to add this from a review from a critic as it covers it all:
A Good Day to Die Hard is the Superman IV: The Quest for Peace of the Die Hard series. It is Jaws: The Revenge, The Next Karate Kid, and that movie where Jason Voorhees kills people in a spaceship. It is Jar Jar Binks, Batman's oversized codpiece, and Indiana Jones escaping an atomic blast by hiding in a refrigerator.
:lmao: and :goodposting:

My don't people like DH2? Granted, nothing was ever going to live up to the first one, which is one of the greatest movies in the history of movies, but it was still good to me. The 3rd was definately better than 2, but I think that is because SLJ and the bad guy were so damn good. I rewatched the 4th on TV again this weekend. I enjoy that one a lot. I really don't go to the movies that much anymore so I probably won't see the 5th until it's on TV or DVD, but to me, it's John McLain. I'm good for about 2 hours just enjoying it.

I really liked Sound City but I'm a geek like that. If you are too, I recommend the VH1 Classic Albums docs for Rumours, Torpedoes, and Nevermind as well. Assuming you can still find them.

Looking forward to Sound City...Dave Grohl is great...Was just watching The West WIng this AM and realized they were on it in Season 7, playing at the election night party

Just got back from the theater.I liked Die Hard 1, 3, and 4.This new one is crap. There are three action scenes: 1) A vomit inducing, shaky-cam filmed car chase scene2) A helicopter shooting at a building3) A helicopter shooting at a buildingAdd to that that there is no humor whatsoever and it is a big middle finger to all fans of the series. But it's worth a rental - sometime after you've seen Eat, Pray, Love.Edit: Oh, and I don't know which is worse, Die Harder or Temple of Doom.

I enjoyed DH2 a lot. And it's got the dad from Good Times playing a bad ###!

 I like #2 enough.. Lot's of action and the story line is fun..I was really hoping #5 would build on #4.. Sure #4 had some  moments, but the storyline was interesting to me.. The new one's story line is just a big old mess.. Seemed like they said.. "Hey we need this to happen.. but in order for that to happen we have to throw in this line".. The humor and "fun" was missing IMO.
Really feels that they will at least try to go with #6 based on the ending where Father, daughter and son are all together again.

Bruce has just looked so old and frail (when compared to the action star he is/was) in the last few movies I have seen him in. Does he appear this way in his newest DH flick?

 he is playing a father of two 20+ year old children.. that is bound to age you ;) The preview for Red 2 looked good though.

Oh snap! I remember being sad when he "died".

I don't think he's said. I read this article that makes it seems like he got a good deal on because he was going to use it.
How much did you pay for the Neve Console? Not as much as you’d think. I didn’t even ask how much it cost. I said I’d like to buy the board, and I don’t care what you charge me for it. I’m just going to get it because it’s that important to me. It’s funny, in 1973 it cost $75,000. So you do the math and you’d imagine, does that mean it’s $1 million today? And it wasn’t. Because of the history this thing has within its wires, you would imagine it to be priceless and in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. But that’s not what those boards are for. Those boards should be used. I know a lot of people that collect gear and they have boards like that that have recorded incredible albums and they’re just in storage somewhere. That sucks. If you buy a vintage Ferrari, don’t keep it in your garage, get it out there. That’s what it’s for. So the board, we really wanted to make sure that we put the board to use, and we did right out of the gate, we were like [claps hands to a beat].

Saw Amour on the weekend. I thought it was a definite step down from his last 2 original films, Cache and White Ribbon; Amour culminates with much less ambiguity than those films and I felt as if the ending was inevitable, which was not something I felt at all in Cache or White Ribbon. The acting, cinematography, and dialogue were all great like your standard Haneke film, but overall I just didn't find Amour to be all that interesting; was the first time Haneke's measured pace ever bothered me. Still really happy that Haneke was recognized by the Academy in multiple eminent categories though.

Almost caught up on all the craptacular movies from the last year....

Total Recall: Action for the sake of action and none of it that good. The only thing that compares well to the original is the three boobed woman. Without Biel and Beckinsale it would have been terrible. 2/5

Battleship: A little better than what I expected though still pretty ridiculous. I'm no physics expert but I'm pretty their timeline, and entire premise, is outta wack. Their planet G is 22 light years away (according to wiki) so their super signal beaming satellite would have at best taken 22 years to get its message there. But asides from that... yeah, pretty ridiculous. A few good scenes wrapped around a lot of garbage. 2.5/5

I liked Sucker Punch but after its over you will think of a million things that could have made the story better. The visuals are fantastic.

i have "sucker punch" at home waiting a viewing. should i just skip it?
Not a fan. For all the stuff that's going on in the movie I found it really...dull. I wanted to like it but I just didn't.
I tend to agree. Visually interesting with tons of action but Snyder did a terrible job creating any sort of tension.
girl-on-girl? are there pillow fights? hair pulling?
That would have been an entirely different and much better movie. :kicksrock:

Argo. Very good
I would take it a notch down and say it was 'good'. The good:1. It really is a good story. 2. Affleck does a great job with tense scenes, humorous scenes, and the ability to jump between them seamlessly. The Bad:1. Affleck's character (or was it just his acting). Completely flat and boring the whole movie. 2. The completely "Hollywood" last 20 minutes. It felt to me like the actual story didn't end exciting enough for them, so they went into standard action movie mode.
We have the typical action tropes in the last scene at the airport - van not starting, problem with the doors for the bad guys, cop cars chasing them down the tarmac, producers almost not getting to the phones, etc, etc. That combined with the over the top scenes of him coming home.
Still a movie worth a viewing, but the problem with a movie like this and rating them becomes what sticks with me is the last part I was watching, and that definitely took the movie down a notch. Just the type of stock movie that the Academy drools over.

Oh yeah, it also seemed silly to have a montage of pics showing how close they were to the actors looking like the real people and how accurate some of the shots/scenes when the only glaring thing they didn't seem to care about was white break Ben Affleck playing a Latino man.
