I know this is for rentals, but whatever: Saw "Now you see me" last night. Enjoyable caper movie.

For those that saw it: I could have done without the final two minutes of the movie. It was essentially an ending for dumb people (especially dumb romantics). It felt tacked on, like target audiences were confused, so they had to do one last wrap up. Sooooo stupid.

Otherwise, I would give it a solid 7.5/10.
Took my son to see Star Trek, and he loved the trailer for Now You See Me. Is that movie appropriate for an 10 year old?
Sure. And absolutely, if he could watch Star Trek. There isn't any sex in the movie, really (a little tension between Eisenberk and his former assistant). There is action but nothing on the level of star trek. If you are looking for a movie to compare it to (as far as appropriateness), the best comparison is Oceans 11. But it wasn't nearly as good. After I thought about it a bit, I was a little annoyed by the plot holes.

The Impossible - 8/10

Really enjoyed this one. The tsunami effects were really well done and the performances (especially by the three young kids - wow were they good) are top notch. Highly recommended.

Agreed and I thought it was as good as the other nominated films of 2012.

Unfortunately the completely spoiled the ending in the trailer.
Well, that and the fact that it's based on a true story.
Based on a true story just means that someone who was involved survived and was able to put the pieces together.

The Perfect Storm spoiler below to illustrate the point

The Perfect Storm is based on a true story but Marky Mark still croaks.

Am I the only one that thought 28 Days Later was really bad? No back story or reason for caring about the main characters is given at all? And the adult soldiers are in full Lord of the Flies mode in just 1 month, ready to rape the first civilians they see? And if the infected aren't eating humans or regular food, what are they eating? Seemed to me like the script/story was really underdeveloped, with there being a number of plot holes, particularly once they got to the military base.
I liked it a lot
Yeah after searching this thread, it seems the significant majority of people in here loved it, and most critics loved it too. Wasn't expecting to dislike it as much as I did.
Is your review partially colored by zombie burnout? I really don't ever need to see another zombie movie.
Nope, I can't even think of any other zombie movies I've seen besides I Am Legend. 28 Days Later just reminded me a lot of Danny Boyle's other film Sunshine, too many distracting plot holes, and whatever good was done in the first half of the film is made almost irrelevant by a terribly haphazardly done final half. At least Sunshine looked great, 28 Days Later did not, outside of the opening scenes in the empty streets.
I would have loved Sunshine were it not for that superfluous antagonist.

Cool. I always thought Ocean's 11 was pretty overrated.

Jack ReacherI went into this with little knowledge of the movie. I'd seen a trailer months ago, but that was forgotten.I have to say that this is yet another solid Tom Cruise thriller.Very well done.
Caught this recently, and have previously read the book ("One Shot") it's based on.

My biggest problem was that you found out 5 minutes in that Barr wasn't really the shooter. The book doesn't reveal that until Reacher figures it out.
I thought they handled the total mismatch of physical size between the books' Reacher and Cruise reasonably well, but I think the fight scenes had to become a bit more gimmicky since Tom's not 6-5 and 260.

Agreed. Compare those tsunami effects to that horrible movie with Matt Damon as a psychic. I was astonished at how real the scenes with her caught in it looked- impressed with how they achieved it in the dvd special features.

The Place Beyond the Pines.

Was kind of like two movies squished together. First half was compelling. Second half was a different movie that wasn't. Didn't really care for Cooper's performance at all. They should have just made a tight 90-minute version of the first act.

5/10
I agree with your rating. I thought the final third was kinda pointless and was too happenstantial/melodramatic for my liking. Though I thought Bradley Cooper was great and the middle part in which he starred was the best part of the film; was the only part of the film with much of a character arc I thought.

I thought it was very interesting and the scenes post tsunami were very powerful but the ending was terribly saccharine and I really struggled with liking Ewan McGregor's character after

He just leaves his two youngest children with a stranger in a devastated landscape with no idea where they would end up to go randomly and haphazardly search for his wife and eldest son who were far more likely to be dead than alive.
That's real father of the year stuff right there.

That's not exactly true. He knew where they were going. But the fact that he left them with an apparently total stranger is a bit problematic.

And they did come back together in a bit too convenient of a fashion - but it is only a movie and there's such a thing as economy of storytelling. I wonder how it really happened though.

Just watched Lives of Others, simply outstanding 10/10.
Also did a lot of reading up on the oppression that East Germany was facing because of the Stasi, I love learning history through films. The initial scene was supposed to be at a Stasi interrogation room, but they didnt have permission to film in the real Stasi building since the people in charge of it felt it wasnt in their best interest to allow a Stasi character to play the hero in the film so they used another building.

Very cool to learn that anyone can search the Stasi Archives to find out if they were being monitored at all, I think the number was only 10% of people have tried to find out if they were being monitored.

That's fascinating. On a similar note, did you ever see Night Crossing? Others is a better movie, but both cover similar thematic material. If you have kids 10 or older, Night Crossing's a pretty exciting movie and not too scary or violent.

When it came out in theaters I thought there was no way I would watch it but after some decent reviews, I decided to give Gangster Squad a shot. I wish I would have stuck with my initial impression because this was beyond bad. Typical generic Hollywood version of a mob story. The acting was horrid. It's hard to think of a worse performance by Sean Penn and Ryan Gosling was just laughable. The dialogue was silly, with all the clichés squeezed into every line. "Who's the tomato?" "I'm gonna go bend an elbow while you guys bend your ears" This is to The Godfather what network television is to cable shows now a days. Some people might like this but I want more realism in a mob movie. This had none. .5/5 only because I like to look at Emma Stone.

eta: only made it an hour in before shutting it off.

Jack Reacher - 7/10

Kind of fun. Cruise seems to be picking "safe" movies these days. This seemed like a small role for him and he's a little miscast.

But it was entertaining. And Rosamund Pike's chest is perfect.

Marnie - 8/10

I liked this better than The Birds and NBNW, but not Vertigo. I enjoyed Tippi Hedren's performance quite a bit.

How did I ever miss Diane Baker as an actress? Her IMDB entry shows that she's been in a million shows. Man, is she smokin' in this movie.

And people aren't kidding when they talk about Hitch's problem with women, are they?

Super 8

I liked this alot the first time. Seeing it a second time, I think I love this movie. Say what you want about the final act, but these child actors are fantastic. Just a lovely movie about growing up that happens to be ensconced in a sci fi wrapping.

So we saw Hansel and Gretel Witch Hunters. Not the worst movie but not really good. For successful witch hunters they sure got their butts handed to them a lot. Better to be lucky than good I guess. Obviously setup for more as this was an origin story but really I don't see why they'd bother. Never felt any tension and the big bad was neither really. The whole thing just came across as lazy film making.

The Place Beyond the Pines - 8/10 - Wasn't sure what to expect after seeing the previews for this movie, but it was solid. Started a little slow, but got moving 1/4 way through. Pretty original story with some twist.

want to try this one again. was really disappointed in it, but it all started with the overly cgi train wreck and I realize the old fart in me has too little patience with that, and need to work on that. also remember the ending being cheesy too.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower, 7/10

decent film with great performances from the 3 main actors but I didnt feel the emotional connection with the main kid for some reason throughout. Dont feel like they used Paul Rudd at all, he had nothing to do in the film besides just keep handing the kid books, that character should have been a little more involved in the story IMO.

The ending is definitely cheesy. But I think this movie is worth watching just for the interaction between the kids.

Cloud Atlas- It took awhile to get going and never did quite bring everything together like I had hoped it would. But it was still pretty captivating to watch six stories unfold at the same time. Crash always gets brought up as a similar movie but it reminded me more of a cross between The Fountain and Babel. It just felt more heavy-handed at the end. ("Yet, what is any ocean but a multitude of drops?") 6.5/10

Compliance- Disturbing but an interesting take on how the power of "authority" can make ordinary people do heinous things. I know there was a small discussion on it earlier in this thread and it pretty much summed up how I felt. I don't think I'd watch it again but I would recommend it to anyone who can sit through deeply awkward situations to analyze patterns of human behavior. 7.5/10

OZ The Great and Powerful - Does a nice job creating a backstory to the Wizard of Oz. Broadens the scope of the story, and IMO is worthy of being connected to the classic film. Visually stunning, nice special effects. Acting is sub-par. Mila Kunis seems like bad casting for her role. Doesn't put you on the edge of your seat at any moment. Good family entertainment but a little scary for kids under 7. Mild thumbs up for me. 7/10

What do you get if you replace the women in Bridesmaids with 4 completely unfunny, negative, hateful #####es that you probably wouldn't want to spend 5 minutes with, let alone watch a 90min movie about? Bachelorette. Don't know if it got any better, as I lasted only about 30mins into this POS. Probably not many of you were anxious to see this one, but avoid watching this one - don't get sucked in by the hot Isla Fisher like I did.
Yea I completely disagree. This is the movie I thought Bridesmaids was going to be (based on the previews). Its The Hangover with girls. Its really funny.

Continuing through the Hitchcock movies I've checked out from the library...

Shadow of a Doubt - 7.5/10

Supposedly AH's personal favorite...and another one that I enjoyed. Had a bit of a "Night of the Hunter" to it.

I think Young Charlie is my favorite Hitch heroine so far.

 filmed in my home town.

Too tired to do a search- apologies.

I'm sure Stoker was seen in here... thoughts? We just watched it and I had high hopes, but it felt pretty flat to me. Not enough tension/suspense, IMO and oddly not enough violence. Also felt like some of the scenes were pretty formulaic and cliched. But beautifully filmed.

I managed to get through a couple of the new movies that I wanted to see, and didn't enjoy them much - Stoker and Cloud Atlas. Both were beautifully shot, but neither clicked with me.

We will see how far I get into the list, but I had the desire to keep hacking away at old movies that I have not seen at all, or in very rare cases saw eons ago and don't remember much. This time I thought about trying a list by year. The 1930s didn't seem to have enough that I wanted to see to do something like this, so I started with 1940. Gonna try for 3 from each year - I already see that this will be pushing it for a couple of years that seem weak. Will try to mix up genres as much as possible too.

Started off with: His Girl Friday and Pinocchio from 1940 and The Maltese Falcon from 41.

One of the things that grates on me a little is the quick paced monotone delivery the actors of the time have in the older movies. There was a few funny scenes in His Girl Friday, but I think what held it back for me was how fast the delivery was compounded by the number of people talking at the same time. Grant as always was great. I could see greatness there, but for me it was slightly above average - 6/10. Pinocchio is a movie I don't think I have seen for at least 25 years. Watched it on bluray and thought some of the scenes/animation looked great and held up - mostly the quiet scenes in the shop. Some of the stuff looked it's age - the whale and scnenes with a lot of movement. Watched it with my 6 year old and he loved it mostly because of the physical humor, for me I think I am too used to modern animated movies. A few of the older Disney movies start to bore me a little, since they really feel like experiments - animated scenes set to music, but plots are a tad thin to hold up for almost 90 mins. Loved the experience still - 7/10. Maltese Falcon was brilliant. Loved the performances, the feel of the movie, and the fact that Spade was such a complicated anti-hero. Easily at the top of the list for movies during this era - 9/10.

Next up I have a movie I have been curious about for awhile (The Wolf Man), and a couple from 1942 that I really know nothing about: To Be Or Not To Be and This Gun for Hire.

From my brief research, 1945 and 47 are going to be a chore.

I felt the same way. It is really weird that a movie so gorgeously shot and well acted could feel so flat. Was hoping for something new, but it just felt like a slightly more graphic/twisted Hitchcock rehash.

Upstream Color

Fans of Tree of Life and Shane Carruth's first flick Primer will like/love Upstream Color, those who don't fall in that category will undoubtedly dislike/hate it. An unabashed perplexing film, with a lot of allusion and subtext; a good deal of which flew over my head I'm sure. Still, I enjoyed trying to wrap my head around it while watching it, and am still enjoying such attempts after the film has completed. I also thought the soundtrack was great, and really elicited some emotion to what would have otherwise been an overly meticulous film. I recommend it.
Finally caught Upstream Color. Went in cold, knowing nothing about it other than "from the dude that made Primer", which I also went into cold. Primer made more sense on the first viewing having known nothing about it. This movie is more complicated, in a different sort of way. I enjoyed Primer more.

Carruth certainly likes to just film people looking at nothing in particular. I think there's an entire act without dialogue. I agree, if you hated Primer, you can probably skip this one.

Don't get me wrong, I didn't hate this movie, but I just wasn't as blown away as I was with Primer. Can't say I loved it, either.

Seeking a Friend for the End of the World The kindest, most gentle, humanistic apocalyptic movie you could imagine. Its tone is out of synch with the background events, but I think that works in what it is trying to convey. Keira Knightley and Steve Carrell are perfectly cast as the everymen searching for meaning and solace as the end of the world nears. Its not without its flaws, particularly the third act, but overall a winning effort for me. 3.88/5 stars
Just watched this.

I agree with the critique of the third act - it wasn't perfect. I wish they would have done a couple things differently to get to the inevitable ending. But overall, I loved this movie. It was great.
Thought it was one of the worst movies I've seen in a while.

Thanks for this recommendation. Solid movie. We had the same issue as in the spoiler. Great tsunami effects and I really wished it went on a little longer. 3/5

Watched "The Call" with Halle Berry the other night. Pretty good movie. Better than alot of the crap out there right now.

7/10

All the King's Men (1949) - 9/10

This movie is outstanding. It has an exciting pace (which is my main problem with most other older movies - pacing) yet subtleties that add nuance to the sledgehammer character.

My new favorite piece of movie trivia is the actress who played (and did an outstanding job in her movie debut) the character Sadie is Mercedes McCambridge - who also did the voice of the demon in The Exorcist.

I'm slowly coming around on movies made pre-'75...
