I was pleasantly surprised by this. One of my favorites of the year. Nice cast with Will Forte, Stacy Keach, Saul Goodman and Bruce Dern as the alcoholic father. It's quite humorous. I particularly liked the air compressor bit. It's a shame this will be overlooked with The Hobbit out.

Anybody else watching The Returned on IfC or Sundance?
I shudder to bring up The Killing- the visuals and mood are very similar (which works) but the writing and overall story are lightyears better. One of the better things on TV right now, IMO.
Without giving anything away- takes place in a French Alps town about people coming back from the dead. I'm 5 or 6 episodes in and the typcial 3rd of 4th episode
sequence of events or lazy writing to cover up the initial good idea has yet to happen. Still very creepy, beautfully shot, written and acted without a single hiccup to speak of (except for two characters refusing to have the obvious conversation... although that can be excused as "real" writing, I guess).

So ironic watching Sly fight with the noble Afghan rebels knowing that back then Osama Bin Laden was on our side against the evil Russians. But screw all that, the best thing about this movie is Sly's 1,000 unique grunts. Every strenuous physical act, everything, is accompanied by a special monosyllabic bellow. So, did Sly go in the sound studio like a jazz saxophonist and rattle off hundreds of special grunts? Or were they all spontaneous on the set? Either way, these grunts would make for a great drinking game.

I liked this movie the first time around. But it's a bit weird, so I didn't love it. Second time around, I've decided I love it. I think kids 10 and up will enjoy it, and adults can enjoy it on an entirely different level. Excellent adaptation that could not have been easy to pull off.

Since the Spike Lee movie is coming out I decided to finally check out the original Oldboy. While I found the two major twists to be predictable, it was a solid movie. I actually expected a little more over-the-top violence but it was fairly muted. Great performance by the lead. Not sure if I need to see Lee's version now. 3/5
I liked Pacific Rim for what it was. A fun monster movie. I miss the old giant monsters on film and this wasn't bad. 2.5/5

Straight Time (1978)
This not one of Dustin Hoffman's best known movies, but his performance was a good as any other I've seen. He plays out of type and it's fun to watch him do things you normally wouldn't expect from him. A lot of great actors in this - Gary Busey, Harry Dean Stanton and M. Emmet Walsh knocks it out of the park as the worst parole officer in history.

I suggest finishing it. I don't disagree about the forced dialogue but I liked it a lot by the end and like you wanted to turn it off early.

The beginning is just setting everything up basically. Id almost say its forced because that is how most of the rest of the movie is the opposite.
Ive seen bad movies, but why someone like JDogg would shut this off that early I have no idea (besides the explanation, but u didnt even give it a chance).

Oh yeah, we tried watching Killing Them Softly but admittedly we were both hammered. My wife is a big Pitt (and Clooney) fan. I think the movie is worth it just to see Gandolfini's performance. Yes, he's playing himself but he just does it so damn well. He destroys Pitt in their head to head scenes. And I think Pitt is a good actor. The funniest part of the movie was when Gandolfini did a very long monologue and at some point they did a cutaway to Brad Pitt just standing there. Saying nothing as the monologue went on. My wife said "Thank you! Show the pretty face!" They eventually went back to Gandolfini. It was clearly done in post and was actually a distraction. Can't say much about the movie as we pretty much talked over it all. Seemed pretty boring.

Watched them both a while back on Netflix. I liked The Fall MUCH better, although Top Of The Lake seemed to get a little better as I stuck with it for a few episodes.

Not a guy movie but was very well done. I thought the acting was good and even though Jennifer Connelly is showing signs of aging she is still nice to look at.

American Hustle - Gotta be honest, I was expecting more, maybe it's the kind of film that will grow on me with future viewings but I left the theater entirely underwhelmed. It's well acted and they absolutely nailed the make-up and costume design but the pacing was kinda slow and, while the "hustle" was okay (I guess) I found the story telling to be somewhat meandering with a lot that seemed irrelevant. On a first viewing it's not best picture material IMO.
However from an acting standpoint Amy Adams was incredible. She commanded virtually every scene she was in, and her low cut outfits did a lot of commanding in my pants. Jennifer Lawrence was also excellent but I almost didn't see any point to her character. Bale, Renner, Cooper etc. everyone did a really excellent job which makes my lukewarm feelings about the film overall kind of surprising to me. Still I found it to be only okay.
Will watch again on video to see if it gets better.

A little overrated both critically and among audiences imo. The lead actor was pretty great, and I thought just about all the characters were portrayed pretty realistically, save the Octavia Spencer character, but really there was nothing in this film that you haven't seen before. And the film's overall realism unfortunately made the highly melodramatic parts all the more unbearable, particularly the the scenes at the end. Same exact thing with some of the script being real bad/melodramatic sticking out a lot compared to the rest of the film. Still a solid flick though. 3.5/5.

My initial impression of the movie was that it was made just for straight entertainment, but it actually had some important things to say and it went about saying these things in an intelligent way, while remaining entertaining throughout imo. An impressive directional debut from Gordon-Levitt. Some real big laughs in this too. One of my favourites of the year. 4.5/5.

Movie was 75% on the money. They should have cut out the Liv Tyler character and developed the relationship with the son even more. I did like that they didn't pull any punches and make Langella some redeeming dad in the end. I wish they would have had more time with Frank and the Robot going over Frank's life and regrets. Then in the end the son downloads the robots memory and gets to know his father a bit.
I actually didn't see the Sarandon twist coming. Wish that scene would have pulled the heart-strings more. They needed to do a bit more with that.
So cut Liv Tyler. More time with the robot and the son. Maybe another heist for comic relief. Develop the Sarandon reveal.

Ender's Game
Man, I loved this movie. What a surprise. Mrs. Dogg read the book to my son, and she said it's very good. I believe it. If you hold this up to many of the recent comic book movies, for example, Ender's Game is better by a wide margin. Very good acting by all the young people, and a story that is smart. Big thumbs up.

They did a terrible job marketing his, IMO. Looked pretty generic and cheesey, so I"m glad to hear that it's worth a watch. The book was a classic (at least when I read it a million years ago) so I'm surprised they mangled what should have been an easy lead-in from the readers.

I am definitely going to watch it again, it was layered enough that I think you can take away more from repeat viewings.
