you feeling alright, jdogg?? off the weed?

cant get through the way way back but rambo 3 kept your interest? cabin in the woods was only 1/3 good but enders game gets the thumbs up?

starting to worry about you, brother. ;)

Ender's Game

Man, I loved this movie. What a surprise. Mrs. Dogg read the book to my son, and she said it's very good. I believe it. If you hold this up to many of the recent comic book movies, for example, Ender's Game is better by a wide margin. Very good acting by all the young people, and a story that is smart. Big thumbs up.
They did a terrible job marketing his, IMO. Looked pretty generic and cheesey, so I"m glad to hear that it's worth a watch. The book was a classic (at least when I read it a million years ago) so I'm surprised they mangled what should have been an easy lead-in from the readers.
I'm trying not to hype it too much. But I think it's very entertaining.

Rambo 3 is awful. But it's that special kind of awful that's glorious. Cabin get huge thumbs up for concept and final act.

Europa Report

This is another found footage movie that moves pretty slow. Not a whole lot of suspense and a super lame ending involving a space octopus (not worthy of a spoiler IMO). Very weak overall. 1.5/5

Anybody else watching The Returned on IfC or Sundance?

I shudder to bring up The Killing- the visuals and mood are very similar (which works) but the writing and overall story are lightyears better. One of the better things on TV right now, IMO.

Without giving anything away- takes place in a French Alps town about people coming back from the dead. I'm 5 or 6 episodes in and the typcial 3rd of 4th episode  sequence of events or lazy writing to cover up the initial good idea has yet to happen. Still very creepy, beautfully shot, written and acted without a single hiccup to speak of (except for two characters refusing to have the obvious conversation... although that can be excused as "real" writing, I guess).
??
Yes, it's a great show but prepare to be disappointed by the cliffhanger ending and the long wait until next episodes get made.

wasn't disappointed at all- thought the show stayed strong through the finale. I wasn't looking for answers- just continued quality writing, acting and cinematography... thought it succeeded on all fronts.

only disappointment is that it was only 8 episodes long, and yeah- if there's a long wait for the next season. IMO, best show on TV.

I liked it, however in hindsight I wished I'd waited until next November for the new episodes before I started watching it. The 8 episodes were great but way too short of a season for this show.

ummmm. a full YEAR before we see new episodes? well ####.

Insidious 2 - if you liked the first one you'll like this. As with the first one I wanted to like it more than I did and found myself FFing near the end just to get it over with.

Revenge of the Nerds - better than I remembered it, a true classic.

CBGB - love punk but the movie was as boring.

The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension - I saw this who knows how many times as a kid and for some reason I remember it being a funny but halfway serious sci-fi movie but watching it now it's pure comedy. 99% of the comedy must have gone over my head at age 12-14.

So saw Man of Steel last night. Got to say I really liked what they did with it and I am not a huge Superman fan. I believe someone mentioned the fight scenes kind of dragged and at points they did. But overall not a bad reboot and perhaps the best Superman since Reeves. Dude certainly looked the part.
Saw MoS this weekend with my ten year old son, who is a big avengers fan. He got bored with it halfway through. It got better, but overall we were both disappointed. I like the different take on how things happened with Lois and it's actually easier to believe. it just pales in comparison to the movies marvel has been putting out. 3/5

LOVE this one. Completely bizarre comic-book style... totally agree- mostly a comedy. "john big booty"... "big boo-TAY.. boo-TAY"

eta: agree about Nerds too- definitely a classic.

I stll HIGHLY recommend this show to you peeps.

Saw American Hustle. I see a little of what Chake was referring to but it's still a pretty damn good movie. Solid to great acting performances all around (JLaw is very good and so hot). Even Louis CK did a bang up job.

Don Jon - 2/5

I've been curious about this for a while and I finally got to see it. What a disappointment. It took a long time to tell a simple message. I hated everyone in it except Julianne Moore. Everyone else was just an #######.

Saw Drinking Buddies. Was an interesting movie, not at all what I expected. People will either love this movie or pretty much find it to be a huge wast of time. I thought it was thought provoking and had some incredible performances from its two leads. Olivia Wilde can really act.
Put me on the huge waste of time side.
Watched this movie over the weekend. Wasn't bad and decently well acted by the leads. A solid character piece that handles an uncomfortable situation that many of us can relate to in a realistic way. One thing for sure is that any situation where you get to see Olivia Wilde's mammeries is not a huge waste of time.

No way she can be that fit and drink that much beer though - that part was tough to accept.

Hmmm.... Drifter has a thing for Jude Law- check.

(btw, gb- we stayed at Shoal Bay Villas for the first time ever over Thanksgiving... pretty great... but not sure how I'm ever going to pay off this trip).

nope... couldn't afford it (even though it's affordable relative to anything else similar).

1st floor pool-side, and they upgraded us to a 2BR.

but yeah- those beach-front rooms looked perfect.

eta: but tell me more about this crush on Jude Law.

Couple of quick bits

Watched the Madea Christmas movie, and it's comedy porn, as in you fast forward until you get to the parts with Madea. Likely the funniest reoccurring movie character of all time. Rest of the movie is eyerolling drivel and unworthy of your time. Madea and Get R Done guy have good comedic chemistry.

The Hobbit Smaug movie featured the best 3D I've seen in a major motion picture. Several scenes looked like a play was happening onstage. At its worst it had the definition of live television. Great stuff. If you're a semi-fan of those kinds of movies and you're on the fence....have the 3D experience. Soooooooo worth it.

Dangerous Days: The Making of Blade Runner

Probably the best making of film documentary I've ever seen (but I may be biased, as it is my favorite film, with Seven Samurai).

Saw Anchorman 2. First half of movie was a laugh out loud riot, the second half was pretty blah and just went on and on for too long.

I've never seen a Tyler Perry "movie." I fear if I do, I might commit suicide.

It's the equivalent to eating vanilla ice cream- sweet and tasty going down but plain and unspectacular overall. I've seen bits and pieces of many of Perry's Madea comedies(wifey likes them)and frankly they made me laugh in spite of myself. They are harmless fun and while they won't win any writing or acting awards they are still better made and funnier while being less crass than most comedy offerings out there today.

Oooh.. ill have to see this one.

Add Wings of Desire and The Third Man to those two and you have my rotating top 3 movies

I've never seen a madea movie. I avoid them for the woefully mistitled lead character (still waiting for"Tyler Perry's Madea murders her children") and because nothing from the commercials is remotely funny.

yes, if you click on blade runner: the final cut, look for the bonus material disc (you can request separately, with or without the film proper)... that contains the doc dangerous days. it covers the challenging pre-production and complicated three-part financing history, the many script iterations, important differences with the seminal philip k. **** novel/source material - do androids dream of electric sheep, casting (early on dustin hoffman was the choice for deckard before widening creative differences led to harrison ford), futuristic conceptual design (syd mead was a working industrial designer), art and set decoration (when director scott was introduced to the art director, he said, "too bad for you, mate."), why budget constraints led to the signature retrofit architecture look, the actual shoot of course, which had many difficulties (night, rain, smoke - it actually saved money that would have otherwise been needed to dress up the back lot sets, a necessity given the budget constraints... after one shoot when scott broke out a cigar, a set hand asked if he had smoke in his home! :) ), cinematography, special effects (probably the last great analog, in camera, sci fi effects film, arguably unsurpassed by CGI to date), music, the troubled post-production (the completion bond financiers took the film away from scott and his editor briefly before another principal financier, alan ladd, jr and warner brothers insisted they be restored to the project), how disappointing tests and critical reaction led to several variants almost immediately and its anticlimactically quick demise on its intitial release, and how home video and other factors led to its rediscovery, resurrection and critical reappraisal as a contemporary masterpiece that transcends genre boundaries*, arguably the greatest sci film ever, to this day hugely influential (helped spawn the literary cyberpunk genre) and maybe the most eerily prescient film of its era (and not just about the look, feel and style of the future).

youtube has a version split into three parts (not how the original is), but is missing the first part, if you want a taste. BTW, the three disc 30th anniversary edition (25th had five discs, including two DVDs) with all the versions and the doc on blu-ray is about $15 at amazon?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hFKpBsNEzfM

* la times film critic kenneth turan's (seen in the doc) '92 article below may have played some role in this rediscovery and reappraisal process...

Blade Runner 2 : The Screenwriter Wrote Eight Drafts--and Then Was Replaced. On His First Day, The Director Turned The Set Upside Down. Harrison Ford Was Never So Miserable. Years Later, Someone Stumbled Over The Long-lost Original. Nothing About This Cult Classic Was Ever Simple.

http://articles.latimes.com/1992-09-13/magazine/tm-1537_1_blade-runner-ridley-scott-orson-welles-othello

** i earlier got the basic blu-ray version of scott's prometheus, because i didn't have a 3-D player (and didn't intend to get one any time soon), but just decided to get the four disc special edition with unneeded 3-D disc, also now only about $15 at amazon, as it has a close to four hour making of doc absent on the basic edition... apparently not at netflix, and didn't see on youtube.

criterion has great making of docs. if you don't have them already, avail at netflix as second DVD, bonus disc content (criterion versions?) in the cases of both wings of desire and the third man.

It's the weirdest movie series I've ever seen. It would be like watching a horror movie where in between the mayhem they have 12 minute intervals where a character describes how to tie tennis shoes.

I might be more into the Madea character because of the surroundings I grew up in. I met so many Madea's in my lifetime that I've lost count. Tyler Perry just nails that character impossibly well. But then the rest of the movies (in between the Madea parts) are bits that were rejected by the Hallmark channel for being so hollow and unchallenging.

All terrible...

Meet the Millers

End of World

Lone Ranger

Elysium

2 Guns

The Heat

Grown Ups 2

Red 2

RIPD

Most we didn't even finish they were so bad. All mainstream type films from over the summer, most stunk.

That you say they are less crass resonates with me. Feels like the crass trend has hit its peak.

I think one reason for my aversion is I don't think men in women's clothes is funny. Last time I laughed at something like that was Monty Python back in 1980.

Kids "bought" me Star Trek Into Darkness so we did movie night last night and watched it again. Enjoyed it more. I'm really a fan of how they have redone the universe and all the references to nods to the old universe and story line. Which continues to surprise me because I originally hated the idea of using Khan, but it worked.

I thought 2 Guns was perfectly fine and Wahlberg and Denzel had some nice back and forths. I thought Grown Ups 1 was awful, I thought Grown Ups 2 was noticeably better. I was too drunk when I watched it to really say if that qualifies it as average though.

Ive never even entertained the thought of watching RIPD, The Heat, or Lone Ranger.

Actually made it through Melancholia and somewhat enjoyed it. Yeah, I fast-forwarded through parts of it and some aspects were unbelievable. Especially why did he actually agree to marry this lunatic in the first place. Very slow movie that just managed to keep us moving forward. My wife was real pissed at Keifer at the end. 3/5

Kirstin Dunst - real and spectacular!

Disappointed in Ted. Really good concept with poor execution. Seth MacFarlane was fine as Ted but Wahlburg was miscast, imo. He's not a good burnout. Even still, the script was weak, especially in the second half. I had hoped for more. 2/5

I could watch that movie five times and rate it anywhere for 1 to 5, depends on the mood I'm in.

I could see that. It caught us at a nice vibe. I thought that intro was going to be how the whole movie was going to be and wouldn't have made it through 2 1/2 hours of that. I'd put it right on par with Tree of Life. Enjoyed them both but they caught me at good times so that plays a lot into it.

I'm amazed that some people still like the depressing garbage from this director.
What can I say, some of us get bored by watching the good guy successfully save the world and getting the girl in every movie.

Hangover III wasn't bad. The funny moments didn't outweigh the unfunny ones though. Decent story. 2.5/5
2.5 seems right. I liked II better than I, but III suffers from the same issues most sequels do. Watched it last night and frankly, it completely lacked those outrageous moments that II had. It's almost like they knew they'd make money and got lazy. The ending 10 minutes or so was good in a wrap-this-up sort of way, but overall the movie lacked the qualities of the first two.

Those aren't the only options.

Tried to watch The Master three times and fell asleep every time.

I thought it was interesting to see Wahlberg in a different role, and didnt think he took away from the movie. I do think they couldve got a more "fitting" stoner though. Really anyone from the Franco, McBride, Hill, Rogen, Baruchel. There's plenty of others like JGL, Samberg, Galifianakis, Kutcher, Dax Shepard, Segel, Charlie Day, etc.

Im sure you could make a pretty long list of actors who wouldve made more sense than Wahlberg, so why he chose him I couldnt say, but like I said I dont think Wahlberg made the movie any less funny.
