Captain America: The Winter Soldier

Man, this movie rocked. I think the best Marvel films are Iron Man and The Avengers. I could argue this is the better movie. Top-notch action, like you'd expect. The hand-to-hand combat is some of the best you'll ever see in a movie. Set piece after set piece of fantastic action. A lot better than the first Captain America, and it makes the Thor movies look pretty weak.

Highly recommended.

I thought the first CA was maybe the worst major comic release of the past decade, so surprised by this.

I know I am in the minority, but to me captain america >>>> thor. I was so bored with those movies.

I didn't have a huge preference between Thor and the first Captain America. But this second film blows Thor out of the water. Thor has an excellent villain. But the action set pieces in CA are far better.

Star Trek Into Darkness. I am going to admit that I just really really like the new version of this story. How they paid respect to the original yet still give this new crew a life of their own not bogged down by having to do everything just the way the old universe did. I'm still not in love with the Kahn usage here simply because I really do idolize the original and don't want anything to interfere, but really they did a great job and Cumberbatch was great. In fact, I'm very happy they didn't kill him in the end. Tons of possible ways to go from there.

Man of Steel. I saw this on Imax when it came out. It was great in that format. On TV it loses just a little because you lose some of the bigness of the way they were trying to show certain scenes. But overall I still really like this movie.

Tim and Eric's Billion Dollar Movie

How many poop jokes can you make in one movie? This many.

I am torn about these guys. On one hand, they are silly in a way that cracks me up sometimes. But some of their material is so purposely disgusting and annoying, there are times I never want to give them another shot. These guys seems smart, and sometimes I wish the material was just a little smarter.

I liked both of these more than I thought I would. They both seem a little more "thoughtful" for the genre.

The Long Kiss Goodnight

Geena Davis and Samuel L. Jackson star in this action thriller about a CIA agent with amnesia. This must be the 10th time I've seen Goodnight, and I can't heap enough praise on this mess. I love it. A completely insane movie. There are scenes here that'll make you laugh out loud from the sheer silliness. The very definition of a guilty pleasure.

I watched Revenge of the Sith the other night. I have no problem with people ripping Phantom Menace and to a lesser degree, Attack of the Clones, but IMO Revenge of the Sith is pretty awesome with little to complain about. Everyone rips Lucas for the new ones, but I thought he hit the mark with Sith.

He did. My biggest problem with it, aside from the obviously terrible dialogue (better than the other two but still at times), is the excessive visuals. Every square inch of the screen is flashing and spinning and zipping past to the point that I was surprised that I didn't read about anyone having seizures. Even the awesome light saber fights are excessive and just go on forever. Yeah we get it, they're super awesome laser sword fighters just move on already.Despite many major flaws in the new trilogy, and my goodness there are so very many, Lucas did craft a credible backstory to the formation of the Empire and I do appreciate that.

This is my biggest complaint with all new movies, sensory overload. By the end of the 15th epic battle I'm just exhausted and want the ride to be over.

But seeing this new Captain America sequel, it puts Man of Steel to shame.

I had my doubts going in but I'll never doubt Aronofsky again. Brilliant movie.

There seems to be three types of people complaining about the movie - religious people who are angry that it's not by the book, atheists who are mad that it's about god and people for whom it seems to have gone over their heads.

It's an atheist's version of what possibly could have happened if there actually were a god and any of the Noah story were true.

Now You See Me

I sorta remember seeing previews for this but don't remember giving it any real thought. Turned it on right when it started and the chick was cute so I thought I would hang around and got hooked by the first illusion in Vegas. Wifeeven started watching and was glued. I must say that right until the moment that Mark Ruffalo and Morgan Freeman were in the cell together it was a really entertaining movie and I was having fun with it. But the Ruffalo ending killed alot of the good feelings I had. We both were convinced either he or his french partner were the real bad guy so that wasn't so much it - it just wasn't a good reveal to me. If I was going to give this a perfect 5 stars this knocked it down at least 1 star to me.

But the "magic" was cool, even though alot of it had an Ocean's 11 feel to it, but like I said, in the end, wife and I enjoyed it for the most part together. I would like to have a chat with Isla Fisher however. In private. For a good solid 4 minutes.

This is his most mainstream movie. I'd say it has the drama of Black Swan with the visuals of a Hollywood blockbuster. It's slow but for people who thought Black Swan was too slow there's a lot more going on to keep you interested.

Enjoyed American Hustle but didn't think it was great. Christian Bale really sinks into his roles. Such a great actor. Good performances all around. 3/5

Solid acting all around (although I didn't like FBI guy... name escaping me) and decent writing. But I had a hard time caring too much about any of it or any of them.

Louis CK crushed that small role.

I was pleasantly surprised when Deniro showed up. No idea he was in it. Why do actors choose to do an uncredited role like that? Just for that reason, to surprise people?

I thought Louis CK played Louis CK... which I like, but I didn't think of it as acting, let alone crushing.

I thought Cooper was great in Silver Linings but yeah, I was suprised he got nominated for AH. I thought Renner was much better in it and got a lot less credit for his role. Bale, Adams, and Lawrence were all awesome.

The reviews do look really good for the new CA so Id trust you on this one. Debating on going to see a flick in the theaters tomorrow night and itll probably be either this or Noah if I do. Leaning Noah because Id rather give my money towards an Aronofsky project like that than a comic book movie.

I dont think youre going out on much of a limb there. I havent seen Thor 2. I liked the first one better than the first Capt. USA but theyre both lower on the totem pole.

If you actually enjoy good movies, I dont see how anyone couldve hated Requiem or The Wrestler.

Finally caught up with some of the oscar nominated films.

Gravity - A new high in special effects, most of them mindblowing, but an average story. Good but not great.

12 Years A Slave - Excellent performances, intriguing story, but also good, not great. There was a lack of nearly any humanity at all and the southerners seemed to exist for the sole purpose of inflicting cruelty on the slaves. I compare it to Schindler's List, which was also very cruel but had more well rounded characters.

Captain Phillips - I liked this the best of the three. You rooted for Phillips but had some understanding of what the pirates were dealing with. Exciting and believable (even if some of it was inaccurate).

I liked all of his movies except The Fountain. He gets a mulligan on that one for me, although many seem to love that one too.

Enjoyed it enough to look up who wrote/directed it and see it's the same guy (Nichols) that did Shotgun Stories, a film starring Michael Shannon, an actor I enjoy. Now i really want to see Take Shelter.

I liked Dallas Buyers Club. Can't argue with MM's Oscar win but don't think Leto's role was big enough for the win. Haven't seen 12 years yet but I guess none of the others were really Oscar worthy either. Not a great movie overall though. 2.5/5

He was the best choice of the options. Fassbender did a great job in 12YAS and Abdi in Captain Phillips, but Leto played a key role in the movie even if it was a small part. MM's character had to transform from someone who hated gays to someone who was on their side so Leto's character had to help make that transformation believable.

I found this movie to be pretty slow and a bit boring. I was tempted on many occaisions to fast forward it to the end. I'm a bit surprised by the love it gets on this board.

No idea what to tell you. 7.5 on imdb, 85 on metacritic, 92% on RT (audience at 81%). Seems like this one was universally well received.

Not a specific spoiler, but I will still put it in the box in case you don't want to click on it. Knowing it might effect you viewing of it.

There is something that Joe Q moviegoer doesn't like, that is a big reason why I like this movie:

Ambiguous endings. I like that this movie had me thinking about it days after I watched it.

I think Shannon and Chastain are two of the best actors out there today, and neither performance disappointed. It is a drama and a character study - sure it might be a tad slow by normal movie standards, but it is well worth the ride, IMO.

I think the board in general, and this thread specifically tends to lean more to the snobby critic side of the movie going spectrum. I posted the scores it has above, and not surprised at all that people love it in here.

Not the same genre or anything, but it would be something on the lines of Moon. Limited # of actors, small movie, great performances, made you think a little, etc.. Don't imagine it would do well at the theaters though.
