Totally dumb. Totally bat-**** crazy.

I do give a movie an extra thumb up for believing in its own material. What can I say? The movie is silly, but it worked.
i had real hope for luc besson but he's one step away from making this.
It's true. The Professional is one of my all-time favorite movies, but his career has been disappointing.
His career has been disappointing since The Fifth Element but Leon, The Fifth Element and La Femme Nikita alone are enough of a career for a director. After looking him up on IMDB I was surprised he wrote Taken, which is one of the few action movies I like. He also wrote a movie called District B13 (2004) that I'll check out.

You guys had high hopes for the The Equalizer?

TV ads make it look like a phoned-in, rehash deal by all involved. Seems like everyboyd has made Denzel and that character a completely wooden cliche.... at least that's what I get from the ads.
I was a big fan of the TV show and this had Denzel in it. How do you #### that up?

District B13 is decent. Taken 1 also had some decent things going for it. Taken 2, which Besson co-wrote, was absolutely drekful.

I'm in the minority, but even though I appreciated some things in The Professional- pacing, mostly- it bugged me... a distinctly Franco-Italian schmaltzy pairing of the vagabond dirty kid with rough and tumble adult with lots of obvious framing, action, writing, and music. can't explain why that all should be bother me, but it does.

no, i think you're mostly right. I think it's a fun movie but you can't think too much about it. I think there may be a case to be made that his best movie is "The Big Blue" even if it does promote Rosanna Arquette as a love interest.

District B13 is one of the better martial arts films I've seen in the last few years.

One of those popular movies I haven't had a chance to see yet. Why?

It's pretty universally loved... but I dislike it for similar reasons.

Ah I see. I remember seeing Cinema Paradiso and wondering what all the fuss was about.

I loved it. A mature movie with an intelligent script. A lesser work would have likely settled with heavily focusing on having the secondary characters judging Joaquin Phoenix's digital girlfriend. But this society - our society - is already walking down the path of complete isolation and love of objects over human contact. Highly recommended.
:goodposting: Very thought provoking.

Nailed it. The paradigm for what I'm talking about.

except....

when that movie came out, I was in love LOVE in college with this girl who I thought looked like the love interest from the movie. She commented that she thought I looked the lead (as a teen). We had 3 incredible collegey weeks together before she graduated and I moved back to CA... we saw the the movie together before the end of it- and it will always remind me of extreme sense of aboslute emotional and intellectual affirmation I had with her- my whole soul resounded YES when I was around her. So... yeah- the movie hits all of my dislike/annoy buttons... but... dammit.

Leon: The Professional was absolutely terrible. No idea why it gets the love it gets. The next movie that Besson directs that isn't horrible will be his first.

Only good movie he's ever been apart of is Taken.

Gary Oldman hamming it up as Stansfield is a delight.

Listen, it's a slick film to look at but utterly ridiculous otherwise. It's fun to see Portman in her debut and recognize her potential instantly. Oldman is a blast. Besson knows how to stage a scene though and film it correctly. Otherwise, it's a pretty dumb movie. Everything he's done since has gotten progressively worse (mostly). He's the French equivalent to Robert Rodriguez.

Ouch.

Followed my string of great movies with a couple newer ones that I didn't like.

Dom Hemingway was alright for a couple minutes, and then Jude Law's character got real old real quick. didn't seem to go anywhere, just crass to be crass.

Filth was better, but still not a movie that I could get into (might have been the mood I was in from the last one too)

Texas Chainsaw:

Yeah, you read that correctly. I didn't hate the first remake, but that had a lot to do with R. Lee Ermey. This one was a festering turd of a movie.

That said, Alexandra Daddario is gorgeous enough to make it worth watching. So much better than watching Biel run around in the one from 10 years ago.

It is that time of year to watch some horror movies. Any worth a crap that people can suggest in here that they have seen recently? Might start the annual post soon too.

ooooooh... see Exorchristmas... Exorscissors.... Exorcismus? the one I posted about upthread a week or so ago.

because I don't want to be the only one who has.

Watched "The Master" last night.

Other than what I thought were really great performances by Hoffman and Phoenix - I have no idea what that story was about.

Horrible movie...that I've watched TWICE from start to finish because of the lovely Alexandria. She is just absolutely mesmerizing.

FX's The Strain is better than most horror movies. Watch that first.
I got through about 1 1/2 episodes, and didn't like it at all.

feels like we are heading towards a break up. ;)

Some of the acting is really bad. But I bet had you stuck with it you'd be pretty engrossed by now.

Just watched Coherence based upon some reviews posted here, http://www.amazon.com/Coherence-Emily-Foxler/dp/B00MFE29P8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1412251140&sr=8-1&keywords=coherence. Excellent flick. Had a bit of the same feel as Man from Earth. Really enjoy these low budget movies that don't need a lot of flash to move the story along. Long story short: what would happen if the multiverse theory was more than just a theory and some cosmic event was happening that allowed us to move between various alternate realities.

Great movie. 4/5

Private Parts..... still funny and I'm not even a Stern fan.
This is a fantastic movie. And it should have been a failure. But Stern and company put together a good script and assembled an excellent cast rather than just relying on Stern's star power.
