This was good, and just saw the next one is with Richard Linklater.

Linklater is a decent, smart chap. That'll be good.

If you ever have a chance, listen to Anderson's commentary on the Boogie Nights DVD. Excellent.
i am a nerd, so i devour commentaries/extras on my favorite movies. Loved them talking about the hell that was the "Sister Christian" scene.

Cool.

Anderson's interview by Terry Gross is absolutely worth hearing, as well.

When my GF leaves town I try to use that as an opportunity to watch the films I have a mild interest in that I know she would not suffer through.

Escape Plan - Meh, pretty much what I expected. It was nice to hear Arnie finally decide to actually speak German on camera but that was the only element that was even mildly interesting from otherwise standard fare.

Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit. It amazes me that a film that was this fast paced and packed with as much tension and action as you could possibly stuff into every single frame of a film was SO GODAWFUL BORING!

looks like we're getting a sitter this weekend...

any recs for an in-the-theaters movie? was thinking either: Interstellar (probably too long) or Sniper. Anything else I should absolutely see?

I would bet that Interstellar is one of those movies people will kick themselves for not seeing on the big screen.

i kind of liked "Top Five". It's not perfect but I enjoyed it.

I don't go to the movies often but saw the Imitation Game last weekend and it was really, really good.
I'm jonesing to see it, but the wife has no interest.

wife has a messed up back ritgh now- makes the longer movies impossible. but that's the one I've been wanting to see, and yeah- in the theaters.

dotty... I like you. like? I LIKE you.

but this is rental at best for me.

thanks guys... still looking.

oh!

took 3yo floppinha to her first movie, along with 7yo big brother. Penguins of Madagascar. I was much more interested in watching her than the movie... but I'm happy to report both were cute.

Not sure what is playing around you, this time of year I usually seek out some (I'm assuming) movies that would be up for awards. Inherent Vice is long too. American Sniper would probably be a good bet. How about:

Whiplash

Nightcrawler

Birdman

??

thanks KP- I'm in NYC, so pretty much everything is playing around me.

fwiw- we're postponing due to her back and both of our collective sick

Love is Strange:

Lithgow and Molina play a gay couple that is finally able to get married after living most of their lives together, but not without consequences. There are some great, funny, sweet moments in this movie between these two. The problem is, they are not together enough for me to really love the movie. Part of the problem is the main struggle the couple is going to made no sense to me, and I thought it was easily avoidable, but maybe it's a NY thing? 6/10

Why in the world would you not move someplace cheaper so you could live together?? They had some money with his pension, the other guy could have taught music damn near anywhere I would guess. Made 0 sense to me - if my wife and I had to sell our house, I would guess we would just find the cheapest apartment we could even if it meant moving out of the area for the time being.
Honeymoon:

This one started off a bit slow, and took a little too long to get to some interesting stuff, but I still thought this was a pretty good horror movie. Stars some guy and my favorite redhead wildling from Game of Thrones as the newly married couple. You could do a lot worse for the genre. 5.5/10

Inherent Vice B- Good in parts, but too long and convoluted.

It was good in spots, but too long and convoluted.

Other a couple of small scenes, Joaquin Phoenix was in every scene. He did very good in the movie, but he probably did not have to be in every scene.

Josh Brolin played the same character as in MIBIII, except a lot tougher. But he was good.

So was Owen Wilson, Hong Chau and Jordan Hearn. And Katherine Waterson, who played Shasta, has a scene where it is full on frontal and rear nudity   and it gets kinky

But I guess it is telling that the biggest laugh was during the opening scene of the movie but was not in the movie. An elder woman sitting in front of me and my daughter pointed out loudly that she knew that beach and those apartments. She also proceeded to tell the entire theater that she lost her virginity on that beach. :lmao: :lmao:

Boyhood:

This one ended up more of the spectrum of just glad I watched it because it was a groundbreaking way to make a movie, and less on the spectrum of actually loving the movie. Was great to see a character grow up in front of our eyes onscreen, and it was uncanny how much he looked like a young Ethan Hawke. I was just surprised that I felt no emotional attachment to any of the characters, and downright disliked many of them. Overall just surprised how little I connected with this movie last night, thought it would be a slam dunk top 10 of the year for me. 6.5/10

Big Hero 6:

Took my 8yr old to this one today, and I loved it. I think this was the most fun that he had in the theater this year too, which definitely added to my enjoyment. He was laughing, at the edge of his seat, and I am pretty sure through my tears I saw him fighting not to cry too. Very good year for family movies. 7.5/10
you have big hero rated too low :)
He has both of those movies rated too low.

Different ratings maybe? Big Hero 6 might be slightly low, but I shift a tad after i think more about my end of year rankings. For me, an 8/10 is one of the best movies of the year- in my top 10-15 or so. It might make that, but only seeing it once, i have Lego Movie higher now so i dont know if Big Hero gets the extra .5.

Similar with Boyhood. 7/10 for me is a good movie that misses out on my best of list, but i would watch a few times again. It was a good movie, but maybe i would watch it again, but i am in no hurry to do so.

I get the feeling i am in the minority with Boyhood, and that is fine.
During the filmspotting year-end review someone said Boyhood was kind of like the scene from Interstellar where MM comes back to the ship and watches the decades of footage waiting for him from his family. That hit the nail on the head for me. That's how I felt to a lesser degree watching Boyhood. Feeling 12 years pass by in 2.5 hours. Yes, I did start thinking about my own life and yes that could be construed as taking me out of the film but IMO it just added to it. Watching Boyhood I was thinking of my own life, the actors/process and the narrative.

The narrative is simple but that just allowed things to breath and let me ponder the time that has gone by.

The PT interview with Maron was forgettable but the Linklater interview was wide open and very satisfying. Linklater a chatterbox. Was good.

After Earth. I hate watching a movie and realizing I'm not in on the joke. And forget his son, Will Smith was awful in this. 1.5 stars because hey, I'm not heartless.

Iron Man 3. Love the interactions with Tony and the kid. Gwenyth looking sexy as ever. And like 60 different suits. Fun time.

For me, Tree of Life hit home for me in a much more effective way of looking back at the past and memories. I realize that they weren't doing exactly the same thing, but I think that Tree of Life's choppy, convoluted way looking at the past in a way that would mimic memories effected me a lot more.

It definitely was cool watching the actors grow up in front of our eyes during Boyhood. I did like listening to Linklater's interview and him talking about how the spine of the movie is very autobiographical.

I'm not sure what to make of this movie. Other than I loved it. It's sort of a throwback to 80s Horror/Thriller movies (think, Tthe Hitcher), but with a stylized vibe along the lines of Drive. It's a bit of a slow burn, and the story isn't anything groundbreaking, but it kept me on the edge of my seat nonetheless. It's a touch schlocky in a few parts, but I think that's by design. And the soundtrack/score makes the movie (reminds me a bit of Bronson's score). Have a feeling that this is a love it or hate it film.

Read the description and if it sounds interesting, watch it without watching the trailer, which shows way too much of the movie. It's available for rental on iTunes and probably Amazon.

Free weekend of everything. Will be recording a lot. Last night's dvr selection..... P.C.U.

Haven't watched yet. Still. One of the funniest movies ever. Gutter is a tool!

Good movie, really had that 80's feel.

Yep. I scanned the whole weekend and have like 10 movies recording. Got some dvr room but a bunch of shows are coming back soon.

Just in case anyone needed confirmation:

Into the Storm, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Left Behind were all horrible pieces of ####.

i tried this before, but when the preview weekends ended, the movies i recorded on those channels didnt play. Maybe a Dish Network thing?

Jack Ryan - Not sure I get the hate. Nothing memorable but it was a fun enough ride.

Guardians of the Galaxy - Went in with huge expectations and while it didn't quite live up to them I still really really liked it. I was basically expecting Firefly with a bigger budget and while that's basically what it was, however I felt that both the comedy and the drama didn't hit quite as consistently as it did in Firefly. Still loved it though, and am really looking forward to the sequel.

Third Person - Surprised this one didn't get more pub. I thought it was really good. One of those movies that aren't straight forward and make you think, but unlike most of them with a few minutes of deep thought at the end you could figure it all out as opposed to having to go read WTF just happened on the internet. I liked it better than Crash.

Caught Elysium last night. I have almost nothing to say about it positive or negative. It was ok. Not bad. Not great. Nothing worthy of a rewatch, nothing worthy of warning to not watch. Just a regular old sci fi-ish movie. I guess the effects of the space station from space were cool. Very meh.

We watched the first season of Marco Polo. I'm sure it gets a lot of flak around here, but I totally enjoyed it for the macro qualities. (ie: boobs).

i watched the first 10 minutes of it. i couldn't stomach it. there's better things to indulge in with my time.

the lead was terrible. but it's a big story and the surrounding cast was actuallly quite good. I enjoyed the "epic" quality of it.

but I fully realize it's chock full o' terrible bits.

The Man Who Fell to Earth - Actually an impressive performance by David Bowie but very dated and poorly edited. Trippy and freaky but not in a good way, imo.

Recorded 14 movies this weekend. All work fine. I have Dish. I do this every time there is a free weekend.

I felt the same. I think we have similar movie tastes. PCU was one of my favorites back in the day.
