Watched War of the Worlds last night... so bad. 

Did anyone actually like this movie?  I thought it was horrible

Also watched Must Love Dogs and liked it... but I like most romantic comedies and like John Cusack.

I liked War of the Worlds. I thought it was different, in that it didn't really have any sub-plots. It is what it is - a quest for survival. It is a simple action movie, nothing more, nothing less.

That's a very good way of putting it--but precisely why I didn't like it.I'm not a huge fan of action movies to begin with, but for me a good action movie is far more involved than that. It reminded me a lot of Signs, which I also hated.

An example of the opposite of War of the Worlds would be Independence Day...too many sub plots which seemed cookie cutterish...I get tired of all of that crap, which I thought War of the Worlds was refreshing.

Now, The Village I didn't like...I had the plot twist figured out half way into the movie, ruined the whole thing for me. Unbreakable...that is a great movie.

Layer Cake: Excellent movie. Daniel Craig is going to make a helluva Bond. The comparisons between this and Snatch, Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrells is inevitable... so I'll say this. I really like those two Guy Ritchie movies, but Layer Cake seems to be a more mature movie in the British crime genre. Snatch and LSATSB were all about quick cuts, flashy music, pop culture references and slick Tarantino-esqe criminals. Layer Cake seems a bit more grounded. The characters aren't as eccentric, the dialogue isn't as flashy and the plot does not rely on as many "convienent" twists and turns. Its a good rental....

Ending sucked, but I was on the edge of my seat the whole movie. The guy knows how to build suspense.

I saw "4 Brothers" recently. It's not that bad if you don't expect much and you just want to be entertained. Just an entertaining revenge flick with some good lines.Haven't seen Brothers Grimm yet, still waiting on my copies of Grizzly Man and 2046.

I watched March of the Penguins last night and was a bit underwhelmed. I found parts of it boring and the penguins stopped being cute about halfway through. Saw The Jacket tonight. Decent flick, I'm sure I'll get flamed for this but it was reminiscent of Butterfly Effect, which I thought was better.I was pleasantly surprised by Vanilla Sky, the ending could have been done better though.Recently saw The Machinest as well, which was good.

The third act does lose momentum. Partly due to the poor choice in soundtrack accompaniment (Good Vibrations?).I also like Signs and am not bothered by the aliens as they're really a MacGuffin anyway.

Re-watched a Richard Linklater fim called "Tape". The first time I saw it as on IFC.Peculiar movie with Ethan Hawke and the guy who committed suicide in "Dead Poet's Society. It takes place entirely in a dingy motel room and is mostly about Hawke's obsession with the idea tha Suicide Guy might have raped his ex-girlfriend (played by Uma Thurman) ten years ago in high school after Uma had dumped Hawke.I gained a lot of respect for Hawke's acting ability in this flick. He really embodied this character's desperation, and how his whole adult life had been altered by this one incident. Not a happy movie at all. Very sad, but very good.

Re-watched a Richard Linklater fim called "Tape". The first time I saw it as on IFC.

Just watched Broken Flowers with Bill Murray.

Really interesting film you can watch with a significant other. Not corny or Hollywood or out of bounds. I've seen more profound and maybe better movies over the past year or two but it was definetely worth the rental cost and more. Murray is really a solid actor in more serious roles and he is very good in this film. Good stuff.

I saw this and it was horrible. Like someone took TCSM and blended it with a Circus and add Alice in wonderland for spice. I know other people who loved it though, so apparently just not my taste.

watched 40 Year Old Virgin last night. Thought it was very funny, but dragged on too long. Still well worth the rental cost.

Saw most of this last weekend but only got to the point where they were on the 20th date and she freaked b/c he wouldn't sleep with her. Wife and I hit the sack b/c we thought it dragged on too long as well. What happens after that? I assume he scores, but verification would be appreciated.

i'd hate to spoil it.... it's hollywood. what do you think happened?

No. the ending is very predictable and drags on way way way too long. they get married, have sex and then launch into an idiotic dance number with the entire cast doing their version of "Aquarious". In fact, I kind of wish I missed that part myself. The first 2/3 of the movie are the only redeeming parts, so you're good.

I thought that 40YOV was one of those typical flicks that gets built up way too much before you see it and then disappoints. The few parts I did find amusing were in the trailers - just like most movies that are weak.

Three this weekend:Layer Cake - Pretty good movie overall. Overall, it was a pretty good action movie with some good twists. Not the best ever, but pretty good.The Machinist - Worth it just to see Christian Bale. He was ridiculously skinny. It's a decent psychological thriller-type movie. Worth a rent.The Island - Pretty predictable and outlandish sci-fi action movie. Not all that great, but Scarlett Johansson is really, really good looking.

Also watched "The Skeleton Key" which was also a decent movie worthy of a rental but again not a horror film. Several plot holes but nice acting and good setting saved the film.

Just saw this over the weekend. I would definitely recommend. The ending also had a nice twist.
