Recently viewed movie thread - Rental Edition (9 Viewers)

Watched A Sound of Thunder last night, given the source material (Ray Bradbury) I was hopeful this would be good.

It was the worst movie I've seen in a long time. Terrible performances, terrible special effects, half-baked story, jumbled psuedo-science. Mystery Science Theater 3000 should come back just to parody this movie.

Oh my god was the CGI horrible. Bad, bad movie.
 
Love Me If You Dare..... :thumbup: IT is a French movie about these two crazy children who play a Dare game throughout their life. It's interesting and pretty well done...... although I wasn't a big fan of the end.

Monsters Ball....... Meh.... I thought the acting was alright but not Oscar worthy.

Gimme Shelter :thumbup: :thumbup: An excellent documentary on the 1969 free Rolling Stones concert at Altimont Speedway.

Somebody on FBG's told me not to bother watching this, and I almost sent it back. I am glad I didn't. Considering the last few movies I have rented, King Kong & Chronicles of Narnia, it was refreshing to see something different.

War of Worlds + Being John Malcovich + Tremmors + Fargo + Butterfly Effect= Dream Catcher :yes:

 
Formula 51 -- Pretty generic action movie with Sam Jackson. It tries to be more like a Guy Ritchie film, but it's not as good as Snatch or something. Not terrible, though.

Waiting -- Pretty funny movie with Ryan Reynolds about working at a restaurant. Not awesome, but definitely worth a rental for some stupid fun.

Rebel Without a Cause -- I'd never seen this movie. It was definitely dated, but also very well worth seeing. It really was before it's time in the issues with which it dealt. :thumbup:

Not bad. Some clever ideas and good action scenes, and Angelina Jolie is definately NOT hard to look at either. I give it about a 7.

 
Just watched a few movies that have been out a while-

The Island- I liked it. Some people said it wasn't good but I liked it.

Walk the line- one of the best movies I have seen this year

Chronicles of Narnia- Awesome movie, I was very impressed. Seemed to cut a lot of the story to fit into an all ready long movie but it was great anyway.

 
Rented "Undertaking Betty" with Alfred Molina as a funeral director faking the death of his married lover so that they can run away together. Some good uncomfortable funeral home humor, and Christopher Walken chews some scenery as a competing funeral home director who wants to put the fun back in fun-eral.

On the whole, I'd say wait for it to hit cable.

 
Walk the Line. I liked it, even though I went in thinking I was going to hate it. Didn't know a whole lot about Cash's story. The leads were both good and Reese Witherspoon is cute as ####.
 
A History of Violence - I was pretty into it and I'm just thrilled with the career choices of Maria Bello. I mean, back in the hot ER days, I just assumed we wouldn't get her naked, but now it seems like everything she's in, she gets buck nekkid. I'm also starting to get concerned about my man love for Ed Harris. That boy good.

Elizabethtown - I agree with many of the critics who ripped it saying it's basically a "not as good" Garden State, but despite not really getting Orlando Bloom, I can't say I felt that I wasted my time. It was an okay way to spend a couple of hours. I can't say I'd recommend it, but if it's your only option, it shouldn't be the worst experience.

Yeah, that's what I'm talking about. Either she's down on their casting list and the only one who will do it or she's putting it out there that if you got a movie with some racy sex scenes, I'm your girl. With the Violence movie, I can't think of any mainstream movie I've ever seen with the "numeric" sexual position performed.

There sure is a lot of "extra" skin happening in a few of those Cooler scenes.
 
Wolf Creek

I watched this movie last night and it was ok, a bit slow at the start but when it got rolling it was good. Overall I give it a B-. No Nudity and not really that violent for a horror movie. I expected something more along the lines of Hostel or perhaps Blair Witch but it was not that good; definitely overrated.

 
Shawshank Redemption.

Yes, I'm the last guy on the planet to see this movie, and I'm not saying anything that everyone in here doesn't already know, but I finally did watch it end to end, unedited. Extremely quality flick. Wish i hadn't waited so long to watch it. :thumbup:

The Island - Scarlett alone makes it worth the rental. I dunno. I liked it. Mindless fun futuristic action movie. It kept me interested throughout. Great effects. Great idea. Maybe they could have done more with it, but I liked it.

King Kong - Screw you all, I liked this movie. My only complaint is the length, but we watched it in 2 parts. Sure it was goofy with the love story but any movie that has the effects like this one easily overcomes story limtations. C'mon...that bug scene in the valley! The T-Rex fight! And the final scene with the amazing birds-eye view of the city was unbelievable. Great movie.

Waiting - Gave up after about a half hour. Not even a chuckle in that time.

 
40 Year Old Virgin - Eleventy-four thousand times better than Wedding Crashers. I watched the wrong one first.
 
saw "Enron - The Smartest Man in the Room" (might be "guy")

appalling. disgusting. they almost crippled the 6th largest economy in the world. astonishing.

makes me fear the possibilities of capitalism even more.

 
I made a bad mistake and watched what I was told was a classic.

"Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978)"

Bad Bad movie. Terrible. There is not one single second that is decent.

Beware of this one.

 
HOSTEL....not as gory as advertised but man the girls were HOT,almost thought it was goin to be a porn movie(wishful thinking)cool story. I wonder if that stuff really happens(paying to torture people).

I know how you feel , i said the same thing about the passion of christ , i i have no interest in watching a defensless man getting beat up for 2 hours.I will say that Hostel is not all that bad,i thought saw2 was worse.

 
Short little story dealing with watching "Waiting" with my entire family. :o

A good friend of mine recommended "Waiting" - he said it was hilarious. "It's like Office Space, but in a restaurant" - he said. So I ordered it through Netflix, but didn't get a chance to watch it. I thought maybe we could bring it up to my parents house in NY that we were visiting over Easter.

Sounds good right? A little rest time while watching a movie. Some laughs. It'll be fun. :unsure:

We all sit down to watch this movie that I hyped during dinner. I'm thinking, if its anything like Office Space, it'll be good. :thumbup:

My parents appreciate comedy and all, but there's some things that just aren't funny to them. You can probably count on one hand the amount of times my mother and father have been drunk - combined! They just don't let 'er rip that often. Now you have a mental picture of what they must've thought about this movie - if you've already seen it. Let me explain to you my embarrassment.

So the first half hour of the movie is F this, F that, c*** su**** this, full frontal male nudity, blah, blah. My parents can tollerate the swearing - afterall we've seen Platoon together and they enjoyed it. BUT the juvenile scenes and behavior, it's just not them. After 5 minutes I knew this wasn't gonna be like Office Space, and I could tell by seeing the reaction on my mother's face that her thoughts were identical to mine, but multiply times 10. :shock:

This is just not a movie to watch with your parents. At least not my parents. So five minutes in and I'm already thinking ABORT, ABORT!! How can I stop this embarrasing moment from happening - afterall I was the one who hyped this flick to everyone at dinner! My sister and her fiance' recognized the :tfp: that was about to occur and decided to call it an early night. So now it was my wife and I and my parents as the only ones left.

I could feel the tension in the air as the movie went on. I waited for the first comment from my mother's mouth - it happened to be about 15 minuntes into the movie. She said something like - "I don't think I'm gonna like this". I decided to bite the bullet and get out while I still could. With that I said, "well we don't have to watch it - I didn't think it was gonna be like this".

And that was it - I stopped the movie, ejected the DVD before it could get any worse for me.

Let this be a lesson to you - DO NOT watch this movie with your parents. :bag:

 
Run Lola Run

I really enjoyed it, but I'm not sure why.  The soundtrack is pretty cool and for some reason, Franka Potente is mesmerizing when she runs.  I mean seriously, I could watch her run all day long.  She's not all that attractive, but :shrug:

And while watching foreign films it never ceases to amaze me how different Americans are from everyone else.

Must be quite good. It's been two weeks now since I've seen it and I still think about it quite often. Also, the song "Believe" sung by Franke Potente is kinda creepy/cool too.

If you haven't seen it, you should.

Seemed like it was going to be really good 30 minutes in, but it took a turn for the worst. They tried to make one movie out of 2 stories, and it just dragged on and on. It seemed like the entire 2nd half of the movie they were being shot at, everybody barely survived death by the skin of their teeth about 10 times.

Pretty good cast, but it seemed like the studio dropped so much money on big names, that they couldn't just make a regular film. I never thought I would say this, but it seemed like the movie was oversaturated with million dollar scenes.

Pretty cool boat chase scene, and sounded good on the Bose :thumbup:

DD Lewis was excellent as always.

DiCaprio was good but couldn't get a decent accent going (seemed to change from scene to scene).

The sets were cool and overall it was very interesting from a historical perspective.

But as always with a Scorcese movie, you really couldn't care less about anyone in it.

In a movie based on a Clive Cussler novel? Shocking. ;) BTW, I watched Crash the other night. "How Green Was My Valley" called. It wants its worst-film-to-win-best-picture status back.

I thought it was a very good film with a horrible performance by Cameron Diaz. That may be the worst-ever miscasting in a Scorsese film.

I just watched "Waiting" last night based on what people here had said. You did a great job describing it. I think it much more resembled Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle than Office Space. Extremely juvenile (NTTAWWT), but yes, you would have to have very "cool" :unsure: parents to enjoy it with them. I'm not sure I laughed out loud at any time during the movie, but several scenes were somewhat amusing. If you were into H & K, Ron Bergundy, Road Trip types of movies, you'll probably think this is funny too.

i laughed at some parts hysterically but a lot of it just didn't amuse me.. maybe the Uncensored version isn't as funny as the one released in theaters? i dunno.

it wasn't the laugh riot that i expected.

 
King Kong & Chronicles of Narnia - Two very similar movies that demonstrated how to do things right and how to do them wrong. Both were massive CGI projects and that aspect of both films was marvelous. CGI really is getting rediculously good.

Because both movies were a complete release from reality they both had to deal with that fine line where entertainment meets suspension of reality. If you cross that line and create a story that is just too far fetched for the audience to believe then the picture falls flat on it's face, ie. King Kong. There were just too many completely over the top scenes for me to feel entertained by Kong. Peter Jackson sold out to the Hollywood sleaze who just never are willing to believe that there is such a thing as too much action.

Narnia on the other hand danced the line perfectly. Lots of fun characters that were easy to like (or dislike), and lots of action but nothing that went over the top. My favorite part though was simply that there was no stupid, sappy Disney moral to be learned. It was just an adventure for the kids and they each played their parts.

Did we watch the same version? I saw the one with that was chock full of Christian allegories.Anyway, was I the only one (besides Shuke, of course) that thought the White Witch had something going on, particularly in that first scene she's in?

funny, i just saw this movie around a week ago. great film. really liked robert shaw in that movie also.i just recently saw My Dinner with Andre. Definitely not for everyone, but the name of the title basically says it all. Two guys sitting down for dinner have a conversation. That's it. Made me feel stupid at times, but it definitely makes you think about life. Very very interesting movie.
