Exceptionally well done movie. Some of the most clever, funny dialogue I've ever heard in a film. It wasn't a knee slapping comedy, but Hartnett ("Slevin") was such a smart ### and had some great one liners. Freeman and Kingsley worked very well as mob bosses. First half of the movie was all about the setup. The second half brought everything together, and though I think some people might criticize it for being too coincidental, I loved the way things shook out in the end.

Great thriller. Good amount of shots to the head, and a couple early, quick, sex scenes. Outstanding movie, I very highly recommend this one.

Some films I've seen over the past couple months that I really liked: (for some reference I like Wes Anderson, Christopher Guest, Charlie Kaufman, Coen Brothers films)

Amelie - if you want to impress your wife/gf, rent this one. great movie.

Chungking Express - 2 Hong Kong love stories, amazing cinematography, very cool.

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang - like everyone else, was pleasantly surprised by Downey & Kilmer, they were great. As far as a modern noir film, I enjoyed this so much more than Brick.

Oldboy, Audition, Ichi the Killer - probably self explanatory (What are the next logical rentals after these? Suicide Club? Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance?)

Me and You and Everyone We Know - not sure how to describe it - quirky indie flick. some will hate it but I enjoyed it. The little boy was hilarious.

Harold and Maude - classic. don't know how I missed it for so long. immediately became one of my favorites. funny to learn that Harold played the "bond company stooge" in Life Aquatic.

North by Northwest - had seen this, but rented it recently (why do cable stations play Hitchcock in fullscreen?) Great film.

Bus 174 - fascinating Brazilian documentary about a bus hijacking that you will probably like if you liked City of God.

That's all I can think of for now.

[2 films I thought were decent, but talked up too much were Brick and Green St. Hooligans]

If you liked Chunking Express take a look at "In the mood for love". Excelent movie

saw Wedding Crashers this week. had some slow periods but all in all i liked it. Vince Vaughn killed me. he's one of my favorite comic actors right now.

 
Last night, for the first time I saw Full Metal Jacket. I thought that it was overrated and very average......particularly post Paris Island. Matthew Modine was nothing spectacular and I did not feel any connection with any of his unit in Vietnam. After being underwhelmed by this, A Clockwork Orange and 2001: A Space Odyssey I am beginning to think that either Stanley Kubrick is an overrated storyteller or his stuff has a very distinct niche. Does anyone else feel this way?

He must not be for everyone. I loved FMJ and Clockwork Orange, 2001 was ok. But I can see where one would love his work or hate it.
 
One instance that I thought showed Kubrick's limitations was during the sniper scene. I thought that it would have been more tense and authentic if we did not see the snipers POV at all.... but instead were left ( along with the platoon) to wonder where she was. When Cowboy was shot through the wall all the suspense was ruined because we saw the shot through the snipers eyes.

i didn't especially like FMJ. In fact, I'll go one further and say that I'm not a fanboy for a lot of his work. They're visually full and/or thrilling but they tend to leave me cold. However, what I do like of his work - Barry Lyndon, 2001, A Clockwork Orange and Dr Strangelove - I absolutely adore.
 
Full Metal Jacket was one of the most schizophrenic movies I've ever seen. The first half in boot camp was riveting; the second in-country half was pretty much a letdown.

Any music fans especially any motown music fans would love this documentary. About the funk brothers (band) that played on every motown hit but received little acclaim since it all went to the singers.

there are live performance mixed in where the funk bros play the old hits with modern artists. ben harper doing grapevine was the bomb.

Just watched Hard Candy

Pretty good overall. Kinda dragged on after awhile, but still a pretty good idependant movie. The girl did a helluva job in that movie.

One thing to realize about Jacket is that the boot camp sequence has been copied hundreds of times, so that does lessen its impact. Personally, I think "Apocalypse Now" is the best war film ever made. But the boot camp sequence of Jacket is outstanding. While I agree that the war scenes in Jacket are not great, they do get better with multiple viewings.Hard to call Kubrick overrated since almost everything in the modern era is overrated. People hated "Eyes Wide Shut", but I am not sure that there's any other filmmaker that could have made that movie the way that Kubrick did. I don't think Kubrick should be called a master storyteller. He's not a Spielberg. I think Kubrick is a big-time art house film director that happens to make films for major studios.Kubrick also directed "Dr. Strangelove" and "Lolita." Those are pretty outstanding films, if you haven't seen them.

Not so good, IMO. i am a huge fan of nabokov and it's a deeply flawed film. it retains so little of the wit and sadness that comes from the novel. it's the "emotional flatness" that is always in kubrick's work that somehow doesn't work for me.
 
The Sentinel with Michael Douglas, Keifer, and Eva Longoria

First of all it gets extra points right off the bat, with Eva in there for some eye candy, and she was looking very well, I must say. Movie had fairly good suspense, and a decent plot. Michael and Keifer are almost always solid, and didn't disappoint here either. I would recommend it to any action/thriller fan (or Eva fan!) :thumbup: :thumbup:

Inside Man

Great movie. I'm really digging Denzel Washington these days. Training Day and Man on Fire were OUTSTANDING, and Inside Man, although probably my least favorite of the three, is also a very very good movie. I think the plot has been hashed out elsewhere, so I'll skip the replay and just say I definately recommend this one.

The Hills Have Eyes

I was disappointed in this one. It seemed very slow to get going. And for at least the first half of the movie, the only suspense came from some eerie music, someone cautiously going to look around a corner or out a window, and then something ordinary like a bird or another character would jump out. That type of "scare scene" happened at least a dozen times in the first hour. Then when the killing really started happening (much too late in the movie), most of the deaths were some sharp object driven into some part of the bad guy's body. It just got old quickly. There are much better horror flicks out there.

Watched this tonight. The kinda movie I really like in that it doesn't seem to make sense early on. It seems like there are some inconsistancies. But when the story comes together the the payoff is great. If anyone watches it, don't give up on it.I do have an issue with the high praise for Ben Kingsley though. I have never been overly impressed with him and I can think of many other actors that could fill this role better. Not that he wasn't good, but the fake accent is too obvious.

Highly recommend the movie though.

I'm on board with ya on the Eva part, as well as it being a solid flick....until the end. The ending was HORRIBLE! It was as if they just kinda forgot they had to end it and, "Oh yeah, here's the ending".Pissed me off to no end. For that reason alone, I would NOT recommend this movie.

Hell, I got it w/ netflix to burn before watching it and when I got it and watched it, just sent it back. Had no desire to burn the damn thing :hot:

Good review :goodposting: I enjoyed watching it, nothing spectacular but it is worth watching. That girl is unbelievable. :shock: I agree, the white kids acting black is pretty funny. There were also some other pretty funny 1 liners... The dad "You were smoking crack with gangsters." During the dice game, one of the Mexicans yells "roll a 6" :lmao: Then when they are performing the gang initiation the one Mexican gives his buddy the signl to move in from behind...that was funny.

I think it was over hyped. A good movie, yes. But very predictable. After the story is told about the guy betting on the horse, and Hartnet is introduced, you should know it was the kid. Lucy Lu, :wall: I hate her. Her dialoge in her first scene was worthless. Even thought I do not like Hartnet i thought he did well in this movie.

Again, I think it was a good movie, but man, the hype was crazy.

Watched Tigerland this weekend.

It was ok, Colin Farrell was good, overall just didn't do anything more than other Vietnam era movies have already done.

 
The Last Kiss: I like Zach Braff, though not as much as my wife does, but I didn't like this movie at all. I can't quite put my finger on it, either, but it just didn't work for me.

Lucky Number Slevin - Saw the "twist" coming, but not a bad popcorn flick (though I hate popcorn). One think that I took out of it is that I would still love to nail Lucy Liu.

Also watched Dr. Zhivago this weekend. While I enjoyed it, it wasn't on the same level of other epics like Lawrence of Arabia or The Godfather. I didn't find Zhivago to be a very sympathetic character, and ended up feeling really bad for his family. It didn't seem like he had any real reason to be drawn to Lara, aside from the lure of the poontang. That said, it was a really interesting look at the Bolshevik revolution and its aftermath.

 
Rented Transamerica this weekend.

Not a bad flick if you are interested in trannies. Felicity Hoffman was outstanding.
