Rented The Ladykillers (Coen Brothers comedy). The Ladykillers is a silly comedy with Tom Hanks by the Coen Brothers. Not for everyone, but fans of "The Big Lebowski" and "O' Brother Where Art Thou?" may enjoy The Ladykillers. The juxtaposition of the anachronistic Hanks character with his hip hop cohort was really amusing.
Defintiely a Coen Bros film in the feel of it but I really didn't find it funny or clever.
In some ways, it was dumb. But I guess it just worked for me.
It's a decent movie but, as is often said, the original was better. It was a funny movie to begin with and this didn't bring anything new to the table.
alec guinness was great in this... also kind hearts & coronets, where he plays something like 6-7 different siblings... classic black comedy...

Rented The Chumscrubber. Black comedy, very good movie.

Happy little hillside suburban town. Everything seems perfect until the local drug dealer hangs himself, and the kids no longer have their "happy pills". Mayhem ensues.

Amazing cast - Glenn Close, Ralph Fiennes, Allison Janney, Lauren Holly, Rita Wilson, Glenn Close, Carrie Ann Moss, and more.
This was on TV a couple of nights ago and it looked interesting. It had a Donnie Darko feel to it in the few minutes that I watched.

It has been associated with the Donnie Darko genre of movies. It is very Tim Burtonesque. It is one of the best, original movies I have seen in a long time.

I just saw Kung Fu Hustle and that had to be one of the greatest recent kung fu movies I have ever seen. It was like a mix of the Matrix, Kill bill, Crouching Tiger, with some comedy mixed in. Its in subtitles, the action is great, and non stop.

I would put my reputation for movies on the line here...you need to go and see this movie...I just saw it on Starz.
Loved it! :D It was so good, I rented Shaolin Soccer, too, which was entertaining (though not as good as Kung Fu Hustle).

Mission Impossible III

I guess it's good, but I just can't get into the series. I was a big fan of the original show but the movies just don't hold my interest. I can't wait for them to end.

No different here.

I agree...great movie. Great fight scenes and tons of humor to go with it. I think if you search for Kung Fu Hustle on youtube, you can get the whole movie broken into about 10 parts, in case you need a quick fix.

I'm behind the times here, but I finally watched Saw last night. I was expecting mindless gore and guts from beginning to end, but I was surprised at just how little gore there really was in this. And what WAS there actually flowed with the movie (unlike, say, The Hills Have Eyes, which seemed to do all it could to overdo every possible confrontation to the point where many of the scenes actually became laughable). And the plot twists really kept me hooked here until the very end. I will definately have to check out parts 2 and 3 now.

Wasn't expecting much, but I thought this was actually a very well done movie.

Just watched a French thriller named "Calvaire." Translated, that means "the ordeal." An apt title. Very well made, but awful to watch at the same time. Though I'd say this is too excruciating to recommend, it does have one of the greatest trailer tag lines of all time:

Lost in the woods

near a quiet country village.

What's the worst that could happen?

Ask the pig.

I dunno maybe it's me but I had trouble watching Van Wilder in it's entirety I thought it was a very bad flick as far as comedies go. I will give it credit with the Colon Blow scene - that did make me laugh :lmao: but for the other 90 minutes I was  and borderline

Gave it a second look myself, and whoa I never realized how bad Cary Elwes was in this movie. One of the worst acting jobs I've seen in years.Nice to see Ben Linus from "Lost" getting some work as an orderly

** Victim of high expectations **

I rented Thank you for smoking after reading wave after wave of glorious reviews, touting this as one of the funniest comedies in years. I was in the mood for a comedy so a snatched it off the shelf. Stopped off and got a couple of McRibs and headed home. I watched it from start to finish, and while clever in spots, it doesn't have enough of those killer "laugh out loud" moments that I look for in a great comedy. I have a feeling I would have enjoyed this movie a lot more if it had "snuck up on me", and was probably a victim of raised expectations that it can't meet.

It's ok, but don't expect the next great American comedy or you'll be disappointed.

Edit: it is clever and well written.

Just watched a great little documentary called "Tom Dowd and the Language of Music." It plays on IFC, and is also available on Netflix.

Rarely do we get a chance to see a feature-length documentary about a true unsung hero. Tom Dowd was an innovative music producer and recording engineer. Historical footage, photographs and classic music tracks underscore how Tom Dowd altered the course of contemporary music via his many technical achievements. Features appearances by Ray Charles, Eric Clapton, The Allman Brothers Band, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Les Paul and Aretha Franklin.

Completely agree with you here...forgot to mention just how poor some of the acting was, particularly Elwes. Was OK at the beginning but got worse and worse, and by the end it just :X . Can't say I cared for the little daughter in this one much either, though I'll cut a kid a little more slack. In spite of the acting, I still enjoyed it though.

 Also watched this last week, thought the same thing. Well done and clever but not a laugher.(yeah, just call me Stato-echo today)

Just watched two movies last night:

Dukes of Hazzard.

Well, you pretty much know what you're getting yourself into on this one. Jessica Simpson looks very nice. My wife at least twice mentioned how good she looked (and she very rarely comments on other women in front of me). Not many laughs, not much plot, didn't expect much, didn't get much.

Layer Cake

Frankly was a bit disappointed, as these are the type of movies I ordinarily enjoy. I found the plot a bit difficult to follow, and the dialogue lacking. It was pretty good, but I was expecting a lot more.

I have Capote at home and will probably watch that in the next day or two.

The reviews for this are intriguing. Every one I've seen says something like "too disturbing to recommend" or "it will turn your stomach" or "it made me feel violated for days". I feel like a kid in his grandma's house, and every time I visit, grandma makes it a point of saying "whatever you do, do NOT open that door!". I just HAVE to see what is behind the door now.

I totally agree that that scene was about the only redeeming one.I saw United 93 and it was pretty good. My only complaint was that they spent too much time in the room where they were watching the flights on radar.

It's not gory. It's more of a psychological drama than a horror film. But it certainly is meant to torture the viewer.

Match Point

If it weren't for Scarlett Johansen I probably would have fallen asleep. I had my reservations about this as I can't stand Woody Allen or his movies, but this got good reviews (albiet, so did all his other suck fests). Just boooooring.

Flight 93  Well done to the point that you almost felt you were watching a documentary (as someone mentioned already).

"my super ex-girlfriend" on the plane back to chicago this morning. predictable as all get out but i kind of enjoyed its simplicity. it might have also been the fact that i had been up since 5am too. uma is a stunner and always worth the price of admission.

The Prestige    Very well done. Not quite what I was expecting but entertaining, quality acting and a couple of decent twists.
i saw this the other day and really found myself enjoying it. it feels like an adaptation of a novel in terms of pacing and ambition. i was very happy with it.

Weird, in the past week I've seen both of these movies for the first time.Dukes of Hazzard was more funny than I thought. Willie Nelson cracked me up a few times as a cussing Uncle Jessy. Jessica is just lights-out obviously. I was pleasantly surprised  Layer Cake was ok to good. I couldn't play it too loud so I had a hard time understanding a lot of the dialogue. The ending was unexpected, which was nice. I give it a 6 out of 10.

Not even Jessica Simpson's spectacular ### is enough to get me to watch that pablum.

A DJ on Sirius raved about this too a month or so ago. I guess I should que it up. Couldn't find it on IFC.

He was a sweet guy and a brilliant technician. You can buy the DVD here. I'm sure Netflix will get this DVD in eventually.

Rented the horror movie Rest Stop last night and while I didn't expect much and I got even less. Terrible movie. The only good thing was the nude scene with the star Jaimie Alexander which was pretty graphic.

Rented Immortal.

Visually interesting, although the CGI was too obvious in many instances.

Story was an incoherent mess, acting was subpar.

Broken Flowers -- I really liked this movie a lot. Bill Murray gave another great performance.

United 93 -- Wow. Even though you know what happens, it was incredibly intense. I was drained after watching it. Very good movie.

Football Factory. If you like Green Street Hooligans you'll like this one.

Zoolander........ meh. It wasn't that horrible but it wasn't funny. I think Ben Stiller tries to hard sometimes.

In the second of my Kurosawa films, I had Seven Samurai at the top of my Queue, but Netflix sent Throne of Blood instead. Really enjoyed it. While there were a couple of times where I was tempted to fast-forward a little due to some dragging on of scenes, the movie as a whole was very good. Pretty brutal death scene. I'm enjoying Mifune too as an actor and will probably check out some of his other movies not directed by Kurosawa. And his wife in the film was real good too. Very evil, conniving interpretation of Lady Macbeth.

I can tell I'll really enjoy going through the Kurosawa collection if the first two are any indication.

Hopefully they'll send Seven Samurai next.

"sorcerer" - william friedkin's re-telling of "wages of fear". definitely a product of its time, with friedkin's fingerprints all over it. some incredible scenes that made me fear for the life of the actors. pretty entertaining.

sorceror was a great movie... i like premise of four hoods (int'l cast including roy scheider) running until there was nowhere else to run... a big part of the suspense building was the hypnotic, driving tangerine dream soundtrack... this was a remake of the french "noir" wages of fear, which also included some death-defying stunts in which you genuinely fear for actors lives...

seen some good movies lately...

few documentaries...

ghengis blues, just another typical movie about a blind SF blues singer/guitarist that goes to tuva (in norther mongolia & below russian steppes) to learn tuvan throat singing, entering a contest of masters of this bizarre form of singing (harmonic singinging that almost sounds like a theramin)

bukowski... must see if you ever read post office, factotum, ham on rye, women, hollywood... the real deal, unlike barfly

neal young concert movies...

rust never sleeps... never saw before, but one of best concert movies i'ver ever seen... seriously ROCKS!

heart of gold (?) i think is title, about 30 years later, he has mellowed considerably and this is an acoustic set that delves more into his country, folk & blues roots that were always just below the surface even of his hardest rockers... the track old man proves that his voice hasn't diminished in the slightest, and is the most moving rendition of any song i've ever heard him record... really stunning how beautiful and elevating that song is...

bought grateful dead movie... was heavily exposed to them before by a friend but never really "got it" (i preferred circa #####es brew-agharta/pangaea era electric miles)... after hearing eyes of the world that changed, & i can say i am a convert now & born again hard... i think i underestimated them, and never realized before just how SERIOUS they are as musicians, & not JUST a jam band (though they are most definitely THAT, too :) )...

Watched Saw 2. Saw and Saw 2 have quickly moved up to one of my all time favorite serial killer movie sets. The clever plot twists and dialogue are incredibly fun to watch (granted some of the acting in Saw was horrible). And just enough blood and guts to make it interesting. I really liked Saw 2. Can't wait to check out Saw 3.

Didn't care for it. It was worth the $3 or whatever but if it were $6, I would have flinched. Broken Flowers on the other hand, was actually quite good.

Seven Samurai is a top 10 movie of all time. Yojimbo is very good too. I remember liking Ran but wasn't blown away like I was with Seven Samurai.

Bringing out the Dead- It was an ok film, good enough to rent

Training Day-Still love Denzel's performance

Cars-still dont get what the hype was all about??? Mater and the Ghost Light was funnier

The Break Up-Not bad could of been better, like the ending

When a Man Loves a Woman-Very good film, very entertaining.
