Miller's Crossing

Saw the film a couple of times years ago, bought the DVD last year, finally watched it this week. Phemoninal. This is easily one of the top 10 most beautifully filmed movies ever made. A must-see.
I love that film. One of my all-time faves. It has some really pitch perfect moments. I tend to think it's the best work the Coen Bros ever did. "Raising Arizona" might be right there too but it's easy to love that film though.
People might laugh at this, but I think Miller's Crossing deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as Goodfellas and The Godfather.
please, enough with the hyperbole already.Miller's Crossing is a fine film for sure....but it is hardly on the short list of great movies, and definitely not even close to "easily one of the top 10 most beautifully filmed movies ever made". There is some snappy dialogue, fine acting and nice shots....but all in all it is just a decent film, not outstanding. I know everyone has their own opinion, but I can't phathom anyone having this movie in any top 10 list anywhere.
That's like, just your opinion man.

Beer League

Easily one of the best 5 movies ever made. Artie Lang at his absolute finest

(okay just kidding...movie sucked, didn't laugh one time. awful)

First effort or not- amazing movie (but you're right- that it's the least "polished" of the Coen films is a plus, IMO).
It may be the least indicative of their body of work, which is interesting in its own way. I haven't seen it in more than a few years actually...

I laughed twice.

Apocolypto

Very interesting movie, good action, nicely shot but a little too much running.

Would have liked to see more scenes in Aztec civilization, rather than 58 minutes of pure running/chasing. It was like the freaking French Connection (or Bourne Supremecy) on foot, in a jungle.

If you can't fathom why I'd place MC in a top ten most beautifully-filmed movies category then you haven't seen it recently.

In my top 5 and certainly better than either Godfather I or II. Not fishing. :goodposting:

"Old war welt. Only acts up aroung morons."

Bruce Lee - Enter the Dragon

One of the "classics" I'd never seen before. Entertaining, if not pretty dated, and the acting really left a lot to be desired. But it is BRUCE LEE!! You can't go wrong there.

WAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Recently watched a couple of films that have received mixed reviews here: Zodiac and Breech

Thought both were great. Thoroughly entertained, thought the pacing was fine because of the content, and loved the fact-based material. I'd highly recommend either to my friends.

Pan's Labyrinth -- There's nothing I can add that hasn't already been said. Its brilliant and sad and beautiful. I loved it.

Shortbus

Oh boy. This was unusual. Picture an Indy flick with pretty decent dialogue and add on completely explicit, non-censored, unsimulated sex. I mean like a porno with good dialogue. This is not a great movie, but there is something unique in seeing real actors get it on.

And if you are turned off by gay sex, skip it. About half the sex is between two men

that is a really odd movie...the first scene :X not what I had envisioned when pressing the Play button...needless to say the FF button was used repeatedly

The "unrated" label is used so rarely, I didn't even know that directors could use explicit sex in their films without an X rating.

No, the boy toy for the gay couple.

This was by the same guy who wrote Hedwig and the Angry Inch, yes? I should see this.

Yes, John Cameron Mitchell. I will have to check out Hedwig....that preview looked pretty interesting.

:) Loved Hedwig. Mitchell stars in it as well.

Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star.

Very good concept, but very poor execution. Spade couldn't pull it off. He wasn't believeable.

It would have been a much better flick if Sandler, Ferrell or even Steve Carrel had the lead role.

However, the ending almost saved it. There was a group sing-along ala "We Are The World" comprised of former child stars. It was friggin' hilarious.

Here was Maureen McCormick's verse:

Thank you for letting me in your living rooms/To entertain you before bed

But if one more person calls me Marcia

I'll bust his f****** head.

Totally. I liked his "That's a real weenie shrinker" line.

It definitely has flaws. But certainly unusual.

Black Snake Moan.

Big thumbs up. One of the most entertaining movies of the past year IMO. Would make my top 10 of year. Just edgy and hot. Soundtrack rocked as well.

Christina Ricci deserves some recognition during awards season for this role. Not to many actresses could have pulled this off.

Sam Jackson was real good too.

This could have easily been a disaster but the director somehow pulls it off. Same guy who did Hustle and Flow.

Fracture

I liked this movie alot. Hopkins and Gosling are both phenomenal actors. Just a solid movie and kept me entertained.

The Lookout - Really liked this one. Great dialogue and interesting characters.

Layer Cake - Entertaining. Maybe should have had the subtitles on? It was tough to tell what was being said sometimes.

Curse of the Golden Flower - I had mixed feelings about this one. It looked fantastic on bluray and the cinematography of the film was great. There were some good fight scenes. I just couldn't get into the story for some reason.

Blades of Glory - meh...typical Farrell and Heder

The Dog Problem - Giovanni Ribisi stars as an out of work writer whose therapist suggests a pet to help him out of his problems....the story revolves around his new pet and the people who he meets...not a bad flick, but not much to it...Ribisi put in another solid performance

Kickin it Old Skool - surprised me a little...thought it would be mindless, and well...it was, but it kept my attention throughout

Yes, yes, and more yes.

Last King of Scotland.

I like Forrest Witaker but I have always thought Yahphett Kotto was really Idi Amin.

Match Point

I am still trying decide if I liked this movie. It wore me out.

I watched nearly the entire movie with subtitles on. I wouldn't have had a clue without them.[mikemyersasmickjagger]

Just saw The Lives of Others.

German film that won the Oscar for Best Foreign Picture last year. Yep, it's the one that beat Pan's Labryinthe and I would dare to say deservedly so. It's about the Easy Germany in the 80's and there was this culture of paranoia and fear cultivated by the Stasis (the secret police.) It's more than that but I don't want to give too much away.

This is probably the best movie I've seen in a long, long time, and I watch a lot of movies. I'll probably watch it again later this week and I usually never watch movies twice. I highly recommend it.

flipping through the movie channels last night and Saw II was starting up...I couldn't turn the damned channel! I got pulled into it just to see what was going to happen. Great horror/suspense flick...GAME OVER

I've been DYING to see this... heard absolute raves like yours from friends and family who's opinions I respect.
