John Leguizamo Freak-Apparently it hit the hbo cycle this weekend. Saw it while flipping channels. Man, this was one of the very best standup shows I've seen. It was the story of his childhood. His story telling was amazing. His timing, his accents, etc. Brilliant. 4.5/5.

"Teeth"

If you enjoy horror mixed with some dark comedy and some serious social and religious undertones...watch this film...but do not invite any kids.

Don't read up on it...don't even look at the box...just rent it, sit back and be horrified in a whole new way.
Saw this at the midnight movie at my favorite Chicago theatre. Absolutely hilarious and awesome. ;)

Lars and the Real Girl: Was feeling down and wanted a "light" movie. Not exactly a rip-roaring comedy, but a very sweet movie with some great laughs. I'm amazed that anyone made this movie--it was definitely very odd. Great performances by everyone involved as well. I'd definitely recommend this one. 4/5

Charlie Wilson's War

Biiiiig
The wife and I watched this last night and really enjoyed it. One of the finest scenes in a movie I've seen in quite some time:mytagid = Math.floor( Math.random() * 100 );document.write("

Charlie and Gust on the balcony during the "Russia leaves" celebration. Gust tells Charlie the little boy/Zen master story, and that the crazies are rolling into Kandahar. Charlie's kind of giggly, and Gust throws Charlie's drink into the plants and demands that he listen. Charlie gets reflective...and we hear the plane flying by overhead. SO much pregnancy to that moment, as the viewer understands that arming the Mujahideen and driving out the Russians set the stage for 9/11, and the sound effect of the plane is freakin' brilliant. I got chills watching that, and at the end of the movie replayed that scene for my wife.

*** SPOILER ALERT! Click this link to display the potential spoiler text in this box. ***");document.close();

PSH is just brilliant. Hanks is fine, but Hoffman crushes. I loved that scene, and really enjoyed the movie on the whole.

Away From Her

Excellent movie about an older couple coping with alzheimer's. I loved this movie. Very smart, and beautifully filmed. I can't say enough good things about this movie.

i have been a fan of sarah polley's work as an actor since her work with atom egoyian on projects like "exotica" and "sweet hereafter". she's superb in "guinevere" with steve rea. i was surprised that she got the reins on a project like "away from her" but not surprised by her ability to get good work from actors. munro would be proud. i  julie christie.watched soderbergh's indie project "bubble" and was disappointed. it's one thing to work with unknown actors with their sort of unfinished take on the roles. it a different matter altogether when the script doesn't give them much to work with. could have been a very interesting project but felt half assed.

peckinpah's "cross of iron" also seen this weekend. i love coburn but he was saddled with a terrible, terrible script. it felt like a film re-written on the fly. i'm fine with some of peckinpah's work - the over the top violence with slo-mo deaths littered throughout it - like "the wild bunch" but this just seemed poorly executed.

Christie is lovely in this movie. And Polley's direction was top-notch. Amazing that Polley is a new director, as Away From Her is masterfull. The Sweet Hereafter is one of my all-time favorite movies.

I know that movie watching is a subjective experience, but did you really rate 27 Dresses over No Country for Old Men? :goodposting:

i think i have mentioned in this thread before about how much i dig egoyan's work. "exotica" is one of my favorite films and "sweet hereafter" is a happy marriage of banks (a favorite novelist) and egoyan. i liken him to cronenberg. maybe his only off note was "where the truth lies".

Watched Junebug this weekend. Here's a friggen tip for producers/marketers: IF IT IS NOT A COMEDY, DON'T FRIGGEN BILL IT AS A COMEDY. Jesus effing Christ.

I wouldn't say that the movie sucked. Actually, yes. Yes I would. Fuuck Junebuck. #### it right in the ###. There was nothing redeaming about it. Except for Amy Adams.

D'oh! I knew I would run into some folks here who did. I just can't get past the fact that it was a horribly depressing movie. Look, I was ready for what I was getting with Schindler's List and Hotel Rawanda. Maybe I could have fealt better in Junebug if I didn't feel ambushed. I had flashbacks to the horrific My Girl from high school.

I do agree it was dumb to market that movie as a comedy.

I thought it was funny in many parts. And I loved it. Big part of it for me, though, was that I KNOW these people--I mean, where I grew up, I went to about a million of those church-basement pot-lucks...I could just relate to the whole thing.

Just saying that comedy is the worng word to describe Junebug. "Slice of life" seems more appropriate.

Don't think they have that category at the ol' Blockbuster. ;)

Really? No good? I have Where The Truth Lies in my queue.
you'll be very disappointed with it. if you haven't seen "felicia's journey" then give that a try. "ararat" is solid as it kind of touches on some subject matter that he explored with "calendar". "the adjuster" is also really good early work.

Cool. Noted.

I actually enjoyed Cloverfield. Of course being able to fast forward through the party helped. The similarities to 9/11 when they were in the store and some other parts were a little tough to watch. I didn't get nauseous like I thought I might, even on my 80" screen. Overall, better than expected.

edit to add: It was also the first time I've smoked some weed in about a year. :goodposting:

Doesn't dissuade anyone from the theory that you, El Floppo, Smoovy Smoov and I are the same person.

I know that movie watching is a subjective experience, but did you really rate 27 Dresses over No Country for Old Men?
#1 This ratings also include my wifes opinions#2 I inately favor comedy over what was NCFOM? A slasher flick? #3 2.5 out of 5 is average, my wife thought 27 dresses was really good and made it a 3 above average. I thought NCFOM was "ok"#4 NCFOM I thought was cinematically, and visually excellent I found the mop headed loser indiscriminately killing people for no reason tedious. I guess the fact that he had a silencer on a shotgun and cow stunner was supposed to be really cool or something. Also the ending was thouroughly unsatisfying. #5 27 Dresses was what my wife ordered, a amusing light comedy romantic girly movie. NCFOM was supposed to be a masterpeice and I don't think it lived up to the hype. I didn't identify with any of the characters they all did some stupid things to move the plot along I thought the random fate intertwining angle was forced at times. #6 I can see how some people would like NCFOM but it is not my favorite genre. #7 If you have a date and you have to watch 27 dresses with them or NCFOM go with 27. My wife had no idea what was going on in NCFOM.

I watched Buying the Cow this weekend it was a video that was given to me some time ago and I never watched.

I was suprised that this nondescript comedy was actually pretty funny at times. Especially if you like Ryan Reynolds antics, also Alyssa Milano plays a stripper.

Wifey thought it was hilarious.

I am going to be brutally honest here - after reading the last couple posts I would seriously think about getting a new wife. If you don't want to go to that extreme and are good with secrets, a movie mistress might be a good alternative too. No secks needed per se, just somebody that will watch and enjoy a good movie now and again. :P

I love it when I/You/We are right.[rain] Watched Once again... this time with the wife. It was a pretty slight movie the first time around- wafer thin, this time. Still with the nice vibe, great music, and subtlety (like and appreciate the NON-Hollywood story and pacing)- but a lot like Oakland. [/parade]

A complete non-movie aside... got tickets to Patrick Stewart in Macbeth for Mom's Day- going next week and I can't wait. With a lot of theater friends and family, I got pretty jaded about theater by the time I was done with Grad School... I haven't been this excited about seeing something since True West with Phillip Seymour Hoffman and Charles C Reilly swapping roles.

Shakespeare is meant to be heard more than read, so that should be good. I just watched Kenneth Branaugh's filmed version of Othello, and that was very good.

Shakespear is a punk. It's all about Jean Luc Picard (lol... I first wrote that Jean Luc Godard).

the reviews have been fantastic for the production and stewart. you should have a great time. i saw him several years ago in a production of "the tempest" as prospero. julie taymor did the costume and design elements. it was maybe the best piece of broadway i have ever seen. totally memorable, especially with stewart owning the text, character and stage. totally jealous as "macbeth" is my favorite shakespeare.

Ok, trekkie-boy. Don't forget to wear your Spock ears.

The Savages: A story of a distant brother and sister dealing with an estranged, not particularly loved father who has Parkinson's disease and dementia after his girlfriend dies and he's left basically homeless. Very well done film. I loved the way it broke up the depressive subject matter with little gems of humor throughout. :BillyMays: The camera work was well done and really added to the film. PSH is stellar again. I would've preferred it to end in a different way, but overall it was a good film. 3.5/5

Mr Frost-Early 1990's flick. Jeff Goldbloom plays a mass murderer who claims to be the devil. Slow. However, great show. Great dialogue. Goldbloom is brilliant. Highly recommended. Again, not action packed, but very good and thought provoking. 4/5

The French Connection: Winner of the 1971 Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Lead Actor, Best Director, Best Editing, and Best Writing. It's a cop story about the heroin smuggling from France that was going on in the late 60's early 70's. It's held in high regard as a groundbreaking film for it's time. I thought it was just okay. To be fair, I'm not a fan of many older movies, but I just didn't see anything overly special. I really didn't like the ending. 2.5/5

Buying the Cow 2.5/5

Comedy/Guy worried about getting married comedy/romance
I am going to be brutally honest here - after reading the last couple posts I would seriously think about getting a new wife. If you don't want to go to that extreme and are good with secrets, a movie mistress might be a good alternative too. No secks needed per se, just somebody that will watch and enjoy a good movie now and again. :2cents:
Well here is my dilemma My tastes

Comedy

Sci FI = Wife will not watch

War = Wife will not watch

Wife tastes

Romance

Horror = I will not watch

Crime = I think are boring

Pretty much our cross over genre by default is Romantic Comedy

I am a comedy movie advocate, comedy is the red headed step child of the movie industry. I think a well written comedy is a "good movie" and that comedic actors get the shaft come award time.

NCFOM wasn't my thing I didn't care for it and gave it a average rating, sorry. I did think that the brand New Carl's Junior in the backround when Lou Allen got shot was a nice touch though.

Oh and what the heck, 5 cars in the desert and not one of them has any water in it? Then he comes back in the middle of the night with water like the guy with the belly wound would still be alive after baking and bleeding for day? Guess you gotta force that plot somehow.
