I haven't seen the Rat Pack original, but it has to be better.

let's be fair: it's a colossal waste of the considerable talents of almost everyone associated with the film(s). how many oscar award winners and nominees are used in these films? each of these films is a trifle and barely qualifies as "mind candy". that said, they are enjoyable for what they are. everyone on the screen seems to be enjoying themselves tremendously and if they could wink at the audience in every scene then they would. most audiences enjoy them because they feel like they're in on the joke too. i liked 11, disliked 12 considerably and felt 13 was unnecessary. i suspect they wanted to make 13 because 12 sucked so badly.

right. I mean, come on, at the end of 13, when Clooney makes a jab at Pitt's character telling him he should loosen up a little and have some kids. To me, I'm not expecting oscar caliber stuff, I am expecting a fun story, a nice con, and some people enjoying themselves.

This is true but I liked that it was more "believable". I also like the ending for the original much better that the remake. I agree with your assessment of the 3 "remakes"

No Country for Old Men: Pretty good movie, worthy of the hype. It did seem to drag on a bit in the middle though as it didn't seem the movie was really 'changing'. A lot of running, just about getting caught and then escaping. 4/5

Pathology: I really enjoyed this movie up to the ending which I'm still unsure whether I liked it or not. 4/5

The Love Guru: A few great laughs. Lots of jokes that are easily missed. The plot was horrible as with any comedy like this but a few scenes definitely saved the movie. The midget jokes were freakin hilarious. 2.5/5



You Don't Mess With The Zohan: Meh... not very funny. I didn't like how the movie started off very slapstick then tried to progress into something very serious at the end. I'm a Sandler fan but this is one of his worst. 2/5



What Happens In Vegas: Typical romantic comedy. Nothing original. A few laughs, guy/girl fight, guy/girl end up in love. The end. Sorry for the spoiler!

Rented "Felon" with Val Kilmer...and was surprised at how much I enjoyed it.It's worth the rental...put it on your list.

I agree that this movie is more enjoyable than it should be, unless you take time to think about what you are watching. It is basically an episode of Ultimate Fighter in a prison setting. It doesn't dive very deep into prison culture or psyche, but it pretends to. Solid preformance by Kilmer, he can really transform himself into something unrecognizable (Doc Holliday) when he puts his mind to it, his best effort since The Salton Sea. It was kind of fun to see the guy in the wheelchair from Oz in a reverse roll as a psychotic prison guard, but the plot was severely lacking. I gave it 2/5 on Netflix.

For whatever reason, first up was Thelma and Louise. Really didn't like this movie at all. Note to the ladies - if you are that unhappy with your station in life, just pack up and leave. No need to go on a robbing and killing spree...

Watched 21 last night. I really wanted it to be good, and found it average. Spacey was good as always. The lead character made me think that they wanted Tobey Maguire for that role.

As always, the book is much, much better.

I watched The Orphanage last night, and it was fantastic. I originally thought that it was directed by Guillermo del Toro, which is what interested me in the first place, only to find that he was the producer instead, but it was really really good. It's not really scary, more creepy than anything else, and moving at the same time. One of the better movies I have seen in a while. (5/5)

Very good description. I think they marketed this movie poorly, choosing to put the emphasis on the horror aspect.This is not a horror movie. Sure there are suspenseful moments, but more like a Hitchcock/Rod Serling story than anything Friday the 13th/Halloween/Freddie Kruger type.

I think the ending is terrific. This is a great movie that should be moved to the top of any movie lover's queue.

I couldn't say enough about this film. I get physically sick watching PSH dig himself a hole with his addiction. This should be a required film for anyone who finds themselves spending too much time at a casino, or is thinking of leaving their job to become a professional gambler.5/5

I was so excited to see Burn After Reading, and I was incredibly disappointed. It was a good film, but probably not even top 10 for the Coen brothers, BAR is obviously the only one I haven't seen at least 5 times but this is how I would rank them based on my personal tastes:1. Big Lebowski2. Miller's Crossing3. Ladykillers4. Hudsucker Proxy5. No Country For Old Men6. Raising Arizona7. Blood Simple8. Barton Fink9. O Brother Where Art Thou10. Fargo11. Burn After Reading12. The Man Who Wasn't There13. Intolerable CrueltyI would recommend all of these movies, none of them are duds, but some just don't mesh as well as the others. Bottom line is they make the most enjoyable movies in Hollywood and all of their films have nuances that can be picked up in multiple viewings. I still watch Big Lewbowski about once a month and notice things. Maybe I would appreciate it more with multiple viewings, but I'll wait for the DVD.

he's money in the bank for studios certainly. i'm not so sure he's midas when it comes to the product itself. the last good movie he did, imo, was "blackhawk down" and that was 7 years ago. he's an increasingly commercial director and is almost indistinguishable from his brother, tony scott, at this point in his career.

I enjoyed the acting between Deniro & Pacino and the story line was pretty good. They certainly play up many angles on who is doing the "Righteous Kills" but if you pay attention early thee is one line that pretty much Sets it in stone.

Slightly depressing at points but I'd recommend it if you enjoy good cop stories.

New Tim Robbins movie that was released on DVD yesterday. Fairly good character study even though it is pretty superficial. One of the few times I've ever had to turn my surround sound off to enjoy the movie. I remember car alarms being a lot more annoying 5-6 years ago, at least around my college campus, no experience with the big city life. Fans of Fight Club or other social angst movies should enjoy. William Hurt is really good but doesn't get a lot of screen time, he plays kind of a farce of Mayor Guliani, all the way down to the bad hair dye job. Third act was rather poor and forced but they had to wrap it up somehow.

he's money in the bank for studios certainly. i'm not so sure he's midas when it comes to the product itself. the last good movie he did, imo, was "blackhawk down" and that was 7 years ago. he's an increasingly commercial director and is almost indistinguishable from his brother, tony scott, at this point in his career.

That's a solid analysis. Though he generally makes movies that are entertaining to me. I don't think Gladiator is Citizen Kane, but I enjoy watching the movie. Certainly, Scott is no Scorsese. But he knows how to craft an engaging movie.

Not many laughs in this movie. But you know? I enjoyed it a lot. It was sold as a comedy, but it's definitely more in the sentimental / sweet range. Not great by any stretch, but earnest and genuine.

More of a throwback to the old martial arts movies of the 70's then some of the other recent ones after Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Kids will love it, adults can enjoy it. This is the most I've enjoyed Jackie Chan outside of the Rush Hour movies. Jet Li as the Monkey King was cool, though I'm not sure why they had him play two characters.3/5

Watch the battle between the MK and the Jade Emperor and you'll seek that the MK uses a hair to create a phantom that battles the JE. Matchstick Men, Kingdom of Heaven, and American Gangster are all really solid movies.

I went in with medium expectations so maybe that's why I just thought the story line was pretty good and the interaction between all the characters drew me in.

My personal opinion is that Scott sometimes try to tackle too much material. Gladiator, Blackhawk Down, Alien, Thelma and Lousie, and Bladerunner were his best movies because he kept the scope of the films narrow. They are based around one main character or a small group of characters in an isolated setting. In American Gangster, Kingdom of Heaven, and Matchstick Men I think he tried to stuff too much material into the films and they suffered because of it. I really enjoyed Hannibal for what it was, Matchstick Men is probably one of my 5 most hated movies of all time because of Nicholas Cage's acting. I never got a chance to watch the director's cut of Kingdom of Heaven, but I remember being completely lost in the movie theatre trying to watch it.

"gladiator" and "blackhawk down" stand out to me. the rest? not so interesting. the studios must love him because he's $$$.

Matchstick Men, Kingdom of Heaven, and American Gangster are all really solid movies.

Matchstick Men is probably one of my 5 most hated movies of all time because of Nicholas Cage's acting. I never got a chance to watch the director's cut of Kingdom of Heaven, but I remember being completely lost in the movie theatre trying to watch it.

I like Cage. I liked Allison Lohman even better.Kingdom of Heaven director's cut is really good. The movie would have been better had someone other than Orlando Bloom been the lead.

ETA: I'm a big Cage fan myself but I absolutely couldn't stand him in Matchstick Men. He is a nervous enough actor as it is without trying to play someone with Obsessive Compulsive disorder. Adaptation is in my top 20 list and I think the Rock was one of the best action movies ever made. I even enjoyed Ghost Rider more than I thought I would, but this was just too much for me.I'm going to add Kingdom of Heaven Director's cut to my queue and I'll report back. I remember really wanting to like it when it came out and it fell flat for me in the theatre.

I think you'll like it a lot more. The subplot with Sybilla's son adds a lot of depth to the characters and helps explain a lot of their motivations (doesn't that sound just like something a critic would say? ) .

he's money in the bank for studios certainly. i'm not so sure he's midas when it comes to the product itself. the last good movie he did, imo, was "blackhawk down" and that was 7 years ago. he's an increasingly commercial director and is almost indistinguishable from his brother, tony scott, at this point in his career.

That's a solid analysis. Though he generally makes movies that are entertaining to me. I don't think Gladiator is Citizen Kane, but I enjoy watching the movie. Certainly, Scott is no Scorsese. But he knows how to craft an engaging movie.

Aside from "Hannibal", Scott has had a great run this decade-

Any movie that has someone feeding Ray Liotta his own brain is aces in my book. The part where he disembowels the guy in the library and throws him out the window was great too. I enjoyed the Hannibal Lector character much more in Hannibal then SOL, except for of course the part where he escapes his cell.
