A few over the past couple of days:

The Dead Girl: Man, this was dark and grim...which means I loved it! It's a five-part movie, with each part shown from the perspective of a different person, and you don't really understand how all five stories interrelate until well into the movie. The centerpiece of the movie is a dead girl (named Krista Ann :loco: ), and her death impacts each of the other characters and their stories in ways that aren't immediately obvious. Imagine Crash or Babel, except done well. Underlying themes of grief, loss and connection are played out in an intelligent, adult fashion. Unbelievably well-acted. I'd like to watch this one again to take it all in more fully. Can't recommend it highly enough. 5/5
I liked this a good bit, but went in with very high expectations after reading reviews and hearing about it on top 10 lists and such a couple years back, but came away somewhat disappointed. Ill try to watch it again, but what I remember being most disappointed with was that the 1st 45-60 min was great how they went between the characters related stories, developed the characters, and kept the story really intriguing, but then it just felt like they had a contract to keep it under 90 minutes and the rest of the movie seemed really rushed and this took away from a lot of what was so good with the first 2/3rds.Does that make sense? I only saw it once, over a year ago, so I dont remember too many details, just that that was what I thought when it ended. Kind of like, "thats it?!"
Expectations can definitely play a big role. I didn't really know much about the movie--just had it on my list to see but not much memory of why. So with that I was probably more apt to be taken with it than if I held it to a higher expectations standard. I usually wait at least a couple of days to write a review because I need to see if a movie stuck with me, and this one definitely has. When I finished watching it, I probably would have rated it slightly lower, but as it keeps coming back to me day after day, I've really wanted to watch it again. As for the ending, I can completely understand why this would be a criticism. By that point, the characters had been so well-developed that we were left wanting to know more. That said, I never care whether a movie ties things up in a neat bow at the end (not saying that you do care about that), and in fact often find a movie more compelling when we're left to fill in some of the blanks ourselves. To me it makes it more thought-provoking and worthy of discussion. Have you seen Limbo? To me, that movie had one of the top three best endings ever. I never watched the Sopranos, but I suspect I would have loved the controversial ending of that show.

Pitt did a good job in Burn After Reading. Truly annoying.
I consider him to be a an above-average actor. He was quirky in Fight Club, but not sure I could envision someone playing that role better. He was solid in Seven. His performance in The Assassination of Jesse James was understated but strong.
I agree that Pitt is much more than a pretty face, he doesn't usually portray characters that you can relate with, but rather characters that are larger than life or outside the box. When you watch a guy like Bale or Hanks it is usually very easy to relate to their characters and how they react. Pitt's characters are still very believable particularly Tyler Durden and Jesse James as well as in Legends of the Fall to a lesser extent but he always seems to be in his own little world. He won't ever win an oscar except maybe as a supporting character, but he is always enjoyable for me to watch.ETA: Johnny Depp is also in about the same mold as an actor, you usually can't see yourself in the situations and actions of his characters, yet you are intrigued by them.
I like this analogy and its a fair assessment, but I dont think you can knock an actor for excelling roles like that either.Hes also had his share of 'relateable' roles - Babel, Sleepers, The Devil's Own, The Mexican (i found this entertaining, so sue me!), A River Runs Through It.

He's been good or more often very good in any movie Ive seen him in, and just the fact that he can take on such a wide spectrum of roles and excel at them says something about his skills.

At this point, I think in the general public's eyes his acting ability is overlooked a bit by his appearance, but I think by the time his career is done, it wont be

Im def interested in seeing Curious Case of Benjamin Button based on the book where the main character pretty much lives his life in reverse. Should be interesting, and yet another role thats different from his previous work

(And as for Depp, I agree hes a solid actor, but I think I like only a handful of his movies at best. Pitt on the other hand, I like most of his movies. That might just be genre preference and such, but just my 2 cents).
Yinzer, I'm with you 100% on this, I nearly always enjoy Pitt's movies. Fight Club and Assassination of Jesse James are both in my all time top 10. I'm not a big fan of Depp because of all the fanboy/girl appreciation he gets for doing nothing sometimes. I wasn't knocking Pitt's performances at all, he just takes different types of roles than a lot of other leading men and excels with him. Tyler Durden and the Pikey from Snatch are two obvious examples, I can't think of anyone else that could have pulled off either of those roles with the same intensity. And sadly enough, I too was a sap for the love story in the Mexican, I haven't seen it since the theaters but I enjoyed it. He was fantastic as a nut in 12 Monkeys with his hand gestures and antics. He also plays the strong brooding type of character because of the fire he can ignite in his eyes, examples of this would be Jesse James, Legends of the Fall, and Se7en.

BTW, lots of great discussions going on in here right now.
No joke...I made a post around this time yesterday, come back here an hour ago or so, and find 2+ pages to sift through
I would be posting more reviews but I just started watching the HBO series Rome and have been totally enthralled by it, I'm almost done with the 2nd and final season and will post a complete review. I'm kind of mad at myself for not checking this out before, but the bits I seen on HBO when it was running didn't impress me much, I had to sit and watch the entire story. My only gripe is that the 20 or so episodes span about a 30 year period so its hard to keep up with sometimes.

I think he really got snubbed not getting at least an oscar nomination for Assassination. IMO, he overshadowed Casey Affleck's performance in the movie who got nominated for best supporting actor (and who I think had a stronger performance himself in Gone Baby Gone). Def 1 of Pitts best to dateJDogg brought up Kalifornia earlier, and I think he pulled off his role as Early Grayce in that movie as effortlessly as he did his roles in Snatch and Fight Club, and similarly a role I cant see many other actors, if any, portraying as well as he did

Bound By Honor: Blood In, Blood Out

To put it simply, if you enjoyed Scarface, you would enjoy this movie about Mexican prison gangs. Be warned that it is 3 hours long and took me a couple of sittings to get through it. Lots of familiar faces in small roles (Delroy Lindo, Ving Rhames, and Billy Bob Thornton all stand out). Lots of cheese acting and pretty much everything you could stuff into a movie of this genre. There is gang banging, armored truck robberies, car chases, overdoses, prison shankings, everything...

Only complaint is if you are going to have something that long to build the characters you could attach a more complete or dramatic ending to it. As long as your not expecting Godfather, fans of the genre will enjoy.

3.5/5

I will probably have to call a few people "milkweed" today to get it out of my system. Best part of the movie was a white guy playing the Mexican lead, kind of like an Italian playing a Puerto Rican, it shouldn't work, but it does.
This is one of my top 10 favorite films. Probably have seen it at least 30 times, and at times, my college roommate and I could go line for line for huge stretches of the movie. The latest version they have out added some scenes and it hurts the overall flow, but still really good.
:goodposting: Vatos locos forever, jefe.
:thrustshandoutpalmdownshowingVLplaca:I have to agree with your comment about the cast and crew being passionate about the film, and therefore covering up flaws that were there. When you are counting on the guy from Double Dragon, the former Mr. Julia Roberts and the guy from Fame to lead your movie, you are just asking for trouble. But you could tell that they really sold out for their characters.

I have heard rumors of a 5 and a half hour version of the movie with more expansion on the stories of Paco and a bit more on Cruz, but haven't seen it. That is the thing about the movie, at 3 hours plus it goes fast because it feels like 3 different movies that fit nicely together.

Methinks you have fanboy issues.
:football:Fair enough, I was the one that brought up Depp, I like him in about 1/2 his material, the last two Pirates of the Caribbean were completely awful. Those top my "overrated" list, but just because I feel that way doesn't mean I don't enjoy some of their work. Like I said, I don't mean to come off as a hater, I try to be open minded.

Sweet. I would totally rewatch a longer version of that movie.VIVA LA RAZA!

My favorite line was "Whatta mean, jellybean?" by Benjamin BrattI liked how they didn't try to use subtitles for the half of the dialogue that wasn't in English, you either kept up with the tone of what they were saying, or it wasn't the movie for you. I'm glad you recommended it in the "Under the Radar" thread.

My favorite scenes are the dramatic musical punches. The two prisoners would stare each other in the eyes with a leval of deep respect and loyalty and he'd say, "Jefe!" and the music would go DUN DUNNNNNNNNNN!

And sadly enough, I too was a sap for the love story in the Mexican, I haven't seen it since the theaters but I enjoyed it.
The Mexican was panned by critics. But I remember finding that movie pretty entertaining.
James Gandolfini stole the show as the gay hitman taking fashion tips from Julia Roberts, still cracks me up just thinking about it.
I'm not a Julia Roberts fan, but Gandolfini was excellent.

Much like Tom Cruise, Roberts is a movie star that receives unwarranted critical praise as a good actor.

Hmmmm... didn't like this one enough to recommend it. Pretty sure I reviewed it in this thread but as with most things, I can't remember any of it.

Snatch: This movie gets better every time I watch it. Brad Pitt and Jason Statham are both amazing. Every character in the flick was just perfect; the bumbling black guys, Bullet Tooth Tony, Boris the Blade etc. 4/5

I enjoyed Pitt's performance in Meet Joe Black too.
The scene as he's walking out of the diner has to be on some sort of list for most surprising moments in a movie. Just about soiled myself the first time I saw that movie.

Pitt's a guy that gets a lot of unwarranted criticism, and I believe it's because he's good looking. Silly. Watch Pitt's cameo in True Romance, then watch him in Kalifornia. Those are about as diametrically-opposed roles as you will find. He is a fantastic actor.
Yes he is. I think I might have him rated higher than some people b/c he is in a lot of my favorite movies - 12 Monkeys, Seven, Fight Club, Kalifornia, Snatch, Sleepers, etc..

When I used to have the video store we had an "employee picks" section. The employees busted my chops because out of my 40 or so movies on the shelf 3/4 had either Pitt, Norton, or Cruise.

Imagine Crash or Babel, except done well.
I'm glad you said this. Crash is a piece of garbage. I spoke with someone who liked Crash, and she argued that the movie was good because it dealt with important subject matter. Wha? So did Do The Right Thing. The difference is that Crash stinks and Thing does not. Hell, Surf Nazis Must Die deals with racism. Is that a good movie?

I remember seeing the Babel trailer, and suddenly alarms in my head went off:

ALERT! ALERT! THIS LOOKS LIKE CRASH! ABANDON MOVIE! ABANDON MOVIE!

I think everyone has a handful of actors they like the most, so it makes sense that a lot of your favorite movies would feature those actors.

I'm with you 100% that Crash was garbage, haven't had the interest to watch Babel yet but I will get to it sometime.Surf Nazis Must Die wasn't so bad was it? I'm extremely biased too anything produced by Troma Studios, I don't think this was a film they made but rather bought the rights to, I used to own it on VHS back in high school but I don't remember a thing about it.

I liked the old Troma movies, and I used to own The Toxic Avenger and Class of Nuke 'Em High. But I only saw Surf Nazis once, and I remember large amounts of suck.

FWIW, Crash is great compared to Babel.

Watched We Are Marshall last night with the wife. Was exactly what I thought it was, and that is not always a bad thing. Matthew McConaughey was better than I thought he would be, Matthew Fox was OK. Fox has a knack for crying like a ##### on camera, so he has that going for him. I really want to see more of Kate Mara on screen. I forgot the crush I had on her in Nip/Tuck.

Once and The Good Shepard are on deck.

EDIT: I was all into the feel good story of Marshall as a football program until I looked it up today to see how true the movie got to the football facts. Found out that in 1969, the year before the crash, Marshall was being investigated for 166 violations of NCAA rules. That could have wiped out the program right there. Instead the NCAA swept it all away after the crash.

AgreedWhen I 1st saw Crash in theaters, it was a very random selection bc nothing else in theaters seemed interesting paired with I usually see movies at the theater like twice a year. I heard it was good, but didnt have any expectation really, so I came away thinking it was pretty good and enjoyed it

When I watched it again, it was just far too over the top and pigeonholed

Babel I didnt get the acclaim for at all. Even with decent direction and scenery and such, it was average at best. The 'link' to everybody was about as dumb as it gets. Amores Perros was much better, and though I havent seen it in awhile, Id probably say 21 Grams was better and I didnt even like that one really.

The Winslow Boy

David Mamet drama about a boy who gets expelled from a Naval academy for stealing. Good movie. While the subject matter really isn't very compelling, this is a well-made movie all around. I'd recommend this movie to people that liked Robert Altman's Gosford Park.

Rebecca Pidgeon haters will want to avoid this movie since she has a lot of screen time here.

As opposed to those other Mamet movies. In opposition, really, to Mamet's other movies. You know- the other movies made by Mamet.

David Mamet drama about a boy who gets expelled from a Naval academy for stealing. Good movie. While the subject matter really isn't very compelling, this is a well-made movie all around. I'd recommend this movie to people that liked Robert Altman's Gosford Park.

Rebecca Pidgeon haters will want to avoid this movie since she has a lot of screen time here.
i saw thi sfilm several years ago. i forgot he directed it. i remember thinking "if i wanted to watch a terrence ratigan play then i will go to the theatre..." mamet seems like a curious choice to handle a kind of period play like this. that said, i do enjoy some of ratigan's work that has been adapted for film. albert finney is pitch perfect in "the browning version", for example...

Yeah, aside from Rebecca Pidgeon, this movie doesn't have the timbre of a Mamet flick. The script doesn't feature all those patented Mamet vocal tics.

Pride and Glory

Very well done. Unlike recent cop dramas like We Own the Night and The Departed, this movie really accentuated the drama part and made you feel for the family that basically included all of the main characters. Thats what stood out to me, but the film as a whole really had this feel to it where you felt like you were watching cops&criminals in your own town. At first you might think its your typical cop drama, but as you continue watching you realize theres much more to it.

Colin Farrell probably had his best performance to date that Ive seen (though I have yet to see In Bruges, which I know is highly recommended here), and Jon Voight is solid. Noah Emmerich does great in a role a bit more highlighted than his typical supporting ones.

That said, Edward Norton was fantastic. His character's subtlties and distant personality gave him the ability to really show what he can do, and Norton doesnt disappoint. I thought Norton was good, but not up to his standards in Italian Job, Illusionist, and The Score, but I think this is undoubtedly his best performance since Fight Club. He's 1 of my favorite actors going, and maybe that swayed my thoughts on the movie a bit more to the positive side, but I think this is pretty easily his best performance in nearly a decade.

I wish they wouldve had another scene or 2 at the end, but thats minimal compared to how I feel the rest stood up.

4/5, Norton gives it an extra .5-.75

Whoever suggested Equilibrium gets a wholehearted "SECONDED" from me.

If you haven't seen this film and like action and/or Bale...it's a must!

:hot: Not sure if it was brought up here or in the "unknown" movie thread. Seems to be one of those movies that slip through the cracks and not many people have seen. Bale's popularity in through the roof now with the Batman movies, but up to this point people might have missed action movies like Equilibrium, Harsh Times, or Reign of Fire. Also movies that aren't in the genre like Laurel Canyon and The Machinist.

I just realized this week that I don't think I've even seen Reign of Fire (looked cheesy and I hate McConaughey). Probably pop that in soon. Also have The New World sitting at home to be watched too.

you have to be a hardcore malick fan to enjoy "The New World", i think. i'm maybe as big a fan of his work as you'll find around here and i found that film a little tedious. i'd recommend "days of heaven", "thin red line" and "badlands" before it. "days..." is in my top 5 of all time. it is just a glorious, wonderful film...

Transsiberean was better than expected. Russian-mob-drub-dealing-murder-suspense joint.

Ben Kingsley, Woody Harrelson, Kate Mara (boing), Eduardo Noriega

Reign of Fire is really cheesy, but is good for a couple good scenes. If you hate McConaughey you will most likely hate the movie. He is the gruff American military leader who wants to kill the dragons with military weaponry. Bale is the leader of the peaceful, simple, nature loving people who just want to live in harmony with the dragons. They team up and all hell breaks loose.

I've heard that about the movie. I think I've had the movie at home a few times now and haven't gotten around to watching it b/c of hearing this in a bunch of reviews about the movie. I'm sure I'll still watch it but it might be later rather than sooner as there is quite a pile collecting next to my TV.

Despite some gay secks, I can't say enough good things about Velvet Goldmine. A perfect example of Bale's range.

Even if youre a Bale fan, not much to see here. You above average action flick would be a better 2 hours spent then this, though I guess the dragons give it something different. Id still rather watch the remake of Shaft with Bale, SLJackson, and Jeffrey Wright than Reign of Fire with Bale and MM.

Casino Royale (6/10) - Loved the new Bond. Solid action sequences. Plot was a little too contrived and had too many holes.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdon of the Crystal Skull - 4/10. Just never could get into this movie. Too much of the same 'ol stuff and that stuff is looking dated.

Genghis Khan: To the ends of the earth - 3/10 - I really wanted to enjoy this movie, but I didn't. I know almost nothing about Genghs Khan, but the portrayal hardly seemed realistic.

City of God - 8.5/10 - Loved this portrayal of gang life in Rio de Janeiro.

Superhero Movie - 8/10 - I don't know what it was about this movie, but it had me LOL on several occasions. True lowbrow humor. In the style of the Scary Movie series, but strangely, I disliked those movies and liked this one.

You loved Casino Royale, but only a 6 ?If you want to check out a Genghis Khan flick, Id watch that new one "Mongol". I have yet to see it, but everything Ive heard about it has been positive

Yep. City of God is truly brilliant.

I would have enjoyed Casino Royale more if it wasn't a "Bond" movie because they took the character in a whole other direction, I have the feeling that Quantam of Solace is going to take it further in that direction.Indiana Jones, absolutely terrible, Lucas has gone so far off the deep end in the last 15 years it is ridiculous if he thinks anyone is still buying his shtick, he is making hundreds of millions on nostalgia alone.

Mongol can best be compared to a less violent and intense Braveheart, I enjoyed it, but nothing truely spectacular, its the first in a trilogy they are going to make about Khan I guess.

City of God, brilliant, enough said.
