Ghost Town. I'm a big fan of Ricky Gervais, but I worried whether his style of comedy would be well suited to playing a lead in a feature film like this. I thought it worked well and was very funny though. Definitely look forward to seeing whatever he does next.

Thanks for reminding me about this one. I remember the previews looking good when it was in theaters. Big Gervais fan too.

The Mrs. and I saw this tonight. Very funny.

Yikes, turned it off after Tea Leoni's presentation. Thought it really dragged up to that point.

Yeah, a couple of chuckles, a nice story but not a very good movie. I had hoped for more. 2/5 at best.

Righteous Kill, however, was a complete bag of crap. Seriously, we finally get Pacino and Deniro in the same flick, and this is what they decide to go with? Oof.

I know the majority that has seen this already seems to not have liked it, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. It doesnt touch Heat, and I wouldnt say it was well done or anything, but I thought it was pretty damn entertaining, kept moving at a fast pace the whole time, and while the dialogue left something to be desired usually, I thought DeNiro and Pacino were actually both the best either has been in a decade (say since Jackie Brown and Donnie Brasco) and the way they played off each other's character was great - and something Heat couldnt even offer.

I don't get the hate for this movie either. It was certainly no epic but I was entertained throughout. Compared to Pacino's performance in 88 minutes he deserves an Oscar for this.

I found 88 Minutes overkill and lacking substance, but still entertaining enough. I agree Pacino was typical of the last 20 years Pacino in 88Min, where as I found his character in Righteous Kill had subtleties I hadnt seen Pacino show on screen in a long time, plus the fantastic back and forth dialogue and cracks he and DeNiro had. I think Righteous Kill has more going for it than more people give it credit for. Maybe it was people going in with really high expectations after Heat or something, I dont know. For me, after seeing the previews that made it look pretty crappy, I went in with lower expectations and really liked it.

The Bucket List

Nothing unexpected, but a few amusing scenes. If you like to see Freeman and Nicholson act, they do it pretty well here. Better than the dumb comedies out there. 7.5/10

The Dark Half

Seems quite dated now, but a good adaptation of Stephen King's book. Very few changes to the story. 6.5/10

Burn After Reading

This grows on me the more I see it. After three viewings I am very familiar with it. Malkovich is brilliant and the others don't really put a foot wrong. I prefer Fargo though. 8/10

There Will Be Blood

I have also seen this three times now after adding it on Blu-ray. It's not for everyone. The first 14 minutes contain almost no dialog. The music can annoy some people but I think it's brilliant and effective. The cinematography is breathtaking. The pacing is slow, but I enjoyed the slow exposition and the detail in the story. Talking of detail, everything was spot on, right down to Plainview's filthy fingernails. Daniel Day-Lewis turns in arguably the best acting performance in the history of film. He says more with his eyes than most actors manage with their voice, with the possible exception of Gromit. Plainview makes me hang on every word. His matter-of-fact tone makes me believe that his claims cannot be untrue, even though many of them are. There are moments of humor, and heartbreaking scenes along with them. This is not an easy movie to watch, but I have never seen a better portrayal of how us humans can be driven to succeed at all costs if we allow it to happen. It annoys me that No Country for Old Men was released in the same year as both were filled with Oscar-worthy content. This is a masterpiece. 10/10.

Had these movies for a long time but never got around to watching them. I thought Waitress was going to be a chick flick and the girlfriend thought Resurrecting the Champ was a pure sports movie so we had just put them off.

Waitress: Good movie. Loved how horrible they made the chick's husband... guy was just an #######. The only thing I didn't like about it was how it insinuates that if you're in a bad relationship, it is perfectly okay to have an affair. Oh yeah, and Matlock was great! 3.5/5



Resurrecting the Champ: Sam Jackson's best performance IMO and Josh Hartnett was excellent (I don't get the hate for him). Did not see the big plot twist coming at all. 4/5

Generation Kill

Wow. Just outstanding. This seven part HBO miniseries is awesome. I have two parts left to go. I've always said that Apocalypse Now and Blackhawk Down were the most realistic war films I'd ever seen. But Generation Kill makes most war films look like Starship Troopers. I think this miniseries is a must-see. I cannot recommend it enough. Brilliant.

Reading the book right now and love it. Gonna bump this up the list and watch it when I get through it.

Yeah - was written by a reporter that rode in the Humvee with the troops. Love the different personalities in the group - racist rednecks to pretty boy that does yoga and tai chi. Also just ####ed up how many mistakes and the incompetence of the higher-ups. It's a great read.

Agree on all counts. Lewis is my favorite living actor. I think the thing that makes this movie for me is his relationship with his son.

Just saw this a couple weeks ago. Good movie, very good acting. Considering this character had basically no SLJ schtick, I might agree with you that its been his best so far. No doubt its 1 of his few best roles. I also, dont get the hate here for Hartnett. Maybe he's not great, but I cant think of a movie of his that Ive seen where he wasnt believable or that I didnt enjoy. Peter Coyote and Alan Alda were also good.Didnt see that twist either, that was great.

88 Minutes As a fan of Pacino, I thought this was absolutely dreadful. He totally dialed in the performance and there are so many plot holes it didn't have any "thrilling" moments for me. Dreadful, everyone involved could do better. 1/5

Eagle Eye And people complain about Michael Bay movies....I was expecting a sort of twist that never materialized. Unlike 88 minutes though this movie did have a few moments that caught my attention. Recommended as far as mindless action blockbuster movies go. Billy Bob turned in a likable performance. 2.5/5

Traitor Quality action thriller. Cheadle works well in the role. 3.5/5

I concur. If you like movies like that, I cannot say enough good things about Downfall. No one wants to watch a three hour German language film about Hitler. But I think this is one of the best movies I've ever seen in any genre.

I finally rented Mongol - Sergei Bodrov's first installment in the planned trilogy covering Ghengis Khan's life. My opinion is that it is an excellent movie, although I would have appreciated a bit more historical background. There are a few weaknesses, but overall a great epic story with great acting and a great score. The battle scenes will most likely please those that are fans of movies like Gladiator, Braveheart and 300, and of course are not entirely realistic. My wife left the room after 10 minutes, never to return (predictably). I am eagerly looking foward to part II.

Cool. It's an amazing movie. About as impartial and evenhanded as a movie can get. We all know that the Nazi party was awful, but a lesser movie would just show evil for three hours. This movie delves into the personalities, the emotions. Downfall reminds us that the Nazis were still people. And as we know, people are not usually 100% good or 100% bad.

If you haven't already, you should give The Football Factory a shot. While FF is much more gritty and violent, I preferred Hooligans to it, but each has it's own fans.Both are worth watching, I just liked Hooligan's story more.

The Rocker: Movie about an 80's drummer (Rainn Wilson aka Dwight Shrute) who gets kicked out of his band as soon as they make it big. 20 years later he hooks up with his nephew to play a gig at prom and it goes from there. Not too many laughs in this. Wilson is good but no one else in the movie even makes an attempt at a joke. 2.5/5

Exactly. So much more compelling. Agree that Penn was phenomenal, though.Watched a couple movies on a plane recently:

City of Men: As I was watching, I kept thinking "This is not as good as City of God. This is not as good as City of God." And I guess it wasn't, but as I've thought about it the past few days it has struck me just how good this movie really was. Performances were amazing, as always, and I love the complex relationship between to the two lead characters. Very well done, though not as good as City of God. 4/5

Cadillac Records 8/10

A good story and some great acting all around. Even Beyonce does a great job in this one. Mos Def and Adrian Brodie are both excellent as usual.

Twilight 7/10

Thought I was going to hate this one, but surprisingly it was not that bad at all. Worth a DVD rent 4 sure.

Grand Torino 7.5/10

Vintage Eastwood as the trailer suggests. If not for that I would have probably rated it much lower. The story was ho-hum.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button 8.5/10

I really enjoyed this one. Forrest Gump like and pretty long, but the story held my attention the whole way through.

The Wrestler 8/10

The story was OK, but Mickey Rouke really hits it out of the park as Randy "The Ram". His performance has Oscar written all over it. Best acting job I have seen in '07-'08 by far. Marissa Tome is smoking in it too.

Seven Pounds 7/10

Decent rental. Will Smith does a good job with the role and the story had me guessing most of the way through. My issue with the movie is that they didnt do a good enough job with the timing of the reveals. In spots i found myself waiting much too long for them to reveal more information. By the time they did, I had either figured it out on my own, or just didn't care as much as I would have, had they came out with it a little sooner. Worth a rent though.

HBO for free. Which is nice, because I literally turned it off two minutes into the movie. Lame voiceover by a bad young actor + movie clearly geared for teenagers = ####.

I am a big Rickey Gervais fan. But I couldn't get more than 15 minutes into this movie. I laughed out loud when clumps of stuff fell out of his horrible endoscopy test drink. But this movie isn't funny, and no one behaves in a way that is believable at all.

The Edukators: It's hard to review this movie without giving away key plot points. Never have I watched a movie before and then watched it immediately again, but I'm about to do so with this one. The movie starts with one of the best opening scenes I've ever seen. Then it becomes a very humane, balanced look at idealistic youth. From the NY Times: "The film is, to some extent, a sympathetic exploration of the state of political idealism in the contemporary West, where all avenues of resistance seem blocked or co-opted by the system. But it is also a sometimes mocking exposé of what the old left used to call political infantilism. The director is clearly fond of his radicals - and the terrific actors playing them do so with exemplary conviction - but he also points out the blind spots and contradictions that distort their view of the world and turn their self-styled heroism into self-dramatizing foolishness." Again I don't want to give anything away (and would recommend you not read any synopses or reviews if you see the movie), but I can't say enough about how good this one is. In German, by the way. Oh, and it doesn't hurt that the final scenes are played out against a background of Jeff Buckley's version of "Hallelujah". 8 billion/5

It's been pretty rare that krista and I have disagreed on films, but I had to on this one. I got the message the director was trying to send, but ultimately, I just didn't care. The acting was bad IMO, and the characters were very unlikeable. I spent the last 45 minutes just wishing it would hurry up and end. The Jeff Buckley usage is what kept it from getting a 1. (2/5)

I am in love with Rasario Dawson. She is beautiful, smart, and very sexy. That dance scene was great. Plus, this line was one of the funniest I heard all year:

"Dude, I just talked so much #### about Lord of the Rings that I made a super-geek throw up."

Ghost Town

I am a big Rickey Gervais fan. But I couldn't get more than 15 minutes into this movie. I laughed out loud when clumps of stuff fell out of his horrible endoscopy test drink. But this movie isn't funny, and no one behaves in a way that is believable at all.

how can you tell the movie isn't funny if you only watched the first 15 minutes of it, especially since you laughed out loud during part of that 15 minutes?

That bull#### with the female doctor at the beginning? I don't think it's a coincidence that she's an SNL comedian because SNL is usually equally unfunny.

I need to point out for the record that I am a huge Ricky Gervais fan. Extras and The Office are two of my favorite comedies. But I did try to watch the HBO Gervais stand up and I thought it was awful. I've listened to a lot of those Gervais podcasts, and he uses that same rambling, babbling style.

I am so on the fence about seeing this. For every person that loves it, there's another that hates it.

See it for RDJr. He's really outstanding and worth watching. Overall, the movie is much better early than it is later when it conforms to the Stiller comedic conventions a la "Zoolander".

I hated Zoolander, so that is a big red flag for me.

trust me, RDJr alone is worth sitting through the first half of the movie. It's a fantastic character realized.

regarding Tropic Thunder, despite some positive reviews, I went in to it with some pretty low expectations for the film. It didn't really exceed them much because a lot of it sucked, but it wasn't as awful as I thought it would be. It's not a good role for Jack Black and Ben Stiller pretty much sucks in it, but Robert Downey Jr and Tom Cruise make it worth seeing.

Agree 100% with this. Almost every comedy movie I watch lately does this to me - I think it's great for about 45min-1hour and then I get bored with it/the jokes stay about the same. Would recommend Tropic Thunder, but I really had problems sitting for it after about the 1hour mark. (I'll admit - I started to skim/FF through the rest). I would say the same about Pineapple express. I think I liked PE more than TT, but it's about the same - great for an hour or so, and then starts to break down and tries to be too much of an action movie. Franco was great in the movie too.

Complete Garbage. Maybe it's because It didn't live up to my expectations for a Pacino/RD collab, or maybe because you could see the ending coming a mile away. Either way, it sucked a heavy one.

i had already decided to skip this...this may be their first reunion since michael mann's heat... i like mann, & that movie had its moment, but i thought it was horrifically contrived, "hollywood" suspension-of-disbelief stretching to the breaking point that the criminal mastermind & lead detective would pow wow over a cup of joe...

and is it just me, or has al pacino only played one role since at least the 90s... AL PACINO...

So am I, and I had the opposite take. A couple laughs but it's easily my least favorite of his movies. (and yes - that includes Jersey Girl). Felt like what it was - a movie that wasn't made because he wanted to, but b/c he promised Mewes he would if he cleaned himself up. Couple good jokes for sure, but just felt forced and meh for me. And I really wish he'd stop putting his wife in his movies.

RDJ was good in it, but at least to me, he was rarely funny - which was something I didnt expect. I watched this flick 3-4 times, half of them drunk, and still didnt find it all that good. And actually, outside of Cruise's parts and a couple other occasional laughs, I thought the 1st half blew. While the 2nd half was a little more funny, the movie still didnt approach what I would expect out of this cast. I think another mistake was not giving Jack Black more time/lines. He def wouldve made it a little better.To each his own I guess, but I think the best box office comedies of 2008 were Role Models, Step Brothers, and Forgetting Sarah Marshall (in that order), and Tropic Thunder didnt come close to all of those - which IMO where some of the better comedies of the last few years.Id steer clear of TT if I were you JDD, but Id recommend any of those 3 if you need a laugh
