In think we are officially at the end of the road for marvel dominance.
There's still some great Marvel storylines on the shelf, but they may have destroyed their goodwill with the audience.

I don't think Fantastic Four is going to be the breakout hit they envision.
I’m sure they might but I think the market has been so oversaturated, people are burned out and even with teens/kids there is a sense Marvel is more their parents movies and less their movies.

Bet the farm that it won't.
Wasn't there already a couple mediocre Fantastic Four movies?
No. Depending on how you count there was one bad one, two awful ones, and one whose very existence was denied at one time.

5th time's a charm! Dont tell MoP or GM about this one. ;)

I hard disagree with you that the 2015 reboot was better than the 2 mid 2000s ones. They weren't great but still loads better than the 2015 one.
Fantastic Four (2005) >> Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Fantastic Four (2015 - it's really been that long ago!?)>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>(film that shall not be named)

Might even be worse than the Dolph Lundgren Punisher

At this point I’m gonna need Mutants to get me back into Marvel movies
at some point they will add the X-men if they can get the rights
I thought they did?
I think they have some characters but not the full roster? or maybe I just don't know what I'm talking about. There hasn't been an x-men marvel movie other than deadpool right?
Looks like they got the rights when they bought FOX in 2019 maybe just too much in the hopper for them to devote the time to it?

Iron Monkey

Pretty great, really. Imagine how much better The Matrix could have been had the flight scenes looked like the ones in this movie. That's what you get when you get martial artists to act rather than have to train actors in martial arts, I guess.

@General Malaise - it is a little older, but for you and others I rewatched Sound of Metal (2020) this week, and this is very much the type of movie I personally fall for. Fantastic acting, the sound design is off the charts (I recommend listening with headphones if possible), and a movie that really strikes an emotional nerve on several levels. I have not started the official list, but I wouldn't be surprised to see this show up on my top movies of the 21st century, and probably rated highly. If I have my dates right in my head, 2020 was a good year for these types of great dramas - Promising Young Woman, Portrait of a Lady on Fire, Minari, Never Rarely Sometimes Always, and Another Round were all from this year. I am sure I am missing some offhand, along with other personal favorites like Palm Springs and Pixar's Soul.

ETA: I am pretty sure it's on Prime.

I'm in! Thanks GB!

It was pretty good, i definitely have some tinnitus so could sympathize to some level

Added a few of those to my list (the ones I haven’t seen). Maybe one of them will pique the wife’s interest so when she asks me to find is something to watch and I rattle off 10 movies that she says no to and we end up watching some crap like Wonder Wheel instead

See, and if they suck you can blame random dope on the internet!

Went to see MI: The Final Reckoning yesterday. It was too long and too full of itself but it was still a fun night out at the movies.

The first hour plus was pretty brutal as the script tried to tie the entire 30 year universe together with lots of unnecessary exposition. I could have done without making Hunt's mission into a quest for redemption for something he unwittingly did a few movies ago but it wasn't as egregious as 007 and Blofeld being long lost brothers.

The second half more than made up for it: fine cast, great stuntwork, lots of action. If the series really is done, Cruise took it out with a bang albeit with some self-mythologizing and way too much dialogue about decompression effects along the way.

September 5 (2024 - on Prime) is a dramatization of the terror attacks on the 1972 Olympics focusing on the ABC Sports crew who broadcast the events to the world. Even though the outcome is known, there's a good amount of suspense that's intensified by the movie's gritty, documentary-like style.

The film's main characters work behind the camera in the claustrophobic control room where much of the action takes place. The filmmakers wisely stick with the famous archive video of Jim McKay but have an actor standing in for Peter Jennings.

Overall, it's pretty effective for what it is.

Thanks for mentioning this. I'll definitely check it out. I remember this event (I was 10) even though I didn't understand all of the "whys".

While reading your opening paragraph, my mind immediately went to "who'd they get to play McKay?". Good to know they kept the original footage.

Adored this movie and am happy you mentioned it again. I also loved everything else you mentioned, except Portrait of a Lady on Fire, only because I haven't seen it. :)

If you haven't watched, I highly recommend the documentary about these events, One Day in September.

Started Captain America Brave New World. Turned off 7 minutes in. I think I'm just over super hero movies. For 7 straight minutes I kept thinking one thing over and over. This is dumb. This is dumb.
A couple weeks ago I tried a couple I liked at the time and didn't make it far - Spiderman and Winter Soldier. Not quite the same without the kid into it and watching. Not bad, just wasn't interested and I doubt I will watch another one on my own.

I never really got the appeal of the superhero movies — hope Hollywood starts getting the message to fund other stuff.
The good news is they have. The horrible news is the "other stuff" is legacy sequels.

I was 50/50 on the superhero stuff we watched. I liked them when they are grounded more on earth with a smaller story like Spider-Man Homecoming or Winter Soldier. Once we start getting into space and chasing around for glowing orbs I lose interest more. I never got the love for GotG or Thor.

I watched Black Book. Never heard of it until today but it said it was expiring today on tubi so I decided to give it a try and thought it was pretty good. Biggest gripe is that it got a little long in the end and I don't feel like it was the best ending but I get it. I think it's worth a watch though. 7.5/10

The Girl With All The Gifts

A not very interesting mashup of Last of Us and I Am Legend where the plot is resolved by yelling. One review I read nailed it with the quote "ended one scene too late". I'd say two scenes but tomato/potato.

A tepid recommend if you need a low commitment watch. But it doesn't have as much to say as some reviews let on. Pretty good "post apocalypse on a budget' production value though

Tried watching Love Lies Bleeding last night but wife wasn’t into it so we went for The Skin I Live In instead and I fell asleep

Will try to revisit both especially since Skin was a rental

Mission Impossible was an incredible popcorn flick. Wow. Most fun I’ve had in theaters in years. Sub and plane stunts were A+++. Little too much talking early on but that’s fine.

Kind of got chills in the opening credits when the theme song kicked in and they showed clips from the old movies.
