Watched a few movies yesterday:

Meek's Crossing:

Gotta be in the right mood to watch this one, but I ended up liking it quite a bit. Not usually a fan of the westerns/frontier movies, but I got sucked in by the scenery and look of the movie despite the slow start. Also features some great acting (Michelle Williams, where have you gone). 7/10

Trainwreck:

Had some really funny parts at the start that had me rolling. Then it started to drag a bit as it started to get more relationshipy. Definitely not the strong suit of the movie, neither was the Lebron scenes. I think Amy Shumer wrote it, but it still felt like an Apatow movie in that it went on too long, and couldn't nail the emotional stuff. 5/10

Mad Max: Fury Road

I have been putting this one off, because it really didn't look like something I would like. I have never seen a Mad Max movie, so that might have something to do with it as well. Kept seeing it on a lot of the "best of" lists for the year, even on critics' list that I would think are a bit stuffier, so I figured I had to give it a go. Fully aware that I am in the minority, but I got bored pretty quickly with this one. Sure there was some damn good stunts and camera work to be seen, but I need more than that in order to sit through a couple hours of movie. Maybe it's because I have never seen any of the other movies, but I couldn't tell wtf was going half the time. I guess just chalk it up to not being my kind of movie? 4/10

Agree parts of Trainwreck got a little long in the tooth but the beginning and the ending( Wife and daughter about fell out of their chairs :lmao: during the ending sequence.) made up for it. I'd give it a 7/10..

Mad Max just does NOT transfer to Home viewing unless you have a 100" screen with full surround sound.. Watching it in the theater 9/10.. watching it at home 5/10..

Tom Hardy is NOT Mel Gibson....Hardy had no screen presence at all in this movie...Gibson owns that role

Watching some older movies lately, so decided to give Double Indemnity a shot. I'm gonna have to hold off on a real critique until I watch it again some day, since we had some people over and weren't paying 100% attention. But some of the rat-a-tat dialogue was a little over the top for me, baby. Also, watching him speak into the recorder went on too long and I find Fred MacMurray to be a little bland. I'll give it another view though.

San Andreas - I decided early on to treat this at about the same level as Sharknado, and it works best that way. We had fun just goofing on the ridiculousness of it all. Not sure if that's what they were going for. Some movies are so bad you can't even do that, so San Andreas gets an extra point for that. 2/5

Double Indemnity is awesome. Noir dialog is by its nature rat-a-tat.

I think the real star is E.G. Robinson.
It seemed a little more pronounced in this one. Maybe just takes some more getting used to.

That was the first time I got to see Robinson, except for Soylent Green, so that was fun. Looking forward to watching Little Caesar some day.

He's good in The Stranger too.
He's great in Key Largo, too. Very menacing counter to Bogart's everyman. Lauren Bacall and Lionel Barrymore are also among the cast.

I hear what you are saying, but I don't think seeing that movie in IMAX would have made a difference to me. I don't think any movie would raise up 4 points in ratings just due to screen size and theater sound for me.

Gravity might be one that I could think of - really didn't like that movie at all, but at the end of the movie I did think to myself "yeah, I wish I had seen that in 3D/IMAX." Nothing like that came to mind after watching Fury Road - mostly just glad it was over. Just not my thing.

I don't think the theater experience would help Mad Max. For me I found it pretty much incomprehensible. Hardy barely had any lines and pretty much grunted every line he did have and I didn't understand a word pretty much anyone else said, except for maybe Charlize. Visually fun but completely nonsensical. Still might watch it again for some mindless fun but really I don't get all the love it received either.

I guess I assumed part of this was me never seeing any of the Mad Max movies.

No, I mean I literally did not understand 90% of the dialogue not spoken by Charlize. Weird thing about Fury Road is I'm not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing.

Joy

3/5

Ho Hum. I enjoyed it but it's not a movie I would recommend to drop $10 in the theater for. Although our local theater has a $5 Tuesday special.

Good performances, good story, Good rental.

I wasn't a huge fan of American Hustle. I would if it would do that director/actors combo good to work with other people. (I haven't seen Joy yet).

Heavy metal hood ornament was the single best thing on film in the last few years.

There may have been some other stuff in the movie, I just cant remember any of it in spite of seeing it on the big screen.

Mad Max is better enjoyed if you go in knowing that the visuals ARE the story.

This is contrary to almost all other movies where the visuals exist in service of the story.

That was great, and so much better than oily Lost Boys saxophone guy.

I guess I didn't think the visuals were all that great either. Not blown away by the action as I was in other movies. I realize a bit of the stuff they have to cg up, it's just not what interests me.

I'd mostly agree although more credit has to be given to them for using more practical effects than CGI.But ultimately I'd say I wasn't all that hyped about what I saw. Guitar guy, as a concept, was dumb because to me it was so completely non-sensical. The whole concept really was.

ok, so for the best boobs ever on film, so far, we have:

Betsy Russell - Private School, when she was riding bareback while bareback.
Heather Thomas in Zapped
Halle Barry in Swordfish

Jennifer Connolly in The Hot Spot

He is basically there to represent "old" battles like the American Revolutionary War where there were drummers walking next to the troops.. Not sure how they sold people on that one..

Hey.. we are going to battle.. need you to go with and beat your drum.. no weapon for you!!

Has anyone seen the animated movie "Inside Out"? My g/f had me rent this to watch with her daughter. I'm not big on kids/animated movies (except Toy Story). Will I be falling asleep or is it somewhat enjoyable?

Yeah, that is the whole movie for me. I am not above stupid action movies, and feel free to flame away, but I remember having more fun with something dumb like the remake of Death Race.

I'm a big fan of the post-apocalyptic stuff, and that includes the Mad Max stuff. And after hearing the great reviews here, I was pumped up to watch it. IMO, it was one big MEH. It was enjoyable enough, and I'm glad to have seen it, but it wasn't all it was hyped up to be.

Agree with the first part but  as to the second. Maybe I am misreading your intent but don't most movies nowadays act as vehicles for visual effects over story? Michael Bay comes to mind as the worst perpetrator but there are tons of other examples.

BBRAWSHLINK!!!

Well, yes and no. Mad Max doesn't even pretend there's a story. I don't even want to talk about the classification of Michael Bay movies. :X

I haven't seen it at home yet, but at the theater it was insane...like riding a roller coaster.

I saw 2 movies I had been wanting to see for a while. Both disappointed.

Focus- 4/10 It was challenging to keep my attention. God, Margot is HOT.

Entourage- 5/10 It wasn't much different than the series, but I guess I was expecting more out of a movie. There's a blond girl that E is dating, and during their sex scene she has one of the best rear ends I've seen in an appropriate movie.

I guess I was also just surprised at how many critics also had Max Mad very high on their year end lists.
I liked it but I don't get any of the Oscar buzz for any of the major categories.
If they can pick Birdman as Best Picture, then Fury Road deserves consideration.
Lot of hidden parallels in these two movies.
Lol.

I liked Birdman a lot.

Oh... more bewbs/butt. I probably already mentioned her upthread, but it's worth repeating: Phoebe Cates in that movie thats the desert version of Blue Lagoo. Holy wow.
