FEBRUARY MOVIES

I liked The Menu and thought it was hilarious. It was supposed to be a comedy right?
I am pretty sure- certainly made me laugh. Tuesday was taco night. Taco Tuesday!
Never saw The Two Jakes before. The pieces were all there but it's an impossible task to measure up to Chinatown. I thought the tying together of the two films' stories was forced and obvious
I watched this recently as well- part of my slow goal to watch a lot of questionable sequels. So far, I think this is the best one I've seen but that isn't saying much since I am comparing it to movies like Basic Instinct 2, Airplane 2 and Stayin' Alive.
Birdman was the only other "B" movie. I don't know what I was expecting but the movie defied them. I think the single shot technique was more effective in the confined space of Birdman than in 1917 where it just seemed like a gimmick.
I need to rewatch this. I saw it when it came out and thought it was great, worthy of best picture but I swear I've not heard a single person speak fondly of it since it won.
For Black History Month, I watched two biographies of 60s Black nationalist leaders. Malcolm X was very good but Spike held every shot a couple of beats too long which really added up. By comparison, Lumumbawas a fast paced story of the first Prime Minister of the Congo that didn't waste much time on historical exposition.
I also watched some Black History Month movies but went a different direction, a little more geared towards fun and comedy.

Superfly, Cleopatra Jones, Cleopatra Jones and the Casino of Gold, Shaft, Shaft's Big Score, The Watermelon Woman, To Sleep with Anger, Nope, The Woman King and the best of them all Cooley High.

Shaft was the only rewatch, the rest were new to me. I was most disappointed in Nope. It was entertaining and had some interesting wrinkles but it's my least favorite of the 3 Peele horror films and one I doubt I'll ever watch again. Cooley High was by far the best. That is a classic on par with Fast Times, Dazed, Clueless, American Graffiti. I saw Criterion is releasing it and there is a good chance I will buy it as it's a movie I can see rewatching regularly. My surprise was The Watermelon Woman. Funny, sexy, interesting. A totally unique film and I love the C.L.I.T. bit.- Center for Lesbian Information and Technology.

Could I interest you in some Magic Mike's Last Dance?

Cooley High was directed by my Milwaukee homie Michael Schultz who also directed Greased Lightning which I watched this month. Schultz did both of those films along with bigger hits Car Wash and Which Way Is Up on his way up the career ladder. He fell off the ladder into the pile of crap that was the Sergeant Pepper movie. It's tough for anyone to recover from a bomb like that and it's even harder for a Black director. He kept working though and Krush Groove and The Last Dragon are 80s cult classics.

That's pretty common for Oscar Best Picture winners nowadays. You'd probably have to go back to the third Lord of the Rings picture to find a film that generated half the pop culture buzz that Cocaine Bear did.

I thought this movie was laughably bad and nowhere near worthy of even oscar consideration let alone winning. IMO, by far the worst winner ever, followed by Moonlight.

Started watching this one over the weekend, but still need to finish. Even though I like Inarritu’s stuff, I never got around to this one for unknown reasons.

My wife and I went and saw Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre the the theater last night since we have a Regal Unlimited pass. I had heard basically no buzz about it other than maybe a single trailer or commercial somewhere, but I really loved the movie. It's directed by Guy Ritchie and it's got a great cast with Jason Statham, Aubrey Plaza, Hugh Grant, Josh Hartnett, and Cary Elwes.

I'm generally a big Guy Ritchie fan (Snatch is one of my all-time favs) so I may be a bit biased, but I highly recommend it. It's got a bunch of action as well as some hilarious banter between the various characters. The plot isn't perfect, but the action and dialog more than makes up for it.

Best Of Enemies

Documentary about the '68 "debates" between William F Buckley and Gore Vidal.

Not very interesting. Two big intellects basically calling each other doody heads climaxing in grotesque slurs.

80s finally watched Heat- hooah!

Now I need to return the favor and finally watch a couple of your suggestions. :bag: I guess I did knock out Amadeus last year finally. I did intend to buy Lawrence of Arabia 4K the other day, but when I looked it was about $100+. Nope. I ended up with Blade Runner 2049 and Pulp Fiction instead.
Lawrence of Arabia in 4k is $7 on iTunes this week. They do the best streaming 4k IMO.

There are several good titles this week actually (Bridge On The River Kwai, Casablanca, etc.)...

I never seem to use Apple anything. I think I ended up canceling Apple+ as well.
Do you use any digital service? Vudu, Prime, Google Play?

You can download any of their apps to, say, a Roku and buy/rent any movies they have. I just mean that Apple has the best quality for streaming.

I have Prime. They don't seem to have near the deals that you describe with Apple, and it's often not in 4K when I look for things.

I know snobs like @Ilov80s are too good to be bothered with ads ;) , but I keep falling for Tubi and watching **** on there. Where else can a stream the double feature of Drop Dead Fred and Like Father Like Son, dammit!!??

Seriously though, I am usually surprised when I poke around the app. Everything from Rocky to Das Boot to Night of the Comet to Coffy. It really is a decent option for people on a budget or just looking to supplement.

Not sure if it’s snobbery or just impatience

I hear you, it's not optimal viewing. Sadly, the ads are probably a net positive because they tend to wake me up if I am dozing off.

Tubi gives me built in bathroom and browsing breaks. There's a lot you can get done in 2-3 minutes.

Their catalog is broader than any of the big subscription services with a ton of oddball stuff that used to live on Amazon Prime before they refocused on meh original content.

I think Tubi is the best of the free with ads services. Roku, Crackle, Freevee, Redbox and the rest seem to have more frequent commercial breaks. I also like that Tubi gives me a short countdown that a break is coming up.

love Tubi - lots of good stuff

i have been hammering the free YouTube for all kinds of great documentaries - whatever the subject, they have a ton of them - and the Vice episodes are great to have on demand (or at least whatever has been posted to youtube.

I like Freevee and Tubi, great content for a free service. I do notice that their sound is super low. Other channels I watch with the sound in the 25-30 range but have to crank it up to 65-75 for those channels.

1923 (Paramount +)

The ongoing prequal to Yellowstone. I thought the previous series 1883 was not just better, I thought it was a masterpiece. With 1883 only being one season I was disappointed by the time leap from 1883 to 1923. I felt a lot better about the story telling of 1923 when I discovered there is a second season coming.
I really liked this show!
There are three major story lines going on all at once. The survival of the Dutton Ranch as we know it in Yellowstone led by Harrison Ford and Helen Mirran. Mirran was great! I had to do a double take when I saw Timothy Dalton on the screen.
The story line of who I suspect is John Dutton's (Costner) grandfather, and his life between WW1 and finding his way back to Montana.
The third story line of the Native Americans, which without sharing anything, it was my favorite storyline in the series, and left you completely in the dark trying to connect the dots to Yellowstone.

Good stuff. I wish Yellowstone didn't become such an outrageous program of its own, the prequal series have been really entertaining.

I love 2 out of the 3 story lines but the travel back to Montana has been dragged on way too long imo.

I agree. One less episode in Africa and skip the Tug Boat episode and they could have added more to either of the other two story lines.

The Offer (Paramount +)

10 Episode Drama Series telling the story of how the movie The Godfather was made staring Miles Teller as the movie Producer. Had this been about any other movie I probably wouldn't have bothered. But The Godfather is my all-time favorite. In my opinion The Godfather is flawless. Halfway through I decided I wasn't going to bother fact checking any of the story lines. Some of it was pretty outrageous, but it was entertaining.
I always wondered what the role of a movie producer was. While I'm sure a lot of the story was true, and a lot of it was exaggerated, if you are a fan of the movie, I suspect you would be a fan of this series.....or at least like it enough that you will find it worth your time to watch.

It's not a series to watch to see actors imitating actors to see how much they look like one another, but I will say, the guy that played Pacino had his voice down perfectly, and the Coppola and Puzo characters were well done. Actor Matthew Goode plays Studio Exec Robert Evans. I don't know anything about Robert Evans, but if Hollywood ever needs someone to play Cary Grant, this guy is it.

Loved this.

Nebraska - very good movie about a man clearly experiencing Alzheimer’s or Dementia and his son kind of giving in to his wishes despite his dad being terrible for all his life. Shot in black and white, Bruce Dern kills it, Odenkirk is in it, has to be the inspiration for the last season of Better Call Saul. Really enjoyable scenery too.

I don't know if there is a designated "upcoming movies" thread so I'll just post this here:

BlackBerry Trailer

Opening in theaters May 12th, The true story of the meteoric rise & catastrophic demise of the world's first smartphone, BLACKBERRY is a whirlwind ride through a ruthlessly competitive Silicon Valley at breakneck speeds.

Starring: Jay Baruchel, Glenn Howerton, Matt Johnson
Director: Matt Johnson

Thanks, I'll see if I can find it. I like Bruce Dern movies

Silent Running is one of my all-time favorites.

Loved that movie, I need to give it another watch. At the time I was pulling hard for it as a dark horse Oscar movie. It got a bunch of nominations but I think it was shut out.

Orange is the New Black

I've been watching this for a few weeks, and just completed S2. I really liked S1, and S2 was ok. Has anyone watched this series all the way through? Does this burn out? The first episode of S3 was pretty dull.

Stop now.. I think we made it half way through season 4 and wished we hadn't.. First 2 season were worth watching. But obvious the writers had idea where to go from there and just threw darts at a wall and said "go with that".

Go watch Wentworth instead.. We enjoyed that one to the satisfying ending

Alexander Payne has another movie that's supposed to come out this year. It'll be his first since 2017's Downsizing and only his second in the decade since he directed Nebraska.

Tulsa King (Paramount +)

Really cheesy. Stallone's face looks cartoonish. And there's a scene in the last episode where he gives a motivation speech to his new crew to help them not be afraid that is so bad its actually comical. Unfortunately, "comical" was not the goal. And the ensuing gunfight scene was probably supposed to be a climactic scene and it was so horribly produced.

The show had great potential. With a different lead, and I like Stallone, but this was a B-Quality performance, (along with Domenick Lombardozzi who was awful ), and better script, and better actors throughout.

Having said all that. I actually liked the show and I was mildly entertained. It is however really bad. Weird that Taylor Sheridan was at the helm.

The Tragedy of Macbeth

I don't have anything to compare it to - I've never read it or seen it performed, stage or screen - but I thought this was excellent.
I thought it didn’t get nearly enough love last year. I thought everything about it was pretty much perfect. It’s a little odd because Macbeth and Lady Macbeth are typically younger, ambitious characters where this casting maybe gives it more of a bitter jealousy. It’s up there with Kurosawa’s Throne of Blood for best interpretation of Macbeth that I’ve seen.

I quit after E1 of Season 3. I'll tuck the rest of the series away for next winter when I am bored enough to watch.

A strange story but my wife and I both enjoyed The Banshees of Inisherin. Great acting all around and a movie we talked about quite a bit the next day.
We enjoyed it and it definitely gave you thinks to discuss, However, I still buy into the extreme transformation the main character went through so quickly. I get some bad things happened to him, but he went dark pretty quick

A couple of odd double features this week:

2001 + A Clockwork Orange

The Gift + A Simple Plan.

I think I underrate 2001 and I still don't click much with Clockwork. The Gift was way worse than I remembered, and Simple Plan holds up quite nicely.

Leave Her To Heaven

It was all right. Liked it once, probably wont watch again - similar to another Tierney starrer "Laura".

The sad part is life imitating art with Tierney herself having mental illness.

I wonder how her character was perceived in 1945, before there was more sympathy for mental illness. Ellen wasn't just possessive, she was sick. Her character is rather sympathetic in 2023. I think I'd have wished for Danny to drown too - what an annoying kid.

It was a good performance by Tierney though. It's always about the subtleties for me and she had them in spades.
