Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon is one that I recommend a lot in the vein of Scream, Tucker and Dale, and Cabin in the Woods. Not quite as good as those, but it's also the one people haven't gotten to. That is on AMC as well.

I was a big fan of Ti West's before X and Pearl. I have recommended all 3 of: Innkeepers, House of the Devil, and Sacrament. Those fly under the radar a little as well and look like they are on Peacock or Prime.

If over the top gore in a fun way is up anybody's alley, Deathgasm and Dead Snow 2 are on Peacock.

I'm sure more will pop out as I start my search...

For a one month and drop situation, the $9 add on for AMC+ on Prime is well worth it for the horror movies since it comes with Shudder as well.

I would say that is about the order of quality too. House of the Devil is my favorite of the 3 I listed.

I've got some old school horror movies on disc that I just got/haven't played yet that I am doing for sure: Freaks, Nosferatu, 40's Phantom of the Opera, Creature of the Black Lagoon, Don't Look Now, Carrie, Rosemary's Baby. I have seen them all before but just been awhile and haven't checked out the discs yet.

It's not streaming, but my library system has it so maybe yours does. I love A Tale of Two Sisters. It's one of the first foreign horror movies I recommend to people along with stuff like Let the Right One In, [rec], and The Orphanage.

That's a nice pull. I added it to my queue a couple months ago remembering vaguely really liking it and recommending it to people at the store. I think this will get added to my 31 for the month + (I am going to start on my day off tomorrow and cheat a tad).

Snake and Mongoose (2013 - on Prime) is like a poor man's Ford vs. Ferrari. It tells the story of the rivalry/friendship of 60s-70s drag racers Don "The Snake" Prudhomme and Tom "The Mongoose" McEwen.

There are a bunch of sports movie cliches and the family melodrama is pretty thick at times but I enjoyed my time watching it. It's a relatively low budget film but the filmmakers do a nice job of mixing in cool archival drag racing footage and the actors look enough like the real life drivers to be convincing. The casting overall is strong with Tim Blake Nelson and Fred Dryer (!) is memorable supporting roles.

Thanks for recommending this. I remember the whole thing when I was a boy, but i was too young to understand any of the real story. I enjoyed this and it move along pretty well. I did like seeing the old racing footage my brother and I used to watch on Wide World of Sports.

As above, so below is ok and a decent watch on a dark night. Would actually watch a sequel if it happened.

I wouldn't say any of the above that I've seen are avoids, but IMO Pieces doesn't hold up super well and Poughkeepsie Tapes is a tough watch from what I remember. I'm usually a sucker for found footage, so I loved Hell House, LLC and watched that with the wife last year. I still have yet to watch Mandy and will admit Mr. Cage is a reason I haven't tried yet. I also confuse Lake Mungo with Eden Lake. Pretty sure Mungo is the found footage we also watched and liked.

Or if there shouldn't even be a camera at times. I also find they rely too much on jump scares. And sometimes the acting doesn't seem real. They also sometimes are too shaky or too dark. V/H/S didn't really need to be a FF movie. It was more of an anthology. But [REC] was amazing. So was The Taking of Deborah Logan.
Looking more into Poughkeepsie Tapes and I think I'll skip that one.

Not really that scary, but one of the ones I've been most impressed with was The Bay. I need to rewatch with fresh eyes, but I remember being impressed with how it was put together - using police dash cams, security cameras, things like that. I have a specific fear of old haunted insane asylums, so Grave Encounters has always been at the top of my list too.

I hear you about the acting. It's probably frowned upon to mess with them too much like Blair Witch nowadays though.

Yeah, I was shocked at how bad this was, then impressed by how awesome it was as it went along. Most of the crap parts of the first movie had great explanations in the second telling.

And the credits confuse me - are we watching the making of the fake making of a fake movie?

Thanks for that! Definitely some I haven't seen and a couple I haven't heard of.
I would flip flop your #1 and #2, but the original NotLD holds a special place for me. It's my favorite movie of any kind. My parents let me stay up late to watch it one night. I don't remember how old I was but probably like 9 or 10. I had nightmares for two nights. They started all over again the next night. I was hooked after that and watched it every time it came on TV.
I would probably move Train to Busan to #3 and move the rest down. After #7, it's hard to judge. I would have the original Dawn of the Dead on the list instead of the 2004 version and probably put it at #4, again because of the experience. We got someone to sneak us in to the theater to see it when it was released. I was 14. Might be #3 for me.

I saw the original Dawn of the Dead so long ago that I can't rank it, and I haven't found it on any of my streaming services. When I saw it originally, I only had NOTLD to compare it to, and I didn't like it as much... but I know everyone likes it, so I'll give it another shot when it pops up on one of my services.

I will say, though - I'm having a hard time making it through some of the 70s and 80s zombie movies. I've pretty much stopped watching them for a while now after trying to slog through some from that era that have relatively high ratings... I can only take so much. I also haven't been loving Romero movies as much as I expected to.

I remember liking the Friday the 13th show at the time. Wasn't it about a family that ran an antique store that had weird/haunted collectables or something. I also watched the Freddy show too, of course.

Nice, I knew Criterion would deliver. In October they have 3 horror themes that have a ton of interesting looking titles. 90s Horror, Art House Horror, and Pre-Code Horror.

I liked it even as a purist for the original. They do some cool twists from the first one. Not as good obviously, but worth checking out, imo.

I'm having a rough go of 80s horror movies. Time has not been kind to the movies of the decade in general IMO, but especially so in horror movies. So many crappy sequels and slashers to wade through.

There's still good stuff out there, but when I try to take my nostalgia blinders off a bit, I realize just how dominant that stuff was in the 80s and how bad many of those franchises got. Hell, watching the OG Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday the 13th and I start to doubt how good they were to begin with. Maybe I'm just mostly done with slashers as I turn into an old grump, and that's fine too. As my warm-up for October I watched a Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 and Halloween 3 double feature. I had fun with those, except now I have the Silver Shamrock song stuck in my head.
