You might want to try some more female-centric fare.
For sure ,the Field of Dreams comes from she really likes baseball. When she was younger, she refused to play softball and played baseball with all boys. Also, one of her biggest requests in general for movies was movies with lots of cute guys so IDK what to do with that lol. I also want her to try therapy so I thought Good Will Hunting might give a good impression plus it has a cute romance.

But yes, as a dad with a daughter, please give me some suggestions. I would very much appreciate it.

I've mentioned my 16 year old sort of adopted daugher and our bonding over movies. I am trying to see if she's really got the movie bug and checking out some more serious movies beyond the cartoon movies she especially loves. When she said she loved Karate Kid, Back to the Future and Baby Driver I figured she might have some taste beyond the Tangled, Inside Out, Minions stuff. So far, we are 3 for 3:

Jaws: said it was really scary, jumped a couple times, was engaged all through

Stand By Me: she laughed a ton, thought the train sequence was terriftying and had a bunch of questions about what happened to the kid actors, enjoyed it

The Shawshank Redemption: fell asleep about 30 mins in and I woke her offering to take her home but she said she was fine. I was really worried I pushed too much too quick with this. I mean it is a movie set 80 years ago about a bunch of guys in prison. When Brooks goes, I thought I heard a little sniffle but was expecting more. Ok, maybe not for for but when it seems like maybe Andy hung himself and we get the dramatic disappearence she was begging me to tell her if he hung himself or was alive and what happened. When Red got out, she said she just knew he would stay in the same room Brooks was in and at the end she said it was such a good movie and had the best ending ever.

So yeah, as someone who grew up watching movies with his dad, this is like a dream come true. She has never once looked at her phone during a movie. Next 2 up are Field of Dreams and Good Will Hunting.
Have you tried John Hughes?
No, I've tried literally the 3 movies you see. Though I have asked about a lot and she has seen them. She seems to have good taste and has been exposed to a decent amount so that's what got me trying more and more. I suggested The Princess Bride to her a few months ago and she watched it on her own. She said she liked it but didn't seem to love it so I guess that was maybe a slight miss based on her reaction. I for sure have Ferris Bueller on my shortlist.
I just watched 16 Candles with my 13yo. I think she liked Breakfast Club more, even though she usually loves racist portrayals of Asian people.

What about Whale Rider?

Yeah Mean Girls and Clueless are high on my list but she is also soooo not that type of girl. She's 85% should have been a gen x grunge kid, 15% princess. I could see her liking those movies but also just hating all the characters deeply. I struggle to predict where she falls on anything.

I'll reiterate, Whale Rider

Magic Mike? ;)

Would Moneyball be too slow if she likes baseball. I love the Will Hunting call. Your blurb in your next post about the Gen X had me thinking about Dazed, Reality Bites, Singles type fare too. I love a lot of movies on Eephus' list, but when you talk about your relationship I get the idea that she has had to age quickly and maybe missed the boat on seeing some of those at the right age. I would try the peak ones (well IMO) like the ones you listed - Mean Girls, Clueless, etc. if those don't hit I don't imagine many of those others will.

Or something like Empire Records?
The Craft?

Thanks for the suggestions. She has seen Lost Boys and liked it. Fast Times and Dazed are now on my list too with school starting up.

My wife's niece grew up rough in HI- single, useless AWOL mom, dad in jail and also AWOL. Her plan in and after HS was to work at McDs and figure stuff out from there, which based on her peer group meant drugs/alcohol, teen pregnancy with no baby daddy and likely petty crimes leading to juvee and/or jail. She credits Whale Rider (and my wife) with changing her view on things.

Busy or bored weekend, not sure which. Watched Extraction 2 which I followed with Extraction. Neither are winning awards and the fight scenes require a pretty massive suspension of disbelief but if you're a fan of Chris Hemsworth and action, this will hit for you. One thing that I noticed is Hemsworth uses his gun as much like a bat as he does a gun. Haven't seen that in action series as much as I did in these two movies.

Finished Rogan's Burn the Boats this morning. I listen to him all the time so felt obligated to watch. There were a couple of things that made me laugh, nothing that made me have to stop the treadmill so I'd give it a solid meh.

The women folk watched the Princess Diaries I and II in preparation for a Princess Diary themed party one was throwing for one of their friends. Gotta admit, both are still solid watches if you have younger girls.

Just to be clear - does she clarify what type of guys are cute, or is this some odd test to see what movies have the guys we think are cute? i would suggest rocking all Ryan Gosling movies, but thats just me.

A Quiet Place: Day One free on Paramount + now
I just watched the 2nd movie again recently to get ready for this. Good to know.
Really not necessary. Outside of the aliens, you could argue the third movie has nothing to do with the first two.

That's not saying it's bad. It is just a completely different movie. You will see.

I liked this third one better than either of the first two, FWIW

I started watching the recent Napoleon movie, made it about 45 minutes in and turned it off. It was just dull. Also, it's a movie about mainly French folk, yet everyone has British accents - except Napoleon who sounds like he's from Los Angeles. It seems like his story, and the story of the times he lived in, would be solid ground to make some interesting movies and/or series, yet I don't think I've seen one.

It was a really poor movie. You did the right thing pulling the plug.

May as well go for Usual Suspects.

Bad news. Was looking forward to watching it

Ridley Scott is allegedly releasing a "Director's Cut" of the movie that will include a lot more exposition. Unfortunately, the cut won't fix the accent.

Has she watched Guardians of the Galaxy?
Not sure. I have and I will politely say I was not a fan. She loves Spider-Man and thinks most of superhero stuff is dumb but she did mention liking the Deadpool movies so who knows. I’ll ask though.

In the theatrical release, I felt like I was watching a boring wikipedia page on the screen. This, this, this, then this, Fin. I guess I learned a little about Nappy, so there's that... But well made film and story it wasn't

The First Slam Dunk (2022-new on Netflix) is a two hour anime about a single 40 minute Japanese high school basketball game. It begins with the tipoff and uses flashbacks to tell the stories of the players. By the final minutes, I was invested in the characters and the outcome of the game which is what I expect from a sports movie. Most of the flashbacks covered the backstory of the point guard although the Rodmanesque power forward played a more pivotal role in the in-game action.

It's anime so there's some exaggeration but the game plays out more or less realistically. The filmmakers' love of basketball is obvious in the small details they capture. I don't watch a lot of anime so I can't say how the visuals stack up against the current state of the art. But I thought the players' movements seemed natural and there are things you can do in a cartoon that aren't possible using actors.

Is it from an actually played game, or fiction?

There is a national high school basketball tournament in Japan but the game is fictional based on a long-running manga series. The game shown in the movie isn't even the finals; I believe it's a second round matchup.

I watched the dubbed version which was well done as per usual for Netflix movies. I started off with the subtitled Japanese version but figured after a while that we're talking about cartoons.

Lol, re: dubbing.

It killed Dark's first season for me- the voiceover work was that bad. Had to rewatch with subtitles... Which I normally do anyways.

It's likely because Scott had to cut a lot out for the theatrical release. Nowadays, many people don't want to sit in a theater and watch a movie, especially a historical movie, for more than 90 minutes.

The theatrical release was 2 hr 38 min. There's now a director's cut streaming on Apple TV that's 48 minutes longer.

I'm passing on the new version unless they've been able to digitally recast a different lead actor.
